Abstract: The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., Comment: Invited Talk given at the Conference Nuclear Physice in Astrophysics VI (NPA6), Lisbon, Portugal, May 19-24 2013. Abstract: The possibility of measuring the proton electromagnetic form factors in the time-like region at FAIR with the \PANDA detector is discussed. Detailed simulations on signal efficiency for the annihilation of $\bar p +p $ into a lepton pair as well as for the most important background channels have been performed. It is shown that precision measurements of the differential cross section of the reaction $\bar p +p \to e^++ e^-$ can be obtained in a wide angular and kinematical range. The individual determination of the moduli of the electric and magnetic proton form factors will be possible up to a value of momentum transfer squared of $q^2\simeq 14$ (GeV/c)$^2$. The total $\bar p +p\to e^++e^-$ cross section will be measured up to $q^2\simeq 28$ (GeV/c)$^2$. The results obtained from simulated events are compared to the existing data. Abstract: To study fundamental questions of hadron and nuclear physics in interactions of antiprotons with nucleons and nuclei, the universal PANDA detector will be built. Gluonic excitations, the physics of strange and charm quarks and nucleon structure studies will be performed with unprecedented accuracy thereby allowing high-precision tests of the strong interaction. The proposed PANDA detector is a state-of-the art internal target detector at the HESR at FAIR allowing the detection and identification of neutral and charged particles generated within the relevant angular and energy range. 6. Single electron response and energy resolution of a Micromegas detector

Abstract: Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors (MPGDs) such as Micromegas or GEM are used in particle physics experiments for their capabilities in particle tracking at high rates. Their excellent position resolutions are well known but their energy characteristics have been less studied. The energy resolution is mainly affected by the ionisation processes and detector gain fluctuations. This paper presents a method to separetely measure those two contributions to the energy resolution of a Micromegas detector. The method relies on the injection of a controlled number of electrons. The Micromegas has a 1.6-mm drift zone and a 160-$\mu$m amplification gap. It is operated in Ne 95%-iC$\mathrm{_4}$H$\mathrm{_{10}}$ 5% at atmospheric pressure. The electrons are generated by non-linear photoelectric emission issued from the photons of a pulsed 337-nm wavelength laser coupled to a focusing system. The single electron response has been measured at different gains (3.7 10$\mathrm{^4}$, 5.0 10$\mathrm{^4}$ and 7.0 10$\mathrm{^4}$) and is fitted with a good agreement by a Polya distribution. From those fits, a relative gain variance of 0.31$\pm$0.02 is deduced. The setup has also been characterised at several voltages by fitting the energy resolution measured as a function of the number of primary electrons, ranging from 5 up to 210. Abstract: The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process, β-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. Abstract: The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. Abstract: In gaseous detectors, spatial and energy resolutions are limited by the gain fluctuations. We have measured the single electron response of a Micromegas detector and also its energy resolution as a function of the number of electrons by means of a point-like electron source. A pulsed nitrogen UV laser is focused on the drift electrode made of a thin metal layer deposited on a quartz lamina, creating with an accuracy of 1 micron a spot of an adjustable and well known number of photoelectrons, with a transverse size smaller than 100 microns. With a drift distance of 3 mm, and a Ne-isobutane (90-10%) gas mixture the transverse diffusion is 200 microns rms. The avalanche in the multiplication gap induces charge on the anode made of 128 strips with a 338 microns pitch. For the single electron measurements, the total number of electrons is about 150, in such a way that the corresponding number of electrons contributing to a signal on a strip located at a transverse distance of 4-5 standard deviations from the spot is never greater than one.

Abstract: We present final analyis results of cosmic ray data taken with a Large-Area Micromegas TPC by the Berkeley-Orsay-Saclay (BOS) collaboration. The TPC gas chamber for these R&D studies was 50 cm diameter and 50 cm long and was operated with three gas mixtures, Ar:CF4 3%, Ar:CH4 (P10) and Ar:Isobutane 5% in magnetic fields up to 2 tesla. A large-area, 38 cm diameter, copper Micromegas electro-mesh with 60 micron pitch, and 50 micron mesh to anode pad plane gap provided gains up to 3000. Over 1000 channels of TPC readout electronics, with 1X10 and 2X10 mm^2 anode pads, have been used to cover the detector area. The detector ran very smoothly with excellent gain uniformity. Precision measurements of drift velocity, transverse and longitudinal diffusion, and electron attachment have been made and compared to MagBoltz simulations. We have obtained a Micromegas TPC extrapolated zero-drift, point resolution of 50 microns. We compare the measured resolution dependence on drift distance, up to 50 cm, to parameterized simulations of the drift and avalanche of individual ionization electrons for the gases studied. We show expectations for a large gaseous International Linear Collider (ILC) detector based on a 1.7-2 m radius TPC tracking chamber, operating at 1 atmosphere in a magnetic field of 3-4 tesla with electron drifts up to 2.5 m.

Abstract: To probe the ground state and transition densities, elastic and inelastic scattering on a proton target were measured in inverse kinematics for the unstable C-10 and C-11 nuclei at 45.3 and 40.6 MeV/nucleon, respectively. The detection of the recoil proton was performed by the MUST telescope array, in coincidence with a wall of scintillators for the quasiprojectile. The differential cross sections for elastic and inelastic scattering to the first excited states are compared to the optical model calculations performed within the framework of the microscopic nucleon-nucleus Jeukenne-Lejeune-Mahaux potential. Elastic scattering is sensitive to the matter-root-mean square radius found to be 2.42 +/- 0.1 and 2.33 +/- 0.1 fm, for C-10,C-11, respectively. The transition densities from cluster and mean-field models are tested, and the cluster model predicts the correct order of magnitude of cross sections for the transitions of both isotopes. Using the Bohr-Mottelson prescription, a profile for the C-10 transition density from the 0(+) ground to the 2(1)(+) state is deduced from the data.
