Abstract

We report a clear transition through a reconnection layer at the low-latitude magnetopause which shows a complete traversal across all reconnected field lines during northwestward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions. The associated plasma populations confirm details of the electron and ion mixing and the time history and acceleration through the current layer. This case has low magnetic shear with a strong guide field and the reconnection layer contains a single density depletion layer on the magnetosheath side which we suggest results from nearly field-aligned magnetosheath flows. Within the reconnection boundary layer, there are two plasma boundaries, close to the inferred separatrices on the magnetosphere and magnetosheath sides (Ssp and Ssh) and two boundaries associated with the Alfvén waves (or Rotational Discontinuities, RDsp and RDsh). The data are consistent with these being launched from the reconnection site and the plasma distributions are well ordered and suggestive of the time elapsed since reconnection of the field lines observed. In each sub-layer between the boundaries the plasma distribution is different and is centered around the current sheet, responsible for magnetosheath acceleration. We show evidence for a velocity dispersion effect in the electron anisotropy that is consistent with the time elapsed since reconnection. In addition, new evidence is presented for the occurrence of partial reflection of magnetosheath electrons at the magnetopause current layer.

Abstract

On the basis of successful research into new metal-aluminium nitride (M-AlN) cermet solar selective coatings, a commercial-scale cylindrical direct current (dc) magnetron sputter coater has been developed for the deposition of these cermet solar coatings onto batches of tubes. The coater vacuum chamber has a diameter of 0.8 m and is 1.8 m in height. 32 glass tubes may be accommodated in the chamber. Stainless steel-aluminium nitride (SS-AlN) cermet material has been investigated as a solar absorbing layer. Three cylindrical post cathodes, consisting of stainless steel, aluminium and copper tubes, are installed in the chamber. During the deposition of an SS-AlN cermet layer, both the Al and SS targets are sputtered simultaneously in the gas mixture of argon and nitrogen. The nitrogen partial pressure is set sufficiently high at the aluminium target side to ensure that a nearly pure AlN ceramic sublayer is deposited by dc reactive sputtering. The planetary rotation of the 32 tubes results in a multi-layered system consisting of alternating SS and AlN sublayers. This multi-sublayer system can be considered as a macro-homogeneous cermet layer. Varying SS target current achieves different SS volume fractions in the cermet layers. A solar absorptance of 0.94-0.95 and emittance of 0.04-0.05 at room temperature has been achieved for the SS-AlN cermet solar coatings. These solar tubes are stable at 330-400 [degrees] C. Using this commercial-scale coater, it should be possible to produce solar tubes stable at even higher temperatures (450-550 [degrees] C), based on a high melting point transition metal aluminium nitride cermet.

11. Polar cap hot patches: enhanced density structures different from the classical patches in the ionosphere

Abstract

Based on in situ and ground‐based observations, a new type of “polar cap hot patch” has been identified that is different from the classical polar cap enhanced density structure (cold patches). Comparing with the classical polar cap patches, which are transported from the dayside sunlit region with dense and cold plasma, the polar cap hot patches are associated with particle precipitations (therefore field‐aligned currents), ion upflows, and flow shears. The hot patches may have the same order of density enhancement as classical patches in the topside ionosphere, suggesting that the hot patches may be produced by transported photoionization plasma into flow channels. Within the flow channels, the hot patches have low‐energy particle precipitation and/or ion upflows associated with field‐aligned currents and flow shears. Corresponding Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signal scintillation measurements indicate that hot patches may produce slightly stronger radio signal scintillation in the polar cap region than classical patches. A new type of polar cap patches, “polar cap hot patches,” is identified to differentiate enhanced density structures from classical patches. Hot patches are associated with particle precipitations, ion upflows, field‐aligned currents, and shear flows in the polar cap. Hot patches may lead to slightly stronger ionospheric scintillations of GNSS signals in the polar cap region than classical patches. © 2017 American Geophysical Union

