We show that quantum number preserving Ans\"atze for variational optimization in quantum chemistry find an elegant mapping to ultracold fermions in optical superlattices. Using native Hubbard dynamics, trial ground states for arbitrary molecular Hamiltonians can be prepared and their molecular energies measured in the lattice. The scheme requires local control over interactions and chemical potentials and global control over tunneling dynamics, but foregoes the need for optical tweezers, shuttling operations, or long-range interactions. We describe a complete compilation pipeline from the molecular Hamiltonian to the sequence of lattice operations, thus providing a concrete link between quantum simulation and chemistry. Our work enables the application of recent quantum algorithmic techniques, such as Double Factorization and quantum Tailored Coupled Cluster, to present-day fermionic optical lattice systems with significant improvements in the required number of experimental repetitions. We provide detailed quantum resource estimates for small non-trivial hardware experiments.

An array of the kaon twist-two, three, four generalised transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (GTMDs) has been investigated within the framework of covariant and confining Dyson-Schwinger equations using contact interaction. GTMDs are of great significance as they encompass information regarding both the generalised parton distributions (GPDs) and the transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs), thus being considered as the parent distribution. From GTMDs, we can derive the twist-two, three, four GPDs and TMDs. GPDs are obtained through the integration of $\bm{k}_{\perp}$ from GTMDs, with a focus on the twist-two GPDs. The first Mellin moments of GPDs yield the form factors of local currents. The second Mellin moments of vector GPDs are related to gravitational form factors. The Wigner distribution can be obtained from a Fourier transform in the transverse space of the GTMDs at skewedness parameter $\xi=0$. The Wigner distributions of an unpolarized, longitudinally polarized, and transversely polarized quark inside the kaon have been calculated. The spin-orbit correlations between a hadron and a quark can be explained based on the phase-space average of Wigner distributions. We investigate the correlation between the longitudinal spin and orbital angular momentum of valence quarks within the pion and kaon. Our findings reveal that $C_z^{u,K}=-0.336$, $C_z^{s,K}=0.242$, and $C_z^{u,\pi}=-0.374$. The parton distribution function in impact parameter space can be derived from the Wigner distribution. The study focuses on the light-front transverse-spin distributions $\rho_u^1\left(\bm{b}_{\bot },\bm{s}_{\perp}\right)$ and $\rho_u^2\left(\bm{b}_{\bot },\bm{s}_{\perp}\right)$, which exhibit distortions, and we calculate their average shift., Comment: 51pages, 58 figures

Sorting algorithms are the most extensively researched topics in computer science and serve for numerous practical applications. Although various sorts have been proposed for efficiency, different architectures offer distinct flavors to the implementation of parallel sorting. In this paper, we propose a hybrid vectorized merge sort on ARM NEON, named NEON Merge Sort for short (NEON-MS). In detail, according to the granted register functions, we first identify the optimal register number to avoid the register-to-memory access, due to the write-back of intermediate outcomes. More importantly, following the generic merge sort framework that primarily uses sorting network for column sort and merging networks for three types of vectorized merge, we further improve their structures for high efficiency in an unified asymmetry way: 1) it makes the optimal sorting networks with few comparators become possible; 2) hybrid implementation of both serial and vectorized merges incurs the pipeline with merge instructions highly interleaved. Experiments on a single FT2000+ core show that NEON-MS is 3.8 and 2.1 times faster than std::sort and boost::block\_sort, respectively, on average. In this paper, we construct a pretraining framework for fluid environment perception, which includes an information compression model and the corresponding pretraining method. We test this framework in a two-cylinder problem through numerical simulation. The results show that after unsupervised pretraining with this framework, the intelligent agent can acquire key features of surrounding fluid environment, thereby adapting more quickly and effectively to subsequent multi-scenario tasks. In our research, these tasks include perceiving the position of the upstream obstacle and actively avoiding shedding vortices in the flow field to achieve drag reduction. Better performance of the pretrained agent is discussed in the sensitivity analysis.

A Flying Bird Dataset for Surveillance Videos (FBD-SV-2024) is introduced and tailored for the development and performance evaluation of flying bird detection algorithms in surveillance videos. This dataset comprises 483 video clips, amounting to 28,694 frames in total. Among them, 23,833 frames contain 28,366 instances of flying birds. The proposed dataset of flying birds in surveillance videos is collected from realistic surveillance scenarios, where the birds exhibit characteristics such as inconspicuous features in single frames (in some instances), generally small sizes, and shape variability during flight. These attributes pose challenges that need to be addressed when developing flying bird detection methods for surveillance videos. Finally, advanced (video) object detection algorithms were selected for experimentation on the proposed dataset, and the results demonstrated that this dataset remains challenging for the algorithms above. Unveiling atomic structures is significant for the relationship construction between microscopic configurations and macroscopic properties of materials. However, we still lack a rapid, accurate, and robust approach to automatically resolve complex patterns in atomic-resolution microscopy. Here, we present a Trident strategy-enhanced disentangled representation learning method (a generative model), which utilizes a few unlabeled experimental images with abundant low-cost simulated images to generate a large corpus of annotated simulation data that closely resembles experimental conditions, realizing simultaneous achievement of high quality and large volumes of the training dataset. A structural inference model is then trained via a residual neural network which can directly deduce the interlayer slip and rotation of diversified and complicated stacking patterns at van der Waals (vdWs) interfaces with picometer-scale accuracy across various materials (ReS2, ReSe2, and MoS2) with different layer numbers (bilayer and trilayers) and demonstrates robustness to defects, imaging quality, and surface contaminations. The framework can also identify pattern transition interfaces, quantify subtle motif variations, and discriminate moir\'e patterns that are undistinguishable in frequency domains. The high-throughput processing ability of our method helps discover a novel vdW epitaxy where various thermodynamically favorable slip stackings can coexist, demonstrating the machine learning contribution to the new knowledge emergence., Comment: 25 pages,5 figures

