We report the first measurement of the parity-violating elastic electron scattering asymmetry on 27Al. The 27Al elastic asymmetry is A_PV = 2.16 +- 0.11 (stat) +- 0.16 (syst) ppm, and was measured at =0.02357 +- 0.0001 GeV^2, = 7.61 +- 0.02 degrees, and = 1.157 GeV with the Qweak apparatus at Jefferson Lab. Predictions using a simple Born approximation as well as more sophisticated distorted-wave calculations are in good agreement with this result. From this asymmetry the 27Al neutron radius R_n = 2.89 +- 0.12 fm was determined using a many-models correlation technique. The corresponding neutron skin thickness R_n-R_p = -0.04 +- 0.12 fm is small, as expected for a light nucleus with a neutron excess of only 1. This result thus serves as a successful benchmark for electroweak determinations of neutron radii on heavier nuclei. A tree-level approach was used to extract the 27Al weak radius R_w = 3.00 +- 0.15 fm, and the weak skin thickness R_wk - R_ch = -0.04 +- 0.15 fm. The weak form factor at this Q^2 is F_wk = 0.39 +- 0.04., Comment: Revised version after referee's comments and suggestions. We propose to use the High Momentum Spectrometer of Hall C combined with the Neutral Particle Spectrometer (NPS) to perform high precision measurements of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) cross section using a beam of positrons. The combination of measurements with oppositely charged incident beams is the only unambiguous way to disentangle the contribution of the DVCS$^2$ term in the photon electroproduction cross section from its interference with the Bethe-Heitler amplitude. This provides a stronger way to constrain the Generalized Parton Distributions of the nucleon. A wide range of kinematics accessible with an 11 GeV beam off an unpolarized proton target will be covered. The $Q^2-$dependence of each contribution will be measured independently.

