Information engines produce mechanical work through measurement and adaptive control. For information engines, the principal challenge lies in how to store the generated work for subsequent utilization. Here, we report an experimental demonstration where quantized mechanical motion serves as a quantum battery and gets charged in repeated cycles by a single trapped-ion information engine. This is enabled by a key technological advancement in rapid state discrimination, allowing us to suppress measurement-induced disturbances. Consequently, we were able to obtain a charging efficiency over 50\% of the theoretical limit at the optimal temperature. The experimental results substantiate that this approach can render trapped ions a promising platform for microscopic information engines with potential applications in the future upon scaling up.

To effectively implement quantum algorithms on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) processors is a central task in modern quantum technology. NISQ processors feature tens to a few hundreds of noisy qubits with limited coherence times and gate operations with errors, so NISQ algorithms naturally require employing circuits of short lengths via quantum compilation. Here, we develop a reinforcement learning (RL)-based quantum compiler for a superconducting processor and demonstrate its capability of discovering novel and hardware-amenable circuits with short lengths. We show that for the three-qubit quantum Fourier transformation, a compiled circuit using only seven CZ gates with unity circuit fidelity can be achieved. The compiler is also able to find optimal circuits under device topological constraints, with lengths considerably shorter than those by the conventional method. Our study exemplifies the codesign of the software with hardware for efficient quantum compilation, offering valuable insights for the advancement of RL-based compilers.

We explore the topology-disorder phase diagram by simulating one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model with quasiperiodic disorder using a programmable superconducting simulator. We experimentally map out and identify various trivial and topological phases with extended and localized bulk states. We find that in the topological phase the bulk states can be critically localized without mobility edge or contain both critically and completely localized states. In addition, there exist trivial and topological intermediate phases with mobility edge and coexistence of extended and completely localized states. The presence of the surprisingly rich phases in the simple SSH model with quasiperiodic disorder sheds new light on the investigation of the topological and localization phenomena in condensed-matter physics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Controllable bosonic systems can provide post-classical computational power with sub-universal quantum computational capability. A network that consists of a number of bosons evolving through beam-splitters and phase-shifters between different modes, has been proposed and applied to demonstrate quantum advantages. While the network has been implemented mostly in optical systems with photons, recently alternative realizations have been explored, where major limitations in photonic systems such as photon loss, and probabilistic manipulation can be addressed. Phonons, the quantized excitations of vibrational modes, of trapped ions can be a promising candidate to realize the bosonic network. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a minimal-loss phononic network that can be programmed and in which any phononic states are deterministically prepared and detected. We realize the network with up to four collective-vibrational modes, which can be straightforwardly extended to reveal quantum advantage. We benchmark the performance of the network with an exemplary algorithm of tomography for arbitrary multi-mode states with a fixed total phonon number. We obtain reconstruction fidelities of 94.5 $\pm$ 1.95 % and 93.4 $\pm$ 3.15 % for single-phonon and two-phonon states, respectively. Our experiment demonstrates a clear and novel pathway to scale up a phononic network for various quantum information processing beyond the limitations of classical and other quantum systems.

Two-dimensional (2D) quantum magnetism is a paradigm in strongly correlated many-body physics. The understanding of 2D quantum magnetism can be expedited by employing a controllable quantum simulator that faithfully maps 2D-spin Hamiltonians. The 2D quantum simulators can exhibit exotic phenomena such as frustrated quantum magnetism and topological order and can be used to show quantum computational advantages. Many experimental platforms are being developed, including Rydberg atoms and superconducting annealers. However, with trapped-ion systems, which showed the most advanced controllability and quantum coherence, quantum magnetism was explored in one-dimensional chains. Here, we report simulations of frustrated quantum magnetism with 2D ion crystals. We create a variety of spin-spin interactions for quantum magnets, including those that exhibit frustration by driving different vibrational modes and adiabatically prepare the corresponding ground states. The experimentally measured ground states are consistent with the theoretical predictions and are highly degenerate for geometrically frustrated spin models in two dimensions. Quantum coherence of the ground states is probed by reversing the time evolution of the B-field to the initial value and then measuring the extent to which the remaining state coincides with the initial state. Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) have shown strong evidences to gain provable computational advantages for diverse fields such as finance, machine learning, and chemistry. However, the heuristic ansatz exploited in modern VQAs is incapable of balancing the tradeoff between expressivity and trainability, which may lead to the degraded performance when executed on the noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) machines. To address this issue, here we demonstrate the first proof-of-principle experiment of applying an efficient automatic ansatz design technique, i.e., quantum architecture search (QAS), to enhance VQAs on an 8-qubit superconducting quantum processor. In particular, we apply QAS to tailor the hardware-efficient ansatz towards classification tasks. Compared with the heuristic ansatze, the ansatz designed by QAS improves test accuracy from 31% to 98%. We further explain this superior performance by visualizing the loss landscape and analyzing effective parameters of all ansatze. Our work provides concrete guidance for developing variable ansatze to tackle various large-scale quantum learning problems with advantages.

