Traditional orchard production is facing problems of labor shortage due to the aging, difficulties in the management of agricultural equipment and production materials, and low production efficiency which can be expected to be solved by building a smart orchard that integrates technologies of Internet of Things(IoT), big data, equipment intelligence, et al. In this study, based on the objectives of full mechanization and intelligent management, a smart orchard was built in Pinggu district, an important peaches and pears fruit producing area of Beijing. The orchard covers an aera of more than 30 hm2 in Xiying village, Yukou town. In the orchard, more than 10 kinds of information acquisition sensors for pests, diseases, water, fertilizers and medicines are applied, 28 kinds of agricultural machineries with intelligent technical support are equipped. The key technologies used include: intelligent information acquisition system, integrated water and fertilizer management system and intelligent pest management system. The intelligent operation equipment system includes: unmanned lawn mower, intelligent anti-freeze machine, trenching and fertilizer machine, automatic driving crawler, intelligent profiling variable sprayer, six-rotor branch-to-target drone, multi-functional picking platform and finishing and pruning machine, etc. At the same time, an intelligent management platform has been built in the smart orchard. The comparison results showed that, smart orchard production can reduce labor costs by more than 50%, save pesticide dosage by 30% ~ 40%, fertilizer dosage by 25% ~ 35%, irrigation water consumption by 60% ~ 70%, and comprehensive economic benefits increased by 32.5%. The popularization and application of smart orchards will further promote China's fruit production level and facilitate the development of smart agriculture in China.

Effective in-season crop nitrogen (N) status diagnosis is important for precision crop N management, and remote sensing using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is one efficient means of conducting crop N nutrient diagnosis. Here, field experiments were conducted with six N levels and six maize hybrids to determine the nitrogen nutrition index (NNI) and yield, and to diagnose the N status of the hybrids combined with multi-spectral data. The NNI threshold values varied with hybrids and years, ranging from 0.99 to 1.17 in 2018 and 0.60 to 0.71 in 2019. A proper agronomic optimal N rate (AONR) was constructed and confirmed based on the measured NNI and yield. The NNI (R2 = 0.64–0.79) and grain yield (R2 = 0.70–0.73) were predicted well across hybrids using a random forest model with spectral, structural, and textural data (UAV). The AONRs calculated using the predicted NNI and yield were significantly correlated with the measured NNI (R2 = 0.70 and 0.71 in 2018 and 2019, respectively) and yield (R2 = 0.68 and 0.54 in 2018 and 2019, respectively). The timely and accurate estimation of above-ground biomass (AGB) is crucial for indicating crop growth status, assisting management decisions, and predicting grain yield. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing technology is a promising approach for monitoring crop biomass. However, the determination of winter wheat AGB based on canopy reflectance is affected by spectral saturation effects. Thus, constructing a generic model for accurately estimating winter wheat AGB using UAV data is significant. In this study, a three-dimensional conceptual model (3DCM) for estimating winter wheat AGB was constructed using plant height (PH) and fractional vegetation cover (FVC). Compared with both the traditional vegetation index model and the traditional multi-feature combination model, the 3DCM yielded the best accuracy for the jointing stage (based on RGB data: coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.82, normalized root mean square error (nRMSE) = 0.2; based on multispectral (MS) data: R2 = 0.84, nRMSE = 0.16), but the accuracy decreased significantly when the spike organ appeared. Therefore, the spike number (SN) was added to create a new three-dimensional conceptual model (n3DCM). Under different growth stages and UAV platforms, the n3DCM (RGB: R2 = 0.73–0.85, nRMSE = 0.17–0.23; MS: R2 = 0.77–0.84, nRMSE = 0.17–0.23) remarkably outperformed the traditional multi-feature combination model (RGB: R2 = 0.67–0.88, nRMSE = 0.15–0.25; MS: R2 = 0.60–0.77, nRMSE = 0.19–0.26) for the estimation accuracy of the AGB. This study suggests that the n3DCM has great potential in resolving spectral errors and monitoring growth parameters, which could be extended to other crops and regions for AGB estimation and field-based high-throughput phenotyping.
