2. Uncertainty Evaluation of Uranium Content Measurements by Redox Potential Titration Methods

Abstract

Uranium content measurement is very important to nuclear material accounting and product quality control in nuclear bulk facilities. It needs high accuracy and precision. In this work, 3 different measurement steps from 2 analytical standards GB 11841—1989 and ASTM C1267-17, which were uranium content test methods by iron(Ⅱ) reduction followed by chromium(Ⅵ) titration, were discussed by simulated experiments and following uncertainty evaluation. The results show that, the total uncertainties of the 3 steps are all lower than 0.1%, which is the international target value of uranium content measurement by redox potential titration method. The step for 2.3 g sample of GB 11841—1989 is more suitable to sign value measurement in reference material production, because of its lowest uncertainty. In routine testing works, the step for 0.20-0.25 g sample of GB 11841—1989 is better in sample weighting, the step of ASTM C1267-17 is better in titration and potassium dichromate solution preparation.

Abstract

Thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) is a well-established instrumental technique for accurately analyzing isotopes of elements with low first ionization potential. However, the measurement accuracy is affected due to the existence of the mass fractionation effect. Generally, applying the external standard method or total evaporation method is the most common way to correct the mass fractionation effect. Total evaporation (TE） technology is the most conventional method for uranium major isotope ratio measurement (235U/238U) using TIMS. However, due to the strong peak tailing of the major isotopes and other factors, the measurement precision and accuracy of minor isotope ratios (234U/238U and 236U/238U) are relatively low. In this study, the modified total evaporation (MTE) method for highly precise measurement of uranium isotopes ratios by TIMS was developed based on the research of dynamic heating procedures, dynamic and static receiving procedures, peak tailing correction, efficiency calibration of collectors and mass discrimination calibration. The accuracy and reliability of the MTE method were verified with different reference materials. The experiment results showed that the yield of uranium oxide should be monitored and the related parameters should be precisely controlled to reduce the yield of uranium oxidation during measurement. This action could guarantee the effectiveness of the MTE measurement and improve the uranium samples utilization. The initial strength of 187Re+ played an important role in the ionization efficiency of uranium and the yield of uranium oxide. The optimal signal of 187Re+ should be set in the range of 0.17-0.22 V. When uranium samples with 2% 235U isotopic abundance were measured by the MTE method using TIMS, the measurement precisions of 235U/238U, 234U/238U and 236U/238U were 0.024%, 0.06%, and 0.19%, and the bias between the measured value and reference value were 0.025%, 0.19%, and 0.38%, respectively. Compared to the TE method, the MTE method showed the same precision for the 235U/238U ratio measurement. As for the MTE measurement of 234U/238U and 236U/238U ratios, the major uranium isotopes (235U and 238U) were used as an internal standard to overcome the mass fractionation effect. When the tailing effects were eliminated, the measurement precisions of 234U/238U and 236U/238U ratios were improved by 5 to 10 times. As for sample amount, the TE method generally requires the uranium amount of less than 1 μg, while 5 μg is required for the MTE method.

Abstract

By the end of 2014, a cosmic ray muon telescope was installed at Zhongshan Station in Antarctic and has been continuously collecting data since then. It is the first surface muon telescope to be built in Antarctic. In June 2015, five CMEs were ejected towards the Earth initiating a big large Forbush decrease (FD) event. We conduct a comprehensive study of the galactic cosmic ray intensity fluctuations during the FD using the data from cosmic ray detectors of multiple stations (Zhongshan, McMurdo, South Polar and Nagoya) and he solar wind measurements from ACE and WIND. A pre-increase before the shock arrival was observed. Distinct differences exist in the timelines of the galactic cosmic ray recorded by the neutron monitors and the muon telescopes. FD onset for Zhongshan muon telescope is delayed (2.5h) with respect to SSC onset. This FD had a profile of four-step decrease. Abstract

