1. Mutual neutralization of C$_{60}^+$ and C$_{60}^-$ ions: Excitation energies and state-selective rate coefficients

Abstract: Context: Mutual neutralization between cations and anions play an important role in determining the charge-balance in certain astrophysical environments. However, empirical data for such reactions involving complex molecular species has been lacking due to challenges in performing experimental studies, leaving the astronomical community to rely on decades old models with large uncertainties for describing these processes in the interstellar medium. Aims: To investigate the mutual neutralization (MN) reaction, C$_{60}^+$ + C$_{60}^-$ $\rightarrow$ C$_{60}^*$ + C$_{60}$, for collisions at interstellar-like conditions. Methods: The mutual neutralization reaction between C$_{60}^+$ and C$_{60}^-$ at collision energies of 100\,meV was studied using the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment, DESIREE, and its merged-beam capabilities. To aid in the interpretation of the experimental results, semi-classical modeling based on the Landau-Zener approach was performed for the studied reaction. Results: We experimentally identify a narrow range of kinetic energies for the neutral reaction products. Modeling was used to calculate the quantum state-selective reaction probabilities, absolute cross sections, and rate coefficients of these MN reactions, using the experimental results as a benchmark. The MN cross sections are compared with model results for electron attachment to C$_{60}$ and electron recombination with C$_{60}^+$. Conclusions: The present results show that it is crucial to take mutual polarization effects, the finite sizes, and the final quantum states of both molecular ions into account for reliable predictions of MN rates expected to strongly influence the charge-balance and chemistry in, e.g., dense molecular clouds., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

2. Cooling of gold cluster anions, Au$_N^-$, $N=2-13,15$, in a cryogenic ion-beam storage ring

Abstract: We have measured the spontaneous and photo-induced decays of anionic gold clusters, Au$_N^-$, with sizes ranging from $N = 2$ to 13, and 15. After production in a sputter ion source, the size-selected clusters were stored in the cryogenic electrostatic ion-beam storage ring DESIREE and their neutralization decays were measured for storage times between 0.1 and 100 s. The dimer was observed to decay by electron emission in parallel to neutral atom emission at long times, analogously to the behavior of copper and silver dimers, implying a breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Radiative cooling is observed for all cluster sizes except for the dimer. The decay rates of clusters $N=3,6,8-13,15$ show only a single radiative cooling time. For $N=6-13$ the cooling times have a strong odd-even oscillation with an amplitude that decrease with cluster size, and with the even $N$ having the fast cooling. We compare our results with previous measurements of radiative cooling rates of the corresponding cationic gold clusters, Au$_N^+$, which also show an odd-even effect with a similar oscillation amplitude but at orders of magnitude shorter time scales, and out of phase with the anions., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

Abstract: High-precision measurements of the electron affinities (EA) of the three stable isotopes of silicon, $^{28}$Si, $^{29}$Si and $^{30}$Si, have been performed at the cryogenic electrostatic ion-beam storage ring DESIREE. The quantum states of the ions were manipulated using laser depletion, and the ions were photodetached by laser photodetachment threshold spectroscopy. These EA values are the first reported for $^{29}$Si$^-$ and $^{30}$Si$^-$ and provide a reduced uncertainty for $^{28}$Si$^-$. The resulting EAs are $EA(^{28}$Si$) = 1.38952201(17)$ eV, $EA(^{29}$Si$) = 1.38952172(12)$ eV and $EA(^{29}$Si$) = 1.38952078(12)$ eV, with the corresponding isotope shifts $IS(^{29-28}$Si$) = 0.29(16)$ micro eV and $IS(^{30-28}$Si$) = 1.23(16) $ micro eV. In addition to these measurements, the resolution and signal-to-background level was sufficient to reveal the hyperfine structure splitting in the $^{29}$Si$^-$ isotope, which we report to be $1.8(4) micro eV.

Abstract: Mid-infrared emission features probe the properties of ionized gas, and hot or warm molecular gas. The Orion Bar is a frequently studied photodissociation region (PDR) containing large amounts of gas under these conditions, and was observed with the MIRI IFU aboard JWST as part of the "PDRs4All" program. The resulting IR spectroscopic images of high angular resolution (0.2") reveal a rich observational inventory of mid-IR emission lines, and spatially resolve the substructure of the PDR, with a mosaic cutting perpendicularly across the ionization front and three dissociation fronts. We extracted five spectra that represent the ionized, atomic, and molecular gas layers, and measured the most prominent gas emission lines. An initial analysis summarizes the physical conditions of the gas and the potential of these data. We identified around 100 lines, report an additional 18 lines that remain unidentified, and measured the line intensities and central wavelengths. The H I recombination lines originating from the ionized gas layer bordering the PDR, have intensity ratios that are well matched by emissivity coefficients from H recombination theory, but deviate up to 10% due contamination by He I lines. We report the observed emission lines of various ionization stages of Ne, P, S, Cl, Ar, Fe, and Ni, and show how certain line ratios vary between the five regions. We observe the pure-rotational H$_2$ lines in the vibrational ground state from 0-0 S(1) to 0-0 S(8), and in the first vibrationally excited state from 1-1 S(5) to 1-1 S(9). We derive H$_2$ excitation diagrams, and approximate the excitation with one thermal (~700 K) component representative of an average gas temperature, and one non-thermal component (~2700 K) probing the effect of UV pumping. We compare these results to an existing model for the Orion Bar PDR and highlight the differences with the observations., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables. Abstract: Most low-mass stars form in stellar clusters that also contain massive stars, which are sources of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation. Theoretical models predict that this FUV radiation produces photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) on the surfaces of protoplanetary disks around low-mass stars, impacting planet formation within the disks. We report JWST and Atacama Large Millimetere Array observations of a FUV-irradiated protoplanetary disk in the Orion Nebula. Emission lines are detected from the PDR; modelling their kinematics and excitation allows us to constrain the physical conditions within the gas. We quantify the mass-loss rate induced by the FUV irradiation, finding it is sufficient to remove gas from the disk in less than a million years. This is rapid enough to affect giant planet formation in the disk.

