Nano- and microscale CeO2–ZrO2 (CZ) shape memory ceramics are promising materials for smart micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), sensing, actuation and energy damping applications, but the processing science for scalable production of such small volume ceramics has not yet been established. Herein, we report a modified sol-gel method to synthesize highly monodisperse spherical CZ particles with diameters in the range of ~0.8-3.0 μm. Synchrotron X-ray micro-diffraction (μSXRD) confirmed that most of the particles are single crystal after annealing at 1450°C. Having a monocrystalline structure and a small specimen length scale, the particles exhibit significantly enhanced shape memory and superelasticity properties with up to ~4.7% compression being completely recoverable. Highly reproducible superelasticity through over five hundred strain cycles, with dissipated energy up to ~40 MJ/m3 per cycle, is achieved in the CZ particles containing 16 mol% ceria. This cycling capability is enhanced by ten times compared with our first demonstration using micropillars (only 50 cycles in Lai et al, Science, 2013, 341, 1505). Furthermore, the effects of cycling and testing temperature (in 25°C-400°C) on superelasticity have been investigated.

Recently, the shape memory effect with significant recoverable shape deformation has been discovered in small volume single-crystal zirconia. The application potential for such shape memory ceramics has spurred in-depth exploration of the martensitic transformation crystallography and high temperature shape memory effect. In this work, the martensitic transformation of micron-sized zirconia has been studied in both a pristine as-produced condition and after micromechanical compression, using synchrotron scanning micro X-ray diffraction (μXRD). The pristine zirconia was found to transform into the monoclinic phase via a different crystallographic path than the compressed zirconia, resulting in distinct monoclinic variant preferences. The characteristic martensitic transformation temperatures were also found to be higher after uniaxial compression than in the pristine condition. Such observations provide insight on the differences between stress-induced and thermally-induced martensitic transformation. Moreover, we have observed a full cycle of the shape memory effect with large recoverable strain (7%) in micron-sized zirconia at a temperature of 400 °C. Our findings provide an important guideline to tailor the high-temperature shape memory properties of zirconia for further scientific research and engineering applications.

Small volume zirconia ceramics with few or no grain boundaries have been demonstrated recently to exhibit the shape memory effect. To explore the shape memory properties of yttria doped zirconia (YDZ), it is desirable to develop large, microscale grains, instead of submicron grains that result from typical processing of YDZ. In this work, we have successfully produced single crystal micro-pillars from microscale grains encouraged by the addition of titania during processing. Titania has been doped into YDZ ceramics and its effect on the grain growth, crystallization and microscale elemental distribution of the ceramics have been systematically studied. With 5 mol% titania doping, the grain size can be increased up to ~4 μm, while retaining a large quantity of the desired tetragonal phase of zirconia. Micro-pillars machined from tetragonal grains exhibit the expected shape memory effects where pillars made from titania-free YDZ would not.

Jatropha curcas L. (Euphorbiaceae), is a valuable multi-purpose crop, previously used for disease treatment and environmental restoration, recently is attention to use jatropha oil for produce biodiese. In June 2023, the leaf disease of approximately 60% of J. curcas was observed in Mazhang, Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province (E110°27'26.8'' N22°6'14.7''). Diseased leaves showed typical anthracnose symptoms of chlorotic regions with brownish sunken necrotic lesions (Figure 1). Sections from the junction of disease were surface disinfected in 75% ethanol and 3% hydrogen peroxide solution for 1 minute each. Four small pieces of infected tissue were removed from the lesion and placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated at 25 to 28℃ in the dark. Hyphal tips from the inoculated tissues were subcultured on PDA and two isolates were purified by single spore method. The colonies on PDA were 7.8 cm diam after 10 d at 25 to 28 ℃, covered with dense, cottony, grayish-white aerial mycelium and small dark-based acervuli with orange ooze and dark brown straight setae. Conidia were hyaline, smooth-walled, aseptate, the apex and base rounded, slightly constricted near centre, 12.9 - 13.8 × 3.9 - 4.6 um (av.13.6 × 4.3 μm, n = 50). Appressoria were variable in shape, mostly simple, subglobose or irregular lobes, 5.8-9.6 × 5.7-11.2 um (Figure 2). Perithecia were not observed. These characteristics were consistent with Colletotrichum sp. (Weir, B. S., et al. 2012). Sequences of isolates ACCC 35630 and ACCC 35631 stored in Agricultural Culture Collection of China including internal transcribed spacer (ITS), actin (ACT), beta-tubulin (tub2), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and chitin synthase (chs). were amplified (Weir et al, 2012), sequenced and submitted to GenBank (ITS: PP474979 and PP474984; ACT: PP505487 and PP505488; TUB: PP505493 and PP505494; GAPDH: PP505491 and PP505492; CHS: PP505489 and PP505490). The amplicon sizes of ITS, ACT, TUB, GAPDH, and CHS were 550, 652, 500, 264, and 301 bp, respectively. Phylogenetic analyses showed that Isolates 35630 & 35631 were clustered closely association with RHCOL1 and RHCOL3. Phylogenetic analysis with MEGA 7 using the combined ITS-ACT-CHS-GAPDH-TUB2 sequences showed that the two isolates clustered with C. queenslandicum (Figure 3). To test the pathogenicity, ten healthy leaves on plants in the field were wiped with 75% alcohol and sterile water, punctured with a sterile needle and inoculated by adding 10 uL of spore suspension (1 × 105 conidia/ml) to the wounded sites. And two other leaves were added sterile water as controls. Symptoms of anthracnose were observed on leaves similar to the disease described above after 7 days of inoculation, whereas the leaves from the controls remained asymptomatic. C. queenslandicum was reisolated from the inoculated leaves. C. queenslandicum has been reported as a pathogen causing leaf and fruit anthracnose on papaya, coffee, rambutan, avocado and Persian lime etc. in tropical and temperate regions (Kunta, M., et al. 2018), and this is the first report on J. curcas in China as well as worldwide. This disease may have a significant negative impact on J. curcas cultivation.

