Summary Background Ethiopia reported the first case of COVID-19 on 13th March, 2020 with community transmission ensuing by mid-May. A national, population-based serosurvey against anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG was conducted to measure the prevalence of prior COVID-19 infections and better approximate the burden across major towns in Ethiopia. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional, population-based serosurvey from June 24 to July 8, 2020 in 14 major urban areas. Two-stage cluster sampling was used to randomly select enumeration areas and households. All persons aged ≥15 years were enrolled. Serum samples were tested by Abbott™ ARCHITECT™ assay for SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies. National COVID-19 surveillance data on the median date of the serosurvey is analyzed for comparison. Findings Adjusted seroprevalence was 3.5% (95% CI: 3.2%-3.8%) after controlling for age, sex and test kit performance. Males (3.7%) and females (3.3%) were nearly equally infected, while middle-aged adults '40-65 years' had the highest (4.0%) prevalence. Gambella (7.5%), Dire Dawa (6.2%) and Jigjiga (6.1%) were the most affected towns. About 6.7% and 8.0% of seropositives had symptoms and chronic underlying illness, respectively. A surveillance system had identified 4,416 RT-PCR confirmed cases in Addis Ababa. Interpretation This serosurvey shows that a majority of urban Ethiopians remain uninfected with SARS-CoV-2. Most anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG positive cases were asymptomatic with no underlying illness, keeping case detection to a minimum.

Background The COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching effects on the mental health of populations around the world, but there has been limited focus on the impact on people with existing mental health conditions. The aim of this study was to examine impact of the pandemic on mental health care and people with mental health conditions in Ethiopia. Methods A convergent mixed methods study was conducted. We systematically mapped information from publicly available reports on impacts of the pandemic on mental health care. Monthly service utilisation data were obtained for the main psychiatric hospital and analysed using segmented linear regression (2019 vs. 2020). In-depth interviews were conducted with 16 purposively selected key informants. Framework analysis was used for qualitative data. Findings from each data source were integrated. Results Despite national level recognition of mental health as a key aspect of pandemic response, this was not translated into action on the ground initially. Mental health-related stigma and discrimination was evident. Scarce mental health service settings were diverted to become COVID-19 treatment centres. Mental health care became narrowly biomedical with poorer quality of care due to infrequent follow-up. Households of people with pre-existing mental health conditions in the community reported worsening poverty and decreased access to care due to restricted movement, decreased availability and fear. Lack of reliable medication supplies increased relapse and the chance of becoming chained at home, abandoned or homeless. Caregiver burden was exacerbated. Within mental health facilities, prisons and residential units, infection control procedures did not adequately safeguard those with mental health conditions. Meanwhile, the needs of people with mental health conditions in COVID-19 quarantine and treatment facilities were systematically neglected. Only late in the day were integrated services developed to address both physical and mental health needs. Conclusions The COVID-19 pandemic had substantial negative impacts on the lives of people with mental health conditions in Ethiopia. Future emergency response should prioritise the human rights, health, social and economic needs of people with mental health conditions. Integration of mental and physical health care would both expand access to care and increase resilience of the mental health system.

Background. Chikungunya virus is a ribonucleic acid (RNA) virus transmitted by a mosquito bite. Chikungunya virus outbreaks are characterized by rapid spread, and the disease manifests as acute fever. This study aimed at determining risk factors for chikungunya virus outbreak to apply appropriate prevention and control measures. Methods. Unmatched case-control study was performed to identify risk factors of chikungunya outbreak in Somali region of Ethiopia in 2019. Cases and controls were enrolled with 1 : 2 ratio. All cases during the study period (74 cases) and 148 controls were included in the study. Bivariate and multivariable analyses were implemented. The serum samples were tested by real-time polymerase chain reaction at Ethiopian Public Health Institute Laboratory. Results. A total of 74 chikungunya fever cases were reported starting from 19th May 2019 to 8th June 2019. Not using bed net at daytime sleeping (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 20.8; 95% confidence interval (CI): 6.4–66.7), presence of open water holding container (AOR: 4.0; CI: 1.2–3.5), presence of larvae in water holding container (AOR: 4.8; CI: 1.4–16.8), ill person with similar signs and symptoms in the family or neighbors (AOR: 27.9; CI: 6.5–120.4), and not wearing full body cover clothes (AOR: 8.1; CI: 2.2–30.1) were significant risk factors. Conclusion. Not using bed net at daytime sleeping, presence of open water holding container, presence of larvae in water holding container, ill person with similar signs and symptoms in the family or neighbors, and not wearing full body cover clothes are risk factors for chikungunya virus outbreak.