6. Structures and stabilities of mixed clusters of fullerene and coronene molecules

Abstract: We have performed molecular dynamics simulations on the formation of mixed molecular clusters of buckminsterfullerene and coronene, $(\mathrm{C}_{24}\mathrm{H}_{12})_n(\mathrm{C}_{60})_{N-n}$. We report on our findings on the structures and their relative stabilities for cluster sizes $N=5$ and 13 and for all possible combinations of the two species within these sizes, including the pure clusters of each type. Generally, we see that the two species mix rather poorly and that compactly bound clusters are favoured over spatially extended ones. For a given ratio of coronene and fullerene, clusters with one or two coronene stacks tend to be more stable than those with a larger number of stacks. In the case of small clusters, the coronene and fullerene molecules tend to separate into two different cluster parts. 7. Bond breaking and making in mixed clusters of fullerene and coronene molecules following keV-ion impact

Abstract: We have performed classical molecular dynamics simulations of 3 keV Ar + $(\mathrm{C}_{24}\mathrm{H}_{12})_n(\mathrm{C}_{60})_{m}$ collisions where $(n,m)=(3,2), (1,4), (9,4)$ and $(2,11)$. The simulated mass spectra of covalently bound reaction products reproduce the main features of the corresponding experimental results reported by Domaracka et al., PCCP, 2018, 20, 15052. The present results support their conclusion that molecular growth is mainly driven by knockout where individual atoms are promptly removed in Rutherford type scattering processes. The so formed highly reactive fragments may then bind with neighboring molecules in the clusters producing a rich variety of growth products extending up to sizes containing several hundreds of atoms, and here we show examples of such structures. In addition, knocked out atoms may be absorbed such that e.g. hydrogenated coronene and fullerene molecules are formed., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

8. Stability of C$_{59}$ Knockout Fragments from Femtoseconds to Infinity

Abstract: We have studied the stability of C$_{59}$ anions as a function of time, from their formation on femtosecond timescales to their stabilization on second timescales and beyond, using a combination of theory and experiments. The C$_{59}^-$ fragments were produced in collisions between C$_{60}$ fullerene anions and neutral helium gas at a velocity of 90 km/s (corresponding to a collision energy of 166 eV in the center-of-mass frame). The fragments were then stored in a cryogenic ion-beam storage ring at the DESIREE facility where they were followed for up to one minute. Classical molecular dynamics simulations were used to determine the reaction cross section and the excitation energy distributions of the products formed in these collisions. We found that about 15 percent of the C$_{59}^-$ ions initially stored in the ring are intact after about 100 ms, and that this population then remains intact indefinitely. This means that C$_{60}$ fullerenes exposed to energetic atoms and ions, such as stellar winds and shock waves, will produce stable, highly reactive products, like C$_{59}$, that are fed into interstellar chemical reaction networks., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

Abstract: (Abridged) We investigate the impact of radiative feedback from massive stars on their natal cloud and focus on the transition from the HII region to the atomic PDR (crossing the ionisation front (IF)), and the subsequent transition to the molecular PDR (crossing the dissociation front (DF)). We use high-resolution near-IR integral field spectroscopic data from NIRSpec on JWST to observe the Orion Bar PDR as part of the PDRs4All JWST Early Release Science Program. The NIRSpec data reveal a forest of lines including, but not limited to, HeI, HI, and CI recombination lines, ionic lines, OI and NI fluorescence lines, Aromatic Infrared Bands (AIBs including aromatic CH, aliphatic CH, and their CD counterparts), CO2 ice, pure rotational and ro-vibrational lines from H2, and ro-vibrational lines HD, CO, and CH+, most of them detected for the first time towards a PDR. Their spatial distribution resolves the H and He ionisation structure in the Huygens region, gives insight into the geometry of the Bar, and confirms the large-scale stratification of PDRs. We observe numerous smaller scale structures whose typical size decreases with distance from Ori C and IR lines from CI, if solely arising from radiative recombination and cascade, reveal very high gas temperatures consistent with the hot irradiated surface of small-scale dense clumps deep inside the PDR. The H2 lines reveal multiple, prominent filaments which exhibit different characteristics. This leaves the impression of a "terraced" transition from the predominantly atomic surface region to the CO-rich molecular zone deeper in. This study showcases the discovery space created by JWST to further our understanding of the impact radiation from young stars has on their natal molecular cloud and proto-planetary disk, which touches on star- and planet formation as well as galaxy evolution., Comment: 52 pages, 30 figures, submitted to A&A

