Direct synthesis of CH3 COOH from CH4 and CO2 is an appealing approach for the utilization of two potent greenhouse gases that are notoriously difficult to activate. In this Communication, we report an integrated route to enable this reaction. Recognizing the thermodynamic stability of CO2 , our strategy sought to first activate CO2 to produce CO (through electrochemical CO2 reduction) and O2 (through water oxidation), followed by oxidative CH4 carbonylation catalyzed by Rh single atom catalysts supported on zeolite. The net result was CH4 carboxylation with 100 % atom economy. CH3 COOH was obtained at a high selectivity (>80 %) and good yield (ca. 3.2 mmol g-1 cat in 3 h). Isotope labelling experiments confirmed that CH3 COOH is produced through the coupling of CH4 and CO2 . This work represents the first successful integration of CO/O2 production with oxidative carbonylation reaction. The result is expected to inspire more carboxylation reactions utilizing preactivated CO2 that take advantage of both products from the reduction and oxidation processes, thus achieving high atom efficiency in the synthesis.

Atomically dispersed catalysts such as single-atom catalysts have been shown to be effective in selectively oxidizing methane, promising a direct synthetic route to value-added oxygenates such as acetic acid or methanol. However, an important challenge of this approach has been that the loading of active sites by single-atom catalysts is low, leading to a low overall yield of the products. Here, we report an approach that can address this issue. It utilizes a metal-organic framework built with porphyrin as the linker, which provides high concentrations of binding sites to support atomically dispersed rhodium. It is shown that up to 5 wt% rhodium loading can be achieved with excellent dispersity. When used for acetic acid synthesis by methane oxidation, a new benchmark performance of 23.62 mmol·gcat-1·h-1 was measured. Furthermore, the catalyst exhibits a unique sensitivity to light, producing acetic acid (under illumination, up to 66.4% selectivity) or methanol (in the dark, up to 65.0% selectivity) under otherwise identical reaction conditions.

Triclosan (TCS) is a widespread antimicrobial agent that is associated with many adverse health outcomes. Its gut toxicity has been attributed to the molecular modifications mediated by commensal microbes, but microbial transformations of TCS derivatives in the gut lumen are still largely unknown. Aromatic hydroxylation is the predominant oxidative metabolism of TCS that linked to its toxicological effects in host tissues. Here, we aimed to reveal the biological fates of hydroxyl-TCS (OH-TCS) in the colon, where intestinal microbes mainly reside. Unlike the profiles generated via host metabolism, OH-TCS species remain unconjugated in human stools from a cohort study. Through tracking molecular compositions in mouse intestinal tract, elevated abundance of free-form OH-TCS while reduced abundance of conjugated forms was observed in the colon digesta and mucosa. Using antibiotic-treated and germ-free mice, as well as in vitro approaches, we demonstrate that gut microbiota-encoded enzymes efficiently convert glucuronide/sulfate-conjugated OH-TCS, which are generated from host metabolism, back to their bioactive free-forms in colon tissues. Thus, host-gut microbiota metabolic interactions of TCS derivatives were proposed. These results shed light on the crucial roles of microbial metabolism in TCS toxicity, and highlight the importance of incorporating gut microbial transformations in health risk assessment of environmental chemicals.

Emerging research supports that triclosan (TCS), an antimicrobial agent found in thousands of consumer products, exacerbates colitis and colitis-associated colorectal tumorigenesis in animal models. While the intestinal toxicities of TCS require the presence of gut microbiota, the molecular mechanisms involved have not been defined. Here we show that intestinal commensal microbes mediate metabolic activation of TCS in the colon and drive its gut toxicology. Using a range of in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo approaches, we identify specific microbial β-glucuronidase (GUS) enzymes involved and pinpoint molecular motifs required to metabolically activate TCS in the gut. Finally, we show that targeted inhibition of bacterial GUS enzymes abolishes the colitis-promoting effects of TCS, supporting an essential role of specific microbial proteins in TCS toxicity. Together, our results define a mechanism by which intestinal microbes contribute to the metabolic activation and gut toxicity of TCS, and highlight the importance of considering the contributions of the gut microbiota in evaluating the toxic potential of environmental chemicals.

