1. Blueprint for NV center ensemble based magnetometer: precise diamond sensor material characterization

Abstract

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is a promising candidate for various quantum applications, such as quantum sensing. High sensitivity in NV-based magnetic sensing requires a diamond sample with a high density of NV centers and a long electron spin dephasing time. In this work, we propose a systematic measurement method for determining the electron spin dephasing time of NV center ensembles and analyze the contributions to the dephasing time from various sources, including NV-NV interactions, strain distribution, $^{13}C$ nuclear spin, and P1 electron spin. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method on a series of high-performance diamond samples and provide a comprehensive understanding of dephasing sources, enabling the optimization of NV-based quantum sensing applications.

5. Efficient real-time spin readout of nitrogen-vacancy centers based on Bayesian estimation

Abstract

In this work, to improve the spin readout efficiency of the nitrogen vacancy (NV) center, a real-time Bayesian estimation algorithm is proposed, which combines both the prior probability distribution and the fluorescence likelihood function established by the implementation of the NV center dynamics model. The theoretical surpass of the Cramer-Rao lower bound of the readout variance and the improvement of the readout efficiency in the simulation indicate that our approach is an appealing alternative to the conventional photon summation method. The Bayesian real-time estimation readout was experimentally realized by combining a high-performance acquisition and processing hardware, and the Rabi oscillation experiments divulged that the signal-to-noise ratio of our approach was improved by 28.6%. Therefore, it is anticipated that the employed Bayesian estimation readout will effectively present superior sensing capabilities of the NV ensemble, and foster the further development of compact and scalable quantum sensors and consequently novel quantum information processing devices on a monolithic platform.

7. Burst Eddy Current Testing with a Diamond Magnetometry

Abstract

In this work, a burst eddy current testing technique based on the employment of a diamond nitrogen vacancy (NV) center magnetometer with the Hahn echo (HE) sequence is demonstrated. With the confocal experiment apparatus, the HE-based NV magnetometer attained a magnetic sensitivity of $4.3 ~ \mathrm{nT} / \sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ and a volume-normalized sensitivity of $3.6 ~ \mathrm{pT} / \sqrt{\mathrm{Hz} \cdot \mathrm{mm}^{-3}}$, which are 5 times better than the already existing method under the same conditions. Based on the proposed magnetometer configuration, a burst eddy current (BEC) testing prototype achieves a minimum detectable sample smaller than ${300~{\mu} \mathrm{m}}$ and measurement accuracy of $9.85~\mathrm{\mu} \mathrm{m}$., which is employed to image different metallic specimens and detect the layered internal structures. Since our prototype comprises superb high sensitivity, it exhibits various potential applications in the fields of deformation monitoring, security screening, and quality control. Moreover, its biocompatibility and promising nanoscale resolution paves the way for electromagnetic testing in the fields of biomaterials.

Abstract

This article proposes a scheme for nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center magnetometry that combines the advantages of lock-in detection and pulse-type scheme. The optimal conditions, optimal sensitivity, and noise-suppression capability of the proposed method are compared with those of the conventional methods from both theoretical and simulation points of view. Through experimental measurements, a four-time improvement in sensitivity and 60-times improvement in minimum resolvable magnetic field (MRMF) was obtained. By using a confocal experiment setup, proposed scheme achieves a sensitivity of 3 nT/Hz1/2 and a MRMF of 100 pT.

Abstract

Diamond nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center magnetometry has recently received considerable interest from researchers in the fields of applied physics and sensors. The purpose of this review is to analyze the principle, sensitivity, technical development potential, and application prospect of the diamond NV center magnetometry. This review briefly introduces the physical characteristics of NV centers, summarizes basic principles of the NV center magnetometer, analyzes the theoretical sensitivity, and discusses the impact of technical noise on the NV center magnetometer. Furthermore, the most critical technologies that affect the performance of the NV center magnetometer are described: diamond sample preparation, microwave manipulation, fluorescence collection, and laser excitation. The theoretical and technical crucial problems, potential solutions and research technical route are discussed. In addition, this review discusses the influence of technical noise under the conventional technical conditions and the actual sensitivity which is determined by the theoretical sensitivity and the technical noise. It is envisaged that the sensitivity that can be achieved through an optimized design is in the order of 10 fT/Hz^1/2. Abstract

