Dünyada enerji kaynaklarının rastgele dağılmış olması, yükselen enerji fiyatları, küresel ısınma ve iklim değişikliği gibi çevresel sorunlar, yakın gelecekte fosil yakıtların tükenecek olması, bu enerji kaynaklarının çevre ve insan sağlığı üzerindeki etkileri, yabancı kaynaklara ve az sayıda enerji zengini ülkeye bağımlılık sebebiyle ülkeler farklı enerji kaynaklarına yönelmiştir. Uranyumu yakıt olarak kullanan nükleer enerji üretimi Türkiye için alternatif bir kaynak olarak ele alınmaktadır. Türkiye’nin kanıtlanmış uranyum rezervi 32.4 kiloton olup, halen uranyum içerebilecek havzaların araştırılması devam etmektedir. Bu kapsamda, Pliyo-Miyosen genişlemeli rejim sonucu gelişen Dinar (Afyonkarahisar, Batı Anadolu) kömür oluşumları ekonomik açıdan önem arz edebilecek uranyum içerikleri bakımından ilgi çekebilmektedir. Çeşitli derinliklerden ve 5 sondaj kuyusundan toplam 17 adet kömür numunesi alınmıştır. Bu numunelerin uranyum içeriklerinin 1065 μg/g mertebelerine kadar çıktığı görülmüştür. Havzada mevcut olan uranyumun, kömürleşme süreci ve kömür tabakalarının üzerinin volkanoklastik sedimanlar tarafından örtülmesinden sonra, hidrotermal akışkanlar ile karışan yeraltı sularının etkisiyle katmanlı epijenetik köken modeline uygun şekilde oluştuğu düşünülmektedir. Ayrıca, yüksek uranyum içeriğinin, linyit damarlarının üst katmanlarında yoğunlaşması sebebiyle havza diğer epijenetik linyit oluşumları ile benzerlik göstermektedir., Random distribution of energy resources in the world, rapidly increasing energy prices, environmental problems such as global warming and climate change, the depletion of fossil fuels in the near future and their negative impact on the environment and human health, increasing dependence on foreign energy, limited energy resources of big consumer countries and being dependent on a small number of specific countries lead states to seek various sources of energy. The uranium fuel-based nuclear energy generation is an alternative energy source for Turkey. Proven uranium reserves in Turkey are 32.4 kt and exploration of sedimentary basins for uranium mineralization still continues. In this context, Dinar (Afyonkarahisar, western Turkey) coal occurences can attract attention for economic possibilities of uranium related with Plio-Miocene aged extensional tectonic regime. A total of 17 coal samples were collected for analyses from five boreholes at various depths. The uranium contents of studied coals are up to 1065 μg/g. The origin of the uranium in this basin are considered as a stratal epigenetic origin, which the uranium was introduced in the coal after coalification and consolidation of the enclosing sediments by ground water deriving uranium from hydrothermal sources or from unconformably overlying volcanic rocks. In addition, it can be highlighted that the higher contents of uranium occur in the upper parts of the stratigraphically highest lignite beds, which is compatible with other epigenetic lignite deposits.

Magmatic Suite around Uludag Massif contains some alkaline (A-type or highly fractionated felsic I-type) granites that developed in post-collisional plate tectonic conditions. Their genesis involved by Eocene calc-alkaline and Oligocene strongly peraluminous granite magmatism. Their emplacement is linked to strike-slip shear movements and/or extension that occur after the Neo-Tethys collisional events. These granites are spatially related to the Izmir-Ankara Suture Zone (IASZ). The majority of these alkaline granites are formed by middle or lower crustal anatexis, extracted melt restite of I-type granites. Previously non-melted mafic meta-tonalites are considered to represent their source rocks. The mechanism for the required high melting temperatures will be well explained by our new model. However, models based on partial delamination of the base of the lithosphere or asthenospheric upwelling due to steepening and breaking of the subducted Tethyan oceanic slab are still consistent. As is the case for many well-known post-collisional regimes, transpressional to transtensional and/or moderately extensional tectonism predominates throughout to region. Although crustal thickening does not appear evident as in the notable arcs and microcontinent collisions, uplifting of particular regions associated with post-collisional calc-alkaline granite emplacement is observable. Understanding the nature of post-collisional highly fractionated granites around Uludag will extend the view of how Western Anatolia was affected by Alpine Orogeny in the Tethyan Realm. The challenge is drawing the geochemistry line for the tectono-magmatic setting between post-collision to post-orogenic. Describing the nature of alkaline magmatism through late-stage orogeny to intra-plate setting may need to be more precise because of trace elements' overprinting. However, a holistic view of the magmatism and source rocks points out a synchronous crustal growth and crustal rework. Our new possible geodynamic scenario suggests crust–mantle decoupling combined with slab retreat results in thinning of the lithospheric mantle. The 75-80 km decoupling depth calculated from obducted blueschists of Tavsanlı Zone confirms the plate motions controlled thermal relaxation temperature is enough at the base of the lithosphere for the geotherm-induced magma generation for the Tavsanlı Zone.