Abstract

Tracking the formation and full evolution of polar cap ionization patches in the polar ionosphere, we directly observe the full Dungey convection cycle for southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions. This enables us to study how the Dungey cycle influences the patches’ evolution. The patches were initially segmented from the dayside storm enhanced density plume at the equatorward edge of the cusp, by the expansion and contraction of the polar cap boundary due to pulsed dayside magnetopause reconnection, as indicated by in situ Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms(THEMIS) observations. Convection led to the patches entering the polar cap and being transported antisunward, while being continuously monitored by the globally distributed arrays of GPS receivers and Super Dual Auroral Radar Network radars. Changes in convection over time resulted in the patches following a range of trajectories, each of which differed somewhat from the classical twin-cell convection streamlines. Pulsed nightside reconnection, occurring as part of the magnetospheric substorm cycle, modulated the exit of the patches from the polar cap, as confirmed by coordinated observations of the magnetometer at Tromsø and European Incoherent Scatter Tromsø UHF radar. After exiting the polar cap, the patches broke up into a number of plasma blobs and returned sunward in the auroral return flow of the dawn and/or dusk convection cell. The full circulation time was about 3 h.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine if there are significant differences in curvature of the treated vessel after the deployment of a polymeric BRS or MPS in long lesions. The impact of long polymeric bioresorbable scaffolds (BRS) compared with metallic platform stents (MPS) on vessel curvature is unknown. This retrospective study compares 32 patients who received a single everolimus-eluting BRS with 32 patients treated with a single MPS of 28 mm. Quantitative coronary angiography (QCA) was used to evaluate curvature of the treatment and peri-treatment region before and after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Baseline demographic and angiographic characteristics were similar between the BRS and MPS groups. Pretreatment lesion length was 22.19 versus 20.38 mm in the BRS and MPS groups respectively (p = 0.803). After treatment, there was a decrease in median diastolic curvature in the MPS group (from 0.257 to 0.199 cm−1, p = 0.001). 17. Polar cap patch segmentation of the tongue of ionization in the morning convection cell

Abstract

Two types of poleward moving plasma concentration enhancements (PMPCEs) were observed during a sequence of pulsed reconnection events, both in the morning convection cell: Type L (low density) was associated with a cusp flow channel and seems likely to have been produced by ionization associated with particle precipitation, while Type H (high density) appeared to originate from the segmentation of the tongue of ionization by the processes which produced the Type L events. As a result, the Type L and Type H PMPCEs were interspersed, producing a complex density structure which underlines the importance of cusp flow channels as a mechanism for segmenting and structuring electron density in the cusp and shows the necessity of differentiating between at least two classes of electron density patches.

Abstract

Although the advent of drug-eluting stents has reduced the rates of target vessel revascularization, there are observations of ongoing stent failure occurring very late after stent implantation and presenting as very late restenosis or as very late stent thrombosis. The de novo development of atherosclerosis within the neointimal region, called neoatherosclerosis, has been identified as one of the pathomechanisms of these observed late stent failures. The mechanisms of neoatherosclerosis development and its association with stent failure are currently the subject of intensive research. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an invasive imaging modality that allows us to visualize the micromorphology of coronary arteries with near-histological resolution, thus providing detailed assessment of the morphological characteristics of the neointima after stent implantation, including neoatherosclerosis. Several OCT studies have tried to provide in vivo insights in the mechanisms of neoatherosclerosis development and its association with late stent failure. This review summarizes the current insights into neoatherosclerosis obtained with OCT and discusses the association of neoatherosclerosis with late stent failure.

Abstract

Ground-based observations can be used to provide substantial support for Cluster/Double Star measurements and greatly enhance the mission's scientific return. There are six Chinese ground stations involved in coordinated cluster/Double Star and ground-based instrument observations. Among them, the Chinese Zhongshan Station in Antarctica and the Yellow River Station on Svalbard are closely magnetic conjugate and are situated under the ionospheric projection of the magnetospheric cusp regions, which, combined with satellite data, provide a perfect configuration to conduct conjugate studies of cusp phenomena. In this paper we present the ground-based instrumentation at these stations, discuss the restriction which is applyed to the optical sites and present an overview of the occurrences for conjunctions of these instruments with the spacecraft. Samples of data products are given to illustrate the potential use of these instrumentations in coordination with Cluster/Double Star measurements.