Li-rich layered oxides are promising candidates for high-capacity Li-ion battery cathode materials. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations to investigate the effect of F doping on Li-rich Li 2 MnO 3 layered cathode materials. Our findings reveal that both Li 2 MnO 3 and Li 2 MnO 2.75 F 0.25 exhibit significant volume changes (greater than 10%) during deep delithiation, which could hinder the cycling of more Li ions from these two materials. For Li 2 MnO 3 , it is observed that oxygen ions lose electrons to compensate for charge during the delithiation process, leading to a relatively high voltage plateau. After F doping, oxidation occurs in both the cationic (Mn) and anionic (O) components, resulting in a lower voltage plateau at the beginning of the charge, which can be attributed to the oxidation of Mn 3+ to Mn 4+ . Additionally, F doping can somewhat suppress the release of oxygen in Li 2 MnO 3 , improving the stability of anionic oxidation. However, the increase of the activation barriers for Li diffusion can be observed after F doping, due to stronger electrostatic interactions between F - and Li + , which adversely affects the cycling kinetics of Li 2 MnO 2.75 F 0.25 . Purpose: This research evaluates the effect of balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) on cardiac electrophysiological changes in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH)., Methods: Involving a retrospective analysis of 39 CTEPH patients (average age 61 ± 11), who had at least two BPAs and paired ECGs pre- and post-surgery, we examined changes in ECG indicators of right ventricular hypertrophy and their correlation with hemodynamic results., Results: BPA yielded marked improvements in cardiac function and hemodynamics. ECG parameters, specifically the Lewis criteria and Butler-Leggett score, correlated strongly with hemodynamics and were predictive of a mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) ≥ 35mmHg. Notably, QRS complex axis normalization was observed in 25 patients, with 14 fully normalizing (range - 30° to + 90°). The qR pattern in V1 vanished in 9 cases, and 75% of the patients in qR pattern in V 1 group had QRS complex electrical axis completely returned to normal range. The qR V1 group had higher mPAP and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR), and lower cardiac output and index compared to the non-qR V1 group, alongside a higher Butler-Leggett score., Conclusions: BPA enhances cardiac function and hemodynamics in CTEPH patients, with certain ECG measures such as Lewis criteria and Butler-Leggett score reflecting the severity of hemodynamic impairment. The reversal of QRS axis deviation and the disappearance of the qR pattern in lead V 1 may serve as valuable indicators for assessing post-BPA satisfaction in CTEPH patients., (© 2024. The mechanism by which aging induces aortic aneurysm and dissection (AAD) remains unclear. A total of 430 participants were recruited for the screening of differentially expressed plasma microRNAs (miRNAs). We found that miR-1204 is significantly increased in both the plasma and aorta of elder patients with AAD and is positively correlated with age. Cell senescence induces the expression of miR-1204 through p53 interaction with plasmacytoma variant translocation 1, and miR-1204 induces vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) senescence to form a positive feedback loop. Furthermore, miR-1204 aggravates angiotensin II-induced AAD formation, and inhibition of miR-1204 attenuates β-aminopropionitrile monofumarate-induced AAD development in mice. Mechanistically, miR-1204 directly targets myosin light chain kinase (MYLK), leading to the acquisition of a senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) by VSMCs and loss of their contractile phenotype. MYLK overexpression reverses miR-1204-induced VSMC senescence, SASP and contractile phenotypic changes, and the decrease of transforming growth factor-β signaling pathway. Hylocereus megalanthus (syn. Selenecereus megalanthus), commonly known as Yanwo fruit (bird's nest fruit), is an important tropical fruit, which is popular and widely planted due to its high nutritional and economic value in southern China. In September 2022, a serious stem and fruit canker was observed on Ecuadorian variety of Yanwo fruit plant in a 0.2 ha orchard in Guangdong (N21°19'1.24" E110°7'28.49"). Almost all plants were infected and disease incidence of fruits and stems was about 80% and 90% respectively. Symptoms on the stem and fruits were small, circular or irregular, sunken, orangish brown spots that developed into cankers (Fig 1 A, B and C). Black pycnidia were embedded under the surface of the cankers at the initial stage, subsequently they became erumpent from the surface, and the infected parts rotted. Five symptomatic stems from five plants were collected, 0.2 cm2 tissues adjacent to cankers were surface sterilized and placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) to incubate at 25 to 28 ℃. Fungal isolates each with similar morphology grew from 100% of the tissues. Colonies covered with aerial mycelium were grayish white, and then gradually turned to grayish black. Septate hyphae were hyaline to brown and constricted into arthroconidial chains. The arthroconidia were variously shaped and colored, orbicular to rectangular, hyaline to dark brown, thick-walled, and zero- to one- septate, averaging 7.7 × 3.6 μm (n>50) (Fig 1 D, E, F and G). To identify the fungus, the internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef1), beta-tubulin (tub2), histone H3 (his3) and chitin synthase (chs) gene of isolate ACCC 35488 and ACCC 35489 (Agricultural Culture Collection of China) were amplified and sequenced with primer pairs: ITS1/ITS4 (White et al. 1990), EF1-728F/EF2-rd (Carbone & Kohn 1999; O'Donnell et al.1998), TUB2Fd/ TUB4Rd（Aveskamp et al 2009）, CYLH3F/H3-1b (Crous et al. 2004) and CHS-79F/CHS-345R (Carbone & Kohn 1999) (ITS: OQ381102 and PP488350; tef1: OQ408545 and PP510454; tub2: OQ408546 and PP510455; his3: OQ408544 and PP510453; chs: OQ408543 and PP510452). Sequence Blastn results showed above 99% identical with those of Neoscytalidium dimidiatum ex-type strain CPC38666. Phylogenetic tree inferred from Maximum Likelihood analysis of the combined ITS, tub2 and tef1 sequences revealed two isolates clustered with N. dimidiatum (Fig 2). Pathogenicity was tested on healthy one-year-old cuttings and fruits of Ecuadorian variety at room temperature. Six sites were pin-pricked on each stem and fruit. Both wounded stems and fruits were inoculated with spore suspensions (106 spore/ml) and 6-mm fungal plugs respectively. Sterile water and agar were used as control. The test was repeated twice. Stems and fruits were enclosed in plastic boxes with 80% relative humidity. Symptoms described above were observed on inoculated stems and fruits at five days post inoculation (Fig 1 H and I). No symptoms developed on the controls. Neoscytaliudium dimidiatum was reisolated from the cankers with a frequency of 100% via morphological and molecular analysis. This is first report of stem and fruit canker caused by N. dimidiatum on H. megalanthus in China and this disease represents a serious risk of Yanwo fruit yield losses. This fungus is widespread occurring throughout the world causing diseases on a wide variety of plants. The finding will be helpful for its prevention and control.