Rubella is a highly contagious mild viral illness. It is a leading cause of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Routine data of rubella do not exist in Ethiopia. However, laboratory-based conformation of rubella cases from measles negative samples were collected from a measles surveillance system. The current study was to analyse the epidemiological distribution of rubella cases from measles-suspected cases in Ethiopia from 2011 to 2015. National-based secondary data analysis of rubella through measles-based surveillances was carried out. Measles-suspected cases were investigated using the case investigation form, and a serum sample collected and sent to the Ethiopian laboratory for conformation. Samples tested for measles immunoglobulin M (IgM) were tested for rubella. The investigation results were entered into an electronic database using SPSS version 25 for analysis. Out of 11749 samples tested for rubella IgM from 2011 to 2015, 2295 (19.5%) were positive for rubella IgM and 51% of rubella-positive cases were female. Five per cent of all cases were female aged between 15 and 49. Cases were confirmed from all regions, two administrative towns and seasonal variations were observed with peaks in the first and fourth seasonal periods of the years. As fear of congenital abnormality (CRS), the Ethiopian government should focus on rubella syndrome surveillance with the aim of starting a rubella vaccine.

Background The Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP)-Frontline is a three-month in-service training aimed at improving surveillance officers’ capacity to collect, analyze, and interpret surveillance data, and respond to health emergencies. We evaluated the effectiveness of the FETP-Frontline which was introduced in Ethiopia in 2016. Methods We conducted a comparative, randomized cross-sectional study to assess surveillance-related knowledge, skills, and performance among trained and untrained officers using a structured questionnaire and observation checklist. We compared the knowledge, skills, and performance scores of trained and untrained officers using the Fisher’s Exact test, chi-square test, and t-test at p-value Results We conducted the study among 74 trained and 76 untrained surveillance officers. About three-quarters of all participants were male, and the average age was 34 (± 8.6) years. Completeness and timeliness of surveillance reports were significantly higher among trained than untrained surveillance officers. The trained officers were more likely to have produced epidemiologic bulletins (55% vs 33%), conducted active surveillance six months before the survey (88% vs 72%), provided surveillance training (88% vs 65%), conducted strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis (55% vs 17%), and utilized Microsoft Excel to manage surveillance data (87% vs 47%). We also observed improved surveillance officers’ perceived skills and knowledge, and the availability and quality of surveillance formats and reports among the trained group. Conclusions FETP-Frontline trained surveillance officers demonstrated better knowledge, skills, and performance in most surveillance activities compared to the untrained officers. FETP-Frontline can address competency gaps among district surveillance officers in Ethiopia and other countries. Scaling up the program to cover unreached districts can enable achieving the human resource development core capacity requirement of the International Health Regulations 2005.

Background End-Stage Kidney Disease, the most severe form of chronic kidney disease, is fatal if not treated by renal replacement therapy. Thus, patients with End-Stage Kidney Disease depend on hemodialysis as a lifesaving treatment for the remainder of their lives. However, the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of patients on hemodialysis is much more underappreciated in resource limited countries. Methods A hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from August 01 to October 31, 2019. All patients who were on hemodialysis in five randomly selected public and private hospitals (n = 125) were included in the study. Data were administered by trained nurses by using a standardized Kidney Disease Quality of Life questionnaire. Clinical data were extracted from the patients’ medical charts. HRQOL was categorized as low, if the overall mean score was ≤ 50, or as high, if the overall mean score was > 50. Factors associated with lower HRQOL were identified by multi-variable binary logistic regression analysis and expressed by adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and its respective 95 % confidence interval. Results The mean age of the study participants (n = 125) was 50.33 years (± 15.07) and more than two-thirds (68.8 %) of the participants were males. The mean score of HRQOL was 49.08 ± 11.09, with 48.0 % (95 % CI: 42.2 − 54.5 %) of them had lower HRQOL. Unemployed patients (aOR = 2.40, 95 % CI: 1.10–5.90) and patients who had hemodialysis 2 times per week (aOR = 1.71, 95 % CI: 1.07–3.83) had lower HRQOL. Elderly patients had higher odds of having lower mean score on the burden of kidney disease (aOR = 2.07; 95 % CI 1.18–4.13) as compared to the younger patients. Conclusions Nearly half of the patients with ESKD on hemodialysis had lower overall HRQOL which is associated with their unemployment status and frequency of hemodialysis per week. Elderly patients had lower mean score of burden of kidney disease. Therefore, quality of life of patients with chronic dialysis should be given special attention during the patients’ care. Measures should be taken by the government to ensure accessibility and affordability of the hemodialysis services in the country.