In this paper, light-front wave functions (LFWFs) of the $\rho$ meson are evaluated in the framework of Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model using the proper time regularization scheme. The transverse momentum dependent parton distributions (TMDs) of the $\rho$ meson are derived from the overlap representations of the LFWFs. We investigate the $\bm{k}_{\perp}$-weighted moments and the $x$-dependent average transverse momentum $\langle k_{\perp}^n(x)\rangle_{\alpha}$ of $\rho$ meson TMDs, $\langle k_{\perp}^n(x)\rangle_{\alpha}$ shows the typical transverse momenta of quark TMDs in our model. Our findings indicate that the average transverse momenta of $\langle k_{\perp}(x)\rangle_{\alpha}$ fall within the range of $[0.3, 0.45]$ GeV, while $\langle k_{\perp}^2(x)\rangle_{\alpha}$ are in the region of $[0.15, 0.30]$ GeV. Our TMDs and parton distribution function (PDFs) satisfy the positive constraints very well. The spin densities inside the $\rho$ meson in the transverse momentum space are investigated, the results show that the quark and the target polarized in the longitudinal or in the transverse directions the distribution are axially symmetric. The unpolarized symmetric distribution when the quark is longitudinally polarized and the target is transversely polarized, or on the contrary exhibit the dipolar distortions. The results of TMDs from LFWFs and the covariant approach are compared. The results show that TMDs from LFWFs satisfy the positive constraints better than TMDs from the covariant approach. The $x$-moments of $\rho$ meson PDFs, $\langle x\rangle_{g_L}$ is larger than the covariant approach. In addition, the quark spin densities of the $\rho$ meson, particularly the $\rho_{\uparrow \downarrow}\left(k_x,k_y\right)=f-\frac{1}{3}f_{LL}-g_L$ in the covariant approach it is negative, but $\rho_{\uparrow \downarrow}\left(k_x,k_y\right)$ from LFWFs is positive., Comment: 14 pages, 27 figures

A non-extensive (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic model for multi-particle production processes, NEX-CLVisc, is developed in the framework of CLVisc where the viscous corrections are turned off. It assumes that the non-extensive effects consistently exist in the initial conditions set by the optical Glauber model, the equation of state and the hadron kinetic freeze-out procedure. The model is then applied to simulate the pseudo-rapidity ($\eta$) distribution, the transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) spectra and the $p_{\rm T}$-differential elliptic flow ($v_2$) of charged particles in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=$ 2.76 TeV and 5.02 TeV, respectively. It is found that the model can reasonably well reproduce the experimental data of the $\eta$ distribution and the charged-particle spectra in a $p_{\rm T}$ range up to 6-8 GeV/c. When compared with the ideal hydrodynamic model, the $p_{\rm T}$-differential $v_2$ of charged particles is suppressed in the NEX-CLVisc model, which is similar to that observed in the viscous hydrodynamic model. Moreover, due to the lack of the viscous corrections and the event-by-event fluctuation, the model can only describe the $p_{\rm T}$-differential $v_2$ up to 4 GeV/c, which is smaller than the applicable range for the particle $p_{\rm T}$ spectra., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables

With the development of deep learning techniques, deep recommendation models also achieve remarkable improvements in terms of recommendation accuracy. However, due to the large number of candidate items in practice and the high cost of preference computation, these methods also suffer from low efficiency of recommendation. The recently proposed tree-based deep recommendation models alleviate the problem by directly learning tree structure and representations under the guidance of recommendation objectives. However, such models have shortcomings. The max-heap assumption in the hierarchical tree, in which the preference for a parent node should be the maximum between the preferences for its children, is difficult to satisfy in their binary classification objectives. To this end, we propose Tree-based Deep Retrieval (TDR for short) for efficient recommendation. In TDR, all the trees generated during the training process are retained to form the forest. When learning the node representation of each tree, we have to satisfy the max-heap assumption as much as possible and mimic beam search behavior over the tree in the training stage. This is achieved by TDR to regard the training task as multi-classification over tree nodes at the same level. However, the number of tree nodes grows exponentially with levels, making us train the preference model with the guidance of the sampled-softmax technique. The experiments are conducted on real-world datasets, validating the effectiveness of the proposed preference model learning method and tree learning method.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is characterized by irregular electrical impulses originating in the atria, which can lead to severe complications and even death. Due to the intermittent nature of the AF, early and timely monitoring of AF is critical for patients to prevent further exacerbation of the condition. Although ambulatory ECG Holter monitors provide accurate monitoring, the high cost of these devices hinders their wider adoption. Current mobile-based AF detection systems offer a portable solution. However, these systems have various applicability issues, such as being easily affected by environmental factors and requiring significant user effort. To overcome the above limitations, we present AcousAF, a novel AF detection system based on acoustic sensors of smartphones. Particularly, we explore the potential of pulse wave acquisition from the wrist using smartphone speakers and microphones. In addition, we propose a well-designed framework comprised of pulse wave probing, pulse wave extraction, and AF detection to ensure accurate and reliable AF detection. We collect data from 20 participants utilizing our custom data collection application on the smartphone. Inspired by the BESIII newest observation of X(2370) glueball-like particle, we search its productions in both $e^+e^-$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 4.95 GeV and proton-proton (pp) collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV with a parton and hadron cascade model PACIAE. In this model, the final partonic state (FPS) and the final hadronic state (FHS) are consecutively simulated and recorded. The X(2370) glueball- or tetraquark-state is then, respectively, recombined by two gluons or four quarks $ss\bar{s}\bar{s}$ in the FPS using the quantum statistical mechanics inspired dynamically constrained phase-space coalescence (DCPC) model. The X(2370) molecular-state is recombined by the baryon-antibaryon of $\Lambda$-$\bar{\Lambda}$ or $\Sigma$-$\bar{\Sigma}$, or by three mesons of $\pi^+\pi^{-}\eta'$, $K^+K^-\eta'$, or $K_S^0K_S^0\eta'$ in the FHS using DCPC model. In both $e^+e^-$ and pp collisions, significant discrepancies in the yields, the transverse momentum spectra and the rapidity distributions among the X(2370) glueball-, tetraquark-, and molecular-state are observed. These discrepancies are proposed as valuable criteria identifying the X(2370) different states from each other. Our results not only support the BESIII observation of glueball-like particle $\rm X(2370)$ production in $e^+e^-$ collisions, but also serve as a prediction for the $\rm X(2370)$ production in pp collisions. We present a comprehensive study based on multi-wavelength observations from the NuSTAR, NICER, Swift, Fermi, NEOWISE, and ATCA telescopes during the 2022 outburst of the black hole X-ray binary IGR J17091-3624. Our investigation concentrates on the heartbeat-like variability in the X-ray emission, with the aim of using it as a tool to unravel the origin of the non-thermal emission during the heartbeat state. Through X-ray timing and spectral analysis, we observe that the heartbeat-like variability correlates with changes in the disk temperature, supporting the disk radiation pressure instability scenario. Moreover, in addition to a Comptonization component, our time-averaged and phase-resolved spectroscopy reveal the presence of a power-law component that varies independently from the disk component. Combined with the radio to X-ray spectral energy distribution fitting, our results suggest that the power-law component could originate from synchrotron self-Compton radiation in the jet, which requires a strong magnetic field of about $B = (0.3$-$3.5)\times10^6$ G. Additionally, assuming that IGR J17091-3624 and GRS 1915+105 share the same radio-X-ray correlation coefficient during both the hard and the heartbeat states, we obtain a distance of $13.7\pm2.3$ kpc for IGR J17091-3624., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

Pictor A is a $\gamma$-ray emitting radio galaxy and has a bright hotspot called WHS, located $\sim$4 arcmin away from the nucleus. In this letter, we present an analysis of its 16-year Fermi-LAT data and report the first Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) observation for this source. Our analysis of the Fermi-LAT observations reveals evidence of two components in the average $\gamma$-ray spectrum of Pictor A, exhibiting a statistically significant hardening from $\Gamma^1_{\gamma}=3.25\pm0.15$ to $\Gamma^2_{\gamma}=1.81\pm0.07$ at a break energy of $2.46\pm0.09$ GeV. The evident variability of $\gamma$-rays is observed in Pictor A. Interestingly, the variability is dominated by the component below the break energy, and the component above the break energy shows no variability. Furthermore, we find that a power-law function can adequately fit the spectrum during high-flux states, whereas a broken power-law is still required to explain the spectrum during low-flux state. We suggest that the low-energy component originates from the nucleus, while the high-energy component primarily stems from WHS. The broadband spectral energy distributions of both nucleus and WHS can be well represented by a simple leptonic model, with both $\gamma$-ray components attributed to the synchrotron-self-Compton (SSC) process. The analysis of IXPE data on the nucleus yields an upper limit to the polarization degree $\Pi_{\rm X}<$8.9\% in the 2--8 keV band, agreeing with its X-ray emission originating from SSC. However, $\Pi_{\rm X}=23.5\%\pm5.6\%$ is observed at a confidence level of $>99\%$ in the 5--7 keV band, and the possible physical origin of this narrow-energy-band polarization signal is discussed., Comment: 14 Pages, 4 Figures, 3 Tables, submitted, comments are welcome

This paper introduces a decomposition-based method to investigate the Lipschitz stability of solution mappings for general LASSO-type problems with convex data fidelity and $\ell_1$-regularization terms. The solution mappings are considered as set-valued mappings of the measurement vector and the regularization parameter. Based on the proposed method, we provide two regularity conditions for Lipschitz stability: the weak and strong conditions. The weak condition implies the Lipschitz continuity of solution mapping at the point in question, regardless of solution uniqueness. The strong condition yields the local single-valued and Lipschitz continuity of solution mapping. When applied to the LASSO and Square Root LASSO (SR-LASSO), the weak condition is new, while the strong condition is equivalent to some sufficient conditions for Lipschitz stability found in the literature. Specifically, our results reveal that the solution mapping of the LASSO is globally (Hausdorff) Lipschitz continuous without any assumptions. In contrast, the solution mapping of the SR-LASSO is not always Lipschitz continuous. A sufficient and necessary condition is proposed for its local Lipschitz property. Furthermore, we fully characterize the local single-valued and Lipschitz continuity of solution mappings for both problems using the strong condition., Comment: 31 pages

