We present a study on rotation measure (RM) of the quasar 3C 273. This analysis aims to discern the magnetic field structure and its temporal evolution. The quasar 3C 273 is one of the most studied active galactic nuclei due to its high brightness, strong polarization, and proximity, which enables resolving the transverse structure of its jet in detail. We used polarized data from 2014, collected at six frequencies (5, 8, 15, 22, 43, 86 GHz) with the Very Long Baseline Array, to produce total and linear polarization intensity images, as well as RM maps. Our analysis reveals a well-defined transverse RM gradient across the jet, indicating a helical, ordered magnetic field that threads the jet and likely contributes to its collimation. Furthermore, we identified temporal variations in the RM magnitude when compared with prior observations. These temporal variations show that the environment around the jet is dynamic, with changes in the density and magnetic field strength of the sheath that are possibly caused by interactions with the surrounding medium.

The advancement of the Event Horizon Telescope has enabled the study of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei down to sub-parsec linear scales even at high redshift. Quasi-simultaneous multifrequency observations provide insights into the physical conditions in compact regions and allow testing accretion theories. Initially we aimed at measuring the magnetic field strength close to the central supermassive black hole in NRAO 530 (1730-130) by studying frequency-dependent opacity of the jet matter, Faraday rotation and the spectral index in the mm-radio bands. NRAO 530 was observed quasi-simultaneously at 15, 22, 43, 86, and 227 GHz at four different very long baseline interferometer (VLBI) networks. By the means of imaging and model-fitting, we aligned the images, taken at different frequencies. We explored opacity along the jet and distribution of the linearly polarized emission in it. Our findings reveal that the jet of NRAO 530 at 86 and 227 GHz is transparent down to its origin, with 70 mJy emission detected at 227 GHz potentially originating from the accretion disk. The magnetic field strength near the black hole, estimated at $5r_\mathrm{g}$, is $3\times10^3-3\times10^4$ G (depending on the central black hole mass). These values represent some of the highest magnetic field strengths reported for active galaxies. We also report the first ever VLBI measurement of the Faraday rotation at 43-227 GHz, which reveals rotation measure values as high as -48000 rad/m2 consistent with higher particle density and stronger magnetic fields at the jet's outset. In 2017, the next generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) Science Advisory Council, together with the international astronomy community, developed a set of five Key Science Goals (KSGs) to inform, prioritize and refine the technical capabilities of a future radio telescope array for high angular resolution operation from 1.2 - 116 GHz with 10 times the sensitivity of the Jansky VLA and ALMA. The resulting KSGs, which require observations at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths that cannot be achieved by any other facility, represent a small subset of the broad range of astrophysical problems that the ngVLA will be able address. This document presents an update to the original ngVLA KSGs, taking account of new results and progress in the 7+ years since their initial presentation, again drawing on the expertise of the ngVLA Science Advisory Council and the broader community in the ngVLA Science Working Groups. As the design of the ngVLA has also matured substantially in this period, this document also briefly addresses initial expectations for ngVLA data products and processing that will be needed to achieve the KSGs. The original ngVLA KSGs endure as outstanding problems of high priority. One of the most well-known extragalactic sources in the sky, quasar 3C 454.3, shows a curved parsec-scale jet that has been exhaustively monitored with very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) over the recent years. In this work, we present a comprehensive analysis of four years of high-frequency VLBI observations at 43 GHz and 86 GHz, between 2013-2017, in total intensity and linear polarization. The images obtained from these observations enabled us to study the jet structure and the magnetic field topology of the source on spatial scales down to 4.6 parsec in projected distance. The kinematic analysis reveals the abrupt vanishing of at least four new superluminal jet features in a characteristic jet region (i.e., region C), which is located at an approximate distance of 0.6 milliarcseconds from the VLBI core. Our results support a model in which the jet bends, directing the relativistic plasma flow almost perfectly toward our line of sight, co-spatially with the region where components appear to stop., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

