Using hard (E>10 keV) X-ray observations with NuSTAR, we are able to differentiate between accretion states, and thus compact object types, of neutron stars and black holes in X-ray binaries (XRBs) in M31, our nearest Milky Way-type neighbor. Using ten moderate-depth (20-50 ks) observations of the disk of M31 covering a total of ~0.45 deg$^{2}$, we detect 20 sources at 2$\sigma$ in the 4-25 keV band pass, 14 of which we consider to be XRB candidates. This complements an existing deeper (100-400 ks) survey covering ~0.2 deg$^{2}$ of the bulge and the northeastern disk. We make tentative classifications of 9 of these sources with the use of diagnostic color-intensity and color-color diagrams, which separate sources into various neutron star and black hole regimes, identifying 3 black holes and 6 neutron stars. In addition, we create X-ray luminosity functions for both the full (4-25 keV) and hard (12-25 keV) band, as well as sub-populations of the full band based on compact object type and association with globular clusters. Our best fit globular cluster XLF is shallower than the field XLF, and preliminary BH and NS XLFs suggest a difference in shape based on compact object type. We find that the cumulative disk XLFs in the full and hard band are best fit by power laws with indices of 1.32 and 1.28 respectively. We construct simulated galaxy data sets based on the High Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) mission concept to demonstrate the significant advances in galaxy science that will be yielded by the HEX-P observatory. The combination of high spatial resolution imaging ($<$20 arcsec FWHM), broad spectral coverage (0.2-80 keV), and sensitivity superior to current facilities (e.g., XMM-Newton and NuSTAR) will enable HEX-P to detect hard (4-25 keV) X-ray emission from resolved point-source populations within $\sim$800 galaxies and integrated emission from $\sim$6000 galaxies out to 100 Mpc. These galaxies cover wide ranges of galaxy types (e.g., normal, starburst, and passive galaxies) and properties (e.g., metallicities and star-formation histories). In such galaxies, HEX-P will: (1) provide unique information about X-ray binary populations, including accretor demographics (black hole and neutron stars), distributions of accretion states and state transition cadences; (2) place order-of-magnitude more stringent constraints on inverse Compton emission associated with particle acceleration in starburst environments; and (3) put into clear context the contributions from X-ray emitting populations to both ionizing the surrounding interstellar medium in low-metallicity galaxies and heating the intergalactic medium in the $z > 8$ Universe., Comment: Accepted for publication in Frontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences

(abridged) The overwhelming majority of diagnostic tools for galactic activity are focused on active galaxies. Passive or dormant galaxies are often excluded from these diagnostics which usually employ emission line features. In this work, we use infrared and optical colors in order to build an all-inclusive galactic activity diagnostic tool that can discriminate between star-forming, AGN, LINER, composite, and passive galaxies, and which can be used in local and low-redshift galaxies. We explore classification criteria based on infrared colors from the 3 WISE bands supplemented with optical colors from the u, g, and r SDSS bands. From these we aim to find the minimal combination of colors for optimal results. Furthermore, to mitigate biases related to aperture effects, we introduce a new WISE photometric scheme combing different sized apertures. We develop a diagnostic tool using machine learning methods that includes both active and passive galaxies under one unified scheme using 3 colors. We find that the combination of W1-W2, W2-W3, and g-r colors offers good performance while the broad availability of these colors for a large number of galaxies ensures wide applicability on large galaxy samples. The overall accuracy is $\sim$81% while the achieved completeness for each class is $\sim$81% for star-forming, $\sim$56% for AGN, $\sim$68% for LINER, $\sim$65% for composite, and $\sim$85% for passive galaxies. Our diagnostic provides a significant improvement over existing IR diagnostics by including all types of active, as well as passive galaxies, and extending them to the local Universe. The inclusion of the optical colors improves their performance in identifying low-luminosity AGN which are generally confused with star-forming galaxies, and helps to identify cases of starbursts with extreme mid-IR colors which mimic obscured AGN galaxies, a well-known problem for most IR diagnostics., Comment: Accepted for publication in the A&A journal. Luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs), the most extreme star-forming galaxies in the nearby (D$<$30 Mpc) Universe, show a notable X-ray emission deficiency (up to a factor of $\sim$10) compared with predictions from scaling relations of galaxy-wide high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) luminosity with star-formation rate. In the nearby ($\approx$20 Mpc) LIRG NGC 7552, the majority of the IR emission originates in a circumnuclear starburst ring, which has been resolved into several discrete knots of star formation. We present results from recent Chandra observations of NGC 7552, which reveal significant deficits in the 2-7 keV X-ray luminosities from two of the most powerful star-forming knots. We hypothesize that the expected luminous HMXB populations in these knots are either (1) obscured by very large column densities or (2) suppressed due to the knots having relatively high metallicity and/or very young ages ($\lesssim$ 5 Myr). We distinguish between these possibilities using data from recent NuSTAR observations, whose sensitivity above 10 keV is capable of uncovering heavily obscured HMXB populations, since emission at these energies is more immune to absorption effects. We find no evidence of a heavily obscured HMXB population in the central region of NGC 7552, suggesting suppressed HMXB formation. We further show that metallicity-dependent scaling relations cannot fully account for the observed deficit from the most powerful star-forming knots or the central region as a whole. Thus, we suggest that recent bursts in local star formation activity likely drive the high $L_{\rm{IR}}$ within these regions on timescales $\lesssim$ 5 Myr, shorter than the timescale required for the formation of HMXBs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (17 pages, 3 tables, 8 figures)