Background; Malaria is caused by one or more of the five species of plasmodium species that can infect by the bite of female Anopheles. In Ethiopia, about 68% of the total population resides in areas with high malaria risk and 2,174,707 cases and 662 deaths due to malaria were reported in 2014–2015 with case fatality rate of 0.03%. The outbreak was reported on April 22/2019 (WHO week 17) then we investigate the outbreak to describe the magnitude of morbidity and mortality due to malaria outbreak, identify the etiologic agent and investigate factors associated with an occurrence of malaria outbreak.Methods; we conducted case control study in Bolosso Sore woreda. We used outbreak investigation questionnaire to asses’ risk factor for both cases and controls of patients. We collected 75 cases and 150 controls by face to face interview by administered questionnaire. We analysed the data with Epi Info.Version7.2.0.1 and SPSS.V 23 and the statistical we used 95% CI. Result; the overall attack rate of the woreda was 36.4 per 1000. From the cases Males are slightly more affected than females (38: 37) .The most affected age group is >15 years, 54 (72%) followed by 5-14, 17(22.7%). Plasmodium falcifarem is the highest proportion of malaria in the wereda. Having impregnated treated net have no problem but impregnated treated net who have used sometimes (AOR 10.214; 95% CI) was identified as a risk factor for malaria or more likely affected by malaria ten times each respectively than those impregnated treated net used always. Conclusion; Presence of intermittent rivers nearest to the community, open deep well near to their home and usage of impregnated treated net (those impregnated treated net use sometimes and never use impregnated treated net) were risk factors for onset/occurrence of the outbreak of malaria. We recommend all malarias area insecticide treated bed net should be distributed for all households according to their family member. Beside this, utilization of bed net should be monitored and optimized.

Background In 2010–2017, meningococcal serogroup A conjugate vaccine (MACV) was introduced in 21 African meningitis belt countries. Neisseria meningitidis A epidemics have been eliminated here; however, non-A serogroup epidemics continue. Methods We reviewed epidemiological and laboratory World Health Organization data after MACV introduction in 20 countries. Information from the International Coordinating Group documented reactive vaccination. Results In 2011–2017, 17 outbreaks were reported (31 786 suspected cases from 8 countries, 1–6 outbreaks/year). Outbreaks were of 18–14 542 cases in 113 districts (median 3 districts/outbreak). The most affected countries were Nigeria (17 375 cases) and Niger (9343 cases). Cumulative average attack rates per outbreak were 37–203 cases/100 000 population (median 112). Serogroup C accounted for 11 outbreaks and W for 6. The median proportion of laboratory confirmed cases was 20%. Reactive vaccination was conducted during 14 outbreaks (5.7 million people vaccinated, median response time 36 days). Conclusion Outbreaks due to non-A serogroup meningococci continue to be a significant burden in this region. Until an affordable multivalent conjugate vaccine becomes available, the need for timely reactive vaccination and an emergency vaccine stockpile remains high. Countries must continue to strengthen detection, confirmation, and timeliness of outbreak control measures.