Existing Camouflaged Object Detection (COD) methods rely heavily on large-scale pixel-annotated training sets, which are both time-consuming and labor-intensive. Although weakly supervised methods offer higher annotation efficiency, their performance is far behind due to the unclear visual demarcations between foreground and background in camouflaged images. In this paper, we explore the potential of using boxes as prompts in camouflaged scenes and introduce the first weakly semi-supervised COD method, aiming for budget-efficient and high-precision camouflaged object segmentation with an extremely limited number of fully labeled images. Critically, learning from such limited set inevitably generates pseudo labels with serious noisy pixels. To address this, we propose a noise correction loss that facilitates the model's learning of correct pixels in the early learning stage, and corrects the error risk gradients dominated by noisy pixels in the memorization stage, ultimately achieving accurate segmentation of camouflaged objects from noisy labels. The advent of Ethereum 2.0 has introduced significant changes, particularly the shift to Proof-of-Stake consensus. This change presents new opportunities and challenges for arbitrage. Amidst these changes, we introduce BriDe Arbitrager, a novel tool designed for Ethereum 2.0 that leverages Bribery-driven attacks to Delay block production and increase arbitrage gains. The main idea is to allow malicious proposers to delay block production by bribing validators/proposers, thereby gaining more time to identify arbitrage opportunities. Through analysing the bribery process, we design an adaptive bribery strategy. Additionally, we propose a Delayed Transaction Ordering Algorithm to leverage the delayed time to amplify arbitrage profits for malicious proposers. To ensure fairness and automate the bribery process, we design and implement a bribery smart contract and a bribery client. As a result, BriDe Arbitrager enables adversaries controlling a limited (< 1/4) fraction of the voting powers to delay block production via bribery and arbitrage more profit. Extensive experimental results based on Ethereum historical transactions demonstrate that BriDe Arbitrager yields an average of 8.66 ETH (16,442.23 USD) daily profits. Furthermore, our approach does not trigger any slashing mechanisms and remains effective even under Proposer Builder Separation and other potential mechanisms will be adopted by Ethereum.

Sharding enhances blockchain scalability by partitioning nodes into multiple groups for concurrent transaction processing. Configuring a large number of \emph{small shards} helps improve the transaction concurrency of a sharding system. However, it increases the fraction of malicious nodes within each shard, easily leading to shard corruption and jeopardizing system security. Some existing works have attempted to improve concurrency by reducing the shard size while maintaining security. However, they often require frequent and time-consuming recovery of corrupted shards, leading to severe system stagnation. Also, they usually require network-wide consensus to guarantee security, which limits scalability. To address these issues, we propose DL-Chain, a blockchain sharding system that can securely provide \emph{high concurrency with stable and scalable performance.} Our core idea is a \underline{D}ual-\underline{L}ayer architecture and consensus, which consists of numerous smaller proposer shards (PSs) for transaction processing and multiple larger finalizer committees (FCs) for transaction finalization. To avoid system stagnation and thus guarantee stable performance, we ensure PSs' liveness even if they are corrupted through the cooperation of PSs and FCs, thus eliminating the recovery process of corrupted PSs. To better trade-off security and scalability, we fine-tune the FCs to enable multiple FCs to coexist securely. As a result, DL-Chain allows a larger fraction of malicious nodes in each PS ($<1/2$) and thus can securely configure smaller shards for boosted stable and scalable concurrency. Evaluation results show that DL-Chain achieves up to 10 times improvement in throughput compared to existing solutions and provides stable concurrency with up to 2,550 nodes.

Blockchain sharding improves the scalability of blockchain systems by partitioning the whole blockchain state, nodes, and transaction workloads into different shards. However, existing blockchain sharding systems generally suffer from a small number of shards, resulting in limited concurrency. The main reason is that existing sharding systems require large shard sizes to ensure security. To enhance the concurrency of blockchain sharding securely, we propose SpiralShard. The intuition is to allow the existence of some shards with a larger fraction of malicious nodes (i.e., corrupted shards), thus reducing shard sizes. SpiralShard can configure more and smaller shards for higher concurrency at the same network size. To ensure security with the existence of corrupted shards, we propose the Linked Cross-shard Endorsement (LCE) protocol. According to our LCE protocol, the blocks of each shard are sequentially verified and endorsed by a group of shards before being finalized. As a result, a corrupted shard can eliminate forks with the help of the other shards. We implement SpiralShard based on Harmony and conduct extensive evaluations. Experimental results show that, compared with Harmony, SpiralShard achieves around 19x throughput gain under a large network size with 4,000+ nodes.

A promising way to overcome the scalability limitations of the current blockchain is to use sharding, which is to split the transaction processing among multiple, smaller groups of nodes. A well-performed blockchain sharding system requires both high performance and high security in both intra- and cross-shard perspectives. However, existing protocols either have issues on protecting security or trade off great performance for security. In this paper, we propose SP-Chain, a blockchain sharding system with enhanced Security and Performance for both intra- and cross-shard perspectives. For intra-shard aspect, we design a two-phase concurrent voting scheme to provide high system throughput and low transaction confirmation latency. Moreover, we propose an efficient unbiased leader rotation scheme to ensure high performance under malicious behavior. For cross-shard aspect, a proof-assisted efficient cross-shard transaction processing mechanism is proposed to guard the cross-shard transactions with low overhead. We implement SP-Chain based on Harmony, and evaluate its performance via large-scale deployment. Extensive evaluations suggest that SP-Chain can process more than 10,000 tx/sec under malicious behaviors with a confirmation latency of 7.6s in a network of 4,000 nodes.