We discuss first results from hidden photon dark matter searches made with a prototype of the Broadband Radiometric Axion/ALPs Search Setup (BRASS-p) in the range of particle mass of 49.63-74.44 $\mu$eV (frequency range of 12-18 GHz). The conceptual design of BRASS and a detailed description of its present prototype, BRASS-p, are given, with a view of the potential application of such setups to hidden photon, axion, and axion-like particle (ALP) dark matter searches using heterodyne detectors in the range of particle mass from 40$\mu$eV to 4000$\mu$eV (10 GHz to 1 THz). Pioneering measurements made with BRASS-p achieve the record sensitivity of (0.3--1.0)$\times$$10^{-13}$ to the kinetic mixing between the normal and hidden photons, assuming the dark matter is made entirely of unpolarized hidden photons. Based on these results, a discussion of further prospects for dark matter searches using the BRASS-p apparatus is presented., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures. Prepared for submission to JCAP

The technique of frequency phase transfer (FPT), enabled by multiband receivers with shared optical path (SOP), is set to become a true backbone of VLBI operations at frequencies above 22 GHz. The FPT has been successfully implemented at the Korean VLBI Network (KVN), while gaining ever more prominent attention worldwide. Over the next few years, FPT VLBI at 22/43/86 GHz will become feasible at more than ten telescopes in Eurasia and Australia. This development would bring order of magnitude improvements of sensitivity and dynamic range of VLBI imaging at 86 GHz and deliver astrometric measurements with an accuracy of one microsecond of arc. The resulting exceptional discovery potential would strongly impact a number of scientific fields ranging from fundamental cosmology and black hole physics to stellar astrophysics and studies of transient phenomena. Mid-Infrared (MIR) images of the Galactic center show extended gas and dust features along with bright IRS sources. Some of these dust features are a part of ionized clumpy streamers orbiting Sgr~A*, known as the mini-spiral. We present their proper motions over 12 year time period and report their flux densities in $N$-band filters {and derive their spectral indices}. The observations were carried out by VISIR at ESO VLT. High-pass filtering led to the detection of several resolved filaments and clumps along the mini-spiral. Each source was fit by a 2-D Gaussian profile to determine the offsets and aperture sizes. We perform aperture photometry to extract fluxes in two different bands. We present the proper motions of the largest consistent set of resolved and reliably determined sources. In addition to stellar orbital motions, we identify a stream-like motion of extended clumps along the mini-spiral. We also detect MIR counterparts of the radio tail components of the IRS7 source. They show a clear kinematical deviation with respect to the star. They likely represent Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities formed downstream in the shocked stellar wind. We also analyze the shape and the orientation of the extended late-type IRS3 star that is consistent with the ALMA sub-mm detection of the source. Its puffed-up envelope with the radius of $\sim 2\times 10^6\,R_{\odot}$ could be the result of the red-giant collision with a nuclear jet, which was followed by the tidal prolongation along the orbit., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The collimation of relativistic jets launched from the vicinity of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centers of active galactic nuclei (AGN) is one of the key questions to understand the nature of AGN jets. However, little is known about the detailed jet structure for AGN like quasars since very high angular resolutions are required to resolve these objects. We present very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of the archetypical quasar 3C 273 at 86 GHz, performed with the Global Millimeter VLBI Array, for the first time including the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Our observations achieve a high angular resolution down to $\sim$60 ${\rm \mu}$as, resolving the innermost part of the jet ever on scales of $\sim 10^5$ Schwarzschild radii. Our observations, including close-in-time High Sensitivity Array observations of 3C 273 at 15, 22, and 43 GHz, suggest that the inner jet collimates parabolically, while the outer jet expands conically, similar to jets from other nearby low luminosity AGN. We discovered the jet collimation break around $10^{7}$ Schwarzschild radii, providing the first compelling evidence for structural transition in a quasar jet. The location of the collimation break for 3C 273 is farther downstream the sphere of gravitational influence (SGI) from the central SMBH. With the results for other AGN jets, our results show that the end of the collimation zone in AGN jets is governed not only by the SGI of the SMBH but also by the more diverse properties of the central nuclei., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the first polarimetric space VLBI observations of OJ 287, observed with RadioAstron at 22 GHz during a perigee session on 2014 April 4 and five near-in-time snapshots, together with contemporaneous ground VLBI observations at 15, 43, and 86 GHz. Ground-space fringes were obtained up to a projected baseline of 3.9 Earth diameters during the perigee session, and at a record 15.1 Earth diameters during the snapshot sessions, allowing us to image the innermost jet at an angular resolution of $\sim50\mu$as, the highest ever achieved at 22 GHz for OJ 287. Comparison with ground-based VLBI observations reveals a progressive jet