Byline: Le-Le Zou, Jiu-Tian Zhang In this paper, a survey was conducted on the impacts of characters and social-economic environments of Beijing university students on their awareness and concerns in crisis management. On the basis of quantitative analysis of statistical data, the relationship between five aspects of people's character (including living attitude, attitude to changes, basic inclination, self-orientation and ambitiousness) and the awareness and concerns towards crisis events was revealed. The conclusions will be helpful for further study and development in the area of crisis management.

In this paper, we analysed the trends of Chinese and international crude oil prices and their fluctuations by testing the Granger causality and the dynamic effects to its counterpart. Results show that from 1997, the trends of Chinese and international crude oil prices are almost identical. The fluctuation of the Chinese price is less than that of international crude oil price. Over the longer term, there is bilateral Granger causality between Chinese and international crude oil prices. However, the impact of international price on the Chinese price is rapid and dramatic: whilst the impact of the latter on the former is relatively slow and small.

Byline: Jiu-Tian Zhang, Yu Wang In this paper, empirical analysis is performed between information activities and energy use in the Chinese economy, based on an Input-Output (I-O) approach. The results show that: (1) information activities were very active and important in the Chinese economy from 1987 to 1997; (2) the importance of energy use and information activities changed greatly in this period and information activities truly substituted for energy and contributed to energy saving and (3) the process of disseminating information appears incomplete and it will have a potential impact on the Chinese economy to reduce energy intensity.

Byline: Jiu-Tian Zhang, Ying Fan, Yi-Ming Wei This paper focuses on the government R&D expenditures and analyses the dynamic reaction patterns of energy R&D in several countries to oil shocks and shows that the oil shocks served as a strong incentive to promote energy R&D. But on the other hand, it suggests the myopic behaviour of government in energy R&D. We further analyse the trends of energy R&D portfolio in both technology dimension and country. The result shows a trend of technological variety, but fewer countries have invested in energy R&D, and those countries tend to invest in their favoured technologies.