Declaration of the novel coronavirus disease as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern necessitated countries to get ready to respond. Here, we describe key achievements, challenges and lessons learnt during the readiness and early response to COVID-19 in Ethiopia. Readiness activities commenced as early as January 2020 with the activation of a national Public Health Emergency Operations Centre and COVID-19 Incident Management System (IMS) by the Ethiopian Public Health Institute. The COVID-19 IMS conducted rapid risk assessments, developed scenario-based contingency plans, national COVID-19 guidelines and facilitated the enhancement of early warning and monitoring mechanisms. Early activation of a coordination mechanism and strengthening of detection and response capacities contributed to getting the country ready on time and mounting an effective early response. High-level political leadership and commitment led to focused efforts in coordination of response interventions. Health screening, mandatory 14-day quarantine and testing established for all international travellers arriving into the country slowed down the influx of travellers. The International Health Regulations (IHR) capacities in the country served as a good foundation for timely readiness and response. Leveraging on existing IHR capacities in the country built prior to COVID-19 helped slow down the importation and mitigated uncontrolled spread of the disease in the country. Challenges experienced included late operationalisation of a multisectoral coordination platform, shortage of personal protective equipment resulting from global disruption of importation and the huge influx of over 10 000 returnees from different COVID-19-affected countries over a short period of time with resultant constrain on response resources.

BackgroundThe Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic was originated from Wuhan city, China and spread to almost all countries and territories in the world. Ethiopia reported its first COVID-19 confirmed case on 13 March, 2020. This study aims to show the epidemiological characteristics of the pandemic in Ethiopia in the first hundred days, which would help to guide the ongoing national response efforts to control and prevent the spread of the disease through generating scientific evidence.MethodWe conducted secondary data analysis of COVID-19 data extracted from a national database at Ethiopian Public Health Institute from 13 March to 21 June, 2020. We anonymized personal information for privacy protection. Data was cleaned and descriptive analyses was employed. We used Arc GIS to illustrate the geographical distribution of COVID-19 cases.ResultsOf the 216,328 examined individuals, 4,534 (2.1%) tested positive for COVID-19 of which 74(CFR: 1.6%) have died. People aged between 20–49 years attributed for 76.3% of the total cases. Majority, 2,851 (62.9%) of the cases were male, 3,222 (71.3%) reported from Addis Ababa, 982 (21.7%) of the cases were imported, 413(9.1%) had contact with confirmed cases, 3,139 (69.2%) had no travel history nor contact with confirmed case, and 4,180 (92.2%) of the cases reported were asymptomatic. Health Care Workers contributed for 3.7% of the total cases reported.ConclusionThe magnitude and distribution of COVID-19 cases and deaths and Health Care Workers infection has increased throughout the country over-time. Due emphasis needs to be given by the government, all stakeholders, and partners to scale-up and expand laboratory diagnosis capacities, strengthen surveillance and contact tracing, implement proper Infection Prevention and Control measures, improve case management services and the community should strictly follow social distancing measures. There should be an appropriate health care workers risk factors assessment and intervention to adequately protect the health care workers exposure and infection. Further study shall be conducted to describe the knowledge gaps on the asymptomatic transmission of the virus.

Rabies infection is almost always a 100% lethal viral disease in all mammals, including humans. Although rabies is vaccine preventable disease, more than 60,000 people worldwide, and 2,700 people in Ethiopia die of fatal human rabies annually. The aim of this study was to generate strategic information on the extent of the burden of rabies and the existing major response strategies, in order to overcome and bring attention to the management of rabies outbreaks. Cross - sectional study design was used to assess the current situation of rabies burden in the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Regional States of Ethiopia. Data analysis revealed a total of 16 fatal human rabies and 287 suspected rabies exposures. The highest attack rate of 116.3 cases per 100,000 human subjects was reported in Tembaro woreda. As a result, 48 animal deaths of rabies have been reported, while cattle (28) have been more affected than other animal species. The lack of dog immunization, lack of community awareness of dog management, and inaccessibility and inefficiency of anti - rabies vaccines were major risk factors associated with the spread of rabies exposure between humans and animals. In conclusion, this study has clearly shown that both the existence and the high magnitude of fatal human and animal rabies are significant in the area. Multidisciplinary approach interventions to increase community awareness of dog vaccination, effective and immediate treatment of exposed individuals is recommended as a method of disease control and prevention.