bending with increasing angular resolution that agrees with predictions from a supermassive binary black hole model, although other models cannot be ruled out. Spectral analyses suggest that the VLBI core is dominated by the internal energy of the emitting particles during the onset of a multi-wavelength flare, while the parsec-scale jet is consistent with being in equipartition between the particles and magnetic field. Estimated minimum brightness temperatures from the visibility amplitudes show a continued rising trend with projected baseline length up to $10^{13}$ K, reconciled with the inverse Compton limit through Doppler boosting for a jet closely oriented to the line of sight. The observed electric vector position angle suggests that the innermost jet has a predominantly toroidal magnetic field, which together with marginal evidence of a gradient in rotation measure across the jet width indicate that the VLBI core is threaded by a helical magnetic field, in agreement with jet formation models.

3C 84 (NGC 1275) is the radio source at the center of the Perseus Cluster and exhibits a bright radio jet. We observed the source with the Global Millimeter VLBI Array (GMVA) between 2008 and 2015, with a typical angular resolution of $\sim$50 $\mu$as. The observations revealed a consistent double nuclear structure separated by $\sim$770 gravitational radii assuming a Black Hole mass of 3.2 $\times 10^{8}$ $M_{\odot}$. The region is likely too broad and bright to be the true jet base anchored in the accretion disk or Black Hole ergosphere. A cone and parabola were fit to the stacked (time averaged) image of the nuclear region. The data did not strongly prefer either fit, but combined with a jet/counter-jet ratio analysis, an upper limit on the viewing angle to the inner jet region of $\leq$35$^{\circ}$ was found. This provides evidence for a variation of the viewing angle along the jet (and therefore a bent jet) within $\sim$0.5 parsec of the jet launching region. In the case of a conical jet, the apex is located $\sim$2400 gravitational radii upstream of the bright nuclear region and up to $\sim$600 gravitational radii upstream in the parabolic case. We found a possible correlation between the brightness temperature and relative position angle of the double nuclear components, which may indicate rotation within the jet.

The "Space VLBI 2020: Science and Technology Futures" meeting was the second in The Future of High-Resolution Radio Interferometry in Space series. The first meeting (2018 September 5--6; Noordwijk, the Netherlands) focused on the full range of science applications possible for very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) with space-based antennas. Accordingly, the observing frequencies (wavelengths) considered ranged from below 1~MHz (> 300 m) to above 300~GHz (< 1 mm). For this second meeting, the focus was narrowed to mission concepts and the supporting technologies to enable the highest angular resolution observations at frequencies of 30~GHz and higher (< 1 cm). This narrowing of focus was driven by both scientific and technical considerations. First, results from the RadioAstron mission and the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) have generated considerable excitement for studying the inner portions of black hole (BH) accretion disks and jets and testing elements of the General Theory of Relativity (GR). Second, the technologies and requirements involved in space-based VLBI differ considerably between 100~MHz and 100~GHz; a related consideration is that there are a number of existing instruments or mission concepts for frequencies of approximately 100~MHz and below, while it has been some time since attention has been devoted to space VLBI at frequencies above 10~GHz. We present total and linearly polarized 3 mm Global mm-VLBI Array images of a sample of blazars and radio galaxies from the VLBA-BU-BLAZAR 7 mm monitoring program designed to probe the innermost regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) jets and locate the sites of gamma-ray emission observed by the Fermi-LAT. The lower opacity at 3 mm and improved angular resolution, on the order of 50 microarcseconds, allow us to distinguish features in the jet not visible in the 7 mm VLBA data. We report serendipitous detections of line emission with ALMA in band 3, 6, and 7 in the central parsec of the Galactic center at an up to now highest resolution (<0.7''). Among the highlights are the very first and highly resolved images of sub-mm molecular emission of CS, H13CO+, HC3N, SiO, SO, C2H, and CH3OH in the immediate vicinity (~1'' in projection) of Sgr A* and in the circumnuclear disk (CND). The central association (CA) of molecular clouds shows three times higher CS/X (X: any other observed molecule) luminosity ratios than the CND suggesting a combination of higher excitation - by a temperature gradient and/or IR-pumping - and abundance enhancement due to UV- and/or X-ray emission. We conclude that the CA is closer to the center than the CND is and could be an infalling clump consisting of denser cloud cores embedded in diffuse gas. Moreover, we identified further regions in and outside the CND that are ideally suited for future studies in the scope of hot/cold core and extreme PDR/XDR chemistry and consequent star formation in the central few parsecs.