Identifying and protecting hotspots of endemism and species richness is crucial for mitigating the global biodiversity crisis. However, our understanding of spatial diversity patterns is far from complete, which severely limits our ability to conserve biodiversity hotspots. Here, we report a comprehensive analysis of amphibian species diversity in China, one of the most species-rich countries on Earth. Our study combines 20 y of field surveys with new molecular analyses of 521 described species and also identifies 100 potential cryptic species. We identify 10 hotspots of amphibian diversity in China, each with exceptional species richness and endemism and with exceptional phylogenetic diversity and phylogenetic endemism (based on a new time-calibrated, species-level phylogeny for Chinese amphibians). These 10 hotspots encompass 59.6% of China's described amphibian species, 49.0% of cryptic species, and 55.6% of species endemic to China. Only four of these 10 hotspots correspond to previously recognized biodiversity hotspots. The six new hotspots include the Nanling Mountains and other mountain ranges in South China. Among the 186 species in the six new hotspots, only 9.7% are well covered by protected areas and most (88.2%) are exposed to high human impacts. Five of the six new hotspots are under very high human pressure and are in urgent need of protection. Innovative surface-protecting ligands are in constant demand due to their crucial role in shaping the configuration, property, and application of gold nanoclusters. Here, the unprecedented O -ethyl dithiocarbonate (DTX)-stabilized atomically precise gold nanoclusters, [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (DTX) 5 Cl 2 ] 2+ ( Au 25 DTX -Cl ) and [Au 25 (PPh 3 ) 10 (DTX) 5 Br 2 ] 2+ ( Au 25 DTX -Br ), were synthesized and structurally characterized. The introduction of bidentate DTX ligands not only endowed the gold nanocluster with unique staggered Au 25 nanorod configurations but also generated the symmetry breaking from the D 5d geometry of the Au 25 kernels to the chiral D 5 configuration of the Au 25 molecules. The chirality of Au 25 nanorods was notably revealed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and chiral separation was induced by employing chiral DTX ligands. The staggered configurations of Au 25 nanorods, as opposed to eclipsed ones, were responsible for the large red shift in the emission wavelengths, giving rise to a promising near-infrared II (NIR-II, >1000 nm) phosphorescence. Furthermore, their performances in photocatalytic sulfide oxidation and electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions have been examined, and it has been demonstrated that the outstanding catalytic activity of gold nanoclusters is highly related to their stability.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta) is a perennial crop of the family Euphorbiaceae, widely cultivated due to its phytopharmacological and economic values in China. In November 2022, a leaf spot disease on cassava was observed in Zhanjiang, Guangdong, China (21.17° N, 110.18° E), with 100% disease incidence. About 80 % of leaves were covered with spots on the infected plants. Typical symptoms initially appeared as irregular water-soaked lesions that became brown and whitish with the progress of the disease, lesions gradually expanded and coalesced, causing leaf withering, drying and final fall. Tissues (4 to 5 mm) were excised from the margin of lesions, sterilized in 3% H2O2 solution for 3 min, rinsed three times with sterile water, placed on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium (containing 50mg/L penicillin), and incubated at 25-28 °C. Ten single hypha isolates with similar morphology were obtained and further purified as single conidium subcultures. The colony was grey whitish with sparse aerial mycelium and colony diameter reached 70.4 mm after four days incubation at 25-28℃ in the dark. Black pycnidia occurring as clusters were spherical or irregular, erumpent at maturity, often with a creamy whitish, conidial cirrus extruding from ostiole after 30-days incubation. Conidiophores were hyaline, smooth, unbranched. Alpha conidia were bi-guttulate, hyaline, ellipsoidal, aseptate, with dimensions of 5.1~7.5×1.9~3.4µm (mean 6.2×2.8 µm, n>50). Beta conidia were abundant, filiform, hyaline, smooth, curved in a hooked shape, with a truncate base and dimensions of 18.5-26.4 × 0.6-1.2μm (mean 23.4 × 1.0 μm, n= 40) . Gamma conidia were not observed. The morphological characteristics were similar to those of Diaporthe ueckeri (Udayanga et al. 2015). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, large subunit (LSU) rRNA sequence, actin (ACT), calmodulin (CAL), histone H3 (HIS), translation elongation factor 1-alpha (TEF1-α), and β-tubulin (TUB) genes of a representative isolate CCAS-MS-6 (ACCC 35497) were amplified and sequenced using primer pairs: ITS5/ITS4, LR0R/LR5, ACT-512F/ACT-783R, CAL228F/CAL737R, CYLH3F/ H3-1b, EF1-728F/ EF1-986R and Bt2a/Bt2b (Gao et al 2017；Udayanga et al 2014). All sequences were deposited in GenBank (OR361671, OR361672, and OR365605-9). BLAST search showed high similarities with sequences of Diaporthe ueckeri (Tab 1). Maximum likelihood analyses of the concatenated data of CAL, HIS, ITS, TEF and TUB using Mega 11 placed CCAS-MS-6 in the D. ueckeri clade. Thus, the fungus was identified as D. ueckeri. Three one-year old healthy plants were used for pathogenicity tests in pots. Two 15-day old leaves of each plant were cleaned with 75% alcohol, three sites on each leaf were wounded, and sites on one of the leaf were covered with fungal plugs from 15-day-old cultures on PDA, and sites on the other leaf with PDA plugs as a control. All plants were kept at ambient temperature (about 28℃) and covered with plastic bags containing sterile wet cotton to maintain the humidity. Seven days after inoculation, all inoculated sites showed symptoms of necrosis, while control sites showed no symptoms. The same fungus identified on the basis of morphological and molecular criteria was reisolated from symptomatic inoculated leaves. In China, D. ueckeri had been reported to cause diseases on Eucalyptus citriodora, Camellia sinensis, and Michelia shiluensis (Gao et al 2016; Liao et al 2023; Yi et al 2018), this is the first report on M. esculenta. The definition of the disease etiology is a prerequisite to develop effective management strategies.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of ticagrelor on myocardial microcirculation, cardiac function, and adverse cardiovascular events in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)., Patients and Methods: A total of 80 STEMI patients admitted to our hospital from February 2020 to March 2023 were selected and included in the retrospective study, all receiving PCI treatment. They were randomly and retrospectively divided into a control group (40 cases) and an observation group (40 cases), and treated with clopidogrel and ticagrelor, respectively. The clinical effects were compared., Results: The starting perfusion time of the contrast agent in the myocardial infarction area in the observation group was 2.22±0.27 s, and the peak perfusion time was 2.62±0.27 s, which was lower than those in the control group (2.51±0.29 s and 3.21±0.39 s, t=4.629, 7.867, p=0.000). The ratio of peak perfusion intensity between the two groups was significantly different (t=2.363, p=0.021). Left ventricular ejection fraction, stroke volume index, and cardiac index in the observation group were higher than those in the control group (55.03±6.03 vs. 52.33±5.13; 57.39±6.81 vs. 51.11±6.31 L/min·m-2; 3.49±0.45 vs. 3.12±0.38 mL/m2, t=2.157, 4.278, 3.973, p<0.05). The observation group had lower levels of brain natriuretic peptide and C-reactive protein compared to the control group (425.35±55.71 vs. 589.36±70.24 pg/mL; 15.13±1.03 vs. 21.64±2.74 mg/L; t=11.570, 14.066, p=0.000). There was no statistical significance in the incidence of adverse cardiovascular events between the two groups (2.50% vs. 7.50%, χ2=1.920, p=0.166)., Conclusions: The use of ticagrelor can regulate myocardial microcirculation and improve cardiac function in STEMI patients undergoing PCI.