Abstract: The JWST has captured the most detailed and sharpest infrared images ever taken of the inner region of the Orion Nebula, the nearest massive star formation region, and a prototypical highly irradiated dense photo-dissociation region (PDR). We investigate the fundamental interaction of far-ultraviolet photons with molecular clouds. The transitions across the ionization front (IF), dissociation front (DF), and the molecular cloud are studied at high-angular resolution. These transitions are relevant to understanding the effects of radiative feedback from massive stars and the dominant physical and chemical processes that lead to the IR emission that JWST will detect in many Galactic and extragalactic environments. Due to the proximity of the Orion Nebula and the unprecedented angular resolution of JWST, these data reveal that the molecular cloud borders are hyper structured at small angular scales of 0.1-1" (0.0002-0.002 pc or 40-400 au at 414 pc). A diverse set of features are observed such as ridges, waves, globules and photoevaporated protoplanetary disks. At the PDR atomic to molecular transition, several bright features are detected that are associated with the highly irradiated surroundings of the dense molecular condensations and embedded young star. Toward the Orion Bar PDR, a highly sculpted interface is detected with sharp edges and density increases near the IF and DF. This was predicted by previous modeling studies, but the fronts were unresolved in most tracers. A complex, structured, and folded DF surface was traced by the H2 lines. This dataset was used to revisit the commonly adopted 2D PDR structure of the Orion Bar. JWST provides us with a complete view of the PDR, all the way from the PDR edge to the substructured dense region, and this allowed us to determine, in detail, where the emission of the atomic and molecular lines, aromatic bands, and dust originate.

Abstract: (Abridged) Mid-infrared observations of photodissociation regions (PDRs) are dominated by strong emission features called aromatic infrared bands (AIBs). The most prominent AIBs are found at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.2 $\mu$m. The most sensitive, highest-resolution infrared spectral imaging data ever taken of the prototypical PDR, the Orion Bar, have been captured by JWST. We provide an inventory of the AIBs found in the Orion Bar, along with mid-IR template spectra from five distinct regions in the Bar: the molecular PDR, the atomic PDR, and the HII region. We use JWST NIRSpec IFU and MIRI MRS observations of the Orion Bar from the JWST Early Release Science Program, PDRs4All (ID: 1288). We extract five template spectra to represent the morphology and environment of the Orion Bar PDR. The superb sensitivity and the spectral and spatial resolution of these JWST observations reveal many details of the AIB emission and enable an improved characterization of their detailed profile shapes and sub-components. While the spectra are dominated by the well-known AIBs at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.2, and 12.7 $\mu$m, a wealth of weaker features and sub-components are present. We report trends in the widths and relative strengths of AIBs across the five template spectra. These trends yield valuable insight into the photochemical evolution of PAHs, such as the evolution responsible for the shift of 11.2 $\mu$m AIB emission from class B$_{11.2}$ in the molecular PDR to class A$_{11.2}$ in the PDR surface layers. This photochemical evolution is driven by the increased importance of FUV processing in the PDR surface layers, resulting in a "weeding out" of the weakest links of the PAH family in these layers. 16. The Largest Fullerene

Abstract: Fullerenes are lowest energy structures for gas phase all-carbon particles for a range of sizes, but graphite remains the lowest energy allotrope of bulk carbon. This implies that the lowest energy structure changes nature from fullerenes to graphite or graphene at some size and therefore, in turn, implies a limit on the size of free fullerenes as ground state structures. We calculate this largest stable single shell fullerene to be of size $N=1\times10^4$, using the AIREBO effective potential. Above this size fullerene onions are more stable, with an energy per atom that approaches graphite structures. Onions and graphite have very similar ground state energies, raising the intriguing possibility that fullerene onions could be the lowest free energy states of large carbon particles in some temperature range.

17. Resilience of small PAHs in interstellar clouds: Efficient stabilization of cyanonaphthalene by fast radiative cooling

Abstract: After decades of speculation and searching, astronomers have recently identified specific Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in space. Remarkably, the observed abundance of cyanonaphthalene (CNN, C10H7CN) in the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC-1) is six orders of magnitude higher than expected from astrophysical modeling. Here, we report absolute unimolecular dissociation and radiative cooling rate coefficients of the 1-CNN isomer in its cationic form. These results are based on measurements of the time-dependent neutral product emission rate and Kinetic Energy Release distributions produced from an ensemble of internally excited 1-CNN + studied in an environment similar to that in interstellar clouds. We find that Recurrent Fluorescence - radiative relaxation via thermally populated electronic excited states - efficiently stabilizes 1-CNN+ , owing to a large enhancement of the electronic transition probability by vibronic coupling. Our results help explain the anomalous abundance of CNN in TMC-1 and challenge the widely accepted picture of rapid destruction of small PAHs in space.