Vanadium (V), is primarily used in the production of metal alloys (in addition to high strength low alloy properties) and reinforcing titanium alloys, take notice in the current critical element list by organizations such as the European Union and USGS. There is no detailed study on the exploration of vanadium resources in Turkey. Recently, vanadium can be extracted from several different types of mineral deposits and from fossil fuels. Black shales can be considered as one of the vanadium resources recently. Black shales are fine-grained sedimentary rocks containing not only in organic matter but also in specific trace elements, like V, Mo, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, Se, Pb and U.The study area is located in the Karabük – Kastamonu in Black Sea region of Turkey and primarily consist of Silurian aged black shales. These black shales can be described as a Hercynian continental sliver, which represents the northernmost part of the Western Pontides . This study focuses on revealing the content and major controlling factor of V of Late Silurian-Early Devonian aged black shales in the northwestern Black Sea Region of Turkey. In the end, the depositional model was established. Studied black shales have a wide range of vanadium content, varying from 74 to 400 μg/g. It can be stated that authigenic enrichments in modern suboxic settings, and likely represent the removal of dissolved V as V(IV). V(IV) was adsorped by organic matter. This result is also supported by several redox indicators such as V systematics (V/Sc, V/Ni) as well as ratios of Ni/Co, Th/U, and Mo/Mn. The reducing of V(III), is mainly associated with the excessive H2S accumulation in sediments and bottom waters and strong reducing conditions is also a key factor. In this circumstance, the decoupling mechanism of V changes from surface adsorption to ionic substitution forming solid solution series with Al in clays. In addition, the Al−Fe−Mn discriminant diagram of siliceous rocks, show that the genesis of siliceous rocks are close to the biogenic origin. The moderate positive correlation of V vs. TOC (R2=0.52) crossplot and the lack of correlation of V vs. clay-forming elements (Al2O3, K2O, Na2O, and CaO) mean that the organic matter rather than clay minerals can play a role in V enrichments. Also, it means that water conditions were controlled by elevated organic matter flux and consequent oxygen drawdown. Nevertheless, the discreteness of data in cross-plot diagrams may imply that a portion of the V in the samples occurs in other forms in addition to occurring in relation to organic matter. The Ozvatan carbonatite complex is located on the Eastern Part of the Central Anatolia, Turkey and host considerable Light Rare Earth Elements (LREE) mineralizations. The carbonatites in Ozvatan complex are mostly coarse grained calcio-carbonatites (sövites) with fluorites and minor opaque minerals. The carbonatites were intruded into silica undersaturated nepheline syenites and caused an intense fenitization process. The calcio-carbonatites of the study are were predominantly enriched in terms of La (up to 995 ppm), Ce (up to 1386 ppm) and Nd (up to 211 ppm). Also some of the LILE’s are enriched including Sr (up to 2%) and Ba (up to 0.75) as expected. The stable δ13CV-PDB and δ18OV-SMOW values of the Ozvatan carbonatites represent fractional crystallization and hydrothermal alteration trends. The δ13C values (-6.0 – 4.1 ‰) are generally in tune with worldwide carbonatite range. However, it cannot be concluded as a primary ignous carbonatitic melt due to relatively high δ13CV-PDB values. The δ18O values (13.3 – 49.3 ‰) are also high mostly cauesed by the high intensity hydrothermal activities (fenitization) or the contamination of meta-carbonate basement rocks. Overall, it can be stated that the, carbonatites of the Ozvatan are products of fractionation of a carbonated silicate melt, low temprature metasomatism and crustal contamination. Carbonatite complexes and associated fenite zones are famous for their high-grade rare metal ores. The carbonatite–fenite complexes generally contain high concentrations of light rare earth elements (LREE), thorium (Th), and uranium (U). While most carbonatites are closely related to continental rift zones, some complexes can be observed in post-collisional tectonic environments. The Özvatan nepheline syenite–carbonatite complex is an example of post-collisional carbonatitic magmatism in Central Anatolia, Turkey. The magmatic suite is generally composed of silica-undersaturated ultra-alkaline rocks and carbonatite dikes accompanied by high-intensity fenite zones. The carbonatites of the complex are generally dominated by coarse-grained calcite minerals accompanied by fluorite phenocrysts and may also contain minor amounts of rock-forming silicate minerals. The metasomatic aureole zones (fenites) are mainly composed of euhedral nephelines, K-feldspars, aegirines, augites, and garnets. Carbonatites of the Özvatan complex show enrichments in Ca and F with depletion of alkaline (K and Na) elements. Carbonatites and fenite zones of the Özvatan complex host a variety of incompatible elements, including La, Ce, Nd, Th, U, and Nb. The isotopic composition and general geochemical properties of carbonatites in the study area represent mantle-derived carbonatites rather than crustal limestones/skarns.