X-ray appearance of normal galaxies is mainly determined by X-ray binaries powered by accretion onto a neutron star or a stellar mass black hole. Their populations scale with the star-formation rate and stellar mass of the host galaxy and their X-ray luminosity distributions show a significant split between star-forming and passive galaxies, both facts being consequences of the dichotomy between high- and low-mass X-ray binaries. Metallicity, IMF and stellar age dependencies, and dynamical formation channels add complexity to this picture. The numbers of high-mass X-ray binaries observed in star-forming galaxies indicate quite high probability for a massive star to become an accretion powered X-ray source once upon its lifetime. This explains the unexpectedly high contribution of X-ray binaries to the Cosmic X-ray Background, of the order of $\sim 10\%$, mostly via X-ray emission of faint star-forming galaxies located at moderate redshifts which may account for the unresolved part of the CXB. We use the Random Forest (RF) algorithm to develop a tool for automated activity classification of galaxies into 5 different classes: Star-forming (SF), AGN, LINER, Composite, and Passive. We train the algorithm on a combination of mid-IR (WISE) and optical photometric data while the true labels (activity classes) are based on emission line ratios. Our classifier is built to be redshift-agnostic and it is applicable to objects up to z $\sim$0.1. It reaches a completeness $>$80 % for SF and Passive galaxies, and $\sim$60 % for AGN. The stellar mass ($M_\star$) and the star-formation rate (SFR) are among the most important features that characterize galaxies. Measuring these fundamental properties accurately is critical for understanding the present state of galaxies, and their history. This work explores the dependence of the IR emission of galaxies on their extinction, and the age of their stellar populations (SPs). It aims at providing accurate IR SFR and $M_\star$ calibrations that account for SP age and extinction while quantifying their scatter. We use the CIGALE spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code to create models of galaxies with a wide range of star-formation histories, dust content, and interstellar medium properties. We fit the relations between $M_\star$ and SFR with IR and optical photometry of the model-galaxy SEDs with the MCMC method, and perform a machine-learning random forest analysis on the same data set in order to validate the latter. This work provides calibrations for the SFR using a combination of the WISE bands 1 and 3, or the JWST F200W and F2100W bands. It also provides mass-to-light ratio calibrations based on the WISE band-1, or the JWST band F200W, along with the optical $u-r$ or $g-r$ colors. These calibrations account for the biases attributed to the SP age, while they are given in the form of extinction-dependent and extinction-independent relations. They show robust estimations while minimizing the scatter and biases throughout a wide range of SFRs and stellar masses. The SFR calibration offers better results, especially in dust-free or passive galaxies where the contributions of old SPs or biases from the lack of dust are significant. Similarly, the $M_\star$ calibration yields significantly better results for dusty/high-SFR galaxies where dust emission can otherwise bias the estimations., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures. The ever-expanding observational sample of X-ray binaries (XRBs) makes them excellent laboratories for constraining binary evolution theory. Such constraints can be obtained by studying the effects of various physical assumptions on synthetic X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) and comparing to observed XLFs. In this work, we focus on high-mass XRBs (HMXBs) and study the effects on the XLF of various, poorly-constrained assumptions regarding physical processes such as the common-envelope phase, the core-collapse, and wind-fed accretion. We use the new binary population synthesis code POSYDON, which employs extensive pre-computed grids of detailed stellar structure and binary evolution models, to simulate the evolution of binaries. We generate 96 synthetic XRB populations corresponding to different combinations of model assumptions. The generated HMXB XLFs are feature-rich, deviating from the commonly assumed single-power law. We find a break in our synthetic XLF at luminosity $\sim 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$, similar to observed XLFs. However, we find also a general overabundance of XRBs (up to a factor of $\sim$10 for certain model parameter combinations) driven primarily by XRBs with black hole accretors. Assumptions about the transient behavior of Be-XRBs, asymmetric supernova kicks, and common-envelope physics can significantly affect the shape and normalization of our synthetic XLFs. We find that less well-studied assumptions regarding the circularization of the orbit at the onset of Roche-lobe overflow and criteria for the formation of an X-ray emitting accretion disk around wind-accreting black holes can also impact our synthetic XLFs. Data from high-energy observations are usually obtained as lists of photon events. A common analysis task for such data is to identify whether diffuse emission exists, and to estimate its surface brightness, even in the presence of point sources that may be superposed. We have developed a novel non-parametric event list segmentation algorithm to divide up the field of view into distinct emission components. We use photon location data directly, without binning them into an image. We first construct a graph from the Voronoi tessellation of the observed photon locations and then grow segments using a new adaptation of seeded region growing, that we call Seeded Region Growing on Graph, after which the overall method is named SRGonG. Starting with a set of seed locations, this results in an over-segmented dataset, which SRGonG then coalesces using a greedy algorithm where adjacent segments are merged to minimize a model comparison statistic; we use the Bayesian Information Criterion. Using SRGonG we are able to identify point-like and diffuse extended sources in the data with equal facility. We validate SRGonG using simulations, demonstrating that it is capable of discerning irregularly shaped low surface-brightness emission structures as well as point-like sources with strengths comparable to that seen in typical X-ray data. We demonstrate SRGonG's use on the Chandra data of the Antennae galaxies, and show that it segments the complex structures appropriately.

We report the discovery of statistically significant spatial structures in the projected two-dimensional distributions of the Globular Cluster (GC) systems of 10 among the brightest galaxies in the Fornax Cluster. We use a catalog of GCs extracted from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Fornax Cluster Survey (ACSFCS) imaging data. We characterize the size, shape and location relative to the host galaxies of the GC structures and suggest a classification based on their morphology and location that is suggestive of different formation mechanisms. We also investigate the GC structures in the context of the positions of their host galaxies relative to the general spatial distributions of galaxies and intra-cluster globular clusters in the Fornax Cluster. We finally estimate the dynamical masses of the progenitors of some GC structures, under the assumption that they are the relics of past accretion events of satellite galaxies by their hosts., Comment: 40 pages, 26 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the two-point cross-correlation function between high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and their likely birthplaces (OB Associations: OBAs). This function compares the spatial correlation between the observed HMXB and OBA populations against mock catalogs in which the members are distributed randomly across the sky. A significant correlation (15 sigma) is found for the HMXB and OBA populations when compared with a randomized catalog in which the OBAs are distributed uniformly over the SMC. A less significant correlation (4 sigma) is found for a randomized catalog of OBAs built with a bootstrap method. However, no significant correlation is detected when the randomized catalogs assume the form of a Gaussian ellipsoid or a distribution that reflects the star-formation history from 40 Myr ago. Based on their observed distributions and assuming a range of migration timescales, we infer that the average value of the kick velocity inherited by an HMXB during the formation of its compact object is 2-34 km/s. We constrain the mass distribution in nearby, star-forming galaxies with the Star Formation Reference Survey (SFRS), a galaxy sample constructed to be representative of all known combinations of star formation rate (SFR), dust temperature, and specific star formation rate (sSFR) that exist in the Local Universe. An innovative two-dimensional bulge/disk decomposition of the 2MASS/$K_{s}$-band images of the SFRS galaxies yields global luminosity and stellar mass functions, along with separate mass functions for their bulges and disks. These accurate mass functions cover the full range from dwarf galaxies to large spirals, and are representative of star-forming galaxies selected based on their infra-red luminosity, unbiased by AGN content and environment. We measure an integrated luminosity density $j$ = 1.72 $\pm$ 0.93 $\times$ 10$^{9}$ L$_{\odot}$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$ and a total stellar mass density $\rho_{M}$ = 4.61 $\pm$ 2.40 $\times$ 10$^{8}$ M$_{\odot}$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-3}$. While the stellar mass of the \emph{average} star-forming galaxy is equally distributed between its sub-components, disks globally dominate the mass density budget by a ratio 4:1 with respect to bulges. In particular, our functions suggest that recent star formation happened primarily in massive systems, where they have yielded a disk stellar mass density larger than that of bulges by more than 1 dex. We present new H$\alpha$ photometry for the Star-Formation Reference Survey (SFRS), a representative sample of star-forming galaxies in the local Universe. Combining these data with the panchromatic coverage of the SFRS, we provide calibrations of H$\alpha$-based star-formation rates (SFRs) with and without correction for the contribution of [$\rm N_{^{II}}$] emission. We consider the effect of extinction corrections based on the Balmer decrement, infrared excess (IRX), and spectral energy distribution (SED) fits. We compare the SFR estimates derived from SED fits, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, hybrid indicators such as 24 $\mu$m + H$\alpha$, 8 $\mu$m + H$\alpha$, FIR + FUV, and H$\alpha$ emission for a sample of purely star-forming galaxies. We provide a new calibration for 1.4 GHz-based SFRs by comparing to the H$\alpha$ emission, and we measure a dependence of the radio-to-H$\alpha$ emission ratio based on galaxy stellar mass. Active galactic nuclei introduce biases in the calibrations of different SFR indicators but have only a minimal effect on the inferred SFR densities from galaxy surveys. We present the Heraklion Extragalactic Catalogue, or HECATE, an all-sky value-added galaxy catalogue, aiming to facilitate present and future multi-wavelength and multi-messenger studies in the local Universe. It contains 204,733 galaxies up to a redshift of 0.047 (D<200 Mpc), and it is >50% complete in terms of the B-band luminosity density at distances in the 0-170 Mpc range. By incorporating and homogenising data from astronomical databases and multi-wavelength surveys, the catalogue offers positions, sizes, distances, morphological classifications, star-formation rates, stellar masses, metallicities, and nuclear activity classifications. This wealth of information can enable a wide-range of applications, such as: (i) demographic studies of extragalactic sources, (ii) initial characterisation of transient events, and (iii) searches for electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational-wave events. The analysis of individual X-ray sources that appear in a crowded field can easily be compromised by the misallocation of recorded events to their originating sources. Even with a small number of sources, that nonetheless have overlapping point spread functions, the allocation of events to sources is a complex task that is subject to uncertainty. We develop a Bayesian method designed to sift high-energy photon events from multiple sources with overlapping point spread functions, leveraging the differences in their spatial, spectral, and temporal signatures. The method probabilistically assigns each event to a given source. Such a disentanglement allows more detailed spectral or temporal analysis to focus on the individual component in isolation, free of contamination from other sources or the background. We are also able to compute source parameters of interest like their locations, relative brightness, and background contamination, while accounting for the uncertainty in event assignments. Simulation studies that include event arrival time information demonstrate that the temporal component improves event disambiguation beyond using only spatial and spectral information. The proposed methods correctly allocate up to 65% more events than the corresponding algorithms that ignore event arrival time information. We apply our methods to two stellar X-ray binaries, UV Cet and HBC515 A, observed with Chandra. We demonstrate that our methods are capable of removing the contamination due to a strong flare on UV Cet B in its companion approximately 40 times weaker during that event, and that evidence for spectral variability at timescales of a few ks can be determined in HBC515 Aa and HBC515 Ab.