The Dusty S-cluster Object (DSO/G2) orbiting the supermassive black hole (Sgr A*) in the Galactic centre has been monitored in both near-infrared continuum and line emission. There has been a dispute about the character and the compactness of the object: interpreting it as either a gas cloud or a dust-enshrouded star. A recent analysis of polarimetry data in $K_{\rm s}$-band ($2.2\,{\rm \mu m}$) allows us to put further constraints on the geometry of the DSO. The purpose of this paper is to constrain the nature and the geometry of the DSO. We compare 3D radiative transfer models of the DSO with the NIR continuum data including polarimetry. In the analysis, we use basic dust continuum radiative transfer theory implemented in the 3D Monte Carlo code Hyperion. Moreover, we implement analytical results of the two-body problem mechanics and the theory of non-thermal processes. We present a composite model of the DSO -- a dust-enshrouded star that consists of a stellar source, dusty, optically thick envelope, bipolar cavities, and a bow shock. This scheme can match the NIR total as well as polarized properties of the observed spectral energy distribution (SED). The SED may be also explained in theory by a young pulsar wind nebula that typically exhibits a large linear polarization degree due to magnetospheric synchrotron emission. The analysis of NIR polarimetry data combined with the radiative transfer modelling shows that the DSO is a peculiar source of compact nature in the S cluster $(r \lesssim 0.04\,{\rm pc})$. It is most probably a young stellar object embedded in a non-spherical dusty envelope, whose components include optically thick dusty envelope, bipolar cavities, and a bow shock. We report serendipitous detections of line emission with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in band 3, 6, and 7 in the central parsec down to within 1" around Sgr A* at an up to now highest resolution (<0.5") view of the Galactic Center (GC) in the sub-millimeter (sub-mm) domain. From the 100 GHz continuum and the H39\alpha emission we obtain a uniform electron temperature around 6000 K for the minispiral. The spectral index of Sgr A* is ~ 0.5 at 100 - 250 GHz and ~ 0.0 at 230 - 340 GHz. The bright sources in the center show spectral indices around -0.1 implying Bremsstrahlung emission, while dust emission is emerging in the minispiral exterior. Apart from CS, which is most widespread in the center, H13CO+, HC3N, SiO, SO, C2H, CH3OH, 13CS and N2H+ are also detected. The bulk of the clumpy emission regions is at positive velocities and in a region confined by the minispiral northern arm, bar and the sources IRS 3 and 7. Although partly spatially overlapping with the radio recombination line (RRL) emission at same negative velocities, the relation to the minispiral remains unclear. A likely explanation is an infalling clump consisting of denser cloud cores embedded in diffuse gas. The central association of clouds (CA) shows three times higher CS/X (X: any other observed molecule) ratios than the circumnuclear disk (CND) suggesting a combination of higher excitation, by a temperature gradient and/or IR-pumping, and abundance enhancement due to UV- and/or X-ray emission. Hence, we conclude that this CA is closer to the center than the CND is to the center. Heterodyne receivers register the sky signal on either a circular polarization basis (where it is split into left-hand and right-hand circular polarization) or a linear polarization basis (where it is split into horizontal and vertical linear polarization). We study the problem of interferometric observations performed with telescopes that observe on different polarization bases, hence producing visibilities that we call "mixed basis" (i.e., linear in one telescope and circular in the other). We present novel algorithms for the proper calibration and treatment of such interferometric observations and test our algorithms with both simulations and real data. The use of our algorithms will be important for the optimum calibration of forthcoming observations with the Atacama Large mm/submm Array (ALMA) in very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) mode. Our algorithms will also allow us to optimally calibrate future VLBI observations at very high data rates (i.e., wide bandwidths), where linear-polarization feeds will be preferable at some stations, to overcome the polarimetric limitations due to the use of quarter-wave plates., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 9 pages, 5 figures