Background The influenza virus spreads rapidly around the world in seasonal epidemics, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. Influenza-related incidence data are limited in many countries in Africa despite established sentinel surveillance. This study aimed to address the information gap by estimating the burden and seasonality of medically attended influenza like illness in Ethiopia. Method Influenza sentinel surveillance data collected from 3 influenza like illness (ILI) and 5 Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) sites from 2012 to 2017 was used for analysis. Descriptive statistics were applied for simple analysis. The proportion of medically attended influenza positive cases and incidence rate of ILI was determined using total admitted patients and catchment area population. Seasonality was estimated based on weekly trend of ILI and predicted threshold was done by applying the “Moving Epidemic Method (MEM)”. Result A total of 5715 medically attended influenza suspected patients who fulfills ILI and SARI case definition (77% ILI and 23% SARI) was enrolled. Laboratory confirmed influenza virus (influenza positive case) among ILI and SARI suspected case was 25% (1130/4426) and 3% (36/1289). Of which, 65% were influenza type A. The predominantly circulating influenza subtype were seasonal influenza A(H3N2) (n = 455, 60%) and Influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 (n = 293, 38.81%). The estimated mean annual influenza positive case proportion and ILI incidence rate was 160.04 and 52.48 per 100,000 population. The Incidence rate of ILI was higher in the age group of 15–44 years of age [‘Incidence rate (R) = 254.6 per 100,000 population’, 95% CI; 173.65, 335.55] and 5–14 years of age [R = 49.5, CI 95%; 31.47, 130.43]. The seasonality of influenza has two peak seasons; in a period from October–December and from April–June. Conclusion Significant morbidity of influenza like illness was observed with two peak seasons of the year and seasonal influenza A (H3N2) remains the predominantly circulating influenza subtype. Further study need to be considered to identify potential risks and improving the surveillance system to continue early detection and monitoring of circulating influenza virus in the country has paramount importance.

Background: Coordinating outbreak investigations requires effective interagency communication. Important tasks include making the initial notifications, establishing roles and responsibilities for each jurisdiction, providing updates on the progress of the investigations, revising priorities for the investigation, and establishing the next steps. The major goal of surveillance activities is to identify and eliminate preventable causes of morbidity and mortality. Outbreak response basically entails preparedness which helps to establish arrangements in advance to enable timely, effective and appropriate responses to specific potential hazardous events or emerging disaster situations that might threaten society/environment Objective: To review lessons learned from the October 2018 Wolayta Zone yellow fever outbreak management in SNNPR, Ethiopia. Methods: Qualitative research approach, with Thematic Analysis. Purposive sampling method was used. Data were collected through FGDs, in-depth interviews, observation and document reviews Results : Among the main findings of the review is the weakness of the surveillance to detect case; the surveillance system was not that much effective for early detection of viral hemorrhagic fevers and there was knowledge gap to detect in the existing. The Review found out further that preparedness plan was weak, failing to consider the outbreak for VRAM. However, it is worth-noting that the Review showed that despite late detection, a rapid response team was set up and was able to save the lives of many during the outbreak. The findings further showed there was good coordination among various stakeholders at different levels and with satisfying sharing of roles and responsibilities. Conclusion: Based on the major findings, it may be concluded that the surveillance system was weak to detect yellow fever outbreak occurrence in Wolaita Zone. A major gap is therefore the inability to include the case to the IDSR weekly report. Once the case was confirmed, the response to the crisis was fairly commendable. Introduction Suspected cholera cases were reported to the city administration health bureau in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia on June 5, 2016 and it was laboratory confirmed by culture on 7 June 2016. The outbreak was declared by the government on June 8, 2016. The aim of this study was to rapidly investigate the outbreak epidemiologically and guide response activities in the affected Sub cities of Addis Ababa city administration. Methods An unmatched 1:2 case-control study was conducted in six selected sub-cities of the city administration. Different laboratory tests were also done from suspected possible risk factors identified to support the epidemiological findings. A case was a patient greater than 5 years old, who developed acute watery diarrhea with or without Vomiting. Control was an individual greater than 5 years' old who stayed in the same township and did not suffer from cholera. A structured questionnaire was used to select cases and controls. Epi InfoTM statistical software was used to analyze the data. Results were presented in narratives, figures and tables. Results The present study found that, the study participants who used street-vended water (Odds Ratio (OR)=10.4; 95% CI: 1.20-90.9), those who reported holy water sources use (OR=2.7, 95% CI: 1.45-5.04), eating raw meat (OR=7.75; 95% CI: 3.86-15.54) or roasted meat (OR=2.16; 95% CI: 1.19-3.93) and vegetable salad (OR=2.07; 95% CI: 1.14-3.76) were associated with contracting cholera infection. The likelihood of contracting cholera was significantly higher among those who ate food from street vendor sources (OR=5.32; 95% CI: 1.82-15.56) and those who practiced open defecation (OR=8.12; 95% CI (2.20-29.81). Having a latrine (OR=0.29; 95% CI: 0.12-0.69) and proper hand hygiene practice (OR=0.22; 95% CI: 0.14-0.38) were found to be protective against cholera infection. Conclusion Improving awareness of the community by intensifying social mobilization activities through community participation in proper hygienic practice, proper waste disposal and latrine facility construction and utilization. Provision of safe water for the community by strictly conducting end-point assessment of water points and conducting a KAP assessment among food handlers to explore their knowledge and practices regarding safe food/drink handling and water treatment as well as initiate appropriate PH actions based on the findings which will be necessary for prevention of similar cholera outbreaks in the future.