Many astrophysical phenomena are time-varying, in the sense that their intensity, energy spectrum, and/or the spatial distribution of the emission suddenly change. This paper develops a method for modeling a time series of images. Under the assumption that the arrival times of the photons follow a Poisson process, the data are binned into 4D grids of voxels (time, energy band, and x-y coordinates), and viewed as a time series of non-homogeneous Poisson images. The method assumes that at each time point, the corresponding multi-band image stack is an unknown 3D piecewise constant function including Poisson noise. It also assumes that all image stacks between any two adjacent change points (in time domain) share the same unknown piecewise constant function. The proposed method is designed to estimate the number and the locations of all the change points (in time domain), as well as all the unknown piecewise constant functions between any pairs of the change points. The method applies the minimum description length (MDL) principle to perform this task. A practical algorithm is also developed to solve the corresponding complicated optimization problem. Simulation experiments and applications to real datasets show that the proposed method enjoys very promising empirical properties. Applications to two real datasets, the XMM observation of a flaring star and an emerging solar coronal loop, illustrate the usage of the proposed method and the scientific insight gained from it., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

We present a new method to extract statistical constraints on the progenitor properties and formation channels of individual gravitational-wave sources. Although many different models have been proposed to explain the binary black holes detected by the LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaboration (LVC), formation through isolated binary evolution remains the best explored channel. Under the assumption of formation through binary evolution, we use the statistical wrapper dart_board coupled with the rapid binary evolution code COSMIC to model the progenitor of GW150914, the first gravitational-wave signal detected by the LVC. Our Bayesian method combines the likelihood generated from the gravitational-wave signal with a prior describing the population of stellar binaries, and the Universe's star-formation and metallicity evolution. We find that the dominant evolutionary channel for GW150914 did not involve a common-envelope phase, but instead the system most probably (70%-90%) formed through stable mass transfer. This result is robust against variations of various model parameters, and it is reversed only when dynamical instability in binaries becomes more likely when a strict condition favoring common envelopes is adopted. We present detailed constraints on the metallicity dependence of the high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) X-ray luminosity function (XLF). We analyze ~5 Ms of Chandra data for 55 actively star-forming galaxies at D < 30 Mpc with gas-phase metallicities spanning 12 + log(O/H) = 7-9.2. Within the galactic footprints, our sample contains a total of 1311 X-ray point sources, of which ~49% are expected to be HMXBs, with the remaining sources likely to be low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs; ~22%) and unrelated background sources (~29%). We construct a model that successfully characterizes the average HMXB XLF over the full metallicity range. We demonstrate that the SFR-normalized HMXB XLF shows clear trends with metallicity, with steadily increasing numbers of luminous and ultraluminous X-ray sources (logL(erg/s) = 38-40.5) with declining metallicity. However, we find that the low-luminosity (logL(erg/s) = 36-38) HMXB XLF appears to show a nearly constant SFR scaling and slope with metallicity. Our model provides a revised scaling relation of integrated LX/SFR versus 12 + log(O/H) and a new characterization of its the SFR-dependent stochastic scatter. The general trend of this relation is broadly consistent with past studies based on integrated galaxy emission; however, our model suggests that this relation is driven primarily by the high-luminosity end of the HMXB XLF. Our results have implications for binary population synthesis models, the nature of super-Eddington accreting objects (e.g., ultraluminous X-ray sources), recent efforts to identify active galactic nucleus candidates in dwarf galaxies, and the X-ray radiation fields in the early Universe during the epoch of cosmic heating at z > 10., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a systematic study of the metallicity variations within the collisional ring galaxy NGC 922 based on long-slit optical spectroscopic observations. We find a metallicity difference between star-forming regions in the bulge and the ring, with metallicities ranging from almost solar to significantly sub-solar ($\rm{[12+\log(O/H)]\sim 8.2}$). We detect $\rm He\,_I$ emission in the bulge and the ring star-forming regions indicating ionization from massive stars associated with recent ($<10$ Myr) star-formation, in agreement with the presence of very young star-clusters in all studied regions. We find an anti-correlation between the X-ray luminosity and metallicity of the sub-galactic regions of NGC 922. The different regions have similar stellar population ages leaving metallicity as the main driver of the anti-correlation. The dependence of the X-ray emission of the different regions in NGC 922 on metallicity is in agreement with similar studies of the integrated X-ray output of galaxies and predictions from X-ray binary population models., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

