Abstract

The study selected 1-methyl-naphthalene as a surrogate for aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) found in tropospheric aerosols. It determined mass accommodation coefficients (alpha) on 1-methylnaphthalene as a function of temperature for gas-phase m-xylene, ethylbenzene, butylbenzene, alpha-pinene, gamma-terpinene, p-cymene, and 2-methyl-2-hexanol.

Abstract

The energetics of the Ti[O.sub.2] polymorphs (rutile, anatase, and brookite) were studied by high temperature oxide melt drop solution calorimetry. Relative to bulk rutile, bulk brookite is 0.71 [+ or -] 0.38 kJ/mol (6) and bulk anatase is 2.61 [+ or -] 0.41 kJ/mol higher in enthalpy. The surface enthalpies of rutile, brookite, and anatase are 2.2 [+ or -] 0.2 J/[m.sup.2], 1.0 [+ or -] 0.2 J/[m.sup.2], and 0.4 [+ or -] 0.1 J/[m.sup.2], respectively. The closely balanced energetics directly confirm the crossover in stability of nanophase polymorphs inferred by Zhang and Banfield (7). An amorphous sample with surface area of 34,600 [m.sup.2]/mol is 24.25 [+ or -] 0.88 kJ/mol higher in enthalpy than bulk rutile.

38. Effect of adsorbates on field-electron emission from ZnO nanoneedle arrays.

Abstract

We studied the influence of adsorbates on field emission (FE) properties of well-aligned ZnO nanoneedle arrays with varying initial electric field, vacuum gap, and ambient pressure. The FE current exhibits hysteresis upon a loop of applied voltage. On applying an initial electric field of 3.85×106 V/m, the turn-on voltage increases ∼50%, Fowler-Nordheim plots show better linearity, as well as the hysteretic behavior can be annihilated. It is found that the FE current depends on the vacuum gap and the ambient pressure. The FE current increased sensitively with increasing the ambient pressure P when P<∼7×10-5 Pa, and it saturates in the pressure range of 7×10-5–3×10-4 Pa above which the FE current drops. The phenomena can be explained by the adsorbate effects. The adsorbate states modify the effective work function of the samples, and two emission regimes, adsorption-controlled and desorption-controlled processes, were proposed. Our results are useful for practical applications as the I–V characteristics can be affected by environmental parameters, especially the ambient pressure. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Contains fulltext : 168191.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) The Koolen-de Vries syndrome (KdVS; OMIM #610443), also known as the 17q21.31 microdeletion syndrome, is a clinically heterogeneous disorder characterised by (neonatal) hypotonia, developmental delay, moderate intellectual disability, and characteristic facial dysmorphism. Expressive language development is particularly impaired compared with receptive language or motor skills. Other frequently reported features include social and friendly behaviour, epilepsy, musculoskeletal anomalies, congenital heart defects, urogenital malformations, and ectodermal anomalies. The syndrome is caused by a truncating variant in the KAT8 regulatory NSL complex unit 1 (KANSL1) gene or by a 17q21.31 microdeletion encompassing KANSL1. Herein we describe a novel cohort of 45 individuals with KdVS of whom 33 have a 17q21.31 microdeletion and 12 a single-nucleotide variant (SNV) in KANSL1 (19 males, 26 females; age range 7 months to 50 years). We provide guidance about the potential pitfalls in the laboratory testing and emphasise the challenges of KANSL1 variant calling and DNA copy number analysis in the complex 17q21.31 region. Moreover, we present detailed phenotypic information, including neuropsychological features, that contribute to the broad phenotypic spectrum of the syndrome. Comparison of the phenotype of both the microdeletion and SNV patients does not show differences of clinical importance, stressing that haploinsufficiency of KANSL1 is sufficient to cause the full KdVS phenotype.

Abstract

Two-dimensional (2D) periodic domain-inverted structures in lithium niobate (LiNbO3) have been fabricated by direct electron beam lithography at room temperature without any static bias. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) demonstrates the domain inversion occurred across the whole thickness of the crystal, indicating the use of the structures for a range of 2D and potential 3D nonlinear photonic crystals.