Abstract: Abstract Background Digital health care services have the potential to improve access to sexual and reproductive health care for youth but require substantial implementation efforts to translate into individual and public health gains. Health care providers are influential both regarding implementation and utilization of the services, and hence, their perceptions of digital health care services and the implementation process are essential to identify and address. The aim of this study was to explore midwives’ perception of digital sexual and reproductive health care services for youth, and to identify perceived barriers and facilitators of the implementation of digital health care provision in youth clinics. Methods We performed semi-structured interviews with midwives (n = 16) working at youth clinics providing both on-site and digital sexual and reproductive health care services to youth in Stockholm, Sweden. Interview data were analyzed using a content analysis approach guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). Results Midwives acknowledged that the implementation of digital health care improved the overall access and timeliness of the services at youth clinics. The ability to accommodate the needs of youth regarding their preferred meeting environment (digital or on-site) and easy access to follow-up consultations were identified as benefits of digital health care. Challenges to provide digital health care included communication barriers, privacy and confidentiality concerns, time constraints, inability to offer digital appointments for social counselling, and midwives’ preference for in person consultations. Experiencing organizational support during the implementation was appreciated but varied between the respondents. Conclusion Digital sexual and reproductive health care services could increase access and are valuable complements to on-site services in youth clinics. Sufficient training for midwives and organizational support are crucial to ensure high quality health care. Privacy and safety concerns for the youth might aggravate implementation of digital health care. Future research could focus on equitable access and youth’ perceptions of digital health care services for sexual and reproductive health.

Abstract: Abstract Background Sarcopenia is associated with multiple adverse outcomes. Traditional methods to determine low muscle mass for the diagnosis of sarcopenia are mainly based on dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA), whole‐body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and bioelectrical impedance analysis. These tests are not always available and are rather time consuming and expensive. However, many brain and head diseases require a head MRI. In this study, we aim to provide a more accessible way to detect sarcopenia by comparing the traditional method of DXA lean mass estimation versus the tongue and masseter muscle mass assessed in a standard brain MRI. Methods The H70 study is a longitudinal study of older people living in Gothenburg, Sweden. In this cross‐sectional analysis, from 1203 participants aged 70 years at baseline, we included 495 with clinical data and MRI images available. We used the appendicular lean soft tissue index (ALSTI) in DXA images as our reference measure of lean mass. Images from the masseter and tongue were analysed and segmented using 3D Slicer. For the statistical analysis, the Spearman correlation coefficient was used, and concordance was estimated with the Kappa coefficient. Abstract: Abstract Background Keratoconus (KC) is characterized by pathological thinning and bulging of the cornea that may lead to visual impairment. The etiology of sporadic KC remains enigmatic despite intensive research in recent decades. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between previously highlighted genetic variants associated with KC and sporadic KC in a Swedish cohort. Methods A total of 176 patients (age 16–70 years) with sporadic KC diagnosed by Scheimpflug-topography (Pentacam) were included. The control group (n = 418; age 70 years) was a subsample originating from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies of ageing. Extraction of DNA from blood samples was performed according to standard procedures, and genotyping was performed using competitive allele specific PCR (KASP) technology. A total of 11 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected for analysis. Results Statistically significant associations (p = 0.005) were found between the SNPs rs2721051 and rs9938149 and sporadic KC. These results replicate earlier research that found associations between genetic variants in the FOXO1 and BANP-ZNF469 genes and sporadic KC in other populations. Conclusion Genetic variations in the FOXO1 and BANP-ZNF469 genes may be involved in the pathogenesis of sporadic KC.

Abstract: Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the Universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter- and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template datasets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. Abstract: Abstract Background This study examined how living alone and loneliness associate with all-cause mortality in older men and women. Methods Baseline data from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies, including 70-year-olds interviewed in 2000 and 75-year-olds (new recruits) interviewed in 2005 were used for analyses (N = 778, 353 men, 425 women). Six-year mortality was based on national register data. Results At baseline, 36.6% lived alone and 31.9% reported feelings of loneliness. A total of 72 (9.3%) participants died during the 6-year follow-up period. Cumulative mortality rates per 1000 person-years were 23.9 for men and 9.6 for women. Mortality was increased more than twofold among men who lived alone compared to men living with someone (HR 2.40, 95% CI 1.34–4.30). Elevated risk remained after multivariable adjustment including loneliness and depression (HR 2.56, 95% CI 1.27–5.16). Stratification revealed that mortality risk in the group of men who lived alone and felt lonely was twice that of their peers who lived with someone and did not experience loneliness (HR 2.52, 95% CI 1.26–5.05). In women, a more than fourfold increased risk of mortality was observed in those who experienced loneliness despite living with others (HR 4.52, 95% CI 1.43–14.23). Conclusions Living alone was an independent risk factor for death in men but not in women. Mortality was doubled in men who lived alone and felt lonely. In contrast, mortality was particularly elevated in women who felt lonely despite living with others. In the multivariable adjusted models these associations were attenuated and were no longer significant after adjusting for mainly depression in men and physical inactivity in women. Gender needs to be taken into account when considering the health consequences of living situation and loneliness.