Deep-circuit quantum computation, like Shor's algorithm, is undermined by error accumulation, and near-future quantum techniques are far from adequate for full-fledged quantum error correction. Instead of resorting to shallow-circuit quantum algorithms, recent theoretical research suggests that digital quantum simulation (DQS) of closed quantum systems are robust against the accumulation of Trotter errors, as long as local observables are concerned. In this paper, we investigate digital quantum simulation of open quantum systems. First, we prove that the deviation in the steady state obtained from digital quantum simulation depends only on the error in a single Trotter step, which indicates that error accumulation may not be disastrous. By numerical simulation of the quantum circuits for the DQS of the dissipative XYZ model, we then show that the correct results can be recovered by quantum error mitigation as long as the error rate in the DQS is below a sharp threshold. We explain this threshold behavior by the existence of a dissipation-driven quantum phase transition. Finally, we propose a new error-mitigation technique based on the scaling behavior in the vicinity of the critical point of a quantum phase transition. Our results expand the territory of near-future available quantum algorithms and stimulate further theoretical and experimental efforts in practical quantum applications.

Floquet engineering, i.e. driving the system with periodic Hamiltonians, not only provides great flexibility in analog quantum simulation, but also supports phase structures of great richness. It has been proposed that Floquet systems can support a discrete time-translation symmetry (TTS) broken phase, dubbed the discrete time crystal (DTC). This proposal, as well as the exotic phase, has attracted tremendous interest among the community of quantum simulation. Here we report the observation of the DTC in an one-dimensional superconducting qubit chain. We experimentally realize long-time stroboscopic quantum dynamics of a periodically driven spin system consisting of 8 transmon qubits, and obtain a lifetime of the DTC order limited by the coherence time of the underlying physical platform. We also explore the crossover between the discrete TTS broken and unbroken phases via various physical signatures. Our work extends the usage of superconducting circuit systems in quantum simulation of many-body physics, and provides an experimental tool for investigating non-equilibrium dynamics and phase structures.

Significant progress has been made in building large-scale superconducting quantum processors based on flip-chip technology. In this work, we use the flip-chip technology to realize a modified transmon qubit, donated as the "flipmon", whose large shunt capacitor is replaced by a vacuum-gap parallel plate capacitor. To further reduce the qubit footprint, we place one of the qubit pads and a single Josephson junction on the bottom chip and the other pad on the top chip which is galvanically connected with the single Josephson junction through an indium bump. The electric field participation ratio can arrive at nearly 53% in air when the vacuum-gap is about 5 microns, and thus potentially leading to a lower dielectric loss. The coherence times of the flipmons are measured in the range of 30-60 microseconds, which are comparable with that of traditional transmons with similar fabrication processes. The electric field simulation indicates that the metal-air interface's participation ratio increases significantly and may dominate the qubit's decoherence. This suggests that more careful surface treatment needs to be considered. No evidence shows that the indium bumps inside the flipmons cause significant decoherence. By using the dry etching process of tantalum (Ta) film, we had obtained transmon qubit with the best lifetime (T1) 503 us, suggesting that the dry etching process can be adopted in the following multi-qubit fabrication with Ta film. We also compared the relaxation and coherence times of transmons made with different materials (Ta, Nb and Al) with the same design and fabrication processes of Josephson junction, we found that samples prepared with Ta film had the best performance, followed by those with Al film and Nb film. We inferred that the reason for this difference was due to the different loss of oxide materials located at the metal-air interface.

The identification of spacial noise correlation is of critical importance in developing error-corrected quantum devices, but it has barely been studied so far. In this work, we utilize an effective new method called qubit motion, to efficiently determine the noise correlations between any pair of qubits in a 7-qubit superconducting quantum system. The noise correlations between the same pairs of qubits are also investigated when the qubits are at distinct operating frequencies. What's more, in this multi-qubit system with the presence of noise correlations, we demonstrate the enhancing effect of qubit motion on the coherence of logic qubit, and we propose a Motion-CPMG operation sequence to more efficiently protect the logic state from decoherence, which is experimentally demonstrated to extend the decoherence time of logic qubit by nearly one order of magnitude.