Using the Chandra Source Catalog 2.0 and a newly compiled catalogue of galaxies in the local Universe, we deliver a census of ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) populations in nearby galaxies. We find 629 ULX candidates in 309 galaxies with distance smaller than 40\,Mpc. The foreground/background contamination is ${\sim}20\%$. The ULX populations in bona-fide star-forming galaxies scale on average with star-formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass ($M_\star$) such that the number of ULXs per galaxy is $0.45^{+0.06}_{-0.09}\times\frac{\rm SFR}{\rm M_\odot\,yr^{-1}}{+}3.3^{+3.8}_{-3.2}\times\frac{M_\star}{\rm M_\odot}$. The scaling depends strongly on the morphological type. This analysis shows that early spiral galaxies contain an additional population of ULXs that scales with $M_\star$. We also confirm the strong anti-correlation of the ULX rate with the host galaxy's metallicity. In the case of early-type galaxies we find that there is a non-linear dependence of the number of ULXs with $M_\star$, which is interpreted as the result of star-formation history differences. Taking into account age and metallicity effects, we find that the predictions from X-ray binary population synthesis models are consistent with the observed ULX rates in early-type galaxies, as well as, spiral/irregular galaxies., Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, 6 tables. eROSITA, launched on 13 July 2019, will be completing the first all-sky survey in the soft and medium X-ray band in nearly three decades. This 4-year survey, finishing in late 2023, will present a rich legacy for the entire astrophysics community and complement upcoming multi-wavelength surveys (with, e.g. the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and the Dark Energy Survey). Besides the major scientific aim to study active galactic nuclei (AGN) and galaxy clusters, eROSITA will contribute significantly to X-ray studies of normal (i.e., not AGN) galaxies. Starting from multi-wavelength catalogues, we measure star formation rates and stellar masses for 60 212 galaxies constrained to distances of 50-200 Mpc. We chose this distance range to focus on the relatively unexplored volume outside the local Universe, where galaxies will be largely spatially unresolved and probe a range of X-ray luminosities that overlap with the low luminosity and/or highly obscured AGN population. We use the most recent X-ray scaling relations as well as the on-orbit eROSITA instrument performance to predict the X-ray emission from XRBs and diffuse hot gas and to perform both an analytic prediction and an end-to-end simulation using the mission simulation software, SIXTE. We consider potential contributions from hidden AGN and comment on the impact of normal galaxies on the measurement of the faint end of the AGN luminosity function. We predict that the eROSITA 4-year survey, will detect $\gtrsim$ 15 000 galaxies (3 $\sigma$ significance) at 50-200 Mpc, which is ~100X more normal galaxies than detected in any X-ray survey to date., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures. X-ray luminosity ($L_X$) originating from high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) is tightly correlated with the host galaxy's star-formation rate (SFR). We explore this connection at sub-galactic scales spanning ${\sim}$7 dex in SFR and ${\sim}$8 dex in specific SFR (sSFR). There is good agreement with established relations down to ${\rm SFR {\simeq} 10^{-3}\,M_\odot \, yr^{-1}}$, below which an excess of X-ray luminosity emerges. This excess likely arises from low mass X-ray binaries. The intrinsic scatter of the $L_X$-SFR relation is constant, not correlated with SFR. Different star formation indicators scale with $L_X$ in different ways, and we attribute the differences to the effect of star formation history. The SFR derived from H$\alpha$ shows the tightest correlation with X-ray luminosity because H$\alpha$ emission probes stellar populations with ages similar to HMXB formation timescales, but the H$\alpha$-based SFR is reliable only for $\rm sSFR{>}10^{-12}\,M_\odot \, yr^{-1}/M_\odot$., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS (2020-04-19)