We aim to unveil the most massive central cluster black holes in the universe. We present a new search strategy which is based on a black hole mass gain sensitive 'calorimeter' and which links the innermost stellar density profile of a galaxy to the adiabatic growth of its central SMBH. In a first step we convert observationally inferred feedback powers into SMBH growth rates by using reasonable energy conversion efficiency parameters, $\epsilon$. In the main part of this paper we use these black hole growth rates, sorted in logarithmically increasing steps encompassing our whole parameter space, to conduct $N$-Body computations of brightest cluster galaxies with the newly developed MUESLI software. For the initial setup of galaxies we use core-Sersic models in order to account for SMBH scouring. We find that adiabatically driven core re-growth is significant at the highest accretion rates. As a result, the most massive black holes should be located in BCGs with less pronounced cores when compared to the predictions of empirical scaling relations which are usually calibrated in less extreme environments. For efficiency parameters $\epsilon<0.1$, BCGs in the most massive, relaxed and X-ray luminous galaxy clusters might even develop steeply rising density cusps. Finally, we discuss several promising candidates for follow up investigations, among them the nuclear black hole in the Phoenix cluster. We report on 230 GHz (1.3 mm) VLBI observations of M87 with the Event Horizon Telescope using antennas on Mauna Kea in Hawaii, Mt. Graham in Arizona and Cedar Flat in California. For the first time, we have acquired 230 GHz VLBI interferometric phase information on M87 through measurement of closure phase on the triangle of long baselines. Most of the measured closure phases are consistent with 0$^{\circ}$ as expected by physically-motivated models for 230 GHz structure such as jet models and accretion disk models. The brightness temperature of the event-horizon-scale structure is $\sim 1 \times 10^{10}$ K derived from the compact flux density of $\sim 1$ Jy and the angular size of $\sim 40 $ $\rm \mu$as $\sim$ 5.5 $R_{{\rm s}}$, which is broadly consistent with the peak brightness of the radio cores at 1-86 GHz located within $\sim 10^2$ $R_{{\rm s}}$. Our observations occurred in the middle of an enhancement in very-high-energy (VHE) $\rm \gamma$-ray flux, presumably originating in the vicinity of the central black hole. The Global mm-VLBI Array (GMVA) is the highest angular resolution imaging interferometer currently available as a common user facility. It is capable of angular resolutions on the order of 40 microarcseconds. Currently 14 stations in the United States and Europe participate in global 3 mm VLBI observations. The GMVA is used for continuum and spectroscopic imaging, probing the central regions of active galaxies and the origin of jets as these regions are typically not observable at longer wavelengths due to synchrotron self-absorption. In early 2012, fringes were detected to the three stations of the Korean VLBI Network (KVN), opening the possibility of extending the baseline coverage of the VLBI array to the East. The cross-correlation of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 with the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-Centimeters survey allows for a multiwavelength statistical study of radio-optical galaxy properties on a very large number of sources. The correlation we find between $L_{[20 cm]}/L_{[H\alpha]}$ and optical emission line ratios suggests that the origin of the emission in powerful radio-galaxies is of nuclear rather than of stellar origin. In particular, the spectroscopic classification in Seyferts, Low Ionization Narrow Emission Regions (LINERs) and star-forming galaxies provided by emission-line diagnostic diagrams peaks on the AGN region for higher $L_{[20 cm]}/L_{[H\alpha]}$ values. The trend differs from Seyferts to LINERs. The [NII]/H$\alpha$ vs. equivalent width of the H$\alpha$ line diagram confirms the LINER classification for most of those that have been identified with the traditional diagnostic diagrams. A new paradigm for active galactic jet kinematics has emerged through detailed investigations of BL Lac objects using very long baseline radio interferometry. In this new scheme, most, if not all, jet components