Abstract

Mechanoluminescence (ML) is generated during exposures of certain materials to mechanical stimuli. Many solid materials produce ML during their fracturing, however, the irreversibility of fracto-induced ML limits the practical applications of these materials. In 1999, Chao-Nan Xu discovered an intense and reproducible ML from trap-controlled materials, including ZnS:Mn 2+ and SrAl 2 O 4 :Eu 2+ , and introduced the principles and applications of hybrid inorganic/organic mechanoluminescent (ML) composites, and related sensors to visualize stress/strain in target structures. This discovery has triggered intense research interest in trap-controlled ML materials and composites over the past 2 decades. Notable achievements of this research include the development of trap-controlled materials that exhibit bright ML emission from the ultraviolet to the near infra-red, and multiscale mechano-optical sensitivities. This research has also increased our understanding of the mechanisms of ML phenomena, enabling the rational design of trap-controlled ML materials. Practical applications of ML are also being driven by the discovery that ML composites can serve as “mechano-optical sensitive skin” for structural health diagnosis, stress sensors for biomechanics, and mechanically-activated light sources. This review focuses on the design, synthesis, characterization, optimization and application of trap-controlled ML materials, and concludes with discussions on future directions of ML research and specific challenges to improve ML materials for real-world applications.

20. Strengthening the non-pre-irradiated near-infrared mechanoluminescence of CaZnOS:Nd3+ by Mn2+ coactivation for biomechanical imaging.

Abstract

The development of lanthanide-activated CaZnOS mechanoluminescent (ML) phosphors that can produce non-pre-irradiated mechanoluminescence (ML) in the near-infrared (NIR) region opens a new avenue for in vivo and in situ biomechanical imaging. However, the progress in obtaining NIR ML images with a high signal-to-background ratio (SBR) has been constrained by the difficulties in achieving intense NIR ML. In this paper, we report a Mn2+-coactivation induced dual sensitization strategy that combines host sensitization with dopant sensitization to enhance the NIR ML of CaZnOS:Nd3+. Systematic characterization of the CaZnOS:Nd3+,Mn2+ series reveals that the enhanced NIR ML arises from the energy transfer from the host to Mn2+ to Nd3+, which involves the Mn2+-doping strengthened host excitation and the resonant energy transfer from Mn2+ to Nd3+. We demonstrate that the developed CaZnOS:Nd3+,Mn2+ phosphor greatly enhances the transient intensity of the NIR ML response and the SBR value of NIR ML images through a series of NIR ML penetration experiments on chicken breast and human cheek. In particular, the transient NIR ML response to dental occlusion is improved by 368%, while the SBR value of NIR ML penetrating the human cheek is improved from 1.25 to 2.1. Our results are expected to provide new insights into the development and optimization of non-pre-irradiated NIR ML phosphors, and further to advance the applications of NIR ML phosphors with an intense emission for high SBR biomechanical imaging. Abstract

Mechanoluminescent (ML) materials featuring renewable mechanical‐to‐optical conversion have shown promising prospects in stress sensing, lighting, and display. However, the advancement in ML applications is being restrained by the obstacles in developing efficient ML materials and understanding the underlying ML mechanisms. Herein, a matrix evolution strategy to modulate the local microstructure and electronic environment around the luminescent activators is proposed, which not only supports the batch development of new ML materials but also provides a well‐connected platform for systematically revealing the mechanism of achieving efficient ML performance. The feasibility of the strategy is proved by constructing and evaluating a series of ML materials with matrix‐dependent luminescent properties in experimental‐theoretical collaboration. It is demonstrated that the construction of piezoluminescence is available in both non‐centrosymmetric and centrosymmetric matrices without being restricted by lattice symmetry. The inter‐electronic‐levels and shallow electron traps formed by activator doping enhance the electron recombination efficiency through tunneling and conduction band transfer pathways. The results are expected to accelerate the exploitation of ML material systems and to deepen the comprehensive apprehending of ML mechanisms, thereby guiding the rational design and widespread use of efficient ML materials.