31. Mutual neutralisation in Li$^+$+H$^-$/D$^-$ and Na$^+$+H$^-$/D$^-$ collisions: Implications of experimental results for non-LTE modelling of stellar spectra

Abstract: Advances in merged-beams instruments have allowed experimental studies of the mutual neutralisation (MN) processes in collisions of both Li$^+$ and Na$^+$ ions with D$^-$ at energies below 1 eV. These experimental results place constraints on theoretical predictions of MN processes of Li$^+$ and Na$^+$ with H$^-$, important for non-LTE modelling of Li and Na spectra in late-type stars. We compare experimental results with calculations for methods typically used to calculate MN processes, namely the full quantum (FQ) approach, and asymptotic model approaches based on the linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) and semi-empirical (SE) methods for deriving couplings. It is found that FQ calculations compare best overall with the experiments, followed by the LCAO, and the SE approaches. The experimental results together with the theoretical calculations, allow us to investigate the effects on modelled spectra and derived abundances and their uncertainties arising from uncertainties in the MN rates. Numerical experiments in a large grid of 1D model atmospheres, and a smaller set of 3D models, indicate that neglect of MN can lead to abundance errors of up to 0.1 dex (26\%) for Li at low metallicity, and 0.2 dex (58\%) for Na at high metallicity, while the uncertainties in the relevant MN rates as constrained by experiments correspond to uncertainties in abundances of much less than 0.01~dex (2\%). This agreement for simple atoms gives confidence in the FQ, LCAO and SE model approaches to be able to predict MN with the accuracy required for non-LTE modelling in stellar atmospheres., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

Abstract: Abstract Background Neurofilament light chain protein (NFL), a marker of neuronal axonal degeneration, is increased in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). Assays for analysis of NFL in plasma are now widely available but plasma NFL has not been reported in iNPH patients. Our aim was to examine plasma NFL in iNPH patients and to evaluate the correlation between plasma and CSF levels, and whether NFL levels are associated with clinical symptoms and outcome after shunt surgery. Methods Fifty iNPH patients with median age 73 who had their symptoms assessed with the iNPH scale and plasma and CSF NFL sampled pre- and median 9 months post-operatively. CSF plasma was compared with 50 healthy controls (HC) matched for age and gender. Concentrations of NFL were determined in plasma using an in-house Simoa method and in CSF using a commercially available ELISA method. Results Plasma NFL was elevated in patients with iNPH compared to HC (iNPH: 45 (30–64) pg/mL; HC: 33 (26–50) (median; Q1–Q3), p = 0.029). Abstract: Introduction: Exposure to dementia risk factors throughout life can lead to brain atrophy and older- appearing brains on neuroimaging. Resilience mechanisms can help sustain the brain structure (brain maintenance, BM) and/or compensate for the neuropathological damage (cognitive reserve, CR), preserving cognition. Traditional proxy-based approaches (e.g., education) face challenges in measuring these mechanisms as they cannot capture the core biological dimension. However, with deep learning is possible to develop algorithms predicting the biological age of the brain from raw brain images. This study investigated whether differences between predicted brain age and chronological age (PBA-CA) can be used as a marker of BM and/or CR following the NIH-funded Collaboratory on Reserve and Resilience framework. Methods: The study population included 719 dementia-free septuagenarians from the Gothenburg H70-1944 MRI cohort. We applied the deep learning model—developed in-house using minimally processed T1-w MRI from ∼17000 neurologically intact individuals from UK Biobank, ADNI, AIBL, and GENIC and validated via hold-out and cross-validation approaches—to H70 participants’ MRI to predict their brain age, and computed PBA-CA. MRI markers of brain pathology included cortical thickness (overall and Alzheimer's disease-related), cerebral small vessel disease (SVD; individual markers and score), and white-matter microstructural alterations (DTI's fractional anisotropy). Global and domain-specific cognitive function was based on composite scores from ten tests. Data analysis included regression models and stratification by sex. Results: In the brain, decreasing differences between PBA and CA (reflecting younger-appearing brains) were associated with a thicker brain (overall and AD signature areas), lower SVD score—particularly lower white matter hyperintensities volume, lacunes, large infarcts—, and higher fractional anisotropy (more integrity). Decreasing differences were also related to better cognitive performance, globally and in attention/speed, executive function, and visuospatial abilities. In stratified analysis by sex, such associations were evident in men but not in women, except fractional anisotropy [robust regressions’ β-coefficients for women -4.89 (95%CI-8.87,-0.90) and men -23.7 (95%CI -32.9,-14.4)]. 36. Distinct patterns of atrophy and their determinants among the elderly population: insights from the Gothenburg H70–1944 Birth cohort

