14. Acute effects of ambient nitrogen oxides and interactions with temperature on cardiovascular mortality in Shenzhen, China

Abstract

Background: Though inconsistent, acute effects of ambient nitrogen oxides on cardiovascular mortality have been reported. Whereas, interactive roles of temperature on their relationships and joint effects of different indicators of nitrogen oxides were less studied. This study aimed to extrapolate the independent roles of ambient nitrogen oxides and temperature interactions on cardiovascular mortality.Methods: Data on mortality, air pollutants, and meteorological factors in Shenzhen from 2013 to 2019 were collected. Three indicators including nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOX) were studied. Adjusted generalized additive models (GAMs) were applied to analyse their associations with cardiovascular mortality in different groups.Results: The average daily concentrations of NO, NO2, and NOX were 11.7 mu g/m(3), 30.7 mu g/m(3), and 53.2 mu g/m(3), respectively. Significant associations were shown with each indicator. Cumulative effects of nitrogen oxides were more obvious than distributed lag effects. Males, population under 65 years old, and population with stroke related condition were more susceptible to nitrogen oxides. Adverse effects of nitrogen oxides were more significant at low temperature. Impacts of NO2 on cardiovascular mortality, and NO on stroke mortality were the most robust in the multi-pollutant models, whereas variations were shown in the other relationships.Conclusions: Low levels of nitrogen oxides showed acute and adverse impacts and the interactive roles of temperature on cardiovascular mortality. Cumulative effects were most significant and joint effects of nitrogen oxides required more attention. Population under 65 years old and population with stroke-related health condition were susceptible, especially days at lower temperature.

Abstract

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the effects of a carbohydrate (CHO; lotus-root starch) predominant, late-evening snack (LES), containing 200 kcal (50g CHO) on fasting resting energy expenditure (REE) and nutrient oxidation in hospitalized adults with acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). SUBJECTS/METHODS: Adults with ACLF were randomized to receive daily LES (treatment; n = 35) or standard care (n = 35; non-supplemented control) for 14 days. REE and respiratory quotient (RQ) were measured by indirect calorimetry, nutrient oxidation (CHO, protein and fat), intake and biochemical parameters were measured in both groups at baseline and after 14 days using validated techniques. Disease severity was measured using the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD). RESULTS: No significant differences in macronutrient intake, anthropometric, demographic characteristics or MELD scores were observed between groups at baseline (P > 0.05). Fasting RQ was significantly higher in the LES supplemented verses the control group after 2 weeks (P = 0.02). CHO oxidation was significantly higher (P = 0.001) and fat oxidation (P = 0.02) was lower in the LES-supplemented group when compared with controls after 2 weeks. Fasting RQ and REE in the LES-supplemented group increased significantly (0.83 verses 0.88; P = 0.007/1301 ± 409 vs 1687 ± 718 kcal/day; P = 0.02) in patients with MELD scores ≤ 30 when compared with patients with MELD scores > 30 (0.82 verses 0.84; P = 0.27/ 1361 ± 405 vs 1437 ± 429 kcal/day; P = 0.67) after supplementation. CONCLUSIONS: A carbohydrate-predominant LES is associated with increases in fasting carbohydrate oxidation, REE and reductions in fat oxidation in adults with ACLF. Therapeutic strategies utilizing LES may promote improved nutritional status in adults with ACLF. Abstract

A search for a time-varying ν¯e signal was performed with 621 days of data acquired by the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment over 704 calendar days. The time spectrum of the measured ν¯e flux normalized to its prediction was analyzed with a Lomb-Scargle periodogram, which yielded no significant\ud signal for periods ranging from 2 hours to nearly 2 years. The normalized time spectrum was also fit for a sidereal modulation under the Standard Model Extension (SME) framework to search for Lorentz and CPT violation (LV-CPTV). Limits were obtained for all six flavor pairs e¯μ¯; e¯τ¯, μ¯τ¯, e¯e;¯ μ¯μ¯ and τ¯τ¯ by fitting them one at a time, constituting the first experimental constraints on the latter three. Daya Bay’s high statistics and unique layout of multiple directions from three pairs of reactors to three experimental halls allowed the simultaneous constraint of individual SME LV-CPTV coefficients without assuming others contribute negligibly, a first for a neutrino experiment.

Abstract

An industrial magnetic separator with 0.5 m warm bore, 1 m effective length, 3.5T central field superconducting magnet system, a high gradient reciprocating canister and corresponding slurry and control systems for kaolin clay purification has been constructed. Laboratory tests at different magnetic fields (1-3.5T) and slurry velocities (0.5-3cm/s) have been conducted. The results show the stable operation and the productivity of 3 t/h dry clay powder with 3.5-5 points brightness enhancement.

Abstract

In current work, EA in multivariable linear systems via output feedback is investigated. A small unmanned aerial vehicle is developed for the study. The longitudinal control system is design based on Feedforward Gain (FG) and Error Integration (EI) control scheme of EA. The full Six-Degreeof-Freedom (6DOF) nonlinear simulation and actual flight testing are also presented in this paper. Simulation and flight testing results show that the satisfactory control performance is obtained with the two control schemes, while achieving all of the design requirements.

Abstract

1. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of aminoglycoside resistance and the prevalence of 6 important modifying enzyme genes, i.e. (strA, strB, aph(3 ′)-IIa, aac(3)-IIa, aac(6 ′)-Ibandant(3 ″)-Ia), inEscherichia colistrains in broilers with septicaemia in Hebei, China. 2. A total of 111 clinical isolates ofE. coliwere collected from 46 large-scale farms. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests, using the Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion method, were performed on all 111 isolates. In addition, all were screened for the presence of modifying enzyme genes using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). 3. The results show that the rates of resistance were as follows: streptomycin: 97.3%, kanamycin: 97.0%, gentamicin: 95.5%, neomycin: 50.5%, amikacin: 46.0%, spectinomycin: 22.5%. Of the genes examined,strB(73.9%) was the most frequently identified gene in the phenotypic resistant isolates, followed in order by:ant(3 ″)-Ia, aac(3)-IIa, aac(6 ′)-Ib, aph(3 ′)-IIa and strA. 4. It is concluded that aminoglycoside resistance inE. colifrom broilers with septicaemia remains a serious problem in Hebei, China. This emphasises the need to ban the non-therapeutic use of antibiotics, discourage their misuse and to be continually vigilant by providing appropriate scientific and technological support for the poultry industry.