The application of potassium (K) in conjunction with nitrogen (N) has been shown to enhance N use efficiency. However, there is still a need for further understanding of the optimal ratios and molecular regulatory mechanisms, particularly in soil-cotton systems. Here, a field trial was conducted, involving varying rates of N and K, alongside pot and hydroponic experiments. The objective was to assess the impact of N-K interaction on the absorption, transport and distribution of N in cotton. The results showed that K supply at 90 and 240 kg ha -1 had a beneficial impact on N uptake and distribution to both seed and lint, resulting in the highest N use efficiency ranging from 22% to 62% and yield improvements from 20% to 123%. The increase in stem and root diameters, rather than the quantify of xylem vessels and phloem sieve tubes, facilitated the uptake and transport of N due to the provision of K. At the molecular level, K supply upregulated the expression levels of genes encoding GhNRT2.1 transporter and GhSLAH3 channel in cotton roots to promote N uptake and GhNRT1.5/NPF7.3 genes to transport N to shoot under low-N conditions. However, under high-N conditions, K supply induced anion channel genes (GhSLAH4) of roots to promote N uptake and genes encoding GhNRT1.5/NPF7.3 and GhNRT1.8/NPF7.2 transporters to facilitate NO 3 - unloading from xylem to mesophyll cell in high-N plants. Furthermore, K supply resulted in the upregulation of gene expression for GhGS2 in leaves, while simultaneously downregulating the expression of GhNADH-GOGAT, GhGDH1 and GhGDH3 genes in high-N roots. Microbial residues contribute to the long-term stabilization of carbon in the entire soil profile, helping to regulate the climate of the planet; however, how sensitive these residues are to climatic seasonality remains virtually unknown, especially for deep soils across environmental gradients. Here, we investigated the changes of microbial residues along soil profiles (0-100 cm) from 44 typical ecosystems with a wide range of climates (~3100 km transects across China). Our results showed that microbial residues account for a larger portion of soil carbon in deeper (60-100 cm) vs. shallower (0-30 and 30-60 cm) soils. Moreover, we find that climate especially challenges the accumulation of microbial residues in deep soils, while soil properties and climate share their roles in controlling the residue accumulation in surface soils. Climatic seasonality, including positive correlations with summer precipitation and maximum monthly precipitation, as well as negative correlations with temperature annual range, are important factors explaining microbial residue accumulation in deep soils across China. In particular, summer precipitation is the key regulator of microbial-driven carbon stability in deep soils, which has 37.2% of relative independent effects on deep-soil microbial residue accumulation. Our work provides novel insights into the importance of climatic seasonality in driving the stabilization of microbial residues in deep soils, challenging the idea that deep soils as long-term carbon reservoirs can buffer climate change., (© 2023 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Background: Vacuum sealing drainage (VSD) is widely applied in complex wound repair. We aimed to compare traditional debridement and drainage and VSD in treating Fournier's gangrene (FG)., Methods: Data of patients surgically treated for FG were retrospectively analyzed., Results: Of the 36 patients (men: 31, women: 5; mean age: 53.5 ± 11.3 [range: 28-74] years) included in the study, no patients died. Between-group differences regarding sex, age, BMI, time from first debridement to wound healing, number of debridements, FGSI, and shock were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). However, lesion diameter, colostomy, VAS score, dressing changes, analgesic use, length of hospital stay, and wound reconstruction method (χ 2  = 5.43, P = 0.04) exhibited statistically significant differences. Objective: The optimal time to start renal replacement therapy (RRT) for acute kidney injury (AKI) remains controversial. We aim to compare the effects of early vs. delayed RRT initiation on clinical outcomes in adult patients with AKI., Materials and Methods: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, ClinicalTrials.gov, and the International Clinical Trial registry platform were systematically searched from inception to 7 August 2022. The review included randomized clinical trials (RCTs) comparing early and delayed initiation of RRT in AKI patients. The selected primary outcomes were short-term and long-term mortality. Secondary outcomes included RRT dependency, intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, hospital length of stay, mechanical ventilator-free days, vasoactive agents-free days, RRT-free days, and adverse events., Results: Overall, 15 RCTs, including 5,625 patients, were analyzed. Early RRT showed no survival benefit when compared to the delayed therapy (28-or 30-day mortality: RR, 1.01, 95% CI: 0.94-1.08, p = 0.87; 60-day mortality: RR, 0.87, 95% CI: 0.71-1.06, p = 0.16; 90-day mortality: RR, 1.00, 95% CI: 0.88-1.13, p = 0.97; in-hospital mortality: RR, 1.05, 95% CI: 0.88-1.24, p = 0.58; ICU mortality: RR, 1.00, 95% CI: 0.91-1.10, p = 0.98). The delayed RRT did not lead to a higher risk of RRT dependency, ICU, or hospital length of stay than the early RRT. Similarly, early initiation of RRT did not lead to longer ventilator-free, vasoactive agent-free, and RRT-free days. However, early RRT initiation was associated with more adverse events., Conclusions: Our study suggested that early RRT initiation was not associated with survival benefits or better clinical outcomes and increased the risk of RRT-associated adverse events. Current evidence does not support the use of early RRT for AKI patients without urgent indications.

Soil contamination is one of the main threats to ecosystem health and sustainability. Yet little is known about the extent to which soil contaminants differ between urban greenspaces and natural ecosystems. Here we show that urban greenspaces and adjacent natural areas (i.e., natural/semi-natural ecosystems) shared similar levels of multiple soil contaminants (metal(loid)s, pesticides, microplastics, and antibiotic resistance genes) across the globe. We reveal that human influence explained many forms of soil contamination worldwide. Socio-economic factors were integral to explaining the occurrence of soil contaminants worldwide. We further show that increased levels of multiple soil contaminants were linked with changes in microbial traits including genes associated with environmental stress resistance, nutrient cycling, and pathogenesis. Taken together, our work demonstrates that human-driven soil contamination in nearby natural areas mirrors that in urban greenspaces globally, and highlights that soil contaminants have the potential to cause dire consequences for ecosystem sustainability and human wellbeing., (© 2023. Warming is known to reduce soil carbon (C) stocks by promoting microbial respiration, which is associated with the decomposition of microbial residue carbon (MRC). However, the relative contribution of MRC to soil organic carbon (SOC) across temperature gradients is poorly understood. Here, we investigated the contribution of MRC to SOC along two independent elevation gradients of our model system (i.e., the Tibetan Plateau and Shennongjia Mountain in China). Our results showed that local temperature increases were negatively correlated with MRC and SOC. Further analyses revealed that rising temperature reduced SOC via decreasing MRC, which helps to explain future reductions in SOC under climate warming. Our findings demonstrate that climate warming has the potential to reduce C sequestration by increasing the decomposition of MRC, exacerbating the positive feedback between rising temperature and CO 2 efflux. Our study also considered the influence of multiple environmental factors such as soil pH and moisture, which were more important in controlling SOC than microbial traits such as microbial life-style strategies and metabolic efficiency. Objective: To investigate the reduction effect of hoding cricoarytenoid joint reduction with visual laryngoscope under intravenous anesthesia. Methods: The therapeutic effects of 40 patients with arytenoid dislocation(AD)treated by closed reduction in the single center from January 2020 to September 2021 were retrospectively analyzed, including 21 males and 19 females, median age 48 years. The etiology, symptoms, preoperative evaluation methods, reduction mode, reduction times, and the recovery of arytenoid cartilage movement and sound after reduction were evaluated and analyzed. Results: All patients had obvious hoarseness and breath sound before treatment. Under stroboscopic laryngoscope or electronic nasopharyngoscope, different degrees of vocal cord movement disorder and poor glottic closure can be seen. There were 28 cases of left dislocation, 9 cases of right dislocation and 3 cases of bilateral dislocation. The etiology of dislocation of cricoarytenoid joint: 25 cases (62.5%) of tracheal intubation under general anesthesia were the most common causes, was as follows by laryngeal trauma, gastroscopy, cough, vomiting and so on. Among them, 28 cases of reduction were initially diagnosed in our department, and 12 cases were diagnosed later after failure of reduction treatment. Of the 40 patients, 6 underwent reduction 24 hours after dislocation; 18 cases from 3 days to 1 month; 7 cases from 1 to 3 months; 6 cases were reset in 3~6 months; Over 6 months in 3 cases. After one reduction, 10 cases (10/40, 25%) recovered normal pronunciation, 14 cases (14/40, 35%) recovered normal pronunciation after two reduction, 10 cases (10/40, 25%) recovered normal pronunciation after three times, 2 cases (2/40, 5%) recovered normal pronunciation after four times, and 1 case (2.5%) recovered normal pronunciation after five times. Thin slice CT scan of larynx and cricoarytenoid joint reconstruction showed the types of AD: subluxation in 37 cases (92.5%) and total dislocation in 3 cases; 28 cases of left dislocation, 9 cases of right dislocation and 3 cases of bilateral dislocation; 29 cases (72.5%) had posterior dislocation and 11 cases (27.5%) had anterior dislocation. All patients were treated by intravenous anesthesia with arytenoid cartilage clamped by cricoarytenoid joint reduction forceps under visual laryngoscope. The curative effect was evaluated by stroboscopic laryngoscope and/or voice analysis at 1-2 weeks after operation. The vocal cord movement returned to normal and the pronunciation was good in 37 cases (92.5%). Conclusions: Hoding cricoarytenoid joint reduction with the vision laryngoscope under intravenous anesthesia is easy to operate and the reduction effect is more stable. It is a effective method for AD.

Identifying the drivers of the response of soil microbial respiration to warming is integral to accurately forecasting the carbon-climate feedbacks in terrestrial ecosystems. Microorganisms are the fundamental drivers of soil microbial respiration and its response to warming; however, the specific microbial communities and properties involved in the process remain largely undetermined. Here, we identified the associations between microbial community and temperature sensitivity (Q 10 ) of soil microbial respiration in alpine forests along an altitudinal gradient (from 2974 to 3558 m) from the climate-sensitive Tibetan Plateau. Our results showed that changes in microbial community composition accounted for more variations of Q 10 values than a wide range of other factors, including soil pH, moisture, substrate quantity and quality, microbial biomass, diversity and enzyme activities. Specifically, co-occurring microbial assemblies (i.e., ecological clusters or modules) targeting labile carbon consumption were negatively correlated with Q 10 of soil microbial respiration, whereas microbial assemblies associated with recalcitrant carbon decomposition were positively correlated with Q 10 of soil microbial respiration. Furthermore, there were progressive shifts of microbial assemblies from labile to recalcitrant carbon consumption along the altitudinal gradient, supporting relatively high Q 10 values in high-altitude regions. The Yangtze River Economic Belt is one of the areas with rapid economic development in China, although the intensive industrial activities have aggravated the emissions of soil pollutants in this area. Industrial activities are important sources of soil heavy metal contamination; however, the spatial distribution and main emission sources of soil heavy metal contamination in industrial regions of the economic belt remain unclear. Here, we collected data on the concentrations of eight heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, Hg, As, and Zn) in the surface soils of 193 industrial regions covering 11 provinces and cities of the Yangtze River Economic Belt from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Web of Science, and other public databases. On this basis, we analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metals and the contamination characteristics of typical industries. The results showed that the heavy metal contamination in agricultural land was more serious than that in industrial land. A total of 58.49%, 39.53%, and 22.64% of the agricultural land, respectively, contained levels of Cd, Zn, and Pb that exceeded the screening values of the Soil Environmental Quality Control Standard for Soil Pollution Risk of Agricultural Land (GB 15618-2018). The results of geo-accumulation index analysis showed that the contamination degree of the eight heavy metals was in the order of Cd (2.52)>Hg (1.17)>Pb (1.00)>Zn (0.90)>Cu (0.72)>As (0.02)>Cr (-0.40)>Ni(-0.48). As for the spatial distribution, Hg, Cd, As, Cu, Pb, and Zn were the main pollutants in the upstream and middle reaches of the industrial regions, whereas As, Cd, and Hg were the main pollutants in the downstream industrial regions. Different types of industry caused different types of contamination. Mining industries caused the most serious soil contamination, the main pollutants of which were Hg and Cd, followed by Cu, Pb, and Zn. Furthermore, metal processing industries mainly caused Cd and Pb contamination. The surrounding soils of chemical industries were contamination-free or only slightly polluted by the eight heavy metals, whereas petroleum processing industries mainly caused Cd contamination. Our study provides important theoretical basis for the future prevention and control of soil heavy metal contamination in industrial regions of the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

Three new phomalone derivatives, phomalichenones E-G ( 1 - 3 ), and seven known analogues ( 4 - 10 ) were isolated from the cultures of a deep-sea-derived fungus Alternaria sp. MCCC 3A00467. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including the 1D and 2D NMR, and ECD spectrum. Among the compounds isolated, phomalichenone F ( 2 ) presented cytotoxic activity against human myeloma cancer U266 cells with IC 50 value of 24.99  μ g/mL. The most active compound, 10 , showed cytotoxicity against U266, HepG2 and A549 cells with IC 50 values of 13.26, 14.69 and 24.39  μ g/mL, respectively.

Trait-based approaches provide a candidate framework for linking soil microbial community to ecosystem processes, yet how the trade-offs in different microbial traits regulate the community-level metabolic efficiency remains unknown. Herein we assessed the roles of the microbial taxa with particular trait strategies in mediating soil microbial metabolic efficiency along an altitude gradient on the Tibetan Plateau. Results showed that soil microbial metabolic efficiency declined with increasing altitude, as indicated by the increasing metabolic quotient (microbial respiration per unit biomass, qCO 2 ) and decreasing carbon use efficiency (CUE). Both qCO 2 and CUE were predominantly predicted by microbial physiological and taxonomic attributes after considering key environmental factors including soil pH, substrate quantity and quality. Specifically, the reduced metabolic efficiency was associated with higher investment into nutrient (particularly for phosphorus) acquisitions via enzymes. Furthermore, we identified key microbial assemblies selected by harsh environments (low substrate quality and temperature) as important predictors of metabolic efficiency. These results suggest that particular microbial assemblies adapted to nutrient limited and cold habitats, but at the expense of lower metabolic efficient at higher altitude. The primary hydrogen (H) source for all organic compounds in the biosphere is from water, and then participates in biogeochemical cycles through photosynthesis and plant physiological metabolism. As a new proxy of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment, stable hydrogen isotope ratios in wood lignin methoxyl groups (δ 2 H LM ) show great advantages in the studies of paleoclimatic change and have been used to reconstruct precipitation stable hydrogen isotope ratios and paleoclimate signals in many regions. Based on the lignin application mechanism and analysis method of δ 2 H LM , we evaluated the stability and effectiveness of δ 2 H LM -measurement method from lignin content and lignin monomer composition, and expounded the tree lignin methoxyl groups' stable isotope proxies of current research outcomes. In the middle latitudes, the tree-ring δ 2 H LM had great potential in recording temperature signals and precipitation stable hydrogen isotope ratios. However, the study of tree-ring δ 2 H LM was still in its infancy as evidenced by following reasons: 1) The study area was limited to the middle latitude of the northern hemisphere, and the study subjects were limited to conifer species; 2) To compensate for the limitation of hydrogen isotopic records of nitrocellulose, high resolution tree-ring δ 2 H LM would be studied; 3) The potential of tree-ring δ 2 H LM utilization in plant physiology and forest ecology remained to be exploited.

Cardiac dysfunction in severe sepsis is associated with increased mortality. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying septic heart dysfunction remain unclear. Expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator 1α (Pgc-1α), concentrations of inflammatory factors, and activation of the nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) signaling pathway were examined in H9c2 cells after a 24-h lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation period using qPCR, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), and western blots (WBs), respectively. Pgc-1α was overexpressed and suppressed in cells using a lentivirus vector and siRNA, respectively. The effects of Pgc-1α dysfunction on the release of inflammatory factors and apoptosis were analyzed. Pgc-1α expression was increased after LPS induction for 0.5 h and returned to the pre-induction level at 2 h. Levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α increase after LPS induction for 0.5 h and accumulated in the culture supernatants over time. The WBs revealed the highest Pgc-1α and phospho (p)-p65 protein levels after LPS induction for 0.5 h, followed by a decrease; moreover, the cleaved-caspase-3 level increased after LPS induction for 0.5 h and increased gradually thereafter. A functional analysis of Pgc-1α revealed that overexpression of this protein enhanced LPS-induced inflammatory factors and p-p65 levels and inhibited apoptosis during the early stage after LPS induction (0.5 and 4 h). In contrast, the inhibition of Pgc-1α expression inhibited the LPS expression-associated increases in inflammatory factors and p-p65 and promoted apoptosis. Stable isotope ratios of tree ring can effectively record climate and environmental changes during tree growth and the physiological responses of trees to such changes. Intra-annual high resolution stable isotope ratios of tree ring can provide more detailed climatic and environmental information, reveal the physiological and ecological response mechanism of trees to seasonal climatic variation, and thus with great potential in the study of paleoclimate and global change ecology. Based on the intra-annual high resolution stable isotope ratios related literature since 1990, we reviewed the research progress of intra-annual high resolution tree ring stable isotope records in the aspects of sample stripping method, chemical extraction method of α-cellulose and application, and further proposed the potential and future development direction of intra-annual high resolution tree ring stable isotope records.