In the last five decades, Rare Earth Elements (REE) are mostly produced from carbonatite complexes and alkaline magmatic environments. In this respect, pyroclastic flows produced by the potassic-alkaline Golcuk volcanism in the Isparta (SW, Turkey) angle stand out as an important target area where REE enrichments can be observed. This study focuses on the REE potential, geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of REE-bearing minerals as well as formation modeling of unconsolidated pyroclastic flows in Daridere-Direkli-Yakaoren (DDY) deposits in Turkey. REE-bearing minerals of DDY deposits which contain abundant trachytic-trachyandesitic rock fragments were determined as fluorapatite, britholite, and chevkinite by using XRD and SEM-EDX analyses. According to the geochemical analysis, the vast majority of sigma REE (up to 996 ppm) content is LREE such as La, Ce and Nd. Daridere is the most REE enriched region followed by Yakaoren and Direkli regions in terms of LREE (574.9 ppm), relative to MREE (38.5 ppm) and HREE (5.28 ppm) contents. These results are also on par with subduction-related Italian extrusive carbonatites such as Polino, Cupaello and San Venenzo. The DDY deposits can also be comparable with intraplate extrusive REE deposits in terms of LREE enrichments, however, HREE, Nb, Th and Zr values are generally lower. The sigma REE concentrations tend to rise with the increasing contents of alkaline elements (Na and K), HFSE (such as Nb and U), as well as LILE (Ba, Sr and Rb) and are negatively affected by sedimentary carbonate involvement. The economic value of the DDY deposits can gain importance due to the increasing global demand for LREE's.

This study used a range of integrated and complementary experiments to examine pore-structure, fluid-shale wetting characteristics, sample size-dependent porosity towards different fluids, and imbibition behavior, as well as the relationships between these properties and the mineralogy of Silurian mudstones in the Central Taurides of Turkey. Working with different sample-sizes, the experiments consisted of helium pycnometry, low-pressure nitrogen physisorption isotherm, mercury intrusion porosimetry, fluid immersion porosimetry, liquid displacement, fluid droplet wettability and contact angle measurements, and spontaneous imbibition of fluids; four fluids with different hydrophilicity were used to assess the characteristics of fluid-shale interaction and its influence on pore-structure. Results show that studied mudstones can be grouped into three rock types: siliceous, carbonate-dominated, and mixed mudstones. Siliceous and mixed mudstones have higher porosities, pore-throat diameters, surface areas and tortuosities than the carbonate-dominated mudstones, regardless of sample sizes and fluids used. With low permeabilities and medium pore-throat sizes for the siliceous and mixed mudstones, the wettability and imbibition results show that these mudstones are both oil-wet and moderately-to-high water-wet. In contrast, the carbonate-dominated mudstones exhibit oil-wet characteristics. These results indicate that studied siliceous and mixed mudstones in the Central Taurides seem to have appropriate petrophysical properties in the context of reservoir quality.