This paper introduces and develops novel coderivative-based Newton methods with Wolfe linesearch conditions to solve various classes of problems in nonsmooth optimization. We first propose a generalized regularized Newton method with Wolfe linesearch (GRNM-W) for unconstrained $C^{1,1}$ minimization problems (which are second-order nonsmooth) and establish global as well as local superlinear convergence of their iterates. To deal with convex composite minimization problems (which are first-order nonsmooth and can be constrained), we combine the proposed GRNM-W with two algorithmic frameworks: the forward-backward envelope and the augmented Lagrangian method resulting in the two new algorithms called CNFB and CNAL, respectively. Finally, we present numerical results to solve Lasso and support vector machine problems appearing in, e.g., machine learning and statistics, which demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms.

This paper presents the first analysis of parameter-uniform convergence for a hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) method applied to a singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem in 2D using a Shishkin mesh. The primary difficulty lies in accurately estimating the convection term in the layer, where existing methods often fall short. To address this, a novel error control technique is employed, along with reasonable assumptions regarding the stabilization function. The results show that, with polynomial degrees not exceeding $k$, the method achieves supercloseness of almost $k+\frac{1}{2}$ order in an energy norm. Numerical experiments confirm the theoretical accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

Mathematical models are indispensable to the system biology toolkit for studying the structure and behavior of intracellular signaling networks. A common approach to modeling is to develop a system of equations that encode the known biology using approximations and simplifying assumptions. As a result, the same signaling pathway can be represented by multiple models, each with its set of underlying assumptions, which opens up challenges for model selection and decreases certainty in model predictions. Here, we use Bayesian multimodel inference to develop a framework to increase certainty in systems biology models. Using models of the extracellular regulated kinase (ERK) pathway, we first show that multimodel inference increases predictive certainty and yields predictors that are robust to changes in the set of available models. We then show that predictions made with multimodel inference are robust to data uncertainties introduced by decreasing the measurement duration and reducing the sample size. Finally, we use multimodel inference to identify a new model to explain experimentally measured sub-cellular location-specific ERK activity dynamics. Photo-doped Mott insulators can exhibit novel photocarrier transport and relaxation dynamics and non-equilibrium phases. However, time-resolved real-space imaging of these processes are still lacking. Here, we use scanning ultrafast electron microscopy (SUEM) to directly visualize the spatial-temporal evolution of photoexcited species in a spin-orbit assisted Mott insulator {\alpha}-RuCl3. At low optical fluences, we observe extremely long hot photocarrier transport time over one nanosecond, almost an order of magnitude longer than any known values in conventional semiconductors. At higher optical fluences, we observe nonlinear features suggesting a photo-induced insulator-to-metal transition, which is unusual in a large-gap Mott insulator. Our results demonstrate the rich physics in a photo-doped Mott insulator that can be extracted from spatial-temporal imaging and showcase the capability of SUEM to sensitively probe photoexcitations in strongly correlated electron systems., Comment: Comments are welcome. Multi-Objective Bi-Level Optimization (MOBLO) addresses nested multi-objective optimization problems common in a range of applications. However, its multi-objective and hierarchical bilevel nature makes it notably complex. Gradient-based MOBLO algorithms have recently grown in popularity, as they effectively solve crucial machine learning problems like meta-learning, neural architecture search, and reinforcement learning. Unfortunately, these algorithms depend on solving a sequence of approximation subproblems with high accuracy, resulting in adverse time and memory complexity that lowers their numerical efficiency. To address this issue, we propose a gradient-based algorithm for MOBLO, called gMOBA, which has fewer hyperparameters to tune, making it both simple and efficient. Additionally, we demonstrate the theoretical validity by accomplishing the desirable Pareto stationarity. Numerical experiments confirm the practical efficiency of the proposed method and verify the theoretical results. To accelerate the convergence of gMOBA, we introduce a beneficial L2O neural network (called L2O-gMOBA) implemented as the initialization phase of our gMOBA algorithm. Horizontally aligned carbon nanotube (HACNT) arrays hold significant potential for various applications in nanoelectronics and material science. However, their high-throughput characterization remains challenging due to the lack of methods with both high efficiency and high accuracy. Here, we present a novel technique, Calibrated Absolute Optical Contrast (CAOC), achieved through the implementation of differential principles to filter out stray signals and high-resolution calibration to endow optical contrast with physical significance. CAOC offers major advantages over previous characterization techniques, providing consistent and reliable measurements of HACNT array density with high throughput and non-destructive assessment. To validate its utility, we demonstrate wafer-scale uniformity assessment by rapid density mapping. This technique not only facilitates the practical evaluation of HACNT arrays but also provides insights into balancing high throughput and high resolution in nanomaterial characterization.

Constrained bilevel optimization tackles nested structures present in constrained learning tasks like constrained meta-learning, adversarial learning, and distributed bilevel optimization. However, existing bilevel optimization methods mostly are typically restricted to specific constraint settings, such as linear lower-level constraints. In this work, we overcome this limitation and develop a new single-loop, Hessian-free constrained bilevel algorithm capable of handling more general lower-level constraints. We achieve this by employing a doubly regularized gap function tailored to the constrained lower-level problem, transforming constrained bilevel optimization into an equivalent single-level optimization problem with a single smooth constraint. We rigorously establish the non-asymptotic convergence analysis of the proposed algorithm under the convexity of lower-level problem, avoiding the need for strong convexity assumptions on the lower-level objective or coupling convexity assumptions on lower-level constraints found in existing literature. Additionally, the generality of our method allows for its extension to bilevel optimization with minimax lower-level problem. We evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of our algorithm on various synthetic problems, typical hyperparameter learning tasks, and generative adversarial network.

While stochastic bilevel optimization methods have been extensively studied for addressing large-scale nested optimization problems in machine learning, it remains an open question whether the optimal complexity bounds for solving bilevel optimization are the same as those in single-level optimization. Our main result resolves this question: SPABA, an adaptation of the PAGE method for nonconvex optimization in (Li et al., 2021) to the bilevel setting, can achieve optimal sample complexity in both the finite-sum and expectation settings. We show the optimality of SPABA by proving that there is no gap in complexity analysis between stochastic bilevel and single-level optimization when implementing PAGE. Notably, as indicated by the results of (Dagr\'eou et al., 2022), there might exist a gap in complexity analysis when implementing other stochastic gradient estimators, like SGD and SAGA. In addition to SPABA, we propose several other single-loop stochastic bilevel algorithms, that either match or improve the state-of-the-art sample complexity results, leveraging our convergence rate and complexity analysis. Multi-modal Chain-of-Thought (MCoT) requires models to leverage knowledge from both textual and visual modalities for step-by-step reasoning, which gains increasing attention. Nevertheless, the current MCoT benchmark still faces some challenges: (1) absence of visual modal reasoning, (2) single-step visual modal reasoning, and (3) Domain missing, thereby hindering the development of MCoT. Motivated by this, we introduce a novel benchmark (M$^3$CoT) to address the above challenges, advancing the multi-domain, multi-step, and multi-modal CoT. Additionally, we conduct a thorough evaluation involving abundant MCoT approaches on Vision Large Language Models (VLLMs). In addition, we highlight that the current VLLMs still struggle to correctly reason in M$^3$CoT and there remains a large gap between existing VLLMs and human performance in M$^3$CoT, despite their superior results on previous MCoT benchmarks. To our knowledge, we take the first meaningful step toward the multi-domain, multi-step, and multi-modal scenario in MCoT. This work focuses on addressing two major challenges in the context of large-scale nonconvex Bi-Level Optimization (BLO) problems, which are increasingly applied in machine learning due to their ability to model nested structures. These challenges involve ensuring computational efficiency and providing theoretical guarantees. While recent advances in scalable BLO algorithms have primarily relied on lower-level convexity simplification, our work specifically tackles large-scale BLO problems involving nonconvexity in both the upper and lower levels. We simultaneously address computational and theoretical challenges by introducing an innovative single-loop gradient-based algorithm, utilizing the Moreau envelope-based reformulation, and providing non-asymptotic convergence analysis for general nonconvex BLO problems. Notably, our algorithm relies solely on first-order gradient information, enhancing its practicality and efficiency, especially for large-scale BLO learning tasks. We validate our approach's effectiveness through experiments on various synthetic problems, two typical hyper-parameter learning tasks, and a real-world neural architecture search application, collectively demonstrating its superior performance., Comment: Accepted by ICML 2024

NGC 4278, a Low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN), is generally classified as a low-ionization nuclear emission line region (LINER). Recently, it has been reported to be associated with a very high energy $\gamma$-ray source 1LHAASO J1219+2915 in the first Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory source catalog. However, no associated counterpart has been detected by analyzing the data collected by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. By analyzing its X-ray observation data from Swift-XRT, we find NGC 4278 is in a high-flux state on MJD 59546, with the X-ray flux more than one order of magnitude higher than that observed $\sim$ 11.7 year earlier by Chandra. Interestingly, this Swift-XRT observation was conducted during the active phase of the $\gamma$-ray source 1LHAASO J1219+2915. We propose that the detection of VHE $\gamma$-rays from NGC 4278 may be attributed to the presence of an active nucleus in its center. To reproduce the spectral energy distribution (SED) of NGC 4278, we employ a one-zone leptonic model, typically used for fitting broadband SEDs of BL Lacs, and find that a smaller magnetic field strength is required than that of typical TeV BL Lacs. Furthermore, NGC 4278 exhibits significantly lower luminosity in both radio and TeV bands when compared with typical TeV BL Lacs. In the radio-luminosity vs. Eddington-ratio plane, NGC 4278 shows greater similarity to Seyfert galaxies and LINERs rather than BL Lacs; however, it still roughly follows the extension towards lower luminosity seen in BL Lacs., Comment: 2 Comments, 14 Pages, 8 Figures, 2 Tables, Accepted for Publication in ApJ

The radio galaxy PKS 1007+142 is classified as a compact steep-spectrum source (CSS) and belongs to the class of young Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). In this paper, we investigate the $\gamma$-ray emission from this CSS by conducting a comprehensive analysis of the 15 yr Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) observation data. The Fermi-LAT latest Source Catalog, 4FGL-DR4, includes an unassociated $\gamma$-ray source, 4FGL J1010.0+1416, located at 0.24{\deg} away from the radio position of PKS 1007+142. Using the 15 yr Fermi-LAT observation data, we re-estimate the best-fit position of the $\gamma$-ray source and find that PKS 1007+142 is in close proximity to the $\gamma$-ray source and falls within its 68% error circle. Therefore, we conclude that PKS 1007+142 is the most plausible counterpart to the unassociated LAT source with a detection test statistics (TS) $\sim$43.4 ($\sim 6.6\sigma$). PKS 1007+142 exhibits a steep power-law spectrum in the 0.1--300 GeV band, with a photon spectral index ($\Gamma_{\gamma}$) of $2.86\pm0.17$. The average flux in the considered time interval is $\rm (2.14\pm0.34)\times10^{-12}\ erg\ cm^{-2}\ s^{-1}$. Comparing PKS 1007+142 with other $\gamma$-ray emitting AGNs in both the $L_{\gamma}-\Gamma_{\gamma}$ and $L_\gamma-L_{\rm 1.4GHz}$ planes, it shows a softer $\gamma$-ray spectrum and lower luminosity compared to other $\gamma$-ray emitting CSSs. This paper tackles the deployment challenges of Simultaneous Transmitting and Reflecting Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (STAR-RIS) in communication systems. Unlike existing works that use fixed deployment setups or solely optimize the location, this paper emphasizes the joint optimization of the location and orientation of STAR-RIS. This enables searching across all user grouping possibilities and fully boosting the system's performance. We consider a sum rate maximization problem with joint optimization and hybrid beamforming design. An offline heuristic solution is proposed for the problem, developed based on differential evolution and semi-definite programming methods. In particular, a point-point representation is proposed for characterizing and exploiting the user-grouping. A balanced grouping method is designed to achieve a desired user grouping with low complexity. Numerical results demonstrate the substantial performance gains achievable through optimal deployment design., Comment: 30 pages

A large electric field is typically present in anodic or passive oxide films. Stresses induced by such a large electric field are critical in understanding the breakdown mechanism of thin oxide films and improving their corrosion resistance. In this work, we consider electromechanical coupling through the electrostrictive effect. A continuum model incorporating lattice misfit and electric field-induced stresses is developed. We perform a linear stability analysis of the full coupled model and show that, for typical oxides, neglecting electrostriction underestimates the film's instability, especially in systems with a large electric field. Moreover, a region where electrostriction can potentially provide a stabilizing effect is identified, allowing electrostriction to enhance corrosion resistance. We identified an equilibrium electric field intrinsic to the system and the corresponding equilibrium film thickness. The film's stability is very sensitive to the electric field: a 40 percent deviation from the equilibrium electric field can change the maximum growth rate by nearly an order of magnitude. Moreover, our model reduces to classical morphological instability models in the limit of misfit-only, electrostatic-only, and no-electrostriction cases. Finally, the effect of various parameters on the film's stability is studied.

Carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs) are showing significant potential in various fields, such as electronics, energy, and mechanics. However, their practical applications face synthesis challenges stemming from the complexities of structural control, large-area uniformity, and high yield. Current research methodologies fall short in addressing the multi-variable, coupled interactions inherent to CBNs production. Machine learning methods excel at navigating such complexities. Their integration with automated synthesis platforms has demonstrated remarkable potential in accelerating chemical synthesis research, but remains underexplored in the nanomaterial domain. Here we introduce Carbon Copilot (CARCO), an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven platform that integrates transformer-based language models tailored for carbon materials, robotic chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and data-driven machine learning models, empowering accelerated research of CBNs synthesis. Employing CARCO, we demonstrate innovative catalyst discovery by predicting a superior Titanium-Platinum bimetallic catalyst for high-density horizontally aligned carbon nanotube (HACNT) array synthesis, validated through over 500 experiments. Furthermore, with the assistance of millions of virtual experiments, we achieved an unprecedented 56.25% precision in synthesizing HACNT arrays with predetermined densities in the real world. All were accomplished within just 43 days. This work not only advances the field of HACNT arrays but also exemplifies the integration of AI with human expertise to overcome the limitations of traditional experimental approaches, marking a paradigm shift in nanomaterials research and paving the way for broader applications.

Unlocking the potential of topological order within many-body spin systems has long been a central pursuit in the realm of quantum materials. Despite extensive efforts, the quest for a versatile platform enabling site-selective spin manipulation, essential for tuning and probing diverse topological phases, has persisted. Here, we utilize on-surface synthesis to construct spin-1/2 alternating-exchange Heisenberg (AH) chains[1] with antiferromagnetic couplings $J_1$ and $J_2$ by covalently linking Clar's goblets -- nanographenes each hosting two antiferromagnetically-coupled unpaired electrons[2]. Utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy, we exert atomic-scale control over the spin chain lengths, parities and exchange-coupling terminations, and probe their magnetic response by means of inelastic tunneling spectroscopy. Our investigation confirms the gapped nature of bulk excitations in the chains, known as triplons[3]. Besides, the triplon dispersion relation is successfully extracted from the spatial variation of tunneling spectral amplitudes. Furthermore, depending on the parity and termination of chains, we observe varying numbers of in-gap $S=1/2$ edge spins, enabling the determination of the degeneracy of distinct topological ground states in the thermodynamic limit-either 1, 2, or 4. By monitoring interactions between these edge spins, we identify the exponential decay of spin correlations. Our experimental findings, corroborated by theoretical calculations, present a phase-controlled many-body platform, opening promising avenues toward the development of spin-based quantum devices.