We report measurements of the parity-conserving beam-normal single-spin elastic scattering asymmetries $B_n$ on $^{12}$C and $^{27}$Al, obtained with an electron beam polarized transverse to its momentum direction. These measurements add an additional kinematic point to a series of previous measurements of $B_n$ on $^{12}$C and provide a first measurement on $^{27}$Al. The experiment utilized the Qweak apparatus at Jefferson Lab with a beam energy of 1.158 GeV. The average lab scattering angle for both targets was 7.7 degrees, and the average $Q^2$ for both targets was 0.02437 GeV$^2$ (Q=0.1561 GeV). The asymmetries are $B_n$ = -10.68 $\pm$ 0.90 stat) $\pm$ 0.57 (syst) ppm for $^{12}$C and $B_n$ = -12.16 $\pm$ 0.58 (stat) $\pm$ 0.62 (syst) ppm for $^{27}$Al. The results are consistent with theoretical predictions, and are compared to existing data. When scaled by Z/A, the Q-dependence of all the far-forward angle (theta < 10 degrees) data from $^{1}$H to $^{27}$Al can be described by the same slope out to $Q \approx 0.35$ GeV. Larger-angle data from other experiments in the same Q range are consistent with a slope about twice as steep., Comment: Minor changes after refereeing; version as accepted for Physical Review C. Missing mass spectroscopy with the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction was performed at Jefferson Laboratory's Hall C for the neutron rich $\Lambda$ hypernucleus $^{9}_{\Lambda}{\rm Li}$. The ground state energy was obtained to be $B_{\Lambda}^{\rm g.s.}=8.84\pm0.17^{\rm stat.}\pm0.15^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ by using shell model calculations of a cross section ratio and an energy separation of the spin doublet states ($3/2^{+}_1$ and $5/2^{+}_1$). In addition, peaks that are considered to be states of [$^{8}{\rm Li}(3^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=3/2^{+}_{2}, 1/2^{+}$] and [$^{8}{\rm Li}(1^{+})\otimes s_{\Lambda}=5/2^{+}_{2}, 7/2^{+}$] were observed at $E_{\Lambda}({\rm no.~2})=1.74\pm0.27^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$ and $E_{\Lambda}({\rm no.~3})=3.30\pm0.24^{\rm stat.}\pm0.11^{\rm sys.}~{\rm MeV}$, respectively. The $E_{\Lambda}({\rm no.~3})$ is larger than shell model predictions by a few hundred keV, and the difference would indicate that a ${\rm ^{5}He}+t$ structure is more developed for the $3^{+}$ state than those for the $2^{+}$ and $1^{+}$ states in a core nucleus $^{8}{\rm Li}$ as a cluster model calculation suggests., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Positron beams, both polarized and unpolarized, are identified as essential ingredients for the experimental programs at the next generation of lepton accelerators. In the context of the hadronic physics program at Jefferson Lab (JLab), positron beams are complementary, even essential, tools for a precise understanding of the electromagnetic structure of nucleons and nuclei, in both the elastic and deep-inelastic regimes. For instance, elastic scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons from the nucleon enables a model independent determination of its electromagnetic form factors. Also, the deeply-virtual scattering of polarized and unpolarized electrons and positrons allows unambiguous separation of the different contributions to the cross section of the lepto-production of photons and of lepton-pairs, enabling an accurate determination of the nucleons and nuclei generalized parton distributions, and providing an access to the gravitational form factors. Furthermore, positron beams offer the possibility of alternative tests of the Standard Model of particle physics through the search of a dark photon, the precise measurement of electroweak couplings, and the investigation of charged lepton flavor violation. A beam-normal single-spin asymmetry generated in the scattering of transversely polarized electrons from unpolarized nucleons is an observable related to the imaginary part of the two-photon exchange process. We report a 2% precision measurement of the beam-normal single-spin asymmetry in elastic electron-proton scattering with a mean scattering angle of theta_lab = 7.9 degrees and a mean energy of 1.149 GeV. The asymmetry result is B_n = -5.194 +- 0.067 (stat) +- 0.082 (syst) ppm. This paper discusses the quality and performance of currently available PbWO$_4$ crystals of relevance to high-resolution electromagnetic calorimetry, e.g. detectors for the Neutral Particle Spectrometer at Jefferson Lab or those planned for the Electron-Ion Collider. Since the construction of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and early PANDA (The antiProton ANnihilations at DArmstadt) electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL) the worldwide availability of high quality PbWO$_4$ production has changed dramatically. Positron beams, both polarized and unpolarized, are identified as essential ingredients for the experimental program at the next generation of lepton accelerators. In the context of the Hadronic Physics program at the Jefferson Laboratory (JLab), positron beams are complementary, even essential, tools for a precise understanding of the electromagnetic structure of the nucleon, in both the elastic and the deep-inelastic regimes. The fields of particle and nuclear physics have undertaken extensive programs to search for evidence of physics beyond that explained by current theories. The observation of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider completed the set of particles predicted by the Standard Model (SM), currently the best description of fundamental particles and forces. However, the theory's limitations include a failure to predict fundamental parameters and the inability to account for dark matter/energy, gravity, and the matter-antimater asymmetry in the universe, among other phenomena. Given the lack of additional particles found so far through direct searches in the post-Higgs era, indirect searches utilizing precise measurements of well predicted SM observables allow highly targeted alternative tests for physics beyond the SM. Indirect searches have the potential to reach mass/energy scales beyond those directly accessible by today's high-energy accelerators. The value of the weak charge of the proton Q_W^p is an example of such an indirect search, as it sets the strength of the proton's interaction with particles via the well-predicted neutral electroweak force. Parity violation (invariance under spatial inversion (x,y,z) -> (-x,-y,-z)) is violated only in the weak interaction, thus providing a unique tool to isolate the weak interaction in order to measure the proton's weak charge. Here we report Q_W^p=0.0719+-0.0045, as extracted from our measured parity-violating (PV) polarized electron-proton scattering asymmetry, A_ep=-226.5+-9.3 ppb. Our value of Q_W^p is in excellent agreement with the SM, and sets multi-TeV-scale constraints on any semi-leptonic PV physics not described within the SM., Comment: Direct link to Nature Version "https://rdcu.be/954U"

