Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites play a crucial role in the development of 6G mobile networks and space-air-ground integrated systems. Recent advancements in space technology have empowered LEO satellites with the capability to run AI applications. However, centralized approaches, where ground stations (GSs) act as servers and satellites as clients, often encounter slow convergence and inefficiencies due to intermittent connectivity between satellites and GSs. In contrast, decentralized federated learning (DFL) offers a promising alternative by facilitating direct communication between satellites (clients) via inter-satellite links (ISLs). However, inter-plane ISLs connecting satellites from different orbital planes are dynamic due to Doppler shifts and pointing limitations. This could impact model propagation and lead to slower convergence. To mitigate these issues, we propose DFedSat, a fully decentralized federated learning framework tailored for LEO satellites. DFedSat accelerates the training process by employing two adaptive mechanisms for intra-plane and inter-plane model aggregation, respectively. Furthermore, a self-compensation mechanism is integrated to enhance the robustness of inter-plane ISLs against transmission failure. Additionally, we derive the sublinear convergence rate for the non-convex case of DFedSat. Buildings produce one-third of carbon emissions globally, however, data absence regarding global floorspace poses challenges in advancing building carbon neutrality. We compile the measured building stocks for 14 major economies and apply our global building stock model, GLOBUS, to evaluate future trends in stock turnover. Based on a scenario not considering renovation, by 2070 the building stock in developed economies will be ~1.4 times that of 2020 (100 billion m2); in developing economies it is expected to be 2.2 times that of 2020 (313 billion m2). Based on a techno-economic potential scenario, however, stocks in developed economies will decline to approximately 0.8 times the 2020 level, while stocks in developing economies will increase to nearly twice the 2020 level due to their fewer buildings currently. Extra large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is a key technology for future wireless communication systems. This paper considers the effects of visibility region (VR) at the base station (BS) in a non-stationary multi-user XL-MIMO scenario, where only partial antennas can receive users' signal. In time division duplexing (TDD) mode, we first estimate the VR at the BS by detecting the energy of the received signal during uplink training phase. The probabilities of two detection errors are derived and the uplink channel on the detected VR is estimated. In downlink data transmission, to avoid cumbersome Monte-Carlo trials, we derive a deterministic approximate expression for ergodic {average energy efficiency (EE)} with the regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding. In frequency division duplexing (FDD) mode, the VR is estimated in uplink training and then the channel information of detected VR is acquired from the feedback channel. In downlink data transmission, the approximation of ergodic average {EE} is also derived with the RZF precoding. Invoking approximate results, we propose an alternate optimization algorithm to design the detection threshold and the pilot length in both TDD and FDD modes. Wireless federated learning (WFL) suffers from heterogeneity prevailing in the data distributions, computing powers, and channel conditions of participating devices. This paper presents a new Federated Learning with Adjusted leaRning ratE (FLARE) framework to mitigate the impact of the heterogeneity. The key idea is to allow the participating devices to adjust their individual learning rates and local training iterations, adapting to their instantaneous computing powers. The convergence upper bound of FLARE is established rigorously under a general setting with non-convex models in the presence of non-i.i.d. datasets and imbalanced computing powers. By minimizing the upper bound, we further optimize the scheduling of FLARE to exploit the channel heterogeneity. A nested problem structure is revealed to facilitate iteratively allocating the bandwidth with binary search and selecting devices with a new greedy method. A linear problem structure is also identified and a low-complexity linear programming scheduling policy is designed when training models have large Lipschitz constants. Experiments demonstrate that FLARE consistently outperforms the baselines in test accuracy, and converges much faster with the proposed scheduling policy.

Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) integrate physical principles into machine learning, finding wide applications in various science and engineering fields. However, solving nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) with PINNs presents challenges due to inherent discontinuities in the solutions. This is particularly true for the Buckley-Leverett (B-L) equation, a key model for multi-phase fluid flow in porous media. In this paper, we demonstrate that PINNs, in conjunction with Welge's Construction, can achieve superior precision in handling the B-L equations in different scenarios including one shock and one rarefaction wave, two shocks connected by a rarefaction wave traveling in the same direction, and two shocks connected by a rarefaction wave traveling in opposite directions. Our approach accounts for variations in fluid mobility, fluid solubility, and gravity effects, with applications in modeling 1D water flooding, polymer flooding, gravitational flow, and CO$_2$ injection into saline aquifers. Additionally, we applied PINNs to inverse problems to estimate multiple PDE parameters from observed data, demonstrating robustness under conditions of slight scarcity and up to 5% impurity of labeled data, as well as shortages in collocation data.

The construction of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations has recently spurred tremendous attention from academia and industry. 5G and 6G standards have specified LEO satellite network as a key component of 5G and 6G networks. However, ground terminals experience frequent, high-latency handover incurred by satellites' fast travelling speed, which deteriorates the performance of latency-sensitive applications. To address this challenge, we propose a novel handover flowchart for mobile satellite networks, which can considerably reduce the handover latency. The innovation behind this scheme is to mitigate the interaction between the access and core networks that occupy the majority of time overhead by leveraging the predictable travelling trajectory and spatial distribution inherent in mobile satellite networks. Specifically, we design a fine-grained synchronized algorithm to address the synchronization problem due to the lack of control signalling delivery between the access and core networks. Moreover, we minimize the computational complexity of the core network using information such as the satellite access strategy and unique spatial distribution, which is caused by frequent prediction operations. We have built a prototype for a mobile satellite network using modified Open5GS and UERANSIM, which is driven by actual LEO satellite constellations such as Starlink and Kuiper. We have conducted extensive experiments, and the results demonstrate that our proposed handover scheme can considerably reduce the handover latency compared to the 3GPP Non-terrestrial Networks (NTN) and two other existing handover schemes.

Estimating the average treatment effect in social networks is challenging due to individuals influencing each other. One approach to address interference is ego cluster experiments, where each cluster consists of a central individual (ego) and its peers (alters). Clusters are randomized, and only the effects on egos are measured. In this work, we propose an improved framework for ego cluster experiments called ego group partition (EGP), which directly generates two groups and an ego sub-population instead of ego clusters. Under specific model assumptions, we propose two ego group partition algorithms. Compared to the original ego clustering algorithm, our algorithms produce more egos, yield smaller biases, and support parallel computation. The performance of our algorithms is validated through simulation and real-world case studies.

In social media platforms, user behavior is often influenced by interactions with other users, complicating the accurate estimation of causal effects in traditional A/B experiments. This study investigates situations where an individual's outcome can be broken down into the sum of multiple pairwise outcomes, a reflection of user interactions. These outcomes, referred to as dyadic data, are prevalent in many social network contexts. Utilizing a Bernoulli randomized design, we introduce a novel unbiased estimator for the total treatment effect (TTE), which quantifies the difference in population mean when all individuals are assigned to treatment versus control groups. We further explore the bias of our estimator in scenarios where it is impractical to include all individuals in the experiment, a common constraint in online control experiments. Our numerical results reveal that our proposed estimator consistently outperforms some commonly used estimators, underscoring its potential for more precise causal effect estimation in social media environments.

Male infertility accounts for about one-third of global infertility cases. Manual assessment of sperm abnormalities through head morphology analysis encounters issues of observer variability and diagnostic discrepancies among experts. Its alternative, Computer-Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA), suffers from low-quality sperm images, small datasets, and noisy class labels. We propose a new approach for sperm head morphology classification, called SHMC-Net, which uses segmentation masks of sperm heads to guide the morphology classification of sperm images. SHMC-Net generates reliable segmentation masks using image priors, refines object boundaries with an efficient graph-based method, and trains an image network with sperm head crops and a mask network with the corresponding masks. In the intermediate stages of the networks, image and mask features are fused with a fusion scheme to better learn morphological features. To handle noisy class labels and regularize training on small datasets, SHMC-Net applies Soft Mixup to combine mixup augmentation and a loss function. Anisotropy, as an exotic degree of freedom, enables us to discover the emergent two-dimensional (2D) layered nanomaterials with low in-plane symmetry and to explore their outstanding properties and promising applications. 2D black arsenic (b-As) with puckered structure has garnered increasing attention these years owing to its extreme anisotropy with respect to the electrical, thermal, and optical properties. However, the investigation on mechanical properties of 2D b-As is still lacking, despite much effort on theoretical simulations. Herein, we report the highly anisotropic elastic properties of suspended b-As nanoribbons via atomic force microscope-based nanoindentation. It was found that the extracted Young's modulus of b-As nanoribbons exhibits remarkable anisotropy, which approximates to 72.2 +- 5.4 and 44.3 +- 1.4 GPa along zigzag and armchair directions, respectively. The anisotropic ratio reaches up to ~ 1.6. Anisotropic two-dimensional layered materials with low-symmetric lattices have attracted increasing attention due to their unique orientation-dependent mechanical properties. Black arsenic (b-As), with the puckered structure, exhibits extreme in-plane anisotropy in optical, electrical and thermal properties. However, experimental research on mechanical properties of b-As is very rare, although theoretical calculations predicted the exotic elastic properties of b-As, such as anisotropic Young's modulus and negative Poisson's ratio. Herein, experimental observations on highly anisotropic elastic properties of b-As were demonstrated using our developed in situ tensile straining setup based on the effective microelectromechanical system. The cyclic and repeatable load-displacement curves proved that Young's modulus along zigzag direction was ~1.6 times greater than that along armchair direction, while the anisotropic ratio of ultimate strain reached ~2.5, attributed to hinge structure in armchair direction. Negative Poisson's ratio as the anomalous characteristic generally exists in artificial architectures, such as re-entrant and honeycomb structures. The structures with negative Poisson's ratio have attracted intensive attention due to their unique auxetic effect and many promising applications in shear resistant and energy absorption fields. However, experimental observation of negative Poisson's ratio in natural materials barely happened, although various two-dimensional layered materials are predicted in theory. Herein, we report the anisotropic Raman response and the intrinsic intralayer negative Poisson's ratio of two-dimensional natural black arsenic (b-As) via strain engineering strategy. The results were evident by the detailed Raman spectrum of b-As under uniaxial strain together with density functional theory calculations. It is found that b-As was softer along the armchair than zigzag direction. The anisotropic mechanical features and van der Waals interactions play essential roles in strain-dependent Raman shifts and negative Poisson's ratio in the natural b-As along zigzag direction. Local stochastic gradient descent (SGD) is a fundamental approach in achieving communication efficiency in Federated Learning (FL) by allowing individual workers to perform local updates. However, the presence of heterogeneous data distributions across working nodes causes each worker to update its local model towards a local optimum, leading to the phenomenon known as ``client-drift" and resulting in slowed convergence. To address this issue, previous works have explored methods that either introduce communication overhead or suffer from unsteady performance. In this work, we introduce a novel metric called ``degree of divergence," quantifying the angle between the local gradient and the global reference direction. Leveraging this metric, we propose the divergence-based adaptive aggregation (DRAG) algorithm, which dynamically ``drags" the received local updates toward the reference direction in each round without requiring extra communication overhead. Furthermore, we establish a rigorous convergence analysis for DRAG, proving its ability to achieve a sublinear convergence rate. Compelling experimental results are presented to illustrate DRAG's superior performance compared to state-of-the-art algorithms in effectively managing the client-drift phenomenon. Additionally, DRAG exhibits remarkable resilience against certain Byzantine attacks. By securely sharing a small sample of the client's data with the FL server, DRAG effectively counters these attacks, as demonstrated through comprehensive experiments.

Estimating the effects of long-term treatments in A/B testing presents a significant challenge. Such treatments -- including updates to product functions, user interface designs, and recommendation algorithms -- are intended to remain in the system for a long period after their launches. On the other hand, given the constraints of conducting long-term experiments, practitioners often rely on short-term experimental results to make product launch decisions. It remains an open question how to accurately estimate the effects of long-term treatments using short-term experimental data. To address this question, we introduce a longitudinal surrogate framework. We show that, under standard assumptions, the effects of long-term treatments can be decomposed into a series of functions, which depend on the user attributes, the short-term intermediate metrics, and the treatment assignments. We describe the identification assumptions, the estimation strategies, and the inference technique under this framework. Empirically, we show that our approach outperforms existing solutions by leveraging two real-world experiments, each involving millions of users on WeChat, one of the world's largest social networking platforms.

The widespread adoption of edge computing has emerged as a prominent trend for alleviating task processing delays and reducing energy consumption. However, the dynamic nature of network conditions and the varying computation capacities of edge servers (ESs) can introduce disparities between computation loads and available computing resources in edge computing networks, potentially leading to inadequate service quality. To address this challenge, this paper investigates a practical scenario characterized by dynamic task offloading. Initially, we examine traditional Multi-armed Bandit (MAB) algorithms, namely the $\varepsilon$-greedy algorithm and the UCB1-based algorithm. However, both algorithms exhibit certain weaknesses in effectively addressing the tidal data traffic patterns. Consequently, based on MAB, we propose an adaptive task offloading algorithm (ATOA) that overcomes these limitations. By conducting extensive simulations, we demonstrate the superiority of our ATOA solution in reducing task processing latency compared to conventional MAB methods. The generalized Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma as established by Iwasaki and Hara in 2005 marks a milestone in the analysis and synthesis of linear systems from a finite-frequency perspective. Given a pre-specified frequency band, it allows us to produce passive controllers with excellent in-band disturbance attenuation performance at the expense of some of the out-of-band performance. This paper focuses on control design of linear systems in the presence of disturbances with non-strictly or non-stationary limited frequency spectrum. We first propose a class of frequency-dependent excited energy functions (FD-EEF) as well as frequency-dependent excited power functions (FD-EPF), which possess a desirable frequency-selectiveness property with regard to the in-band and out-of-band excited energy as well as excited power of the system. Based upon a group of frequency-selective passive controllers, we then develop a frequency-dependent switching control (FDSC) scheme that selects the most appropriate controller at runtime. We show that our FDSC scheme is capable to approximate the solid in-band performance while maintaining acceptable out-of-band performance with regard to global time horizons as well as localized time horizons. The method is illustrated by a commonly used benchmark model.