Abstract: Introduction: Distinct patterns of brain atrophy exists in common neurodegenerative disorders. However, whether these patterns are present also in non-clinical populations remains elusive, yet crucial to detect people at-risk of dementia. This cross-sectional study aimed to identify specific patterns of grey matter atrophy and their determinants among cognitively intact older individuals. Methods: We included 746 septuagenarians from the Gothenburg H70-1944 Birth cohort who did not have dementia or neuropsychiatric disorders and with available MRI. Unsupervised classification using Random Forest was applied to identify distinct patterns of brain atrophy based on grey matter volume and thickness from 34 cortical and 7 subcortical regions. Linear and multinomial logistic regression models were used to compare the clusters pairwise (cluster 1 vs. remaining) and estimate their associations with sociodemographic and vascular risk factors, medical conditions, lifestyle, and genetic factors. Furthermore, the clusters were compared in relation to cognition and biomarkers (MRI, DTI, CSF, or blood) of neurodegeneration, cerebrovascular pathology, inflammation, and lipidic abnormalities. Results: We identified 5 clusters that significantly differed in atrophy severity and typicality (location). Cluster 1 was the most prevalent (n=278, 37.3%). As it showed no atrophy differences from the overall sample, Cluster 1 was set as the reference group. Cluster 2 (n=142, 19%) exhibited diffused atrophy, primarily concentrated in frontal regions. Cluster 3 (n=121, 16.2%) and Cluster 4 (n=157, 21%) were characterized by the least atrophy, particularly in frontotemporal and temporal regions. Cluster 5 (n=48, 6.4%) showed more atrophy in parietal-occipital regions.Moreover, regression analyses indicated that small vessel disease (white matter hyperintensities and lacunes), vascular risk factors (smoking, overweight/obesity, alcohol risk consumption), cardiometabolic disorders, lipid alterations, depression, and education play a key role in separating the clusters. Discussion: Our study revealed the presence of distinct patterns of atrophy in elderly individuals otherwise cognitively healthy. Small vessel disease, vascular risk factors, and cardiometabolic conditions may contribute to these patterns. These findings highlight the importance of vascular health to preserve cognitive function and brain structure in old age.

37. Associations between metabolic syndrome and markers of brain pathology: the role of sex- differences

Abstract: Introduction: Cardiovascular and metabolic disorders rarely occur alone in old age but often cluster together in the so-called metabolic syndrome (MetS). While individual components of MetS, such as obesity, hypertension, and diabetes, have been linked to dementia and brain atrophy, their combined impact on cognitive and brain aging remains poorly explored. Our current study aims to investigate the relationship between MetS and markers of neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular pathologies while also considering potential differences between sexes. Methods: We included 741 cognitively intact septuagenarians from the Gothenburg H70-Birth cohort 1944 with available brain MRI (286 had cerebrospinal fluid [CSF] sampling). MetS was defined by standard criteria (at least three among adiposity, raised blood pressure, blood glucose, reduced HDL-cholesterol, elevated triglycerides). MRI markers of brain pathology included overall (mean cortical thickness) and Alzheimer's disease (AD; average cortical thickness in signature areas) neurodegeneration, cerebral small vessel disease (SVD; markers such as white matter hyperintensity, lacunes, microbleeds, and perivascular spaces, and SVD score) and DTI's white- matter microstructural changes (fractional anisotropy). CSF biomarkers included t-tau, neurofilament light, neurogranin (overall neurodegeneration), Aβ42 and p-tau (AD), and CSF/serum albumin ratio (blood-brain barrier integrity). Analyses included regression models and stratification by sex. Results: Overall, 410 participants (53%, n=196 women) had MetS. MetS was associated with increased odds of overall (OR=2.0, 95%CI 1.4–2.9) and AD-related (OR=1.8, 95%CI 1.4–2.6) neurodegeneration, high SVD burden (presence of ≥3 SVD compared to none: OR=2.1, 95%CI 1.1–4.3), and white-matter microstructural changes. Within the SVD markers, MetS was particularly related to white matter hyperintensities, lacunes, and perivascular spaces in basal ganglia. Furthermore, MetS was associated with alterations of blood-brain barrier integrity in the CSF subsample. Sex differences showed increased SVD burden in men with MetS, especially enlarged perivascular spaces (OR=2.9, 95%CI 1.7–5.0), while no differences were observed in women. No associations were detected with amyloid and tau. Discussion: MetS in late life is linked to neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular pathologies, with SVD more prominent in men with MetS, but not in women.

Abstract: Introduction: Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) have shown that several genes, beside the “high-effect” APOE gene, are involved in modulating the risk of dementia and longevity, and some of these genes overlap between the traits. Considering longevity, there are also associations with genes related to other age-related disorders, such as diabetes and cancer. Previous studies have shown associations between genetics of dementia and longevity and measures reflecting brain age, but the vast majority of these studies were performed in age heterogeneous samples. The aim of our study is to investigate how polygenic scores for dementia, general cognitive function, and longevity, associate with predicted biological brain age in 70-year-olds from the general population. Methods: The study sample included 710 individuals from the Gothenburg H70 1944 cohort with data on genetics and MRI (after QC). Polygenic scores (for longevity, general cognitive function, and Alzheimer's disease) were constructed based on genetic data derived by genome-wide genotyping and summary statistics from previous GWASs. A deep learning model, developed in- house using minimally processed T1-w MRI from ∼17000 neurologically intact individuals from UK Biobank, ADNI, AIBL, and GENIC and validated via hold-out and cross-validation approaches, was applied to generate the predicted brain ages. Statistical analyses were performed using linear regression, in the total sample and after stratification by sex. Results: Higher polygenic score for longevity was associated with lower biological brain age in men (β = -0.24; SD = 0.10; p = 0.02), and higher polygenic score for general cognitive performance was associated with lower biological brain age in women (β = -0.25; SD = 0.10; p = 0.02). No associations were seen with polygenic score for Alzheimer's disease. Discussion: The results of our study indicate that genetic variation related to longevity and general cognitive performance is associated with biological brain age in 70-year-olds, but the identified associations appear to differ between the sexes. A possible explanation might be divergent pathways involved in biological aging of the brain in men and women.