We propose a new experiment for decay pion spectroscopy of light hypernuclei at electron- and proton-beam facilities, using the recoil distance technique for separation of produced hypernuclei and a magnetic spectrometer for precise measurement of the decay pion momentum. Low-pressure MWPCs are advocated for low-energy recoil detection as they provide position and time information and are highly insensitive to gamma-ray and electron background. The position and timing characteristics of such a recoil detector were studied using ~5 MeV {\alpha}-particles. By using the present proposed approach the rate of the detected hypernuclei can be increased by one-to-two orders of magnitude compared to a recent experiment carried out at the MAMI electron accelerator in Mainz. The possibility of realizing a high luminosity decay pion spectroscopy experiment with proton beams is also discussed., Comment: 29 pages, 15 figures

We propose a new method for absolute momentum calibration of magnetic spectrometers used in nuclear physics, using the time-of-flight (TOF), differences of pairs of particles with different masses. In cases where the flight path is not known, a calibration can be determined by using the TOF differences of two pair combinations of three particles. A Cherenkov detector, read out by a radio frequency photomultiplier tube, is considered as the high-resolution and highly stable TOF detector. By means of Monte Carlo simulations it is demonstrated that the magnetic spectrometers at the MAMI electron-scattering facility can be calibrated absolutely with an accuracy $\delta p/p\leq 10^{-4}$, which will be crucial for high precision determination of hypernuclear masses., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures

Hadronic reactions producing strange quarks such as exclusive or semi-inclusive kaon production, play an important role in studies of hadron structure and the dynamics that bind the most basic elements of nuclear physics. The small-angle capability of the new Super High Momentum Spectrometer (SHMS) in Hall C, coupled with its high momentum reach - up to the anticipated 11-GeV beam energy in Hall C - and coincidence capability with the well-understood High Momentum Spectrometer, will allow for probes of such hadron structure involving strangeness down to the smallest distance scales to date. To cleanly select the kaons, a threshold aerogel Cerenkov detector has been constructed for the SHMS. The detector consists of an aerogel tray followed by a diffusion box. Four trays for aerogel of nominal refractive indices of n=1.030, 1.020, 1.015 and 1.011 were constructed. The tray combination will allow for identification of kaons from 1 GeV/c up to 7.2 GeV/c, reaching 10^-2 proton and 10^-3 pion rejection, with kaon detection efficiency better than 95%. The diffusion box of the detector is equipped with 14 five-inch diameter photomultiplier tubes. Its interior walls are covered with Gore diffusive reflector, which is superior to the commonly used Millipore paper and improved the detector performance by 35%. The inner surface of the two aerogel trays with higher refractive index is covered with Millipore paper, however, those two trays with lower aerogel refractive index are again covered with Gore diffusive reflector for higher performance. The measured mean number of photoelectrons in saturation is ~12 for n=1.030, ~sim8 for n=1.020, ~10 for n=1.015, and ~5.5 for n=1.011. The design details, the results of component characterization, and initial performance tests and optimization of the detector are presented.

The missing mass spectroscopy of the $^{7}_{\Lambda}$He hypernucleus was performed, using the $^{7}$Li$(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})^{7}_{\Lambda}$He reaction at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Hall C. The $\Lambda$ binding energy of the ground state (1/2$^{+}$) was determined with a smaller error than that of the previous measurement, being $B_{\Lambda}$ = 5.55 $\pm$ 0.10(stat.) $\pm$ 0.11(sys.) MeV. The experiment also provided new insight into charge symmetry breaking in p-shell hypernuclear systems. Finally, a peak at $B_{\Lambda}$ = 3.65 $\pm$ 0.20(stat.) $\pm$ 0.11(sys.) MeV was observed and assigned as a mixture of 3/2$^{+}$ and 5/2$^{+}$ states, confirming the "gluelike" behavior of $\Lambda$, which makes an unstable state in $^{6}$He stable against neutron emission., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Spectroscopy of a $^{10}_{\Lambda}$Be hypernucleus was carried out at JLab Hall C using the $(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})$ reaction. A new magnetic spectrometer system (SPL+HES+HKS), specifically designed for high resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy, was used to obtain an energy spectrum with a resolution of 0.78 MeV (FWHM). The well-calibrated spectrometer system of the present experiment using the $p(e,e^{\prime}K^{+})\Lambda,\Sigma^{0}$ reactions allowed us to determine the energy levels, and the binding energy of the ground state peak (mixture of 1$^{-}$ and 2$^{-}$ states) was obtained to be B$_{\Lambda}$=8.55$\pm$0.07(stat.)$\pm$0.11(sys.) MeV. The result indicates that the ground state energy is shallower than that of an emulsion study by about 0.5 MeV which provides valuable experimental information on charge symmetry breaking effect in the $\Lambda N$ interaction., Comment: 6 figures

For the production of a polarized antiproton beam various methods have been suggested including the possibility that antiprotons may be produced polarized which will be checked experimentally. The polarization of antiprotons produced under typical conditions for antiproton beam preparation will be measured at the CERN/PS. If the production process creates some polarization a polarized antiproton beam could be prepared by a rather simple modification of the antiproton beam facility. The detection setup and the expected experimental conditions are described.

The Jefferson Lab Q_weak experiment determined the weak charge of the proton by measuring the parity-violating elastic scattering asymmetry of longitudinally polarized electrons from an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target at small momentum transfer. A custom apparatus was designed for this experiment to meet the technical challenges presented by the smallest and most precise ${\vec{e}}$p asymmetry ever measured. Technical milestones were achieved at Jefferson Lab in target power, beam current, beam helicity reversal rate, polarimetry, detected rates, and control of helicity-correlated beam properties. The experiment employed 180 microA of 89% longitudinally polarized electrons whose helicity was reversed 960 times per second. The electrons were accelerated to 1.16 GeV and directed to a beamline with extensive instrumentation to measure helicity-correlated beam properties that can induce false asymmetries. Moller and Compton polarimetry were used to measure the electron beam polarization to better than 1%. The electron beam was incident on a 34.4 cm liquid hydrogen target. After passing through a triple collimator system, scattered electrons between 5.8 degrees and 11.6 degrees were bent in the toroidal magnetic field of a resistive copper-coil magnet. The electrons inside this acceptance were focused onto eight fused silica Cerenkov detectors arrayed symmetrically around the beam axis. A total scattered electron rate of about 7 GHz was incident on the detector array. The detectors were read out in integrating mode by custom-built low-noise pre-amplifiers and 18-bit sampling ADC modules. The momentum transfer Q^2 = 0.025 GeV^2 was determined using dedicated low-current (~100 pA) measurements with a set of drift chambers before (and a set of drift chambers and trigger scintillation counters after) the toroidal magnet., Comment: 48 pages, 36 figures. Since the pioneering experiment, E89-009 studying hypernuclear spectroscopy using the $(e,e^{\prime}K^+)$ reaction was completed, two additional experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, were performed at Jefferson Lab. These later experiments used a modified experimental design, the "tilt method", to dramatically suppress the large electromagnetic background, and allowed for a substantial increase in luminosity. Additionally, a new kaon spectrometer, HKS (E01-011), a new electron spectrometer, HES, and a new splitting magnet were added to produce precision, high-resolution hypernuclear spectroscopy. These two experiments, E01-011 and E05-115, resulted in two new data sets, producing sub-MeV energy resolution in the spectra of ${}^{7}_{\Lambda}\text{He}$, ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$ and ${}^{28}_{\Lambda}\text{Al}$ and ${}^{7}_{\Lambda}\text{He}$, ${}^{10}_{\Lambda}\text{Be}$, ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$ and ${}^{52}_{\Lambda}\text{V}$. All three experiments obtained a ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$, spectrum, which is the most characteristic $p$-shell hypernucleus and is commonly used for calibration. Independent analyses of these different experiments demonstrate excellent consistency and provide the clearest level structure to date of this hypernucleus as produced by the $(e,e^{\prime}K^+)$ reaction. This paper presents details of these experiments, and the extraction and analysis of the observed ${}^{12}_{\Lambda}\text{B}$ spectrum.