The nitrogen−vacancy (NV) center in diamond gains its versatility when negatively charged (NV−) but is mediocre when neutrally charged. Particularly, the charge states of NV centers are convertible under optical pumping and during the dark intervals, whose dynamics are mixed with the NV−s' spin polarizations and relaxations, making them difficult to detect. Here, a microwave‐pulses‐assisted charge state dynamics (CSD) measurement method of NV centers in the dark time (DT) is proposed. The microwave pulses are designed to manipulate the populations of the NV−s' ground state spin triplets (qutrit) to the equilibrium state before the DT. Thus, the longitudinal relaxations of the qutrit are balanced, and pure CSD can be detected. Interestingly, in an annealed bulk diamond, not only the traditional tunneling‐induced fast exponential CSD are observed, but also a slow and long‐term recharging process, which is probably attributed to the exchanging of the electrons between NV centers and the high‐energy‐level charge traps such as vacancy clusters. Furthermore, results demonstrate a 40% increase in NV−s' contrast by properly extending the recharging DT. 23. Genome-wide identification and analysis of expression pattern of REVEILLEtranscription factors in castor (Ricinus communisL.)

Abstract

REVEILLE (RVEs) transcription factors play an important role in regulating circadian clock, plant growth and development, and stress responses. While RVEs have been identified in various plant species, comprehensive genome exploration and analysis of RVEs in castor (Ricinus communisL.) have not been previously reported. In this study, we identified RcRVEs in the castor genome through sequence alignment and conducted an analysis encompassing gene structures, protein motifs, physicochemical properties, transcription patterns under cold stress, different tissues, and diurnal rhythm. A total of five RcRVEswere pinpointed in the castor genome. Evolutionary tree analysis categorized these RcRVEs into three distinct groups, implying that different RcRVEs may fulfill distinct biological functions. Furthermore, several abiotic stresses and hormone-responsive cis-acting elements were found in the promoters of the RcRVEs. RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis revealed that RcRVE1and RcRVE7were induced by cold stress and exhibited upregulation over time, indicating their involvement in regulating cold adaptation in castor plants. Five RcRVEshave notably higher expression levels in leaves compared to other tissues. The expression of all RcRVEsdisplayed diurnal rhythms under light/dark cycles. This study provides valuable insights into the potential functions of RcRVEs in regulating castor’s growth and development, and responses to cold stress.

Abstract

Recent technological advances in the noisy intermediate‐scale quantum (NISQ) era are promising. Optically addressable color centers in semiconductors can achieve spin localization and are the most promising spin qubit candidates for NISQ technologies. Exploring a suitable and scalable atomic‐like color center is a prerequisite in this context. Here, a symmetry‐protected two‐level system (qubit) derived from a set of naturally separated Bell states in the H3 center with C2v symmetry is characterized. The characterized qubit significantly reduces magnetic noise compared with a degenerate triplet in C3v systems for conventional qubits. The Hamiltonian, including the Coulomb interaction, spin–orbit coupling, and spin–spin interaction, is comprehensively developed using a combination of first‐principle calculations and group theory analyses. Consequently, an intrinsic spin–phonon interface embedded in an optical spin‐polarization loop can enable an effective interrogation of the information of the two‐level system. This study not only paves the way for developing further quantum information science applications utilizing the H3 center but also provides a competitive qubit candidate for the NISQ era. Abstract

The adjusted Carrâ€"Purcellâ€"Meiboomâ€"Gill (CPMG) sequence is mathematically simulated to obtain the 13C nuclear spin signals coupled to a negatively-charged nitrogen-vacancy (NVâˆ') center in diamond. The pulse interval ratio and scanning frequency of the sequence were precisely adjusted to achieve the high-resolution 13C nuclear spin detection. The frequency resolution of the sequence was 5.8 times improved than that of the original CPMG sequence, and the full width at half maximum of the coherence dips were less than 1.7 kHz. The adjusted method can be extended to other dynamical decoupling sequence, and offers a promising approach to improve identification of the nuclear spins in coupled electron-nuclear spin systems.