appear to remain stationary with respect to the core but show significant non-radial motions. This paper presents results from our kinematic investigation of the jets of a statistically complete sample of radio-loud flat-spectrum active galaxies, focusing on the comparison between the jet kinematic properties of BL Lacs and flat-spectrum radio-quasars. It is shown that there is a statistically significant difference between the kinematics of the two AGN classes, with BL Lacs showing more bent jets, that are wider and show slower movement along the jet axis, compared to flat-spectrum radio-quasars. Recent VLBI studies of the morphology and kinematics of individual BL Lac objects (S5 1803+784, PKS 0735+178, etc.) have revealed a new paradigm for the pc-scale jet kinematics of these sources. Unlike the apparent superluminal outward motions usually observed in blazars, most, if not all, jet components in these sources appear to be stationary with respect to the core, while exhibiting strong changes in their position angles. As a result, the jet ridge lines of these sources evolve substantially, at times forming a wide channel-flow. We investigate the Caltech-Jodrell Bank flat-spectrum (CJF) sample of radio-loud active galaxies to study this new kinematic scenario for flat-spectrum AGN. We develop a number of tools that extract information about the apparent linear and angular evolution of the CJF jet ridge lines, as well as their morphology. In this way, we study both radial and non-radial apparent motions in the CJF jets. We find that approximately half of the sample shows appreciable apparent jet widths ($>10 degrees$), with BL Lac jet ridge lines showing significantly larger apparent widths than both quasars and radio galaxies. In addition, BL Lac jet ridge lines are found to change their apparent width more strongly. Finally, BL Lac jet ridge lines show the least apparent linear evolution, which translates to the smallest apparent expansion speeds for their components. We find compelling evidence supporting a substantially different kinematic scenario for flat-spectrum radio-AGN jets and in particular for BL Lac objects. In addition, we find that variability is closely related to the properties of a source's jet ridge line. Using the Urumqi 25m radio telescope, sources from the first three-month Fermi-LAT detected AGN catalog with declination >0 were observed in 2009 at 4.8 GHz. The radio flux density appears to correlate with the gamma-ray intensity. Intra-day variability (IDV) observations were performed in March, April and May in 2009 for selected 42 gamma-ray bright blazars, and 60% of them show evident flux variability at 4.8 GHz during the IDV observations, the IDV detection rate is higher than that in previous flat-spectrum AGN samples. The IDV appears more often in the VLBI-core dominant blazars, and the non-IDV blazars show relatively `steeper' spectral indices than the IDV blazars. The recent release of the First Fermi-LAT Source Catalog solidified the predominant association of extragalactic gamma-ray emitters to active galaxies, in particular blazars. A tight connection between AGN jet kinematics and gamma-ray properties has been argued for, attributing the energetic emission from active galaxies to their highly relativistic outflows. We investigate the Caltech-Jodrell Bank flat-spectrum (CJF) sample to study the connection between AGN jet kinematics and their gamma-ray properties. The high number of sources included in the sample, in addition to the excellent kinematic data available, allows us to investigate the origin of gamma-ray emission in AGN. We identify the CJF sources detected in gamma-rays (by Fermi-LAT and EGRET). We use gamma-ray luminosities and the available VLBI kinematic data to look for correlations between gamma-ray and kinematic properties, as well as for differences between AGN classes (quasars, BL Lacs, radio galaxies). We also check the kinematics of the TeV sources in the CJF. 21.8% of the CJF has been detected in the gamma-rays. We find the detectability of BL Lacs significantly higher compared to quasars. gamma-detected sources show a wider apparent jet velocity distribution compared to the non-detected ones, but the maxima of both distributions are at similar values. No strong link between gamma-ray detectability and fast apparent jet speeds is found. A tentative correlation is found between gamma-ray luminosity and maximum apparent