A subset of results from the recently completed Jefferson Lab Qweak experiment are reported. This experiment, sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model, exploits the small parity-violating asymmetry in elastic ep scattering to provide the first determination of the protons weak charge Qweak(p). The experiment employed a 180 uA longitudinally polarized 1.16 GeV electron beam on a 35 cm long liquid hydrogen target. Scattered electrons corresponding to Q2 of 0.025 GeV2 were detected in eight Cerenkov detectors arrayed symmetrically around the beam axis. The goals of the experiment were to provide a measure of Qweak(p) to 4.2 percent (combined statistical and systematic error), which implies a measure of sin2(thetaw) at the level of 0.3 percent, and to help constrain the vector weak quark charges C1u and C1d. The experimental method is described, with particular focus on the challenges associated with the worlds highest power LH2 target. The new constraints on C1u and C1d provided by the subset of the experiments data analyzed to date will also be shown, together with the extracted weak charge of the neutron., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, INPC2013

The Qweak experiment has measured the parity-violating asymmetry in polarized e-p elastic scattering at Q^2 = 0.025(GeV/c)^2, employing 145 microamps of 89% longitudinally polarized electrons on a 34.4cm long liquid hydrogen target at Jefferson Lab. The results of the experiment's commissioning run are reported here, constituting approximately 4% of the data collected in the experiment. From these initial results the measured asymmetry is Aep = -279 +- 35 (statistics) +- 31 (systematics) ppb, which is the smallest and most precise asymmetry ever measured in polarized e-p scattering. The small Q^2 of this experiment has made possible the first determination of the weak charge of the proton, QpW, by incorporating earlier parity-violating electron scattering (PVES) data at higher Q^2 to constrain hadronic corrections. The value of QpW obtained in this way is QpW(PVES) = 0.064 +- 0.012, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction of QpW(SM) = 0.0710 +- 0.0007. When this result is further combined with the Cs atomic parity violation (APV) measurement, significant constraints on the weak charges of the up and down quarks can also be extracted. That PVES+APV analysis reveals the neutron's weak charge to be QnW(PVES+APV) = -0.975 +- 0.010., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The lifetime of a Lambda particle embedded in a nucleus (hypernucleus) decreases from that of free Lambda decay due to the opening of the Lambda N to NN weak decay channel. However, it is generally believed that the lifetime of a hypernucleus attains a constant value (saturation) for medium to heavy hypernuclear masses, yet this hypothesis has been difficult to verify. The present paper reports a direct measurement of the lifetime of medium-heavy hypernuclei produced with a photon-beam from Fe, Cu, Ag, and Bi targets. The recoiling hypernuclei were detected by a fission fragment detector using low-pressure multi-wire proportional chambers. The experiment agrees remarkably well with the only previously-measured single-species heavy-hypernucleus lifetime, that of Fe56_Lambda at KEK, and has significantly higher precision. An experiment with a newly developed high-resolution kaon spectrometer (HKS) and a scattered electron spectrometer with a novel configuration was performed in Hall C at Jefferson Lab (JLab). The ground state of a neutron-rich hypernucleus, He 7 Lambda, was observed for the first time with the (e,e'K+) reaction with an energy resolution of ~0.6 MeV. This resolution is the best reported to date for hypernuclear reaction spectroscopy. The he 7 Lambda binding energy supplies the last missing information of the A=7, T=1 hypernuclear iso-triplet, providing a new input for the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) effect of \Lambda N potential., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to PRL

The electromagnetic calorimeters of the various magnetic spectrometers in Hall C at Jefferson Lab are presented. For the existing HMS and SOS spectrometers design considerations, relevant construction information, and comparisons of simulated and experimental results are included. The energy resolution of the HMS and SOS calorimeters is better than $\sigma/E \sim 6%/\sqrt E $, and pion/electron ($\pi/e$) separation of about 100:1 has been achieved in energy range 1 -- 5 GeV. Good agreement has been observed between the experimental and simulated energy resolutions, but simulations systematically exceed experimentally determined $\pi^-$ suppression factors by close to a factor of two. For the SHMS spectrometer presently under construction details on the design and accompanying GEANT4 simulation efforts are given. The anticipated performance of the new calorimeter is predicted over the full momentum range of the SHMS. Good electron/hadron separation is anticipated by combining the energy deposited in an initial (preshower) calorimeter layer with the total energy deposited in the calorimeter., Comment: 22 pages, 33 figures