Essexites of Kestanbol pluton have significant amount of iron (Fe), titanium (Ti), Rare Earth Elements (REE) and thorium (Th) and considered as the source of Geyikli Heavy Mineral Sands (HMS). Geyikli HMS were enriched by the minerals of magnetite, rutile, monazite and apatite. In Geyikli HMS, REE contents (up to 0,25%) were rised by 4-5 times during placer deposition, mainly caused by the enriching of weathering resistant REE bearing dense phosphate minerals and zircon. On the other hand, Fe (up to 11%) and Ti (up to 2,5%) enrichments are heavily dependent on the magnetite, titanomagnetite and rutile minerals. By using the basic physical mineral processing techniques such sieving, shaking tables, multi gravity seperators, magnetic seperation, it is possible to reach higher grades for both REE and Fe-Ti and to have better initial values for electrochemical mineral processing techniques.

In this study, Hallaçlar Volcanites located in Bayramiç-Çanakkale region were evaluated in terms of strategic element contents. Mineralogical-petrographical and geochemical investigations were carried out on the samples which were taken from the outcrops with intense hydrothermal alteration. The stratigraphy of the study area consists of the Sütüven Formation (Kazdağı Metamorfites), Çetmi Ophiolitic Melange, Evciler Pluton and Hallaçlar Volcanites. The intensity of hydrothermal alterations gradually increases in Hallaçlar Volcanites towards to the ophiolitic rocks and the Evciler Pluton. As a result of the geochemical analyzes carried out, it was observed that the yttrium (Y), zirconium (Zr), thorium (Th), tin (Sn) and antimony (Sb) elements were enriched in the Hallaçlar volcanites. It can be concluded that these elements were enriched in the volcanites with the hydrothermal solutions leaching from the elder metamorphic rocks., Yapılan çalışmada Bayramiç-Çanakkale bölgesinde bulunan Hallaçlar Volkanitleri stratejik element içerikleri açısından değerlendirilmiştir. Arazi çalışmaları sırasında özellikle yoğun hidrotermal alterasyon gözlemlenen kayaçlardan alınan örnekler üzerinde mineralojik-petrografik ve jeokimyasal incelemeler yapılmıştır. Çalışma alanının stratigrafisi Kazdağı metamorfitlerine ait Sütüven Formasyonu, Çetmi Ofiyolitik Melanjı, Evciler Plütonu ve Hallaçlar Volkanitleri’nden oluşmaktadır. Hallaçlar Volkanitleri’nin Ofiyolitik kayaçlar ve Evciler Plütonu dokanaklarında yoğun hidrotermal alterasyonların geliştiği ve bu alterasyonların özellikle ofiyolitik kayaçlara daha yakın olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Gerçekleştirilen jeokimyasal analizler sonucunda ise itriyum (Y), zirkonyum (Zr), toryum (Th), kalay (Sn) ve antimon (Sb) elementlerinin Hallaçlar volkanitleri içerisinde zenginleştiği görülerek, bu elementlerin metamorfik kayaçlar bünyesinden yıkanarak hidrotermal çözeltiler vasıtasıyla volkanitlerin içerisinde zenginleştiği kanısına varılmıştır.