Abstract: Introduction: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a known risk factor for stroke and heart failure (HF). In addition, individuals with HF have an increased risk for AF. An increasing body of evidence have also linked AF to dementia, while less is known regarding the relation between HF and dementia. We aim to investigate if higher genetic risk, measured with polygenic risk scores (PRSs), for AF and HF increases dementia and stroke risk in the general population. Methods: Data was obtained from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies. The participants were born 1930 and were systematically selected from the Swedish population register based on birth dates. The first examination was conducted at age 70 in 2000-02. Thereafter, examinations have been conducted up to age 88. Stroke diagnoses were based on self- and proxy-reports, and hospital registers. Dementia was diagnosed according to the DSM-III-R criteria based on neuropsychiatric examinations, proxy- reports, and hospital registers. The PRSs were based on summary statistics from large GWASs and include PRSs on the 5*10-8, 1*10-7, 1*10-6, 1*10-5, 1*10-4, 1*10-3, 1*10-2, and 0.1 significance levels. The PRSs were standardized, and cox-regressions adjusted for sex, inclusion year in the study, and the five first principal components were performed. Risk years from birth until development of the outcome, death, emigration, or the end of the study, were calculated. Results: A total of 984 participants, of whom 250 developed dementia and 238 developed a stroke, were included. Participants with higher HF-PRS had an increased dementia risk (HR 1.2; p=0.009) but no increased stroke risk. On the contrary, participants with higher AF-PRS had increased stroke risk (HR 1.2, p=0.032), but no increased dementia risk. Discussion: Our findings support causality between HF and dementia, while the previously shown association between AF and dementia might be explained by shared risk factors between AF and dementia, or an increased risk of stroke and HF in AF patients. However, a potential lack of an association between AF-PRS and dementia needs to be confirmed in larger studies.

Abstract: Introduction: A higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MeDi) has been associated with more brain integrity, and slower cognitive decline. In 2019, the EAT-Lancet commission presented a new, mainly plant-based healthy reference diet, aimed to be environmentally sustainable. However, health benefits of the diet have been questioned, and the impact on cognition and brain health has not been established. This cross-sectional study aims to compare the EAT-Lancet diet vs. the MeDi in relation to cognitive function and neuroimaging markers of neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular alterations among older adults. Methods: The study sample included 615 dementia-free 70-year-olds (54% women) from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort study (examined 2014–16). Dietary adherence was measured with an EAT-Lancet dietary index (score 0–42), and a MeDi index (score 0–9). The scores were transformed into z-scores to enable comparability. Brain magnetic resonance imaging measures included mean total cortical thickness (marker of overall neurodegeneration), and a global small vessel disease score (SVD score, ranged 0–3). Cognitive performance was measured with a global cognitive composite score, derived from eight cognitive tests. Linear and ordinal regression analyses were performed adjusted for sex, and multi-adjusted for potential confounders. Results: The sex-adjusted linear regression analyses showed that higher adherence to the MeDi, and to the EAT-Lancet diet were associated with better cognitive performance. After further adjusting for energy intake, physical activity, smoking status, and education, only the MeDi–cognition association remained (β: 0.071, 95% CI: 0.024–0.117, p=0.003). Furthermore, both adherence to the MeDi (β: 0.007, 95% CI: 0.000–0.013, p=0.046), and to the EAT-Lancet diet (β: 0.009, 95% CI: 0.003–0.016, p=0.005) were positively associated with cortical thickness (less atrophy) in the multi-adjusted model. The EAT-Lancet diet was associated with lower SVD burden in the sex-adjusted model (OR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.73–0.99, p=0.035), but not in the multi-adjusted model. No association was detected between the MeDi and SVD score. Discussion: Results from this study confirms previously found associations between higher adherence to a MeDi and better cognitive function and brain integrity. The findings also indicate that an environmentally sustainable diet may be beneficial for brain health.