By exposing floating gates of EEPROM memory cells with frontside sample preparation, scanning nonlinear dielectric microscopy (SNDM) succeeded in reading back the data stored in the memory cells with a 250 nm node size. At an optimized voltage bias of AC = 3 V and DC = 1 V, a clear signal contrast between programmed and erased cells is obtained. The high resolution SNDM signal reveals the details of bowling-pin shape structure of memory cells, providing high confidence in data assignment during forensic applications. Lichens play crucial roles in sustaining the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems; however, the diversity and ecological factors associated with lichenised soil fungi remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we used a global field survey including information on fungal sequences of topsoils from 235 terrestrial ecosystems. We identified 880 lichenised fungal phylotypes across nine biomes ranging from deserts to tropical forests. The diversity and proportion of lichenised soil fungi peaked in shrublands and dry grasslands. Aridity index, plant cover and soil pH were the most important factors associated with the distribution of lichenised soil fungi. Furthermore, we identified Endocarpon, Verrucaria and Rinodina as some of the most dominant lichenised genera across the globe, and they had similar environmental preferences to the lichenised fungal community. In addition, precipitation seasonality and mean diurnal temperature range were also important in predicting the proportion of these dominant genera. Using this information, we were able to create the first global maps of the richness and the proportion of dominant genera of lichenised fungi. Purpose: To compare the relative clinical efficacy of preoperative computed tomography (CT)-guided methylene-blue (MB) and coil localization for lung nodules (LNs)., Material and Methods: Between January 2013 and December 2018, a total of 89 patients with LNs underwent CT-guided MB or coil localization and subsequent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)-guided wedge resection in our hospital. We compared the technical success of localization and wedge resection between two groups., Results: In MB group, 47 LNs in 39 patients were localized, with successful localization and wedge resection rates of 97.9% and 97.9%, respectively. In the coil group, 64 LNs in 50 patients were localized, with successful localization and wedge resection rates of 96.9% and 96.9%, respectively. There were no significant differences in technical success rates of localization and wedge resection between the two groups ( p  = 1.000 and 1.000). The coil group sustained a longer duration between localization and VATS relative to the MB group (14.4 h vs. 1.6 h, p  = .001)., Conclusion: Both MB and coil localization were safe and effective techniques to establish a high success rate of VATS-guided wedge resection for LNs. Relative to MB localization, coil localization might be compatible with a longer delay between localization and VATS.

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of microRNA (miR)-155-5p on the expression of testican-1 (SPOCK1) and the invasion and migration of prostate cancer cells in vitro . Bioinformatics analysis and molecular biology assays revealed that SPOCK1 may be a direct target gene of miR-155-5p. In addition, a negative correlation was identified between SPCOK1 and miR-155-5p expression in prostate tumor tissues and cell lines. miR-155-5p mimic transfection inhibited SPOCK1 expression in PC3 cells and decreased cell migration and invasion abilities, while the expression of vimentin, N-cadherin, E-cadherin, β-catenin, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)3 and MMP9 was upregulated. In summary, SPOCK1 was found to be a target gene of miR155-5p in prostate cancer, and miR-155-5p acts as a tumor-suppressor gene and may inhibit SPOCK1-mediated prostate cancer progression., (Copyright: © Yao et al.)

The present study aimed to investigate the expression of inflammatory markers and mitochondrial function-related genes, as well as their temporal relationship with cardiac myocyte injury in a rat model of sepsis. The sepsis model was constructed using cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Two hours after CLP, the levels of inflammatory cytokines (interleukin [IL]-1β, IL-6, and TNFα) and myocardial function markers (serum brain natriuretic peptide [BNP], cardiac troponin-I [cTNI], and procalcitonin [PCT]) were increased significantly, falling from around 9 hours postoperatively. The concentration of nitric oxide (NO) in the heart tissue was increased 6 hours after CLP. The heart rate (HR) of rats that underwent CLP decreased 2 hours after surgery and then increased to above-normal values. The left ventricular short axis shortening (FS) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were decreased at 2 hours postoperatively and reached a minima at 6 hours. Stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), and changes and heart index (CI) results indicated myocardial dysfunction. Western blot analysis demonstrated the increased expression of mitochondrial function-related proteins and activation of mitochondrial apoptotic pathways. Hematoxylin and eosin staining and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assays revealed that the proportion of proapoptotic cells was significantly higher in rats that underwent CLP than sham surgery at 2 to 24 hours postoperatively. Taken together, our results indicate that-in the rat model-CLP-induced sepsis leads to impaired cardiac function. Furthermore, induction of the expression of mitochondrial function-related genes indicated that myocardial cell mitochondrial function was disrupted, further aggravating cardiomyocyte apoptosis. Phosphorus (P) is an important nutrient for plant and microbial growth. Soil P availabi-lity is poor in subtropical areas. Long-term heavy nitrogen (N) deposition might further reduce P availability. The experiment was performed in a Phyllostachys pubescens forest in Daiyun Mountain. The effects of N application on soil basic physical and chemical properties, soil P fractions, microbial biomass, and acid phosphomonoesterase activity were analyzed after three years of N application. The results showed that N application significantly increased NO 3 - -N content and thus soil N availability, while it significantly reduced the percentage of decomposable organic P to total P, with the ratio of carbon (C) to organic P being over 200. The soil microbial biomass C, microbial biomass P, acid phosphomonoesterase, and the ratio of microbial biomass N to microbial biomass P and microbial biomass C to microbial biomass P were increased as the N application rate increased. There was a significant negative correlation between the percentage of decomposable organic P to total P and microbial biomass P. Consequently, N application enhanced soil P limitation and increased microbial P demand.

One new indole-type alkaloid, α -L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→6)- β -D- glucopyranosyl 6-methoxy-3-indolecarbonate ( 1 ), together with three known alkaloids ( 2 - 4 ), one aromatic acid ( 5 ) and five known saponins ( 6 - 10 ), was isolated from the roots of Clematis florida var. plena . Their structures were established by NMR spectroscopic analysis and acid hydrolysis. In in vivo anti-inflammatory activity, n -butanol extract was found to be potent against ear edema in mice, with inhibition rate of 48.7% at a dose of 800 mg/kg. Furthermore, compounds 8 and 9 obtained from the n -butanol extract exhibited significant anti-inflammatory activities with inhibition rates of 50.9% and 54.7% at a dose of 200 mg/kg.

