As people’s consumption levels and health awareness have risen, the consumer demand for functional foods is steadily increasing. Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs), an important class of dietary fatty acids, have been regarded as high-value functional foods due to their unique transportation system and the fact that they can be metabolized rapidly in the body while producing high energy. Beginning with an overview of the types and structures of MCFAs, this paper goes on to elaborate the metabolic pathway of MCFAs in the human body and then summarize recent research on MCFAs in the adjuvant treatment of different diseases. This article focuses on the positive role of MCFAs in the adjuvant treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, cancer, diabetes, obesity, and other diseases, and expounds their action mechanism. Finally, an outlook on the future development of MCFAs is given. Overall, this review provides a theoretical basis for promoting the application of MCFAs in the fields of food and medicine.

The Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) is a technology that has successfully addressed power quality issues. In this paper, a photovoltaic system with battery storage powered Unified Power Quality Conditioner is presented. Total harmonic distortion of the grid current during extreme voltage sag and swell conditions is more than 5% when UPQC is controlled with synchronous reference frame theory (SRF) and instantaneous reactive power theory (PQ) control. The shunt active filter of the UPQC is controlled by the artificial neural network to overcome the above problem. The proposed artificial neural network controller helps to simplify the control complexity and mitigate power quality issues effectively. This study aims to use a neural network to control a shunt active filter of the UPQC to maximise the supply of active power loads and grid and also used to mitigate the harmonic problem due to non-linear loads in the grid. The performance of the model is tested under various case scenarios, including non-linear load conditions, unbalanced load conditions, and voltage sag and voltage swell conditions. The simulations were performed in MATLAB/Simulink software. The results showed excellent performance of the proposed approach and were compared with PQ and SRF control. The percent total harmonic distortion (%THD) of the grid current was measured and discussed for all cases. The results show that the %THD is within the acceptable limits of IEEE-519 (less than 5%) in all test case scenarios by the proposed controller.

Lycium barbarum seed meal contains a variety of bioactive compounds, but the use of L. barbarum seed meal in the food industry is rare. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of reducing sugars on the structural and flavor properties of the Maillard reaction products (MRPs) of the Lycium barbarum seed meal hydrolysate (LSH). The results showed that the flavors and tastes of the MRPs were affected by reducing sugars. In comparison to oligosaccharides, monosaccharides were more suitable for the development of MRPs with good sensory qualities. The structural characteristics of L. barbarum seed meal precursor MRPs were also affected by reducing sugars. The MRPs produced with the participation of monosaccharides had higher ultraviolet absorption and browning than the MRPs produced with oligosaccharides. The molecular weights of the MRPs were found to be 128–500 Da and 500–1000 Da. Compared to the MRPs made from other sugars, xylose-meridian products (X-MRPs) had a stronger meaty flavor. The mellowness and continuity of the MRPs made from monosaccharides were superior to those made from oligosaccharides. The MRPs formed by L. barbarum seed meal exhibited the characteristics of umami and meat flavor. MRPs with better flavors may be used to develop new types of seasoning salts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Liver cancr is a heterogeneous disease in terms of etiology, biologic and clinical behavior. Very little is known about how many genes concur at the molecular level of tumor development, progression and aggressiveness. To explore the key genes involved in the development of liver cancer, we established a rat model induced by diethylnitrosamine to investigate the gene expression profiles of liver tissues during the transition to cirrhosis and carcinoma. Methods A rat model of liver cancer induced by diethylnitrosamine was established. The cirrhotic tissue, the dysplasia nodules, the early cancerous nodules and the cancerous nodules from the rats with lung metastasis were chosen to compare with liver tissue of normal rats to investigate the differential expression genes between them. Affymetrix GeneChip Rat 230 2.0 arrays were used throughout. The real-time quantity PCR was used to verify the expression of some differential expression genes in tissues. Results The pathological changes that occurred in the livers of diethylnitrosamine-treated rats included non-specific injury, fibrosis and cirrhosis, dysplastic nodules, early cancerous nodules and metastasis. There are 349 upregulated and 345 downregulated genes sharing among the above chosen tissues when compared with liver tissue of normal rats. The deregulated genes play various roles in diverse processes such as metabolism, transport, cell proliferation, apoptosis, cell adhesion, angiogenesis and so on. Among which, 41 upregulated and 27 downregulated genes are associated with inflammatory response, immune response and oxidative stress. Twenty-four genes associated with glutathione metabolism majorly participating oxidative stress were deregulated in the development of liver cancer. There were 19 members belong to CYP450 family downregulated, except CYP2C40 upregulated. Conclusion In this study, we provide the global gene expression profiles during the development and progression of liver cancer in rats. The data obtained from the gene expression profiles will allow us to acquire insights into the molecular mechanisms of hepatocarcinogenesis and identify specific genes (or gene products) that can be used for early molecular diagnosis, risk analysis, prognosis prediction, and development of new therapies.

Objectives: A novel tp0548 sequence-type was identified in one clinical isolate (X-4) from a patient diagnosed with primary syphilis in Xiamen, China. To precisely define and characterise a new clinical isolate, we performed further genome-scale molecular analysis.Methods: The pooled segment genome sequencing method followed by Illumina sequencing was performed.Results: This novel sequence-type contained a unique nucleotide substitution 'T' at position 167 and belonged to the SS14-like clade of TPA strains, as determined by phylogenetic analysis. Multi-locus sequence analysis of nine chromosomal loci demonstrated that the X-4 isolate was clustered within a monophyletic group of TPA strains. Whole-genome phylogenetic analysis subsequently corroborated the TPA strain classification of the X-4 isolate and revealed that the isolate was closely related to the SS14 strain, with 42 single-nucleotide variations and 12 insertions/deletions. In addition, high intrastrain heterogeneity in the length of the poly G/C tracts was found in the TPAChi_0347 locus, which might indicate that this gene of the X-4 isolate is likely involved in phase variation events. The length heterogeneity of the poly A/T tracts was lower than the genetic variability of the poly G/C tracts, and all the observed intrastrain variations fell within coding regions.Conclusion: The novel tp0548 sequence-type was determined to belong to a new TPA isolate, X-4. The identification of variable length in homopolymetic tracts (G/C and A/T) could provide a snapshot of the genes that potentially involved in genotype-phenotype variations.