Abstract: Abstract The relation between cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures is poorly understood in cognitively healthy individuals from the general population. Participants’ (n = 226) mean age was 70.9 years (SD = 0.4). CSF concentrations of amyloid beta (Aβ)1‐42, total tau (t‐tau), phosphorylated tau (p‐tau), neurogranin, and neurofilament light, and volumes of hippocampus, amygdala, total basal forebrain (TBF), and cortical thickness were measured. Linear associations between CSF biomarkers and MRI measures were investigated. In Aβ1‐42 positives, higher t‐tau and p‐tau were associated with smaller hippocampus (P = 0.001 and P = 0.003) and amygdala (P = 0.005 and P = 0.01). In Aβ1‐42 negatives, higher t‐tau, p‐tau, and neurogranin were associated with larger TBF volume (P = 0.001, P = 0.001, and P = 0.01). No associations were observed between the CSF biomarkers and an AD signature score of cortical thickness. AD‐specific biomarkers in cognitively healthy 70‐year‐olds may be related to TBF, hippocampus, and amygdala. Lack of association with cortical thickness might be due to early stage of disease.

Abstract: Abstract Background Neurofilament light (NfL) and neurogranin (Ng) are promising candidate AD biomarkers, reflecting axonal and synaptic damage, respectively. Since there is a need to understand the synaptic and axonal damage in preclinical Alzheimer’s disease (AD), we aimed to determine the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) levels of NfL and Ng in cognitively unimpaired elderly from the Gothenburg H70 Birth Cohort Studies classified according to the amyloid/tau/neurodegeneration (A/T/N) system. Methods The sample consisted of 258 cognitively unimpaired older adults (age 70, 129 women and 129 men) from the Gothenburg Birth Cohort Studies. 48. Longstanding smoking associated with frontal brain lobe atrophy: a 32-year follow-up study in women

Abstract: Objective To examine the association between midlife tobacco smoking and late-life brain atrophy and white matter lesions.Methods The study includes 369 women from the Prospective Population Study of Women in Gothenburg, Sweden. Cigarette smoking was reported at baseline 1968 (mean age=44 years) and at follow-up in 1974–1975 and 1980–1981. CT of the brain was conducted 32 years after baseline examination (mean age=76 years) to evaluate cortical atrophy and white matter lesions. Multiple logistic regressions estimated associations between midlife smoking and late-life brain lesions. The final analyses were adjusted for alcohol consumption and several other covariates.Results Smoking in 1968–1969 (adjusted OR 1.85; 95% CI 1.12 to 3.04), in 1974–1975 (OR 2.37; 95% CI 1.39 to 4.04) and in 1980–1981 (OR 2.47; 95% CI 1.41 to 4.33) were associated with late-life frontal lobe atrophy (2000–2001). The strongest association was observed in women who reported smoking at all three midlife examinations (OR 2.63; 95% CI 1.44 to 4.78) and in those with more frequent alcohol consumption (OR 6.02; 95% CI 1.74 to 20.84). Smoking in 1980–1981 was also associated with late-life parietal lobe atrophy (OR 1.99; 95% CI 1.10 to 3.58). There were no associations between smoking and atrophy in the temporal or occipital lobe, or with white matter lesions.Conclusion Longstanding tobacco smoking was mainly associated with atrophy in the frontal lobe cortex. A long-term stimulation of nicotine receptors in the frontal neural pathway might be harmful for targeted brain cell.

Abstract: We report the first experimental evidence of spontaneous electron emission from a homonuclear dimer anion through direct measurements of $\rm{Ag}_2^- \rightarrow \rm{Ag}_2 + \rm{e}^-$ decays on milliseconds and seconds time scales. This observation is very surprising as there is no avoided crossing between adiabatic energy curves to mediate such a process. The process is weak but yet dominates the decay signal after 100 ms when ensembles of internally hot Ag$_2^-$ ions are stored in the cryogenic ion-beam storage ring, DESIREE, for 10 seconds. The electron emission process is associated with an instantaneous, very large, reduction of the vibrational energy of the dimer system. This represents a dramatic deviation from a Born-Oppenheimer description of dimer dynamics.

Abstract: Ultraslow radiative cooling lifetimes and adiabatic detachment energies for three astrochemically relevant anions, C$_n^-$ ($n=3-5$), are measured using the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment (DESIREE) infrastructure at Stockholm University. DESIREE maintains a background pressure of $\approx$10$^{-14}$\,mbar and temperature of $\approx$13\,K, allowing storage of mass-selected ions for hours and providing conditions coined a "molecular cloud in a box". Here, we construct two-dimensional (2D) photodetachment spectra for the target anions by recording photodetachment signal as a function of irradiation wavelength and ion storage time (seconds to minute timescale). Ion cooling lifetimes, which are associated with infrared radiative emission, are extracted from the 2D photodetachment spectrum for each ion by tracking the disappearance of vibrational hot-band signal with ion storage time, giving $\frac{1}{e}$ cooling lifetimes of 3.1$\pm$0.1\,s (C$_3^-$), 6.8$\pm$0.5\,s (C$_4^-$) and 24$\pm$5\,s (C$_5^-$). Fits of the photodetachment spectra for cold ions, i.e. those stored for at least 30\,s, provides adiabatic detachment energies in good agreement with values from laser photoelectron spectroscopy. Ion cooling lifetimes are simulated using a Simple Harmonic Cascade model, finding good agreement with experiment and providing a mode-by-mode understanding of the radiative cooling properties. The 2D photodetachment strategy and radiative cooling modeling developed in this study could be applied to investigate the ultraslow cooling dynamics of wide range of molecular anions.
