9. From Classroom to Computer Screen: NWLP Software. A Set of Computerized Garment-Related Bilingual (English and Chinese) Literacy Lessons.

Abstract

This document describes how National Workplace Literacy Program (NWLP) software was developed for Chinese garment workers in New York City. First, it discusses the goal of the workplace literacy program and the nature of the population served. Then, it indicates how NWLP software was designed to supplement the NWLP curriculum and to reinforce the classroom instruction. The program consisted of three 18-week cycles. Each cycle comprised of 50 hours of classroom instruction in garment-related English and English as a Second Language. Because there are limited garment-related teaching materials designed for teaching second-language speakers, the program had to adopt, tailor, and create teaching materials to meet the needs of the target population. Lesson plans include the following: (1) job titles and job descriptions; (2) men's and women's clothing; (3) seasonal clothing; (4) different parts of a garment; (5) measurement and size; and (6) safety at work (signs). On the average, each lesson consists of 35 computer screens and takes about 45 minutes for the participants to finish. Each lesson contains garment technologies, reading materials, self-test questions and self-scoring. An analysis of the original curriculum was made and a set of computerized garment-related bilingual lessons directly printed out from the computer are attached. Abstract

A mathematical model of induction motor was constructed. A new speed identification method of model reference adaptive system based on improved back-EMF was proposed on basis of analysis of stability of the model reference adaptive system based on reactive power. Error signal of speed identification of model reference adaptive system was re-constructed by the method. The error signal was composed of cross and dot product of the back-EMF error vector and the rotor flux vector. The rotor speed of the motor was identified by the error signal. The experimental results show that the new method is effective to solve problem of instability of the model referencing adaptive system under status of motor parking brake and power generation.

Abstract

Electrochemical polymerization of acrylic acid and acrylamide on carbon fiber was carried out by using cyclic voltammogram in the presence of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) as electrolyte. Cycles, monomer mass ratio, scan rate, and H2SO4 concentration had an effect on the electropolymerization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic behavior of modified carbon fiber was studied. Systematic experiments were conducted to determine the tensile strength of carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites before and after modification. As a result, the tensile strength of modified carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites was improved greatly. Surface morphology of the polymer films on carbon fiber was investigated by using scanning electron microscopy. It was found that voltammograms of electrodes prepared showed irreversible oxidation–reduction of the polymer films and capacitive behaviors of coated carbon fiber were defined using Nyquist plots, Bode magnitude plot and Bode phase plot at low-frequency region.

37. Fabrication and characterization of annealed proton exchanged long period waveguide grating in x-cut LiNbO3.

Abstract

In this paper, a long-period waveguide grating was fabricated in x-cut lithium niobate substrate by patterned annealed proton exchange waveguide fabrication process. The waveguide mode characteristic was evaluated using a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. It shows that the waveguide is single mode transmission at a wavelength of 1 550 nm. The transmission spectra of the long period waveguide gratings were measured by optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) and show an extinction ratio of ~17 dB and a 3 dB bandwidth of ~10 nm at the resonant wavelength. The resonant wavelength moves toward to the long wavelength direction as the waveguide width-difference increases in the same period, and also shifts toward to the long wavelength direction with the increase of the period in the case of the same waveguide width-difference. The method of fabricating a long period waveguide grating based on a patterned annealed proton exchange technique simplifies the fabrication process, and at the same time, reduces the fabrication cost. Abstract

In this paper an indirect stator-quantities control (ISC) strategy for Brushless doubly-fed induction machine (BDFIM) is presented. The algorithm of calculating phase increment of control winding(CW) flux space vector in a sample period is obtained. The proposed ISC strategy is developed at the static two-axis model and can be used to control both the electromagnetic torque and CW flux in static reference frame. The simulation results show the feasibility of this method for BDFIM. Compared with classic direct torque control(DTC) for BDFIM, the torque ripple is significantly reduced at low frequencies and the CW flux and current waveform are improved in ISC system. Rotating coordinate transformation is not required in this method. Less parameters are used and the structure of the system is concise and clear as well.
