3. The Impact of Gamification on Learning Outcomes of Computer Science Majors

Abstract

Gamification is the use of game elements in domains other than games. Gamification use is often suggested for difficult activities because it enhances users' engagement and motivation level. Due to such benefits, the use of gamification is also proposed in education environments to improve students' performance, engagement, and satisfaction. Computer science in higher education is a tough area of study and thus needs to utilize various already explored benefits of gamification. This research develops an empirical study to evaluate the effectiveness of gamification in teaching computer science in higher education. Along with the learning outcomes, the effect of group size on students' satisfaction level is also measured. Furthermore, the impact of gamification over time is analyzed throughout a semester to observe its effectiveness as a long-term learning technique. The analysis, covering both learning outcome and students' satisfaction, suggests that gamification is an effective tool to teach tough courses at higher education level; however, group size should be taken into account for optimal classroom size and better learning experience.

Abstract

A massive number of daily spam demands a method of anti-spam filtering that can efficiently detect unsolicited emails. Traditional spam filtering techniques block spam at receiver's side, unable to stop their propagation on the network, resulting in wastage of network bandwidth, processing power, and disk space. To address these issues, this paper proposes a methodology for sender oriented anti-spamming that identifies and filters spam at its origin, thus not only discourages spam but also reduces the resource wastage. To the best of our knowledge, addressing this wastage by spam has not been done before. Along with blocking spam at origin, this research proposes a diagonal hash algorithm to optimize image spam filtering, and email hash token generator to promote email authentication and discourage zombie accounts. Experiments suggest that the proposed technique has the potential to achieve better performance and accuracy compared to the current approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Distributed Embedded Real-Time Systems (DERTS), one of the most dynamic systems are setting trend of moving away from centralized, high cost products towards low cost and high volume products. The non-functional constraints and the device heterogeneity lead to system complexity. In this regard, Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is the best methodology for developing loosely coupled, dynamic, flexible, distributed and cost effective application. SOA relies heavily on services and the semantic web handles the application complexity and heterogeneity with the help of ontology. With an ever-increasing number of functional similar web services in central repository, only functional descriptions of web services is not sufficient in the discovery process. It is also difficult to rank the similar services based on their functionality. Therefore, the Quality of Service (QoS) description of web services plays an important role in ranking services within many similar functional services. Context-awareness has been widely studied in embedded and real-time systems can also play an important role in services ranking as an additional set of criteria. In order to address the issues of complexity and ranking similar services based on the QoS and context-awareness, we have compared the existing work based on some of the important requirements of dynamic environments.
