Abstract

A serious concern about the sustainability of existing production systems has resulted from the low profitability of agriculture and the deterioration of the natural resource base. As a result of these concerns, increased attention has been given to alternative farming practices in order to decrease the use of fossil fuels, to enhance the efficiency of nitrogen fertilization, and to increase the implementation of conservation tillage practices. Farmers are recommended to include pulse crop into their rotation since legumes form symbiotic associations with bacteria that can fix atmospheric N2 reducing the need of nitrogen fertilizer application and the emission of greenhouse gas (GHG) production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the economics of greenhouse gas mitigation for different cropping systems and management practices. Data from a 5-year study of a wheat-pea rotation, under different seeding systems and fertilizer and herbicide rates, was used to examine economic and greenhouse gas performance. Based on IPCC estimations of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, comparisons were made to measured N2O rates to determine if the difference between these figures were significant. Comparison of actual measured N2O emissions to estimations based on IPCC indicated that the measure emission rate was significantly lower than estimated values for the site. Results for low-fertilizer rates, under a low-disturbance system, suggests there is greater net carbon fixed as compared to the high-disturbance practices in both wheat and pea. Overall, the decreased use of fertilizer (50% to 75% of recommended rates) under a low-disturbance seeding-system was preferable, based upon environmental-economic indicators.

Abstract

The Canadian prairies traditionally have been dominated by spring wheat production. Crop diversification is now being advocated to enhance farm-level risk management, ecological benefits, nutrient cycling, and pest and disease control, and to reduce the farm economy’s reliance on income from a single crop. There has always been interest in diversifying away from wheat, but until recently, economically feasible alternatives have been limited, and government policies may have constrained the shift to other crops. Knowing the impact of prices and policies on crop diversification is essential to understanding producer response and to determining strategies to enhance cropping diversity.

16. Durum Wheat Productivity in Response to Soil Water and Soil Residual Nitrogen Associated with Previous Crop Management.

Abstract

Green manure may have potential uses in dryland agroecosystems. This study determined the effect of green manure on residual soil water and soil N and the subsequent durum wheat (Triticum turgidum L.) performance in comparison with the effect of preceding dry pea (Pisum sativum L.), silage pea (Pisum sativum L.), and spring wheat (T. aestivum L.). Three green manures [black lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.), chickling vetch (Lathyrus sativus L.), and forage pea (Pisum sativum L.)] were grown in 2006, 2007, and 2008, along with pea, wheat, and a summerfallow (check) in Saskatchewan, Canada. Durum wheat was grown the year after these treatments. At durum wheat planting, the green manure treatments had the same amount of water in the 0- to 1.2-m soil profile as the summerfallow in 2007 and 2009 but less water compared with the summerfallow in 2008. Summerfallow provided highest soil N among all treatments in 2007 and 2008 but lower soil N than green manure treatments in 2009. Green manure treatments increased subsequent durum wheat grain yield by 19% compared with preceding silage pea or dry pea and by 54% compared with preceding spring wheat but decreased yield by 12% compared with summerfallow treatments. The green manure with late planting and termination enhanced soil-water conservation and offered input-saving advantages compared with the early- and mid-planting and termination treatments. Overall, green manure treatments enhanced soil water storage, provided N benefits, and increased subsequent durum wheat yield compared with crops harvested for grain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

20. Grain Yield and Quality of Organic Crops Grown under Reduced Tillage and Diversified Sequences

Abstract

Because of the increased consumer demand for organic products and expansion of organic production in the Canadian Prairies, development of organic cropping systems that help lower production costs and risks, while improving productivity and environmental sustainability is needed. A trial was conducted in the Brown soil zone (2010-2015) to examine tillage intensity (low vs. high) in a simplified (wheat [Triticum aestivum L.]-green manure), and a diversified (wheat-oilseed-pulse-green manure) cropping system. Above-average precipitation in the years this trial was run resulted in high weed infestations and persistent increases in perennial weeds over time, especially under low tillage. Grain yield was highest at the beginning of the trial (2010 and 2011), and lowest in its final year (2015), which was drier than the rest. Yield variation was explained more by precipitation and soil nitrate levels than by weed infestations. Overall, wheat yields were higher under high than low tillage, and in the simplified than the diversified rotation. Over the duration of this trial, yields under low tillage averaged about three quarters of the yield in a nearby conventional zero-till trial. Protein concentration in wheat grain varied among years, and there was no negative association with yield, which might be explained by the release of mineralized ? throughout the growing season. Protein was similar or higher than the average for commercial conventional wheat in this area. Abstract

The article discusses a study that assessed potential impacts of climate change on biofuel wheat production in southern Saskatchewan using the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer-Cropping System Model (DSSAT-CSM). The model simulated biomass and grain yield under three climate change scenarios in the 2050s. DSSAT-CSM predicted increases in biomass and grain yield but model modification is needed to improve the prediction of climate change impacts on biofuel wheat production.

The level and distribution of the social benefits from public investment in Canadian wheat breeding research and extension activities are examined for the period 1946 to 1979. In addition, average and marginal rates of return are calculated. The results reveal that society has benefited substantially from such public investments, with producers receiving the greatest share of the benefits.