Over forty years of research suggests that the common envelope phase, in which an evolved star engulfs its companion upon expansion, is the critical evolutionary stage forming short-period, compact-object binary systems, such as coalescing double compact objects, X-ray binaries, and cataclysmic variables. In this work, we adapt the one-dimensional hydrodynamic stellar evolution code, MESA, to model the inspiral of a 1.4M$_{\odot}$ neutron star (NS) inside the envelope of a 12$M_{\odot}$ red supergiant star. We self-consistently calculate the drag force experienced by the NS as well as the back-reaction onto the expanding envelope as the NS spirals in. Nearly all of the hydrogen envelope escapes, expanding to large radii ($\sim$10$^2$ AU) where it forms an optically thick envelope with temperatures low enough that dust formation occurs. We simulate the NS orbit until only 0.8M$_{\odot}$ of the hydrogen envelope remains around the giant star's core. Our results suggest that the inspiral will continue until another $\approx$0.3M$_{\odot}$ are removed, at which point the remaining envelope will retract. Upon separation, a phase of dynamically stable mass transfer onto the NS accretor is likely to ensue, which may be observable as an ultraluminous X-ray source. The resulting binary, comprised of a detached 2.6M$_{\odot}$ helium-star and a NS with a separation of 3.3-5.7R$_{\odot}$, is expected to evolve into a merging double neutron-star, analogous to those recently detected by LIGO/Virgo. For our chosen combination of binary parameters, our estimated final separation (including the phase of stable mass transfer) suggests a very high $\alpha_{\rm CE}$-equivalent efficiency of $\approx$5., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, submitted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters. We present new Chandra constraints on the X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) of X-ray binary (XRB) populations, and their scaling relations, for a sample of 38 nearby galaxies (D = 3.4-29 Mpc). Our galaxy sample is drawn primarily from the Spitzer infrared nearby galaxy survey (SINGS), and contains a wealth of Chandra (5.8 Ms total) and multiwavelength data, allowing for star-formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses (M*) to be measured on subgalactic scales. We divided the 2478 X-ray detected sources into 21 subsamples in bins of specific-SFR (sSFR = SFR/M*) and constructed XLFs. To model the XLF dependence on sSFR, we fit a global XLF model, containing contributions from high-mass XRBs (HMXBs), low-mass XRBs (LMXBs), and background sources from the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) that respectively scale with SFR, M*, and sky area. We find an HMXB XLF that is more complex in shape than previously reported and an LMXB XLF that likely varies with sSFR, potentially due to an age dependence. When applying our global model to XLF data for each individual galaxy, we discover a few galaxy XLFs that significantly deviate from our model beyond statistical scatter. Most notably, relatively low-metallicity galaxies have an excess of HMXBs above ~10^38 erg/s and elliptical galaxies that have relatively rich populations of globular clusters (GCs) show excesses of LMXBs compared to the global model. The formation and evolution of double neutron stars (DNS) have traditionally been studied using binary population synthesis. In this work, we take an alternative approach by focusing only on the second supernova (SN) forming the DNS and the subsequent orbital decay and merger due to gravitational wave radiation. Using analytic and numerical methods, we explore how different NS natal kick velocity distributions, pre-SN orbital separations, and progenitor He-star masses affect the post-SN orbital periods, eccentricities, merger times, systemic velocities, and distances traveled by the system before merging. Comparison with the set of 17 known DNSs in the Milky Way shows that DNSs have pre-SN orbital separations ranging between 1 and 44 $R_{\odot}$. Those DNSs with pre-SN separations $\sim$1 $R_{\odot}$ have merger time distributions that peak $\sim$10-100 Myr after formation, regardless of the kick velocity received by the NS. These DNSs are typically formed with systemic velocities $\sim$10$^2$ km s$^{-1}$ and may travel $\sim$1-10 kpc before merging. Depending on progenitor mass of the second-born NS, the short merger time can account for the $r$-process enrichment observed in compact stellar systems such as ultra-faint dwarf galaxies. For Milky Way-mass galaxies only DNSs with the tightest pre-SN orbits and large kick velocities ($\gtrsim$10$^2$ km s$^{-1}$) can escape. However, those DNSs that do escape may travel as far as $\sim$Mpc before merging, which as previous studies have pointed out has implications for identifying the host galaxies to short gamma ray bursts and gravitational wave events., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the Spectroscopic Time-Resolving Observatory for Broadband Energy X-rays (STROBE-X), a probe-class mission concept selected for study by NASA. It combines huge collecting area, high throughput, broad energy coverage, and excellent spectral and temporal resolution in a single facility. STROBE-X offers an enormous increase in sensitivity for X-ray spectral timing, extending these techniques to extragalactic targets for the first time. It is also an agile mission capable of rapid response to transient events, making it an essential X-ray partner facility in the era of time-domain, multi-wavelength, and multi-messenger astronomy. Optimized for study of the most extreme conditions found in the Universe, its key science objectives include: (1) Robustly measuring mass and spin and mapping inner accretion flows across the black hole mass spectrum, from compact stars to intermediate-mass objects to active galactic nuclei. (2) Mapping out the full mass-radius relation of neutron stars using an ensemble of nearly two dozen rotation-powered pulsars and accreting neutron stars, and hence measuring the equation of state for ultradense matter over a much wider range of densities than explored by NICER. (3) Identifying and studying X-ray counterparts (in the post-Swift era) for multiwavelength and multi-messenger transients in the dynamic sky through cross-correlation with gravitational wave interferometers, neutrino observatories, and high-cadence time-domain surveys in other electromagnetic bands. (4) Continuously surveying the dynamic X-ray sky with a large duty cycle and high time resolution to characterize the behavior of X-ray sources over an unprecedentedly vast range of time scales. Ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) pulsars are a new class of object powered by apparent super-critical accretion onto magnetized neutron stars. Three sources in this class identified so far; M82 X-2, NGC 5907 ULX-1 and NGC 7793 P13, have been found to have two properties in common; $\sim1$-s spin periods, and for NGC 5907 ULX-1 and NGC 7793 P13 periodic X-ray flux modulations on timescales of $\sim60-80$ days. M82 X-2 resides in a crowded field that includes the ULX M82 X-1 separated from X-2 by 5", as well as other bright point sources. A 60-day modulation has been observed from the region but the origin has been difficult to identify; both M82 X-1 and X-2 have been suggested as the source. In this paper we present the analysis of a systematic monitoring campaign by Chandra, the only X-ray telescope capable of resolving the crowded field. From a simple Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis and a more sophisticated Gaussian Process analysis we find that only X-2 exhibits a periodic signal around 60 days supporting previous claims that it is the origin. We also construct a phase-averaged flux profile of the modulations from higher cadence Swift/XRT data and find that the flux variations in the Chandra data are fully consistent with the flux profile. Since the orbit of the neutron star and its companion is known to be 2.5 days, the $\sim60$-day period must be super-orbital in origin. The flux of the modulations varies by a factor of $\sim$100 from minimum to maximum, with no evidence for spectral variations, making the origin difficult to explain., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We have compiled the most complete census of High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) in the Small Magellanic Cloud with the aim to investigate the formation efficiency of young accreting binaries in its low metallicity environment. In total, we use 127 X-ray sources with detections in our \chandra X-ray Visionary Program (XVP), supplemented by 14 additional (likely and confirmed) HMXBs identified by \cite{2016A&A...586A..81H} that fall within the XVP area, but are not either detected in our survey (9 sources) or matched with any XVP source that has at least one OB counterpart in the OGLE-III catalog (5 sources). Specifically, we examine the number ratio of the HMXBs [N(HMXBs)] to {\it (a)} the number of OB stars, {\it (b)} the local star-formation rate (SFR), and {\it (c)} the stellar mass produced during the specific star-formation burst, all as a function of the age of their parent stellar populations. Each of these indicators serves a different role, but in all cases we find that the HMXB formation efficiency increases as a function of time (following a burst of star formation) up to $\sim$40--60\,Myr, and then gradually decreases. The peak formation efficiency N(HMXB)/SFR is (49 $\pm$ 14) $[10^{-5}~{\rm M_{\odot}/yr}]^{-1}$, in good agreement with previous estimates of the average formation efficiency in the broad $\sim$20--60\,Myr age range. The frequency of HMXBs is a factor of 8$\times$ higher than at $\sim$10\,Myr, and 4$\times$ higher than at $\sim$260\,Myr, i.e. at earlier and later epochs, respectively., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ, comments welcome

Nearby star-forming galaxies offer a unique environment to study the populations of young ($<$100 Myr) accreting binaries. These systems are tracers of past populations of massive stars that heavily affect their immediate environment and parent galaxies. Using a Chandra X-ray Visionary program, we investigate the young neutron-star binary population in the low metallicity of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) by reaching quiescent X-ray luminosity levels ($\sim$few times $10^{32}$ erg/s). We present the first measurement of the formation efficiency of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) as a function of the age of their parent stellar populations by using 3 indicators: the number ratio of HMXBs to OB stars, to the SFR, and to the stellar mass produced during the specific star-formation burst they are associated with. Almost all confirmed optical counterparts of HMXBs in the SMC are OB stars with equatorial decretion disks (OBe). These sources emit strongly in Balmer lines and standout when imaged through narrow-band H{\alpha} imaging. The lack of secure counterparts for a significant fraction of the HMXBs motivated us to search for more. Using the catalogs for OB/OBe stars (Maravelias et al. 2017) and for HMXBs (Haberl & Sturm 2016) we detect 70 optical counterparts (out of 104 covered by our survey). We provide the first identification of the optical counterpart to the source XTEJ0050-731. We verify that 17 previously uncertain optical counterparts are indeed the proper matches. Regarding 52 confirmed HMXBs (known optical counterparts with H{\alpha} emission), we detect 39 as OBe and another 13 as OB stars. We present nearly simultaneous NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations of the nearby (832 kpc) ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) M33 X-8. M33 X-8 has a 0.3-10 keV luminosity of LX ~ 1.4 x 10^39 erg/s, near the boundary of the "ultraluminous" classification, making it an important source for understanding the link between typical Galactic X-ray binaries and ULXs. Past studies have shown that the 0.3-10 keV spectrum of X-8 can be characterized using an advection-dominated accretion disk model. We find that when fitting to our NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations, an additional high-energy (>10 keV) Comptonization component is required, which allows us to rule out single advection-dominated disk and classical sub-Eddington models. With our new constraints, we analyze XMM-Newton data taken over the last 17 years to show that small (~30%) variations in the 0.3-10 keV flux of M33 X-8 result in spectral changes similar to those observed for other ULXs. The two most likely phenomenological scenarios suggested by the data are degenerate in terms of constraining the nature of the accreting compact object (i.e., black hole versus neutron star). We further present a search for pulsations using our suite of data; however, no clear pulsations are detected. Future observations designed to observe M33 X-8 at different flux levels across the full 0.3-30 keV range would significantly improve our constraints on the nature of this important source., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (15 pages, 4 tables, 6 figures)