The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model is utilized to investigate the pion and kaon photon leading-twist transition distribution amplitudes using proper time regularization. Separately, the properties of the vector and axial vector pion photon transition distribution amplitudes are examined, and the results meet the desired properties. Our study involves sum rule and polynomiality condition. The vector and axial vector pion photon transition form factors that are present in the $\pi^+\rightarrow \gamma e^+ \nu$ process are the first Mellin moments of the pion photon transition distribution amplitudes. The vector transition form factor originates from the internal structure of hadrons, the axial current can be coupled to a pion, this pion is virtual, and its contribution will be present independently of the external hadrons. The kaon transition form factors are similar. The vector form factor's value at zero momentum transfer is determined by the axial anomaly, while this is not the case for the axial one. The vector and axial form factors, as well as the neutral pion vector form factor $F_{\pi \gamma \gamma}(t)$, are depicted. According to our findings, the pion axial transition form factor is harder than the vector transition form factor and harder than the electromagnetic form factor. Mrk 501 is a prototypical high-synchrotron-peaked blazar (HBL) and serves as one of the primary targets for the {\it Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer} ({\it IXPE}). In this study, we report X-ray polarization measurements of Mrk 501 based on six {\it IXPE} observations. The detection of X-ray polarization at a confidence level exceeding 99\% is achieved in four out of the six observations conducted across the entire energy range (2--8 keV) of {\it IXPE}. The maximum polarization degree ($\Pi_{\rm X}$) is measured to be $15.8\%\pm2.8\%$, accompanied by a polarization angle ($\psi_{\rm X}$) of $98.0\deg\pm5.1\deg$ at a confidence level of $5.6 \sigma$. During the remaining two observations, only an upper limit of $\Pi_{\rm X}<$12\% could be derived at the 99\% confidence level. No temporal variability in polarization is observed throughout all six {\it IXPE} observations for Mrk 501. A discernible trend of energy-dependent variation in the polarization degree is detected in optical spectropolarimetry; however, no analogous indication is observed in $\Pi_{\rm X}$. The chromatic behavior of $\Pi$ and the consistent values of $\psi$ across different frequencies from X-rays to radio waves, along with the agreement between $\psi$ and jet position angle, strongly support the interpretation of the energy-stratified model with shock-accelerated particles in the jet of Mrk 501. This paper investigates the supercloseness of a singularly perturbed convection diffusion problem using the direct discontinuous Galerkin (DDG) method on a Shishkin mesh. The main technical difficulties lie in controlling the diffusion term inside the layer, the convection term outside the layer, and the inter element jump term caused by the discontinuity of the numerical solution. The main idea is to design a new composite interpolation, in which a global projection is used outside the layer to satisfy the interface conditions determined by the selection of numerical flux, thereby eliminating or controlling the troublesome terms on the unit interface; and inside the layer, Gau{\ss} Lobatto projection is used to improve the convergence order of the diffusion term. On the basis of that, by selecting appropriate parameters in the numerical flux, we obtain the supercloseness result of almost $k+1$ order under an energy norm. Numerical experiments support our main theoretical conclusion.

We report on the detection of extended $\gamma$-ray emission from lobes in the radio galaxy NGC 6251 using observation data of Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT). The maximum likelihood analysis results show that a radio morphology template provides a better fit than a point-like source description for the observational data at a confidence level of 8.1$\sigma$, and the contribution of lobes accounts for more than 50\% of the total $\gamma$-ray flux. Furthermore, the $\gamma$-ray energy spectra show a significant disparity in shape between the core and lobe regions, with a curved log-parabola shape observed in core region and a power-law form observed in lobes. Neither the core region nor the northwest lobe displays the significant flux variations in the long-term $\gamma$-ray light curves. The broadband spectral energy distributions of both core region and northwest lobe can be will explained with a single-zone leptonic model. This paper presents a new approach and algorithm for solving a class of constrained Bi-Level Optimization (BLO) problems in which the lower-level problem involves constraints coupling both upper-level and lower-level variables. Such problems have recently gained significant attention due to their broad applicability in machine learning. However, conventional gradient-based methods unavoidably rely on computationally intensive calculations related to the Hessian matrix. To address this challenge, we begin by devising a smooth proximal Lagrangian value function to handle the constrained lower-level problem. Utilizing this construct, we introduce a single-level reformulation for constrained BLOs that transforms the original BLO problem into an equivalent optimization problem with smooth constraints. Enabled by this reformulation, we develop a Hessian-free gradient-based algorithm-termed proximal Lagrangian Value function-based Hessian-free Bi-level Algorithm (LV-HBA)-that is straightforward to implement in a single loop manner. Consequently, LV-HBA is especially well-suited for machine learning applications. Furthermore, we offer non-asymptotic convergence analysis for LV-HBA, eliminating the need for traditional strong convexity assumptions for the lower-level problem while also being capable of accommodating non-singleton scenarios. Empirical results substantiate the algorithm's superior practical performance.

The $\gamma$-ray emitting compact symmetric objects (CSOs) PKS 1718--649, NGC 3894, and TXS 0128+554 are lobe-dominated in the radio emission. In order to investigate their $\gamma$-ray radiation properties, we analyze the $\sim$14-yr Fermi/LAT observation data of the three CSOs. They all show the low luminosity ($10^{41}-10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$) and no significant variability in the $\gamma$-ray band. Their $\gamma$-ray average spectra can be well fitted by a power-law function. These properties of $\gamma$-rays are clearly different from the $\gamma$-ray emitting CSOs CTD 135 and PKS 1413+135, for which the $\gamma$-rays are produced by a restarted aligned jet. In the $L_{\gamma}-\Gamma_{\gamma}$ plane, the three CSOs are also located at the region occupied by radio galaxies (RGs) while CTD 135 and PKS 1413+135 display the similar feature to blazars. Together with the similar radio emission property to $\gamma$-ray emitting RGs Cen A and Fornax A, we speculate that the $\gamma$-rays of the three CSOs stem from their extended mini-lobes. The broadband spectral energy distributions of the three CSOs can be well explained by the two-zone leptonic model, where their $\gamma$-rays are produced by the inverse Compton process of the relativistic electrons in extended region. By extrapolating the observed Fermi/LAT spectra to the very high energy band, we find that TXS 0128+554 among the three CSOs may be detected by the Cherenkov Telescope Array in future., Comment: 19 Pages, 5 Figures, 4 Tables, Accepted by RAA