Background: Dengue fever is a rapidly emerging vector born infectious disease caused by Dengue virus and it is now one of WHO reportable diseases. About 50 -200 million cases, 20,000 deaths occur annually. In Ethiopia the first outbreak of Dengue fever appeared in Dire Dawa city in 2013, where 9441 cases were recorded. The second Dengue fever outbreak occurred in Afar Region. Third and fourth was in Somali Region in Godey town, 2014 and 2015. In Godey town acute febrile illness cases of unknown cause become increased started from May 27, 2015. We investigated to identify risk factors of Dengue fever outbreak and commence control measures. Methods: A case-control study was conducted in Godey town, Ethiopia from 8-22 July 2015. Cases were defined according to the WHO guideline and controls were individuals with no sign and symptoms living in the same town with cases. We recruited 50 cases and 100 controls in the study. Medical records and line lists were reviewed. Data were collected at household level using structured questionnaires. Twenty-four serum samples collected from cases. Data was analyzed using SPSS 20 software. Result: We identified 223 cases with 0 death, 116 (52%) were male. The mean age of cases was 25.8 years. Ten cases were positive for Dengue fever by PCR at national laboratory. Lack of formal education (AOR=3.1; 95%CI: 1.30-7.49), living with ill person (AOR=2.8; 95%CI: 1.22-6.52), open containers in household (AOR=3.6; 95%CI: 1.34-9.38) and presence of larvae in the water containers (AOR=5.4; 95%CI: 2.33-12.44) were risk factors for the outbreak. Conclusion: Poor household water handling, living with ill person and lack of formal education contributes for occurrence of Dengue fever outbreak in Godey town. Health education and all other interventions associated with use of water and sanitation needs to be part of long-term control of Dengue.

Background Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a highly transmittable virus that continues to disrupt livelihoods, particularly those of low-income segments of society, around the world. In Ethiopia, more specifically in the capital city of Addis Ababa, a sudden increase in the number of confirmed positive cases in high-risk groups of the community has been observed over the last few weeks of the first case. Therefore, this study aims to assess knowledge, practice and associated factors that can contribute to the prevention of COVID-19 among high-risk groups in Addis Ababa. Methods A cross-sectional in person survey (n = 6007) was conducted from 14–30 April, 2020 following a prioritization within high-risk groups in Addis Ababa. The study area targeted bus stations, public transport drivers, air transport infrastructure, health facilities, public and private pharmacies, hotels, government-owned and private banks, telecom centers, trade centers, orphanages, elderly centers, prison, prisons and selected slum areas where the people live in a crowded areas. A questionnaire comprised of four sections (demographics, knowledge, practice and reported symptoms) was used for data collection. The outcomes (knowledge on the transmission and prevention of COVID-19 and practice) were measured using four items. A multi variable logistic regression was applied with adjustment for potential confounding. Results About half (48%, 95% CI: 46–49) of the study participants had poor knowledge on the transmission mode of COVID-19 whereas six out of ten (60%, 95% CI: 58–61) had good knowledge on prevention methods for COVID-19. The practice of preventive measures towards COVID-19 was found to be low (49%, 95% CI: 48–50). Factors that influence knowledge on COVID-19 transmission mechanisms were female gender, older age, occupation (health care and grocery worker), lower income and the use of the 8335 free call centre. Older age, occupation (being a health worker), middle income, experience of respiratory illness and religion were significantly associated with being knowledgeable about the prevention methods for COVID-19. The study found that occupation, religion, income, knowledge on the transmission and prevention of COVID-19 were associated with the practice of precautionary measures towards COVID-19. Conclusion The study highlighted that there was moderate knowledge about transmission modes and prevention mechanisms. Similarly, there was moderate practice of measures that contribute towards the prevention of COVID-19 among these priority and high-risk communities of Addis Ababa. There is an urgent need to fill the knowledge gap in terms of transmission mode and prevention methods of COVID-19 to improve prevention practices and control the spread of COVID-19. Use of female public figures and religious leaders could support the effort towards the increase in awareness.