jet speeds, stronger for BL Lac and gamma-variable sources. We find non-radial jet motions to be important to gamma-ray emission. We suggest two-zone, spine-sheath, models as a possible explanation to our results. We present a study of shape, spectra and polarization properties of giant pulses (GPs) from the Crab pulsar at the very high frequencies of 8.5 and 15.1 GHz. Studies at 15.1 GHz were performed for the first time. Observations were conducted with the 100-m radio telescope in Effelsberg in Oct-Nov 2007 at the frequencies of 8.5 and 15.1 GHz as part of an extensive campaign of multi-station multi-frequency observations of the Crab pulsar. A selection of the strongest pulses was recorded with a new data acquisition system, based on a fast digital oscilloscope, providing nanosecond time resolution in two polarizations in a bandwidth of about 500 MHz. We analyzed the pulse shapes, polarisation and dynamic spectra of GPs as well as the cross-correlations between their LHC and RHC signals. No events were detected outside main pulse and interpulse windows. GP properties were found to be very different for GPs emitted at longitudes of the main pulse and the interpulse. Cross-correlations of the LHC and RHC signals show regular patterns in the frequency domain for the main pulse, but these are missing for the interpulse GPs. We consider consequences of application of the rotating vector model to explain the apparent smooth variation in the position angle of linear polarization for main pulse GPs. We also introduce a new scenario of GP generation as a direct consequence of the polar cap discharge. We find further evidence for strong nano-shot discharges in the magnetosphere of the Crab pulsar. The repetitive frequency spectrum seen in GPs at the main pulse phase is interpreted as a diffraction pattern of regular structures in the emission region. The interpulse GPs however have a spectrum that resembles that of amplitude modulated noise. Propagation effects may be the cause of the differences., Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics (accepted)

We investigate the jet morphology and kinematics of a statistically complete radio-loud AGN sample in terms of the gamma-ray properties of the sources. Gamma-ray detected AGN dominate the high end of the jet apparent speed distribution of the total sample. Gamma-variable sources show stronger evolution in their jet morphology. The quasar B0605-085 (OH 010) shows a hint for probable periodical variability in the radio total flux-density light curves. We study the possible periodicity of B0605-085 in the total flux-density, spectra and opacity changes in order to compare it with jet kinematics on parsec scales. We have analyzed archival total flux-density variability at ten frequencies (408 MHz, 4.8 GHz, 6.7 GHz, 8 GHz, 10.7 GHz, 14.5 GHz, 22 GHz, 37 GHz, 90 GHz, and 230 GHz) together with the archival high-resolution very long baseline interferometry data at 15 GHz from the MOJAVE monitoring campaign. Using the Fourier transform and discrete autocorrelation methods we have searched for periods in the total flux-density light curves. In addition, spectral evolution and changes of the opacity have been analyzed. We found a period in multi-frequency total flux-density light curves of 7.9+-0.5 yrs. Moreover, a quasi-stationary jet component C1 follows a prominent helical path on a similar time scale of 8 years. We have also found that the average instantaneous speeds of the jet components show a clear helical pattern along the jet with a characteristic scale of 3 mas. Taking into account average speeds of jet components, this scale corresponds to a time scale of about 7.7 years. Jet precession can explain the helical path of the quasi-stationary jet component C1 and the periodical modulation of the total flux-density light curves. We have fitted a precession model to the trajectory of the jet component C1, with a viewing angle phi=2.6+-2.2 degrees, aperture angle of the precession cone Omega=23.9+-1.9 degrees and fixed precession period (in the observers frame) P = 7.9 yrs., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