Peraluminous alaskites are a common phenomenon in the migmatitic domes with anatectic cores. They are geochemically unique in terms of the U-Th mineralization and present critical significance in order to better understand the orogenic crustal processes. Western Anatolia was an orogenic welt in the latest Eocene, following the continental collision between Sakarya Continent and Tauride-Anatolide platform along the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan suture zone. Çataldağ metamorphic core complex (ÇMCC) is located on the immediate north of the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan suture zone, in Sakarya Continent. ÇMCC consists of Eo-Oligocene peraluminous anatectic leucogranites, corresponding to the partial melts of the young orogenic crust with a thickness of ≥50 km. Some of these leucogranites can be classified as alaskitic granite due to the presence of high Th content, from 12.5 to 113 ppm and relatively high ionizing radiation dose, up to 0.35 μsv/h. These alaskitic granites made up of quartz (30-35%) + plagioclase (25-30%) + K-feldspar (20-22%) + muscovite (5%) + biotite (5-3%) + monazite (≤1%) ± garnet. Th content in the alaskitic granites increases with increasing degrees of partial melting. Th enrichment in Çataldağ alaskitic granites is possibly hosted by monazite with high saturation temperature (≥770°C). Th-rich alaskitic granites in ÇMCC were derived from the partial melting of the Tauride-Anatolide Platform (Pan-African crust) underthrusted beneath the Sakarya Continent.

This work studies the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of beach sand sediments of southwestern Black Sea, Turkey which cover approximately 20 km2 area. The study area has 4 main geological units: Upper Cretaceous moderately-K kalkalkaline Istanbul volcanics, Oligocene Danismen Formation which is dominated by flood plain, marshy and lake environments, Upper Miocene-Pliocene Belgrad Formation which is dominated by terrestrial deposits, mostly gravel, sand and clay dominated and Quaternary formations which include sandy beaches, sand dunes and river alluvials.A total of 8 beach sand samples were analyzed by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Fluorecance (XRF). Mineralogical compositions are mainly dominated by quartz, siderite, albite, calcite and minor amount of magnetite. Siderite-rich beach sands are observed in western part of the study area and mostly derived from Danismen Formation. Fe2O3 contents of this area are determined up to 40%. On the other hand, in eastern part of the study area REE-Th-U content of beach sands are relatively higher than source rocks which is defined as a high-Al moderately-K kalkalkaline felsic rocks. The highest HFSE concentration were determined in -250+125µm fraction which consists of 16.5% of eastern beach sand. In this fraction LREE-Zr-U content rise drastically. It can be considered that REE-LREE contents is related with monazite minerals and U contents is related with zircon minerals, considering the monazite and zircon minerals are resistant to weathering and likely to occur in the orthomagmatic phase in the source volcanics.Key words: Beach sand sediments; REE-Th-U; heavy minerals; southwestern of Black Sea; Turkey

This study is carried out for delineation of the Tepeoba porphyry-skarn Cu-Mo ± Au mineralized zones at the Biga peninsula (NW Turkey) using the concentration–volume (C–V) fractal model. The power-law C–V relationships of Cu, Mo, and Au reveal five mineralized zones of Cu, three zones of Mo, and five zones for gold in the Tepeoba deposit. The main phase of the mineralization has average ore grades of 0.257% Cu, 0.357% Mo and 5.3083 ppm Au. Cu–Mo sulfide-rich hypogene ore zone overlain by mineralized oxidation zone are encompassed by three main alteration types, which are represented by biotite ± muscovite-K-feldspar, actinolite-albite and outer chlorite-epidote-calcite mineral associations occurring within the porphyritic microgranite and hornfels in the mine area. The delineated mineralization trend, based on the C–V fractal model, suggested that Cu and Mo enrichment zones were controlled by the same geochemical processes in the deposit due to their similar trends with the C–V log-log plot. Cu and Mo occurred mainly within the breccia zones along with stockwork veining at the contact between the hornfels and the biotite (±muscovite)-K-feldspar-altered Eybek microgranite. The main mineralization zone of Au developed in the oxidation zone due to of supergene enrichment processes.

The study area is located between Isparta and Burdur cities in Turkey, in an area of 350 km2. According to sulfur isotope (δ34S) data of samples calculated δ34S (‰) values are between 0.0447-0.0449 and the variation range [Δ(δ34S)] is 7.7. These values suggest a genetic environment that suitable for shale formation. When it was examined the volcanic rocks in the region, it has shown that the rocks were quite poor in point of sulphide ores, it has been found Triassic bituminous shale, oil seepages in vicinity. Previous researchers asserted that the sulfur must have been originated from the volcanism. However, isotopic and geochemical analyses, detailed field surveys of volcanic rocks suggest that the sulfur has organic origin and may have occurred in shale environment. It is thought that the sulfur may have been thrusted to the surface by hydrothermal water and gas in the end of the volcanism.

