Exciton dynamics of perovskite nanoclusters has been investigated for the first time using femtosecond transient absorption (TA) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) spectroscopy. The TA results show two photoinduced absorption signals at 420 and 461 nm and a photoinduced bleach (PB) signal at 448 nm. The analysis of the PB recovery kinetic decay and kinetic model uncovered multiple processes contributing to electron-hole recombination. The fast component (∼8 ps) is attributed to vibrational relaxation within the initial excited state, and the medium component (∼60 ps) is attributed to shallow carrier trapping. The slow component is attributed to deep carrier trapping from the initial conduction band edge (∼666 ps) and the shallow trap state (∼40 ps). The TRPL reveals longer time dynamics, with modeled lifetimes of 6.6 and 93 ns attributed to recombination through the deep trap state and direct band edge recombination, respectively. The significant role of exciton trapping processes in the dynamics indicates that these highly confined nanoclusters have defect-rich surfaces.

Exciton-phonon interactions elucidate structure-function relationships that aid in the control of color purity and carrier diffusion, which is necessary for the performance-driven design of solid-state optical emitters. Temperature-dependent steady-state photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL (TRPL) reveal that thermally activated exciton-phonon interactions originate from structural distortions related to vibrations in cubic CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) at room temperature. Exciton-phonon interactions cause performance-degrading PL line width broadening and slower electron-hole recombination. Structural distortions in cubic PQDs at room temperature exist as the bending and stretching of the PbBr6 octahedra subunit. The PbBr6 octahedral distortions cause symmetry breaking, resulting in thermally activated longitudinal optical (LO) phonon coupling to the photoexcited electron-hole pair that manifests as inhomogeneous PL line width broadening. At cryogenic temperatures, the line width broadening is minimized due to a decrease in phonon-assisted recombination through shallow traps. A fundamental understanding of these intrinsic exciton-phonon interactions gives insight into the polymorphic nature of the cubic phase and the origins of performance degradation in PQD optical emitters.

The excited state dynamics of ligand-passivated PbBr2 molecular clusters (MCs) in solution have been investigated for the first time using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The results uncover a transient bleach (TB) feature peaked around 404 nm, matching the ground state electronic absorption band peaked at 404 nm. The TB recovery signal can be fitted with a triple exponential with fast (10 ps), medium (350 ps), and long (1.8 ns) time constants. The medium and long time constants are very similar to those observed in the time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) decay monitored at 412 nm. The TB fast component is attributed to vibrational relaxation in the excited electronic state while the medium component with dominant amplitude is attributed to recombination between the relaxed electron and hole. The small amplitude slow component is assigned to electrons in a relatively long-lived excited electronic state, e.g., triplet state, or shallow trap state due to defects. This study provides new insights into the excited state dynamics of metal halide MCs.

Metal halide perovskites, such as methylammonium lead bromide, have recently attracted considerable attention due to their interesting and useful photoelectric properties. Here, two types of methylammonium lead bromide magic-sized clusters (MSCs), passivated with oleylamine and oleic acid, were synthesized using ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP) and heated LARP (HLARP) methods. The optical properties of these MSCs were characterized using UV-vis electronic absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopies. The HLARP synthesis resulted in a two-fold increase in the PL quantum yield of the MSCs to 76%. The stability of the MSCs was tested using time-dependent PL spectroscopy. LARP MSCs in solution degraded completely after 14 days under ambient conditions, while HLARP MSCs lasted for 26 days. To stabilize them, the MSCs were added to a non-coordinating matrix, paraffin. Both MSCs showed significantly improved resistance to water with the addition of paraffin. Solid LARP MSCs lost all luminescence with and without the addition of paraffin by about 3 h. Solid HLARP MSCs without paraffin started to aggregate after 3 h, but paraffin stabilized HLARP MSC films were stable for 8 days. This improved stability in solid state form allowed for accurate, nonaggregated analysis using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Raman spectroscopy revealed that the HLARP MSCs show an additional peak at 147 cm-1 compared to LARP MSCs, which is attributed to methylammonium. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy confirm that MSCs have a quasi-crystalline orthorhombic structure.

We have synthesized L-cysteine and oleylamine stabilized CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) and coupled them with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The PQDs and AuNPs, as well as their hybrid nanostructures (HNS), were characterized using UV–visible (UV–vis) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The UV–vis spectra show absorption bands of the HNS at 503 and 520 nm, attributed mainly to PQDs and AuNPs, respectively. The PQDs show a strong excitonic PL band peaked at 513 nm from PQDs. The HR-TEM results show the formation of hybrid structures between PQDs and AuNPs, which is also supported by the PL quenching of the PQDs by the coupled AuNPs. Ultrafast dynamics of the exciton and charge carriers in the HNS and pristine PQD were studied using femtosecond transient absorption. Multiexponential fitting of the dynamic data revealed the existence of shallow and deep trap states in pristine PQDs and ultrafast electron transfer from PQDs to AuNPs in the HNS. A kinetic model was proposed to account for the key dynamic processes involved and to extract the time for electron transfer from PQDs to AuNPs in the HNS, found to be ∼2 ps. Metal halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) and perovskite magic sized clusters (PMSCs) exhibit interesting size- and composition-dependent optoelectronic properties that are promising for emerging applications including photovoltaic solar cells and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Much work has focused on developing new synthesis strategies to improve their structural stability and property tunability. In this paper, we review recent progress in the synthesis and characterization of PQDs and PMSCs, with a focus on the impact of different molecular ligands on their surface passivation and interconversion. Moreover, the effect of capping ligands on ion exchange during synthesis and doping is discussed. Finally, we present some perspectives on challenges and opportunities in fundamental studies and potential applications of both PQDs and PMSCs.

Metal-halide perovskites have rapidly emerged as one of the most promising materials of the 21st century, with many exciting properties and great potential for a broad range of applications, from photovoltaics to optoelectronics and photocatalysis. The ease with which metal-halide perovskites can be synthesized in the form of brightly luminescent colloidal nanocrystals, as well as their tunable and intriguing optical and electronic properties, has attracted researchers from different disciplines of science and technology. In the last few years, there has been a significant progress in the shape-controlled synthesis of perovskite nanocrystals and understanding of their properties and applications. In this comprehensive review, researchers having expertise in different fields (chemistry, physics, and device engineering) of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystals have joined together to provide a state of the art overview and future prospects of metal-halide perovskite nanocrystal research.

Recent progress has been made on the synthesis and characterization of metal halide perovskite magic-sized clusters (PMSCs) with ABX 3 composition (A = CH3NH3 + or Cs+, B = Pb2+, and X = Cl-, Br-, or I-). However, their mechanism of growth and structure is still not well understood. In our effort to understand their structure and growth, we discovered that a new species can be formed without the CH3NH3 + component, which we name as molecular clusters (MCs). Specifically, CH3NH3PbBr3 PMSCs, with a characteristic absorption peak at 424 nm, are synthesized using PbBr2 and CH3NH3Br as precursors and butylamine (BTYA) and valeric acid (VA) as ligands, while MCs, with an absorption peak at 402 nm, are synthesized using solely PbBr2 and BTYA, without CH3NH3Br. Interestingly, PMSCs are converted spontaneously overtime into MCs. An isosbestic point in their electronic absorption spectra indicates a direct interplay between the PMSCs and MCs. Therefore, we suggest that the MCs are precursors to the PMSCs. From spectroscopic and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) results, we propose some tentative structural models for the MCs. The discovery of the MCs is critical to understanding the growth of PMSCs as well as larger perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) or nanocrystals (PNCs).

Design of metal-semiconductor interfaces and heterostructures is of strong interest for various catalytic applications including photocatalysis. In this work, a series of hollow Au nanosphere (HGN)-Cu2O core-shell nanostructures with varying core surface rugosities are synthesized and investigated for possible photocatalytic applications. HGN surface rugosity is tuned by pH modification during galvanic exchange, and carboxyl groups are utilized as coordination sites to deposit uniform Cu2O shells onto the gold surfaces. Final core-shell structures are verified by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Information regarding chemical state and electronic band structure is acquired by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). Ultrafast transient absorption (TA) reveals that charge separation in bumpy HGN (bHGN)-Cu2O may effectively provide longer-lived photoexcited carriers, offering great potential for utilization in advanced photocatalytic processes.

We developed a microreactor with porous copper fibers for synthesizing nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with a high stability and photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY). By optimizing synthesis conditions, including the reaction temperature, flow rate, ethylenediamine dosage, and porosity of copper fibers, the N-CDs with a high PL QY of 73% were achieved. The PL QY of N-CDs was two times higher with copper fibers than without. The interrelations between the copper fibers with different porosities and the N-CDs were investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results demonstrate that the elemental contents and surface functional groups of N-CDs are significantly influenced by the porosity of copper fibers. The N-CDs can be used to effectively and selectively detect Hg2+ ions with a good linear response in the 0~50 μM Hg2+ ions concentration range, and the lowest limit of detection (LOD) is 2.54 nM, suggesting that the N-CDs have great potential for applications in the fields of environmental and hazard detection. Further studies reveal that the different d orbital energy levels of Hg2+ compared to those of other metal ions can affect the efficiency of electron transfer and thereby result in their different response in fluorescence quenching towards N-CDs.

In principle, the diameter and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) frequency of hollow metal nanostructures can be independently adjusted, allowing the formation of targeted photoactivated structures of specific size and optical functionality. Although tunable SPRs have been reported for various systems, the shift in SPR is usually concomitant with a change in particle size. As such, more advanced tunability, including constant diameter with varying SPR or constant SPR with varying diameter, has not been properly achieved experimentally. Herein, we demonstrate this advanced tunability with hollow gold nanospheres (HGNs). HGNs were synthesized through galvanic exchange using cobalt-based nanoparticles (NPs) as sacrificial scaffolds. Co2B NP scaffolds were prepared by sodium borohydride nucleation of aqueous cobalt chloride and characterized using UV-vis, dynamic light scattering, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Careful control over the size of the Co2B scaffold and its galvanic conversion is essential to realize fine control of the resultant HGN diameter and shell thickness. In pursuit of size control, we introduce B(OH)4- (the final product of NaBH4 hydrolysis) as a growth agent to obtain hydrodynamic diameters ranging from ∼17-85 nm with relative standard deviation

A solid-state synthesis of blue-emitting lead halide nanoclusters has been demonstrated for the first time. The solid-state grinding synthesis provides a facile method to produce highly confined lead bromide clusters under ambient conditions. Both CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite magic-sized clusters and lead halide molecular clusters have been produced, as confirmed by comparison to those synthesized using a ligand-assisted reprecipitation method in terms of electronic absorption, photoluminescence, and solid state characterization. CH3 NH3 PbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) of different sizes (ca. 2.5-100 nm) with high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY; ca. 15-55 %) and product yield have been synthesized using the branched molecules, APTES and NH2 -POSS, as capping ligands. These ligands are sterically hindered, resulting in a uniform size of PNCs. The different capping effects resulting from branched versus straight-chain capping ligands were compared and a possible mechanism proposed to explain the dissolution-precipitation process, which affects the growth and aggregation of PNCs, and thereby their overall stability. Unlike conventional PNCs capped with straight-chain ligands, APTES-capped PNCs show high stability in protic solvents as a result of the strong steric hindrance and propensity for hydrolysis of APTES, which prevent such molecules from reaching and reacting with the core of PNCs.

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) with stable, oxidation resistant, and tunable photoluminescence (PL) are highly desired for various applications including solid-state lighting and biological labeling. However, many current systems for visible light emission involve the use of toxic Cd. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of codoped core/shell ZnSe/ZnS QDs with tunable PL maxima spanning 430-570 nm (average full width at half-maximum of 80 nm) and broad emission extending to 700 nm, through the use of Cu(+) as the primary dopant and trivalent cations (Al(3+), Ga(3+), and In(3+)) as codopants. Furthermore, we developed a unique thiol-based bidentate ligand that significantly improved PL intensity, long-term stability, and resilience to postsynthetic processing. Through comprehensive experimental and computational studies based on steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and density functional theory (DFT), we show that the tunable PL of this system is the result of energy level modification to donor and/or acceptor recombination pathways. By incorporating these findings with local structure information obtained from extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies, we generate a complete energetic model accounting for the photophysical processes in these unique QDs. With the understanding of optical, structural, and electronic properties we gain in this study, this successful codoping strategy may be applied to other QD or related systems to tune the optical properties of semiconductors while maintaining low toxicity.

Multielectron catalytic reactions, such as water oxidation, nitrogen reduction, or hydrogen production in enzymes and inorganic catalysts often involve multimetallic clusters. In these systems, the reaction takes place between metals or metals and ligands to facilitate charge transfer, bond formation/breaking, substrate binding, and release of products. In this study, we present a method to detect X-ray emission signals from multiple elements simultaneously, which allows for the study of charge transfer and the sequential chemistry occurring between elements. Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) probes charge and spin states of metals as well as their ligand environment. A wavelength-dispersive spectrometer based on the von Hamos geometry was used to disperse Kβ signals of multiple elements onto a position detector, enabling an XES spectrum to be measured in a single-shot mode. This overcomes the scanning needs of the scanning spectrometers, providing data free from temporal and normalization errors and therefore ideal to follow sequential chemistry at multiple sites. We have applied this method to study MnOx-based bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In particular, we investigated the effects of adding a secondary element, Ni, to form MnNiOx and its impact on the chemical states and catalytic activity, by tracking the redox characteristics of each element upon sweeping the electrode potential. The detection scheme we describe here is general and can be applied to time-resolved studies of materials consisting of multiple elements, to follow the dynamics of catalytic and electron transfer reactions.

Understanding interfacial charge-transfer processes on the atomic level is crucial to support the rational design of energy-challenge relevant systems such as solar cells, batteries, and photocatalysts. A femtosecond time-resolved core-level photoelectron spectroscopy study is performed that probes the electronic structure of the interface between ruthenium-based N3 dye molecules and ZnO nanocrystals within the first picosecond after photoexcitation and from the unique perspective of the Ru reporter atom at the center of the dye. A transient chemical shift of the Ru 3d inner-shell photolines by (2.3 ± 0.2) eV to higher binding energies is observed 500 fs after photoexcitation of the dye. The experimental results are interpreted with the aid of ab initio calculations using constrained density functional theory. Strong indications for the formation of an interfacial charge-transfer state are presented, providing direct insight into a transient electronic configuration that may limit the efficiency of photoinduced free charge-carrier generation.

Quantum dot (QD) fluorescence is effectively quenched at low concentration by nitroxides bearing amine or carboxylic acid ligands. The association constants and fluorescence quenching of CdSe QDs with these derivatized nitroxides have been examined using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and fluorescence spectroscopy. The EPR spectra in the non-protic solvent toluene are extremely sensitive to intermolecular and intramolecular hydrogen bonding of the functionalized nitroxides. Fluorescence measurements show that quenching of QD luminescence is nonlinear, with a strong dependence on the distance between the radical and the QD. The quenched fluorescence is restored when the surface-bound nitroxides are converted to hydroxylamines by mild reducing agents, or trapped by carbon radicals to form alkoxyamines. EPR studies indicate that photoreduction of the nitroxide occurs in toluene solution upon photoexcitation at 365 nm. However, photolysis in benzene solution gives no photoreduction, suggesting that photoreduction in toluene is independent of the quenching mechanism. The fluorescence quenching of QDs by nitroxide binding is a reversible process.

Highly stable and photoluminescent methylammonium lead halide perovskite quantum dots (MAPbBr3 PQDs) have been synthesized and applied for the fluorescence quenching detection of clothianidin in fruit and vegetable samples. Characterizations using different techniques, including photoluminescence (PL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and time-resolved PL (TRPL), show that static quenching is the dominant fluorescence quenching mechanism of MAPbBr3 PQDs with clothianidin. Hydrogen bonds or van der Waals forces play major roles in the MAPbBr3 PQDs–clothianidin interaction. Under optimized conditions, the relative PL intensity of MAPbBr3 PQDs is linear to the concentration of clothianidin in the 0.0 and 20.0 mg/L range with a detection limit of 0.17 μg/kg. Excellent recoveries of 79.5–115.4% were acquired for radish and banana samples with a relative standard deviation below 9.4%. These results indicate that PQDs can be used for qualitative and quantitative identification of clothianidin, providing an effective detection method for risk prevention and control of neonicotinoid pesticide residues in agricultural products. Background: Research into perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) has uncovered interesting properties compared to their bulk counterparts, including tunable optical properties due to size‐dependent quantum confinement effect (QCE). More recently, smaller PNCs with even stronger QCE have been discovered, such as perovskite magic sized clusters (PMSCs) and ligand passivated PbX2 metal halide molecular clusters (MHMCs) analogous to perovskites. Objective: This review aims to present recent data comparing and contrasting the optical and structural properties of PQDs, PMSCs, and MHMCs, where CsPbBr3 PQDs have first excitonic absorption around 520 nm, the corresponding PMSCS have absorption around 420 nm, and ligand passivated MHMCs absorb around 400 nm. Results: Compared to normal perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), these clusters exhibit both a much bluer optical absorption and emission and larger surface‐to‐volume (S/V) ratio. Due to their larger S/V ratio, the clusters tend to have more surface defects that require more effective passivation for stability. Conclusion: Recent study of novel clusters has led to better understanding of their properties. The sharper optical bands of clusters indicate relatively narrow or single size distribution, which, in conjunction with their blue absorption and emission, makes them potentially attractive for applications in fields such as blue single photon emission.