In the context of the evolution of large structures in the Universe, it is unclear whether active galaxies are a phase which each galaxy undergoes, and what is the importance of the evolution of black holes in their centers. Binary black hole (BBH) systems could play a key role in our understanding of the above question. We investigate the Caltech-Jodrell Bank flat-spectrum (CJF) sample for evidence in favor of the merger-driven evolution scheme of active galaxies and search tracer-systems of AGN evolution and possible indications of BBH candidates. We discuss the validity and ambiguity of such indications and formulate a set of selection criteria for the detection of such systems. We conduct an extensive literature search for all available multi-wavelength information, concentrating on the optical and infrared regime, in addition to morphological information of the CJF sources. We analyze the statistics of this sample, in terms of these properties. We find 1 ULIRG (Mrk 231) included in the CJF, prototype of a transitory system. In total 28.6% of the CJF sources with z<0.4 are distorted or have a companion. Given the unbiased sample used here, this provides strong evidence for the ubiquity of the merger phenomenon in the context of active galaxies. We find a correlation between the radio and the near-infrared luminosity for the high-luminosity sources, interpreted in the context of the interplay between a star-formation and AGN component. We find a connection between variability and evolutionary transitory systems, as selected through their near-infrared colors. We select 28 sources that trace the different evolution phases of an AGN, as well as a number of the most promising BBH candidates. Context. The nature of X-shaped sources is a matter of considerable debate in the literature: it has even been proposed that they provide evidence for black-hole-mergers/spin-reorientation, and therefore constrain the rate of strong gravitational wave events. Aim. To explore the nature of these X-shaped radio galaxies. Method. We conduct a systematic study of a large sample of known and newly discovered X-shaped sources along with a comparison sample. We used the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope with resolution of $\sim6^{\prime\prime}$ to $\sim15^{\prime\prime}$ at 610 MHz and 240 MHz in the dual-frequency mode. Preliminary Result. Based on our careful analysis and estimation of the possible systematic errors, the known X-shaped sources divide into the following three categories: (i) the wings have flatter spectral indices than the active lobes, (ii) the wings and the active lobes have comparable spectral indices, and (iii) the wings have steeper spectral indices than the active lobes. In addition, based on our preliminary analysis, one sample source from our comparison sample shows a spectral index result belonging to category (i). Future. We study the uniformity of the distribution of compact flat-spectrum AGN on the sky and the evolution of their relativistic jets with cosmic epoch. A complete sample of compact extragalactic radio sources at 15 GHz was recently compiled to conduct the MOJAVE program. The MOJAVE sample comprises 133 radio-loud flat-spectrum AGN with compact relativistic outflows detected at parsec scales. The source counts of compact AGN shows that the MOJAVE sample represents a flux-limited complete sample. Analysis of the population of flat-spectrum quasars of the sample reveals that the pc-scale jets of quasars have intrinsic luminosities in the range between ~10^24 W/Hz and ~10^27 W/Hz and Lorentz factors distributed between 3 and 30. We find that the apparent speed (or Lorentz factor) of jets evolves with redshift, increasing from z~0 to z~1 and then falling at higher redshifts (z~2.5) by a factor of 2.5. The evolution of apparent speeds does not affect significantly the evolution of the beamed luminosity function of quasars, which is most likely to be dependent on the evolution of radio luminosity. Furthermore, the beamed radio luminosity function suggests that the intrinsic luminosity function of quasars has a double power-law form: it is flat at low luminosities and steep at high luminosities. There is a positive evolution of quasars at low redshifts (z<0.5) and strong negative evolution at redshifts >1.7 with space density decline up to z~2.5. This implies that the powerful jets were more populous at redshifts between 0.5 and 1.7. We show that the evolution of compact quasars is luminosity dependent and it depends strongly on the speed of the jet suggesting that there are two distinct populations of quasars with slow and fast jets which evolve differently with redshift., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics
