2. Physical activity : benefits, barriers, and modification in adults in their eighth and ninth decades

Abstract

Participation in regular physical activity has long been linked to improved cardiovascular health, reduced risk of developing metabolic syndrome and improved mental well-being. More recently, the musculoskeletal benefits derived from weight bearing physical activity (WBPA) have been acknowledged in the latest update of the UK Chief Medical Officers' PA Guidelines. However, few studies have considered a lifecourse approach to relationships between WBPA and musculoskeletal health. Furthermore, the percentage of community dwelling older adults remaining sufficiently active remains low, with few studies considering how this figure may be improved. In this thesis, previously collected data from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study (HCS) were used to analyse the relationship between lifetime participation of WBPA and its relationship with bone mineral density, fat and lean mass and grip strength outcomes in later life. This was followed by a thematic analysis of previously collected qualitative data from a focus group study sited in HCS to understand the barriers and facilitators influencing community dwelling older adults in physical activity participation. These findings informed the construction of a pilot study trialling a participant-led behavioural approach, Healthy Conversation Skills, to improve WBPA, in HCS. The findings from this thesis add to our current understanding of factors affecting older adults' participation in physical activity, in the UK. Positive relationships between WBPA and BMD are reported in women in later life; in qualitative work two key modifiable elements are highlighted: psychological and social engagement as influential factors in affecting the outcome of physical activity level. A pilot study that trialled Healthy Conversation Skills in older adults supports the feasibility of using such an approach in an older adult cohort. A larger trial is now warranted to investigate the efficacy of Healthy Conversation Skills in promoting physical activity in community dwelling older adults.

Abstract

Green data centers have become more and more popular recently due to their sustainability. The resource management module within a green data center, which is in charge of dispatching jobs and scheduling energy, becomes especially critical as it directly affects a center's profit and sustainability. The thrust of managing a green data center's machine and energy resources lies at the uncertainty of incoming job requests and future showing-up green energy supplies. Thus, the decision of scheduling resources has to be made in an online manner. Some heuristic deterministic online algorithms have been proposed in recent literature. In this paper, we consider online algorithms for green data centers and introduce a randomized solution with the objective of maximizing net profit. Competitive analysis is employed to measure online algorithms' theoretical performance. Our algorithm is theoretical-sound and it outperforms the previously known deterministic algorithms in many settings using real traces. 13. On Time-Sensitive Revenue Management and Energy Scheduling in Green Data Centers

Abstract

In this paper, we design an analytically and experimentally better online energy and job scheduling algorithm with the objective of maximizing net profit for a service provider in green data centers. We first study the previously known algorithms and conclude that these online algorithms have provable poor performance against their worst-case scenarios. To guarantee an online algorithm's performance in hindsight, we design a randomized algorithm to schedule energy and jobs in the data centers and prove the algorithm's expected competitive ratio in various settings. Our algorithm is theoretical-sound and it outperforms the previously known algorithms in many settings using both real traces and simulated data. An optimal offline algorithm is also implemented as an empirical benchmark.

Abstract

While there are many known health benefits to maintained physical activity levels in late adulthood, there have been very few studies that have considered relationships between morbidity profile and physical activity in the eighth decade of life. We studied 1097 participants, 555 men and 542 women from the Hertfordshire Cohort Study, a UK community based sample. Validated questionnaire based data were used to relate self-reported physical activity (PA) levels to medical history, and medication use. Regression analyses were adjusted for age, BMI, smoker status, alcohol consumption. The mean (SD) age of participants in the study was 80.2 (2.7) years for men and 80.2 (2.6) for women. A higher proportion of men (33.7 %) than women (24 %) were in the high activity score group. 20.8 % of female participants and 22.6 % male participants reported having no comorbid disease; 10.5 % men and 8.4 % women were taking no medication. Abstract

The current article presents a descriptive analysis of marketplace data from an online freelance platform in the early months of COVID-19. We investigate changes in the behavioral patterns of buyers and sellers on the platform to study consumer coping responses during the pandemic. We draw from the literature on coping with loss and personal adversity to present a consumer pandemic coping model derived from a synthesis of existing stage theories of coping and adaptation. The model presented can explain the aggregate changes in marketplace activity (e.g., traffic, sentiment, adoption, transaction patterns) we observe during the first several months of the pandemic. Our findings suggest that temporal coping processes can drive market behavior. This article provides insights about consumer coping to researchers and policy makers, as well as to firms who aim to be more prepared in the face of future crises. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