The exceptional electron transfer properties and low thermal conductivity of two‐dimensional layered materials render them a promising choice for thermoelectric applications. In this study, we explore the stability, electronic properties, and thermoelectric characteristics of materials composed of two‐dimensionally layered transition metal nitride HfNF. Our research findings show that the structure of HfNF is stable and exhibits the properties of a direct bandgap semiconductor. Furthermore, we employ the Boltzmann transport theory and Slack model to investigate the thermoelectric properties of HfNF within the temperature range of 300 to 900 K. The HfNF materials exhibit relatively large thermoelectric dominance values (ZT$$ ZT $$ values), with the p$$ p $$‐type HfNF demonstrating a maximum ZT$$ ZT $$ value of 1.46. Furthermore, utilizing the quasi‐harmonic Debye model, thermodynamic properties such as heat capacity, coefficient of thermal expansion, and bulk modulus within the 6 GPa and 600 K range are estimated. Based on these calculations, it is predicted that two‐dimensional HfNF materials will serve as promising new materials for thermoelectric applications spanning from 300 to 900 K. Abstract

In this paper we report on the observations of TeV gamma ray sources performed by the air shower de- tector ARGO-YBJ. The objects studied in this work are the blazar Markarian 421 and the extended galactic source MGROJ1908+06, monitored during 2 years of operation. Mrk421 has been detected by ARGO-YBJ with a statisti- cal significance of 11 standard deviations. The observed TeV emission was highly variable, showing large enhance- ments of the flux during active periods. The study of the spectral behaviour during flares revealed a positive correla- tion of the hardness with the flux, as already reported in the past by the Whipple telescope, suggesting that this is a long term property of the source. ARGO-YBJ observed a strong correlation between TeV gamma rays and the X-ray flux measured by RXTM/ASM and SWIFT/BAT during the whole period, with a time lag compatible with zero, supporting the one-zone SSC model to describe the emission mechanism. MGROJ1908+06 has been detected by ARGO-YBJ with 5 standard deviation of significance. From our data the source appears extended and the measured extension is ext=0.48 +0.26 0.28 , in agreement with a previous HESS obser- vation. The average flux is in marginal agreement with that reported by MILAGRO, but significantly higher than that ob- tained by HESS, suggesting a possible flux variability. The large field of view ( 2 sr) and the high duty cycle allow a continuous monitoring of the sky in the declination band from 0 to 70 . In this paper we report on the ob- servations of two bright gamma ray sources, performed dur- ing 2 years: the blazar Mrk421 and the extended galactic source MGROJ1908+06.

""The ARGO-YBJ experiment is in stable data taking since November 2007 at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray. Laboratory (Tibet, P.R.China, 4300 m a.s.l.). It exploits a full coverage and high altitude approach to the. small air showers detection. The detector is made of a single layer of RPCs operated in streamer mode, fully. instrumenting a central carpet of about 5700 m2, then a guard ring extends the partially instrumented area to. about 11,000 m2. Abstract

Cosmic ray antiprotons provide an important probe for the study of cosmic-ray propagation in the interstellar space and to investigate the existence of Galactic dark matter. Cosmic rays are hampered by the Moon, therefore a deficit of cosmic rays in its direction is expected (the so-called Moon shadow). The Earth–Moon system acts as a magnetic spectrometer. In fact, due to the geomagnetic field the center of the Moon shifts westward by an amount depending on the primary cosmic ray energy. Paths of primary antiprotons are therefore deflected in an opposite sense in their way to the Earth. This effect allows, in principle, the search of antiparticles in the opposite direction of the observed Moon shadow. The ARGO-YBJ experiment, in stable data taking since November 2007 with an energy threshold of a few 100s of GeV, is observing the Moon shadow with high statistical significance. Using about 1 year data, an upper limit of the p ¯ / p flux ratio in the few-TeV energy region is set to a few percent with a confidence level of 90%.