The Silurian-age organic-rich and organic-lean shales, located within Aydincik, Gulnar and Silifke districts of Mersin province in central Taurides, southern Turkey, is considered as an unconventional resources. These organic-rich and -lean shales are controlled by the similar geological, tectonic and sedimentary processes, as the passive margin basin has acted as the provenance region throughout the deposition of these shales. Geochemical data of major and trace elements obtained for a total of 39 outcrop samples were interpreted to determine the depositional model, water column productivity, amount of organic matter and preservation conditions. Total organic carbon (TOC) values of these organic-rich and -lean shales range from 0.56 to 4.06 wt. % and 0.01 to 0.38 wt. %. Several redox indicators, such as V systematics (V/Sc, V/Ni) as well as ratios of Ni/Co, Th/U and Mo/Mn, showed that the organic-rich shales were deposited in suboxic to anoxic environments, as opposed to oxic-dysoxic conditions for organic-lean ones. However, organic matter enrichment is not restrained by water column productivity, as indicated by a lack of correlation between TOC and productivity indexes (P/Ti and Ba/Al), but rather probably controlled by dysoxic-anoxic water column environment. In addition, a detrital material input cannot be ignored for its influence on organic matter enrichment in the shale deposition. The increase in the clastic fluxes probably resulted from the deposition in the extended shelf with coastal upwelling. A lack of correlation between K2O, Al2O3, SiO2 and TOC contents among these shales imply that clay minerals may not influence organic matter preservation. According to w(La)N/w(Yb)N and ΣREE values, a high sedimentation rate is determined during the shale deposition, which would result in a dilution of organic matter. Furthermore, slight marine influences with sulphur limitation and low salinity, semi-arid/warm to humid-warm climatic conditions are widespread, according to total sulphur (TS), Sr/Ba, Sr/Cu, chemical index of alteration (CIA), C-value and related discrimination diagrams. In the end, a depositional model of the central Taurides shales is established to display an excellent preservation condition as the major controlling factor for organic matter enrichment in the Silurian shales.

Eocene bituminous shales within the Camalan Formation of Paleocene-Eocene aged Kizilcay Group exposing around Tekirler (Nallihan, Ankara), central Anatolia, were deposited under oxic and suboxic redox conditions and have Corg values in the range of 2.37 to 12.42 wt% (average 6.32 wt%). Samples are represented by Type-I kerogen and their maturity level is immature-early mature. Eocene bituminous shales are enriched in some major and trace elements, such as Ca, Mg, Si, Na, K, V, Ni, U, Th, P, S, Mo, Cu, Zn, Cr, Co, Pb, Au, Ag, As, Re, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Li, Sm, and Y. Paleoredox indicators (e.g., V/(V+Ni), Ni/Co, U/Th, V/Sc, Mo/Mn) yield that Eocene bituminous shales were mostly deposited oxic–suboxic conditions.

The major and trace element component of 48 recent sediment samples in three distinct intervals (0–10, 10–20, and 20–30 cm) from Lake Acıgöl is described to present the current contamination levels and grift structure of detrital and evaporate mineral patterns of these sediments in this extreme saline environment. The spatial and vertical concentrations of major oxides were not uniform in the each subsurface interval. However, similar spatial distribution patterns were observed for some major element couples, due mainly to the detrital and evaporate origin of these elements. A sequential extraction procedure including five distinct steps was also performed to determine the different bonds of trace elements in the < 60-µ particulate size of recent sediments. Eleven trace elements (Ni, Fe, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, As, Co, Cr, Al and Mn) in nine surface and subsurface sediment samples were analyzed with chemical partitioning procedures to determine the trace element percentage loads in these different sequential extraction phases. The obtained accuracy values via comparison of the bulk trace metal loads with the total loads of five extraction steps were satisfying for the Ni, Fe, Cd, Zn, and Co.