Nearby galaxy surveys have long classified X-ray binaries (XRBs) by the mass category of their donor stars (high-mass and low-mass). The NuSTAR observatory, which provides imaging data at E $>10$ keV, has enabled the classification of extragalactic XRBs by their compact object type: neutron star (NS) or black hole (BH). We analyzed NuSTAR/Chandra/XMM-Newton observations from a NuSTAR-selected sample of 12 galaxies within 5 Mpc having stellar masses ($M_{\star}$) $10^{7-11}$ $M_{\odot}$ and star formation rates (SFR) $\approx0.01-15$ $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. We detect 128 NuSTAR sources to a sensitivity of $\approx10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Using NuSTAR color-intensity and color-color diagrams we classify 43 of these sources as candidate NS and 47 as candidate BH. We further subdivide BH by accretion states (soft, intermediate, and hard) and NS by weak (Z/Atoll) and strong (accreting pulsar) magnetic field. Using 8 normal (Milky Way-type) galaxies in the sample, we confirm the relation between SFR and galaxy X-ray point source luminosity in the 4-25 and 12-25 keV energy bands. We also constrain galaxy X-ray point source luminosity using the relation $L_{\rm{X}}=\alpha M_{\star}+\beta\text{SFR}$, finding agreement with previous work. The XLF of all sources in the 4-25 and 12-25 keV energy bands matches with the $\alpha=1.6$ slope for high-mass XRBs. We find that NS XLFs suggest a decline beginning at the Eddington limit for a 1.4 $M_{\odot}$ NS, whereas the BH fraction shows an approximate monotonic increase in the 4-25 and 12-25keV energy bands. We present an X-ray stacking analysis of $\sim$75,000 star-forming galaxies between $0.11.3$ exhibit a significant X-ray excess indicating nuclear emission. The AGN emission is strongly correlated with stellar mass but does not exhibit an additional correlation with SFR. The hardness ratios of the high-redshift stacks indicate that the AGN are substantially obscured ($N_{\mathrm{H}}\sim10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$). These obscured AGN are not identified by IRAC color selection and have $L_X\sim10^{41}-10^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$, consistent with accretion at an Eddington rate of $\sim10^{-3}$ onto $10^7-10^8 M_{\odot}$ black holes. We report the evidence for the anti-correlation between pulsed fraction (PF) and luminosity of the X-ray pulsar SXP 1323, found for the first time in a luminosity range $10^{35}$--$10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ from observations spanning 15 years. The phenomenon of a decrease in X-ray PF when the source flux increases has been observed in our pipeline analysis of other X-ray pulsars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). It is expected that the luminosity under a certain value decreases as the PF decreases due to the propeller effect. Above the propeller region, an anti-correlation between the PF and flux might occur either as a result of an increase in the un-pulsed component of the total emission or a decrease of the pulsed component. Additional modes of accretion may also be possible, such as spherical accretion and a change in emission geometry. At higher mass accretion rates, the accretion disk could also extend closer to the neutron star (NS) surface, where a reduced inner radius leads to hotter inner disk emission. We propose a new soft clustering scheme for classifying galaxies in different activity classes using simultaneously 4 emission-line ratios; log([NII ]/Ha), log([SII]/Ha), log([OI]/Ha) and log([OIII]/Hb). We fit 20 multivariate Gaussian distributions to the 4-dimensional distribution of these lines obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in order to capture local structures and subsequently group the multivariate Gaussian distributions to represent the complex multi-dimensional structure of the joint distribution of galaxy spectra in the 4 dimensional line ratio space. The main advantages of this method are the use of all four optical-line ratios simultaneously and the adoption of a clustering scheme. This maximises the available information, avoids contradicting classifications, and treats each class as a distribution resulting in soft classification boundaries and providing the probability for an object to belong to each class. We also introduce linear multi-dimensional decision surfaces using support vector machines based on the classification of our soft clustering scheme. This linear multi-dimensional hard clustering technique shows high classification accuracy with respect to our soft-clustering scheme.

Galaxy mergers are key events in galaxy evolution, often causing massive starbursts and fueling active galactic nuclei (AGN). In these highly dynamic systems, it is not yet precisely known how much starbursts and AGN respectively contribute to the total luminosity, at what interaction stages they occur, and how long they persist. Here we estimate the fraction of the bolometric infrared (IR) luminosity that can be attributed to AGN by measuring and modeling the full ultraviolet to far-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) in up to 33 broad bands for 24 merging galaxies with the Code for Investigating Galaxy Emission. In addition to a sample of 12 confirmed AGN in late-stage mergers, found in the $Infrared$ $Array$ $Satellite$ Revised Bright Galaxy Sample or Faint Source Catalog, our sample includes a comparison sample of 12 galaxy mergers from the $Spitzer$ Interacting Galaxies Survey, mostly early-stage. We perform identical SED modeling of simulated mergers to validate our methods, and we supplement the SED data with mid-IR spectra of diagnostic lines obtained with $Spitzer$ InfraRed Spectrograph. The estimated AGN contributions to the IR luminosities vary from system to system from 0% up to 91% but are significantly greater in the later-stage, more luminous mergers, consistent with what is known about galaxy evolution and AGN triggering., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures

By employing Monte Carlo random sampling, traditional binary population synthesis (BPS) offers a substantial improvement in efficiency over brute force, grid-based studies. Even so, BPS models typically require a large number of simulation realizations, a computationally expensive endeavor, to generate statistically robust results. Recent advances in statistical methods have led us to revisit the traditional approach to BPS. In this work we describe our publicly available code dart_board which combines rapid binary evolution codes, typically used in traditional BPS, with modern Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. dart_board takes a novel approach that treats the initial binary parameters and the supernova kick vector as model parameters. This formulation has several advantages, including the ability to model either populations of systems or individual binaries, the natural inclusion of observational uncertainties, and the flexible addition of new constraints which are problematic to include using traditional BPS. After testing our code with mock systems, we demonstrate the flexibility of dart_board by applying it to three examples: (i) a generic population of high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), (ii) the population of HMXBs in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in which the spatially resolved star formation history is used as a prior, and (iii) one particular HMXB in the LMC, Swift J0513.4-6547, in which we include observations of the system's component masses and orbital period. We report the timing analysis results of X-ray pulsars from a recent deep Chandra survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We have analyzed a total exposure of 1.4 Ms from 31 observations over a 1.2 deg$^2$ region in the SMC under a Chandra X-ray Visionary Program. Using the Lomb-Scargle and epoch folding techniques, we have detected periodic modulations from 20 pulsars and a new candidate pulsar. The survey also covers 11 other pulsars with no clear sign of periodic modulation. The 0.5-8 keV X-ray luminosity ($L_X$) of the pulsars ranges from $10^{34}$ to $10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at 60 kpc. All the Chandra sources with $L_X$ $\gtrsim 4 \times 10^{35}$ erg s$^{-1}$ exhibit X-ray pulsations. The X-ray spectra of the SMC pulsars (and high mass X-ray binaries) are in general harder than those of the SMC field population. All but SXP~8.02 can be fitted by an absorbed power-law model with a photon index of $\Gamma$ $\lesssim$ 1.5. The X-ray spectrum of the known magnetar SXP~8.02 is better fitted with a two-temperature blackbody model. Newly measured pulsation periods of SXP~51.0, SXP~214 and SXP~701 are significantly different from the previous XMM-Newton and RXTE measurements. This survey provides a rich data set for energy-dependent pulse profile modeling. Six pulsars show an almost eclipse-like dip in the pulse profile. Phase-resolved spectral analysis reveals diverse spectral variation during pulsation cycle: e.g., for an absorbed power-law model, some exhibit an (anti)-correlation between absorption and X-ray flux, while others show more intrinsic spectral variation., Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures, 11 tables, submitted to ApJ

The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) hosts a large number of high-mass X-ray binaries, and in particular of Be/X-ray Binaries (BeXRBs; neutron stars orbiting OBe-type stars), offering a unique laboratory to address the effect of metalicity. One key property of their optical companion is H{\alpha} in emission, which makes them bright sources when observed through a narrow-band H{\alpha} filter. We performed a survey of the SMC Bar and Wing regions using wide-field cameras (WFI@MPG/ESO and MOSAIC@CTIO/Blanco) in order to identify the counterparts of the sources detected in our XMM-Newton survey of the same area. We obtained broad-band R and narrow-band H{\alpha} photometry, and identified ~10000 H{\alpha} emission sources down to a sensitivity limit of 18.7 mag (equivalent to ~B8 type Main Sequence stars). We find the fraction of OBe/OB stars to be 13% down to this limit, and by investigating this fraction as a function of the brightness of the stars we deduce that H{\alpha} excess peaks at the O9-B2 spectral range. Located in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), SXP214 is an X-ray pulsar in a high mass X-ray binary system with a Be-star companion. A recent survey of the SMC under a Chandra X-ray Visionary program found the source in a transition when the X-ray flux was on a steady rise. The Lomb-Scargle periodogram revealed a pulse period of 211.49 +/- 0.42 s, which is significantly (>5sigma) shorter than the previous measurements with XMM-Newton and RXTE. This implies that the system has gone through sudden spin-up episodes recently. The pulse profile shows a sharp eclipse-like feature with a modulation amplitude of >95%. The linear rise of the observed X-ray luminosity from <~2x to 7x10^35 erg s^-1 is correlated with steady softening of the X-ray spectrum, which can be described by the changes in the local absorption from N_H ~ 10^24 to <~10^20 cm^-2 for an absorbed power-law model. The soft X-ray emission below 2 keV was absent in the early part of the observation when only the pulsating hard X-ray component was observed, whereas at later times both soft and hard X-ray components were observed pulsating. A likely explanation is that the neutron star was initially hidden in the circumstellar disk of the companion, and later came out of the disk with the accreted material that continued fueling the observed pulsation., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

In the present work we investigate the link between high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) and star formation in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), our nearest star-forming galaxy. Using optical photometric data, we identify the most likely counterpart of 44 X-ray sources. Among the 40 HMXBs classified in this work, we find 33 Be/X-ray binaries, and 4 supergiant XRBs. Using this census and the published spatially resolved star-formation history map of the LMC, we find that the HMXBs (and as expected the X-ray pulsars) are present in regions with star-formation bursts $\sim$6-25 Myr ago, in contrast to the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), for which this population peaks at later ages ($\sim$25-60 Myr ago). We also estimate the HMXB production rate to be equal to 1 system per $\sim43.5\times10^{-3}$ Mo/yr, or 1 system per $\sim$143 Mo of stars formed during the associated star-formation episode. Therefore, the formation efficiency of HMXBs in the LMC is $\sim$17 times lower than that in the SMC. We attribute this difference primarily in the different ages and metallicity of the HMXB populations in the two galaxies. We also set limits on the kicks imparted on the neutron star during the supernova explosion. We find that the time elapsed since the supernova kick is $\sim$3 times shorter in the LMC than the SMC. We present the results of a joint Swift-NuSTAR spectroscopy campaign on M31. We focus on the five brightest globular cluster X-ray sources in our fields. Two of these had previously been argued to be black hole candidates on the basis of apparent hard-state spectra at luminosities above those for which neutron stars are in hard states. We show that these two sources are likely to be Z-sources (i.e. low magnetic field neutron stars accreting near their Eddington limits), or perhaps bright atoll sources (low magnetic field neutron stars which are just a bit fainter than this level) on the basis of simultaneous Swift and NuSTAR spectra which cover a broader range of energies. These new observations reveal spectral curvature above 6-8 keV that would be hard to detect without the broader energy coverage the NuSTAR data provide relative to Chandra and XMM-Newton. We show that the other three sources are also likely to be bright neutron star X-ray binaries, rather than black hole X-ray binaries. We discuss why it should already have been realized that it was unlikely that these objects were black holes on the basis of their being persistent sources, and we re-examine past work which suggested that tidal capture products would be persistently bright X-ray emitters. We have studied high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) populations within two low-metallicity, starburst galaxies, Haro 11 and VV 114. These galaxies serve as analogs to high-redshift (z>2) Lyman break galaxies, and within the larger sample of Lyman break analogs (LBAs) are sufficiently nearby (<87 Mpc) to be spatially-resolved by Chandra. Previous studies of the X-ray emission in LBAs have found that the 2-10 keV luminosity per star formation rate (SFR) in these galaxies is elevated, potentially because of their low metallicities (12+log[O/H]= 8.3-8.4). Theoretically, the progenitors of XRBs forming in lower metallicity environments lose less mass from stellar winds over their lifetimes, producing more massive compact objects (i.e., neutron stars and black holes), and thus resulting in more numerous and luminous HMXBs per SFR. We have performed an in-depth study of the only two LBAs that have spatially-resolved 2-10 keV emission with Chandra to present the bright end of the X-ray luminosity distribution of HMXBs (L$_X>10^{39}$ erg/s; ultraluminous X-ray sources, ULXs) in these low-metallicity galaxies, based on 8 detected ULXs. Comparing with the star-forming galaxy X-ray luminosity function (XLF) presented by Mineo et al. (2012), Haro 11 and VV 114 host ~4 times more L$_X>10^{40}$ erg/s sources than expected given their SFRs. We simulate the effects of source blending from crowded lower luminosity HMXBs using the star-forming galaxy XLF and then vary the XLF shapes until we reproduce the observed point source luminosity distributions. We find that these LBAs have a shallower bright end slope than the standard XLF. If we conservatively assume that the brightest X-ray source from each galaxy is powered by an AGN rather than a HMXB and eliminate these sources from consideration, the luminosity distribution becomes poorly constrained but does appear to be consistent with a standard XLF. Spatially resolved kinematics have been used to determine the dynamical status of star-forming galaxies with ambiguous morphologies, and constrain the importance of galaxy interactions during the assembly of galaxies. However, measuring the importance of interactions or galaxy merger rates requires knowledge of the systematics in kinematic diagnostics and the visible time with merger indicators. We analyze the dynamics of star-forming gas in a set of binary merger hydrodynamic simulations with stellar mass ratios of 1:1 and 1:4. We find that the evolution of kinematic asymmetries traced by star-forming gas mirrors morphological asymmetries derived from mock optical images, in which both merger indicators show the largest deviation from isolated disks during strong interaction phases. Based on a series of simulations with various initial disk orientations, orbital parameters, gas fractions, and mass ratios, we find that the merger signatures are visible for ~0.2-0.4 Gyr with kinematic merger indicators but can be approximately twice as long for equal-mass mergers of massive gas-rich disk galaxies designed to be analogs of z~2-3 submillimeter galaxies. Merger signatures are most apparent after the second passage and before the black holes coalescence, but in some cases they persist up to several hundred Myr after coalescence. About 20-60% of the simulated galaxies are not identified as mergers during the strong interaction phase, implying that galaxies undergoing violent merging process do not necessarily exhibit highly asymmetric kinematics in their star-forming gas. The lack of identifiable merger signatures in this population can lead to an underestimation of merger abundances in star-forming galaxies, and including them in samples of star-forming disks may bias the measurements of disk properties such as intrinsic velocity dispersion., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, ApJ accepted