Ultrathin amorphous silica membranes with embedded organic molecular wires (oligo(p-phenylenevinylene), three aryl units) provide chemical separation of incompatible catalytic environments of CO2 reduction and H2O oxidation while maintaining electronic and protonic coupling between them. For an efficient nanoscale artificial photosystem, important performance criteria are high rate and directionality of charge flow. Here, the visible-light-induced charge flow from an anchored Ru bipyridyl light absorber across the silica nanomembrane to Co3O4 water oxidation catalyst is quantitatively evaluated by photocurrent measurements. Charge transfer rates increase linearly with wire density, with 5 nm-2 identified as an optimal target. Accurate measurement of wire and light absorber densities is accomplished by the polarized FT-IRRAS method. Guided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, four wire derivatives featuring electron-donating (methoxy) and -withdrawing groups (sulfonate, perfluorophenyl) with highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) potentials ranging from 1.48 to 0.64 V vs NHE were synthesized and photocurrents evaluated. Charge transfer rates increase sharply with increasing driving force for hole transfer from the excited light absorber to the embedded wire, followed by a decrease as the HOMO potential of the wire moves beyond the Co3O4 valence band level toward more negative values, pointing to an optimal wire HOMO potential around 1.3 V vs NHE. Comparison with photocurrents of samples without nanomembrane indicates that silica layers with optimized wires are able to approach undiminished electron flux at typical solar intensities. Combined with the established high proton conductivity and small-molecule blocking property, the charge transfer measurements demonstrate that oxidation and reduction catalysis can be efficiently integrated on the nanoscale under separation by an ultrathin silica membrane.

Litchi exhibits a large number of flowers, many flowering batches, and an inconsistent ratio of male and female flowers, frequently leading to a low fruit-setting rate. Floral sexual differentiation is a crucial phase in perennial trees to ensure optimal fruit production. However, the mechanism behind floral differentiation remains unclear. The objective of the study was to identify the role of auxin in floral differentiation at the transcriptional level. The results showed that the ratio of female flowers treated with naphthalene acetic acid (NAA) was significantly lower than that of the control stage (M0/F0). The levels of endogenous auxin and auxin metabolites were measured in male and female flowers at different stages of development. It was found that the levels of IAA, IAA-Glu, IAA-Asp, and IAA-Ala were significantly higher in male flowers compared to female flowers. Next-generation sequencing and modeling were employed to perform an in-depth transcriptome analysis on all flower buds in litchi 'Feizixiao' cultivars (Litchi chinensis Sonn.). Plant hormones were found to exert a significant impact on the litchi flowering process and flower proliferation. Specifically, a majority of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to the auxin pathway were noticeably increased during male flower bud differentiation. The current findings will enhance our comprehension of the process and control mechanism of litchi floral sexual differentiation. It also offers a theoretical foundation for implementing strategies to regulate flowering and enhance fruit production in litchi cultivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During the ripening of litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) fruit, anthocyanin biosynthesis is crucial in providing vibrant coloring. Previous studies on anthocyanin-related transcription factors have made significant discoveries relating to plants. However, the role of the SQUAMOSA promoter-binding protein-like (SPL) transcription factors in anthocyanin biosynthesis has rarely been studied in litchi. SPL genes are widely involved in the developmental mechanisms of plants. In this study, a total of 17 SPL genes have been identified from the litchi genome. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that these genes were divided into eight groups (Group I-VIII). Analysis of gene structure conserved domains, conserved motifs, and miR156 target prediction showed that LcSPLs were highly conserved during evolution. RNA-seq analysis of litchi revealed that six LcSPL genes have a role in regulating anthocyanin biosynthesis. Further, weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA) revealed LcSPL7's role in anthocyanin synthesis and chlorophyll degradation in litchi fruit ripening. These findings collectively suggest that the LcSPL gene family plays an essential role in anthocyanin biosynthesis in litchi pericarp. In summary, comprehensive bioinformatics analysis of the SPL family expands our understanding of anthocyanin synthesis in litchi pericarp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