Introduction: Influenza is a respiratory illness caused by influenza virus that can spread very easily from person to person. The virus is spread through the air by the exchange of fluid droplets from the mouth or nose of one person to another person due to sneezing and coughing. The manifestations of illness (fever, cough, sore throat) caused by the influenza virus are usually mild to moderate but for some it could be severe, leading to hospitalization and even death. In Ethiopia, influenza sentinel surveillance has been launched in 2008 with one ILI sentinel site (Shiromeda Health Center) and one SARI sentinel site (Yekatit 12 Hosp). Ongoing analysis of surveillance data is important for detecting outbreaks and unexpected increases or decreases in disease occurrence, monitoring disease trends, and evaluating the effectiveness of disease control programs and policies. This trend analysis was conducted to characterize ILI cases in person, place and time, determine the positivity rate of the sentinel site and put possible recommendations based on the findings. Methods: We reviewed five years Influenza (2013 to 2017) data of Shiro meda health center. Data was cleaned prior to analysis. Descriptive analysis by person, place and time was done using Microsoft excel 2013. Results displayed using narration, graphs and tables. Results: A total of 1,489 cases of Influenza like illness reported from Shiro meda health center for the last five years, of which 950 (64%0 were females and the remaining 539 (46%) were males. Out of the total reported cases, 98% were from Gullele sub-city. The most affected age group was 15-44 (49%) followed by 5-14 (32%). The positivity rate of the site was 30.31%. Of those positive cases for Influenza, 20% were Influenza type A and the remaining were Influenza type B. Some important characteristics of patients are missing. Conclusion: Almost all of the cases were reported from Gullele sub-city. The most affected age group was 15-44 followed by 5-14. Influenza type A and B are circulating in the sentinnel site. Regular data analysis and supevision is required to improve the quality of data produced in the sentinnel site.

Routine Malaria surveillance data is useful for assessing incidence and trends over time and in stratification for targeting of malaria. The reporting completeness and potential bias of such data needs assessment. Approximately 52 million people (68%) live in malaria risk areas in Ethiopia, primarily at altitudes below 2,000 meters. Objective: The general objective of this analysis was to assess the trend and magnitude of Malaria surveillance data by time, place and laboratory result for the last five years in Benishangul Gumuz Region. Descriptive cross-sectional study was used to analyze Malaria surveillance data in terms of time, place and laboratory result. Data cleaning and analysis was made by using excel 2013 software. A total of 96757 expected health facilities were in the region from 2013-2017. A total of 86266 health facilities were reported in the last five years with an average completeness of 89.2%. In the last five years (2013-2017) total of 1186514 clinically and confirmed malaria cases were reported regionally with 2290606 total malaria suspected fever examined with ninety inpatient deaths. Among the total clinically and confirmed cases, 1172244 (98.8%) were outpatients, 14248 (1.2%) were inpatients and 1013046 (85.0%) cases were confirmed by laboratory. Out of the total confirmed malaria cases 811984 (80.2%) cases were due to P.falciparum malaria and 201030 (19.8%) cases were due to P.vivax malaria. There were no other species of malaria reported other than these two species. From the total expected health facilities; a total of 86266 health facilities were reported in the last five years with an average completeness of 89.2% which is above the WHO minimum requirement (80.0%). The malaria reports shows that significant improvement in cases of data quality and management from year to year and currently all zones, Woredas and health facilities including private and NGO facilities are included and reported weekly the malaria surveillance from the data report identified in this study. The average five year regional incidence of confirmed malaria (P. Falciparum and P. Vivax) was less than half the incidence of the clinical and confirmed malaria cases.