The Chandra Cygnus OB2 Legacy Survey is a wide and deep X-ray survey of the nearby and massive Cygnus OB2 association. The survey has detected ~8,000 X-ray sources, the majority of which are pre-main sequence X-ray emitting young stars in the association itself. To facilitate quantitative scientific studies of these sources as well as the underlying OB association it is important to understand the sensitivity of the observations and the level of completeness the observations have obtained. Here we describe the use of a hierarchical Monte Carlo simulation to achieve this goal by combining the empirical properties of the observations, analytic estimates of the source verification process, and an extensive set of source detection simulations. We find that our survey reaches a 90% completeness level for a pre-main-sequence population at the distance of Cyg OB2 at an X-ray luminosity of 4 x 10^30 ergs/s and a stellar mass of 1.3 Msun for a randomly distributed population. For a spatially clustered population such as Cyg~OB2 the 90% completeness level is reached at 1.1 Msun instead, as the sources are more concentrated in areas of our survey with a high exposure. These simulations can easily be adapted for use with other X-ray observations and surveys, and we provide X-ray detection efficiency curves for a very wide array of source and background properties to allow these simulations to be easily exploited by other users., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS as part of the special issue on the Chandra Cygnus OB2 Legacy Survey. 10 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. The recent discovery by Bachetti et al. (2014) of a pulsar in M82 that can reach luminosities of up to 10^40 ergs s^-1, a factor of ~100 the Eddington luminosity for a 1.4 Msol compact object, poses a challenge for accretion physics. In order to better understand the nature of this source and its duty cycle, and in the light of several physical models that have been subsequently published, we conduct a spectral and temporal analysis of the 0.5-8 keV X-ray emission from this source from 15 years of Chandra observations. We fit the Chandra spectra of the pulsar with a power-law model and a disk black body model, subjected to interstellar absorption in M82. We carefully assess for the effect of pile-up in our observations, where 4/19 observations have a pile-up fraction >10%, which we account for during spectral modeling with a convolution model. When fitted with a power-law model, the average photon index when the source is at high luminosity (L_X>10^39 ergs s^-1) is Gamma=1.33+/-0.15. For the disk black body model, the average temperature is T=3.24+/-0.65 keV, consistent with other luminous X-ray pulsars. We also investigated the inclusion of a soft excess component and spectral break, finding that the spectra are also consistent with these features common to luminous X-ray pulsars. In addition, we present spectral analysis from NuSTAR over the 3-50 keV range where we have isolated the pulsed component. We find that the pulsed emission in this band is best fit by a power-law with a high-energy cut-off, where Gamma=0.6+/-0.3 and E_C=14^{+5}_{-3} keV. While the pulsar has previously been identified as a transient, we find from our longer-baseline study that it has been remarkably active over the 15-year period, where for 9/19 (47%) observations that we analyzed, the pulsar appears to be emitting at a luminosity in excess of 10^39 ergs s^-1, greater than 10 times its Eddington limit., Comment: Accepted for publication by ApJ

(abridged) The majority of star-forming galaxies follow a simple empirical correlation in the star formation rate (SFR) versus stellar mass ($M_*$) plane, usually referred to as the star formation Main Sequence (MS). Here we combine a set of hydro-dynamical simulations of interacting galactic disks with state-of-the-art radiative transfer codes to analyze how the evolution of mergers is reflected upon the properties of the MS. We present \textsc{Chiburst}, a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) code that fits the multi-wavelength, broad-band photometry of galaxies and derives stellar masses, star formation rates, and geometrical properties of the dust distribution. We apply this tool to the SEDs of simulated mergers and compare the derived results with the reference output from the simulations. Our results indicate that changes in the SEDs of mergers as they approach coalescence and depart from the MS are related to an evolution of dust geometry in scales larger than a few hundred parsecs. This is reflected in a correlation between the specific star formation rate (sSFR), and the compactness parameter $\mathcal{C}$, that parametrizes this geometry and hence the evolution of dust temperature ($T_{\rm{dust}}$) with time. As mergers approach coalescence, they depart from the MS and increase their compactness, which implies that moderate outliers of the MS are consistent with late-type mergers. By further applying our method to real observations of Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs), we show that the merger scenario is unable to explain these extreme outliers of the MS.
