Abstract

Enhancing AI systems with efficient communication skills that align with human understanding is crucial for their effective assistance to human users. Proactive initiatives from the system side are needed to discern specific circumstances and interact aptly with users to solve these scenarios. In this research, we opt for a collective building assignment taken from the Minecraft dataset. Our proposed method employs language modeling to enhance task understanding through state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods using language models. These models focus on grounding multi-modal understandinging and task-oriented dialogue comprehension tasks. This focus aids in gaining insights into how well these models interpret and respond to a variety of inputs and tasks. Our experimental results provide compelling evidence of the superiority of our proposed method. This showcases a substantial improvement and points towards a promising direction for future research in this domain., Comment: Work in Progress

Abstract

Colloidal chemistry holds promise to prepare uniform and size-controllable pre-catalysts; however, it remains a challenge to unveil the atomic-level transition from pre-catalysts to active catalytic surfaces under the reaction conditions to enable the mechanistic design of catalysts. Here, we report an ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy study, coupled with in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations, to elucidate the surface catalytic sites of colloidal Ni nanoparticles for CO2 hydrogenation. We show that Ni nanoparticles with phosphine ligands exhibit a distinct surface evolution compared with amine-capped ones, owing to the diffusion of P under oxidative (air) or reductive (CO2 + H2) gaseous environments at elevated temperatures. The resulting NiPx surface leads to a substantially improved selectivity for CO production, in contrast to the metallic Ni, which favors CH4. The further elimination of surface metallic Ni sites by designing multi-step P incorporation achieves unit selectivity of CO in high-rate CO2 hydrogenation.

Abstract

While the eddy covariance (EC) technique is a well-established method for measuring water fluxes (i.e., evaporation or 'evapotranspiration’, ET), the measurement is susceptible to many uncertainties. One such issue is the potential underestimation of ET when relative humidity (RH) is high (>70%), due to low-pass filtering with some EC systems. Yet, this underestimation for different types of EC systems (e.g. open-path or closed-path sensors) has not been characterized for synthesis datasets such as the widely used FLUXNET2015 dataset. Here, we assess the RH-associated underestimation of latent heat fluxes (LE, or ET) from different EC systems for 163 sites in the FLUXNET2015 dataset. We found that the LE underestimation is most apparent during hours when RH is higher than 70%, predominantly observed at sites using closed-path EC systems, but the extent of the LE underestimation is highly site-specific. We then propose a machine learning based method to correct for this underestimation, and compare it to two energy balance closure based LE correction approaches (Bowen ratio correction, BRC, and attributing all errors to LE). Our correction increases LE by 189% for closed-path sites at high RH (>90%), while BRC increases LE by around 30% for all RH conditions. Additionally, we assess the influence of these corrections on ET-based transpiration (T) estimates using two different ET partitioning methods. Results show opposite responses (increasing vs. slightly decreasing T-to-ET ratios, T/ET) between the two methods when comparing T based on corrected and uncorrected LE. Overall, our results demonstrate the existence of a high RH bias in water fluxes in the FLUXNET2015 dataset and suggest that this bias is a pronounced source of uncertainty in ET measurements to be considered when estimating ecosystem T/ET and WUE.

Abstract

BackgroundBreast tumors consist of heterogeneous cellular subpopulations that differ in molecular properties and functional attributes. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) play pivotal roles in cancer therapeutic failure and metastasis. However, it remains indeterminate how CSCs determine the progression of the bulk cancer cell population.MethodsCo-culture systems in vitro and co-implantation systems in vivo were designed to characterize the interactions between breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) and bulk cancer cells. RNA sequencing was performed to study the functional and mechanistic implications of the BCSC secretome on bulk cancer cells. A cytokine antibody array was employed to screen the differentially secreted cytokines in the BCSC secretome. Tail vein injection metastatic models and orthotopic xenograft models were applied to study the therapeutic potential of targeting IL8.ResultsWe identified that the BCSC secretome potentiated estrogen receptor (ER) activity in the bulk cancer cell population. The BCSC secretome rendered the bulk cancer cell population resistant to anti-estrogen and CDK4/6 inhibitor therapy; as well as increased the metastatic burden attributable to bulk cancer cells. Screening of the BCSC secretome identified IL8 as a pivotal factor that potentiated ERα activity, endowed tamoxifen resistance and enhanced metastatic burden by regulation of bulk cancer cell behavior. Pharmacological inhibition of IL8 increased the efficacy of fulvestrant and/or palbociclib by reversing tamoxifen resistance and abrogated metastatic burden.ConclusionTaken together, this study delineates the mechanism by which BCSCs determine the therapeutic response and metastasis of bulk cancer cells; and thereby suggests potential therapeutic strategies to ameliorate breast cancer outcomes. Abstract

This paper presents high-order Runge-Kutta (RK) discontinuous Galerkin methods for the Euler-Poisson equations in spherical symmetry. The scheme can preserve a general polytropic equilibrium state and achieve total energy conservation up to machine precision with carefully designed spatial and temporal discretizations. To achieve the well-balanced property, the numerical solutions are decomposed into equilibrium and fluctuation components which are treated differently in the source term approximation. One non-trivial challenge encountered in the procedure is the complexity of the equilibrium state, which is governed by the Lane-Emden equation. For total energy conservation, we present second- and third-order RK time discretization, where different source term approximations are introduced in each stage of the RK method to ensure the conservation of total energy. A carefully designed slope limiter for spherical symmetry is also introduced to eliminate oscillations near discontinuities while maintaining the well-balanced and total-energy-conserving properties. Extensive numerical examples -- including a toy model of stellar core-collapse with a phenomenological equation of state that results in core-bounce and shock formation -- are provided to demonstrate the desired properties of the proposed methods, including the well-balanced property, high-order accuracy, shock capturing capability, and total energy conservation.
