Abstract

Magnesium alloy is widely used in the aerospace field due to its low density，high specific strength，high damping and good thermal conductivity. However，its low elastic modulus limits its reliable application in large thin-walled components. Aiming at the problem to improve the modulus properties of magnesium-based materials，this paper briefly introduces the main factors affecting the modulus of the alloy，compares the advantages，disadvantages and application scope of relevant calculation models such as equal stress-strain model，rule of mixture，Halpin-Tsai model and two-phase composite model，summarizes the current situation and progress of the research on the modulus properties of magnesium-based materials，and reviews the two major ways of modulus improvement of magnesium-based materials and the mechanism of performance improvement. Based on the integrated computational material engineering，the integrated development strategy of high-strength and high-modulus magnesium-based materials for atomic-lattice scale analogy high-modulus aluminum alloy development and machine learning assisted optimization experimental design is proposed.

Abstract

Background: Due to inconsistent positioning, tumor shrinking, and weight loss during fractionated treatment, the initial plan was no longer appropriate after a few fractional treatments, and the patient will require adaptive helical tomotherapy (HT) to overcome the issue. Patients are scanned with megavoltage computed tomography (MVCT) before each fractional treatment, which is utilized for patient setup and provides information for dose reconstruction. However, the low contrast and high noise of MVCT make it challenging to delineate treatment targets and organs at risk (OAR). Purpose: This study developed a deep‐learning‐based approach to generate high‐quality synthetic kilovoltage computed tomography (skVCT) from MVCT and meet clinical dose requirements. Methods: Data from 41 head and neck cancer patients were collected; 25 (2995 slices) were used for training, and 16 (1898 slices) for testing. A cycle generative adversarial network (cycleGAN) based on attention gate and residual blocks was used to generate MVCT‐based skVCT. For the 16 patients, kVCT‐based plans were transferred to skVCT images and electron density profile‐corrected MVCT images to recalculate the dose. The quantitative indices and clinically relevant dosimetric metrics, including the mean absolute error (MAE), structural similarity index measure (SSIM), peak signal‐to‐noise ratio (PSNR), gamma passing rates, and dose‐volume‐histogram (DVH) parameters (Dmax, Dmean, Dmin), were used to assess the skVCT images. Results: The MAE, PSNR, and SSIM of MVCT were 109.6 ± 12.3 HU, 27.5 ± 1.1 dB, and 91.9% ± 1.7%, respectively, while those of skVCT were 60.6 ± 9.0 HU, 34.0 ± 1.9 dB, and 96.5% ± 1.1%. The image quality and contrast were enhanced, and the noise was reduced. The gamma passing rates improved from 98.31% ± 1.11% to 99.71% ± 0.20% (2 mm/2%) and 99.77% ± 0.18% to 99.98% ± 0.02% (3 mm/3%). No significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed in DVH parameters between kVCT and skVCT. Conclusion: With training on a small data set (2995 slices), the model successfully generated skVCT with improved image quality, and the dose calculation accuracy was similar to that of MVCT. Abstract

Surface topography is one of the important factors that influence tribological performance, for instance friction, lubrication, and wear. Moreover the functional features of the surface topography, such as peaks/pits and scratches, play an especially important role in the analysis and simulation of these tribological properties. In this study, a method was developed to simultaneously extract the peaks/pits and scratches as two separate surfaces from one measured surface topography scan. This technique was based on the morphological component analysis. A honed stainless steel surface, a lapped cemented carbide surface, and a lapped graphite surface were measured to verify the proposed method. The results showed that the peaks/pits and scratches could be separated and extracted from the measured surfaces.

Abstract

Two types of commercial WC-Ni samples were irradiated with the High-intensity pulsed ion beam (HIPIB). Both the surface characteristics and tribo-characteristics of the non-irradiated and irradiated WC-Ni samples, sliding against graphite under water lubrication, were compared. Quite low steady friction coefficients (approximately of 0.02) of the irradiated WC-Ni were observed. The surface topographies and components were investigated. The quite low friction of the irradiated WC-Ni samples was ascribed to the higher fluid retention capability of the latter and the tribofilm formed during sliding.

Abstract

Wear of hard materials in contact with softer materials is a neglected area of research. However, we observed considerable wear phenomenon at a hard WC-Ni surface sliding over soft graphite under water lubrication. The influences of applied load and the application history on the wear of surface were addressed in our experimental design. Wear of both graphite and WC-Ni surfaces increased with a greater applied load and repeated sliding. The topographies of the worn surfaces showed clear micro-scratches on the hard WC-Ni surface. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses revealed that the abrasive wear of the WC-Ni surface could be attributed to hard WC particles embedded in the graphite surface. These hard particles were formed by shearing of sharp WC-Ni asperities under certain conditions and intrinsic defects of the WC-Ni surface could accelerate this wear process.