High fidelity two-qubit gates are fundamental for scaling up the superconducting number. We use two qubits coupled via a frequency-tunable coupler which can adjust the coupling strength, and demonstrate the CZ gate using two different schemes, adiabatic and diabatic methods. The Clifford based Randomized Benchmarking (RB) method is used to assess and optimize the CZ gate fidelity. The fidelity of adiabatic and diabatic CZ gates are 99.53(8)% and 98.72(2)%, respectively. We also analyze the errors induced by the decoherence. Comparing to 30 ns duration time of adiabatic CZ gate, the duration time of diabatic CZ gate is 19 ns, revealing lower incoherence error rate $r'_{\rm{incoherent, int}}$ = 0.0197(5) than $r_{\rm{incoherent, int}}$ = 0.0223(3).

The ability to manipulate quantum systems lies at the heart of the development of quantum technology. The ultimate goal of quantum control is to realize arbitrary quantum operations (AQuOs) for all possible open quantum system dynamics. However, the demanding extra physical resources impose great obstacles. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a universal approach of AQuO on a photonic qudit with minimum physical resource of a two-level ancilla and a $\log_{2}d$-scale circuit depth for a $d$-dimensional system. The AQuO is then applied in quantum trajectory simulation for quantum subspace stabilization and quantum Zeno dynamics, as well as incoherent manipulation and generalized measurements of the qudit. Realizing a long coherence time quantum memory is a major challenge of current quantum technology. Here, we report a single \Yb ion-qubit memory with over one hour coherence time, an order of improvement compared to the state-of-the-art record. The long coherence time memory is realized by addressing various technical challenges such as ambient magnetic-field noise, phase noise and leakage of the microwave oscillator. Moreover, systematically study the decoherence process of our quantum memory by quantum process tomography, which enables to apply the strict criteria of quantum coherence, relative entropy of coherence. We also benchmark our quantum memory by its ability in preserving quantum information, i.e., the robustness of quantum memory, which clearly shows that over 6000 s, our quantum memory preserves non-classical quantum information. By high-throughput calculations based on the density functional theory, we construct a structure map for AB$_2$ type monolayers of 3844 compounds which are all the combinations of 62 elements selected from the periodic table. The structure map and its web version (www.openmx-square.org/2d-ab2/) provide comprehensive structural trends of the 3844 compounds in two dimensional (2D) structures, and predict correctly structures of most of existing 2D compounds such as transition metal dichalcogenides and MXenes having 1T or 1H type structures. We also summarize all the families of 1T/1H type AB$_2$ monolayers for each combination of groups in the periodic table on the basis of our structure map, and propose new types of structures such as a memory structure, which may be a candidate material for data storage applications with an extremely high areal density. In addition, planar and distorted planar structures and other geometrically characteristic structures are found through the high-throughput calculations. These characteristic structures might give new viewpoints and directions to search unknown 2D materials. Quantum field theories describe a wide variety of fundamental phenomena in physics. However, their study often involves cumbersome numerical simulations. Quantum simulators, on the other hand, may outperform classical computational capacities due to their potential scalability. Here, we report an experimental realization of a quantum simulation of fermion-antifermion scattering mediated by bosonic modes, using a multilevel trapped ion, which is a simplified model of fermion scattering in both perturbative and nonperturbative quantum electrodynamics. The simulated model exhibits prototypical features in quantum field theory including particle pair creation and annihilation, as well as self-energy interactions. These are experimentally observed by manipulating four internal levels of a $^{171}\mathrm{Yb}^{+}$ trapped ion, where we encode the fermionic modes, and two motional degrees of freedom that simulate the bosonic modes. Our experiment establishes an avenue towards the efficient implementation of fermionic and bosonic quantum field modes, which may prove useful in scalable studies of quantum field theories in perturbative and nonperturbative regimes., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

We report the first experimental realization of the geometric Landau-Zener-St\"{u}ckelberg (LZS) interferometry proposed by [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 207002 (2011)] in a single trapped ion system. Different from a conventional LZS interferometer, the interference fringes of our geometric interferometer originate solely from geometric phase. We also observe the robustness of the interference contrast against noise or fluctuation in the experimental parameters.