Background : Hepatitis B virus infection had been identified its relationship with liver diseases, including liver tumors. We aimed to explore diagnostic and prognostic values between the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) complex and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods : We used the GSE14520 dataset to explore diagnostic and prognostic significance between HLA complex and HCC. A nomogram was constructed to predict survival probability of HCC prognosis. Gene set enrichment analysis was explored using gene ontologies and metabolic pathways. Validation of prognostic values of the HLA complex was performed in the Kaplan-Meier Plotter website. Results : We found that HLA-C showed the diagnostic value ( P <0.0001, area under curve: 0.784, sensitivity: 93.14%, specificity: 62.26%). In addition, HLA-DQA1 and HLA-F showed prognostic values for overall survival, and HLA-A, HLA-C, HLA-DPA1 and HLA-DQA1 showed prognostic values for recurrence-free survival (all P ≤ 0.05, elevated 0.927, 0.992, 1.023, 0.918, 0.937 multiples compared to non-tumor tissues, respectively). Gene set enrichment analysis found that they were involved in antigen processing and toll like receptor signalling pathway, etc. The nomogram was evaluated for survival probability of HCC prognosis. Validation analysis indicated that HLA-C, HLA-DPA1, HLA-E, HLA-F and HLA - G were associated with HCC prognosis of overall survival (all P ≤ 0.05, elevated 0.988 and 0.997 multiples compared to non-tumor tissues, respectively). Conclusion : HLA-C might be a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for HCC. The subtropical zone in China is one of the regions most affected by nitrogen deposition. Soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) is considered to be an important indicator of soil organic matter. Nitrogen deposition may alter the quality and quantity of soil DOM by changing soil microbial activity. In this study, we explored the effects of nitrogen addition on soil DOM content, its spectral characteristics and microbial extraceller enzyme activity in the Moso bamboo plantations by setting control (CT), low-nitrogen (LN), and high-nitrogen (HN) addition levels for three-year nitrogen addition. The results showed that there was no significant change in soil pH, dissolved organic carbon, dissolved organic nitrogen, and aroma index following nitrogen addition, while the humification index increased significantly, microbial enzyme activities increased first and then decreased with the increases of nitrogen addition. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results showed that soil DOM had similar absorption peaks in seven regions, and that the absorption peaks of 1000 to 1260 cm -1 were the strongest, indicating an enhanced amount of polysaccharides, alcohols, carboxyl acids, and esters after nitrogen addition. The results of three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy showed that soil DOM structure significantly changed following nitrogen addition, with a decrease in low-molecular substances such as protein-like substances and microbial metabolites and a significant increase in high-molecular substances such as humus-like substances. In general, nitrogen addition made soil nitrogen compatible with microbial requirements. Microorganisms decompose substances that were easily degraded in DOM. The structure of soil DOM was more complex after nitrogen addition. Therefore, short-term nitrogen deposition might be conducive to preserving soil fertility.

Two new phenylspirodrimanes, stachybotrin H (1) and stachybotrysin H (9) together with eleven known analogues (2-8, 10-13) were isolated from deep-sea derived Stachybotrys sp. MCCC 3A00409. Their structures were determined by extensive NMR data and mass spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 9-12 showed weak cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines K562, Hela and HL60 with IC 50 in the range of 18.5-52.8 μM.

Purpose: To investigate the prevalence of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) in undergraduates of Xinjiang Medical University and analyse its possible risk factors., Methods: A sample of 700 medical students included 244 males and 456 females was selected from Xinjiang Medical University and underwent examination of temporomandibular joint, questionnaire survey. Their average age was 20.08±1.457 years. Prevalence of TMD was analyzed, and the possible risk factors associated with the disease were identified by logistic regression analysis with SPSS17.0 software package., Results: The prevalence of TMD was 42.40% in this population. There was no difference between different ethnics. Chewing-side preference, bruxism，orthodontic treatment，tooth extraction，psychological factors，anterior overjet, posterior scissors-bite were the main risk factors which increased the occurrence of TMD., Conclusions: Poor oral habits, psychological factors and malocclusion were related to the development of TMD.

Enduracidin significantly inhibits Gram-positive bacteria and had been widely used in many fields. However, as the poor technology for production of enduracidin and its scarcity, identification of novel strategies for production of enduracidin is important. Our group developed two methods to improve the yield of the production of enduracidin. The yield of enduracidin was increased by three- to fivefold. The highest yields of enduracidin A and enduracidin B achieved were 63.7 and 82.13 mg/ml. Thus, our results might provide a new reference method for the industrial production of enduracidin.

Soil P fraction, microbial biomass P (MBP), and activities of acid phosphomonoesterase (ACP) and phosphodiesterase (PD) were analyzed under evergreen broad-leaved forest, mixed forest and coniferous forest in Daiyun Mountains. The results showed that labile-P comprised only 1.0%-4.5% of soil total phosphorus (TP). The ratio of soil carbon to organic phosphorus (C:Po) was >200, indicating phosphorus limitation across the three vegetation types. Organic phosphorus (Po) was a significant fraction of soil P, which accounted for 44.8%-47.1% and 28.6%-30.6% of TP in A and B horizons, respectively. Results from the redundancy analysis showed that the changes in P fractions were mainly driven by PD in the A horizon and by ACP in the B horizon. Moreover, the activities of PD and ACP had a significant negative correlation with Po. The results suggested that phosphorus deficiency occurred in the three vegetation types, and that PD and ACP could play major roles in the depletion of soil Po in response to phosphorus limitation in subtropical forests.

The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) as one part of nuclear ribosomal DNA is one of the most extensively sequenced molecular markers in plant systematics. The ITS repeats generally exhibit high-level within-individual homogeneity, while relatively small-scale polymorphism of ITS copies within individuals has often been reported in literature. Here, we identified large-scale polymorphism of ITS copies within individuals in the legume genus Lespedeza (Fabaceae). Divergent paralogs of ITS sequences, including putative pseudogenes, recombinants, and multiple functional ITS copies were sometimes detected in the same individual. Thirty-seven ITS pseudogenes could be easily detected according to nucleotide changes in conserved 5.8S motives, the significantly lower GC contents in at least one of three regions, and the lost ability of 5.8S rDNA sequence to fold into a conserved secondary structure. The distribution patterns of the putative functional clones were highly different between the traditionally recognized two subgenera, suggesting different rates of concerted evolution in two subgenera which could be attributable to their different extents/frequencies of hybridization, confirmed by our analysis of the single-copy nuclear gene PGK. These findings have significant implications in using ITS marker for reconstructing phylogeny and studying hybridization.

Four new tirucallane triterpenoids, (21S,23R,24R)-21,23-epoxy-21,24-dihydroxy-25-methoxytirucall-7-en-3-one (2), (3S,21S,23R,24S)-21,23-epoxy-21,25-dimethoxytirucall-7-ene-3,24-diol (8), (21S,23R,24R)-21,23-epoxy-24-hydroxy-21-methoxytirucalla-7,25-dien-3-one (11), and (21S,23R,24R)-21,23-epoxy-21,24-dihydroxytirucalla-7,25-dien-3-one (12), along with 16 known analogues, 1, 3 - 7, 9 - 10, and 13 - 20, were isolated from the fruits of Melia azedarach. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods including 1D- and 2D-NMR techniques and mass spectrometry. These compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxicities against HepG2 (liver), SGC7901 (stomach), K562 (leukemia), and HL60 (leukemia) cancer cell lines. Compound 20 exhibited potent cytotoxicity against HepG2 and SGC7901 cancer cells with the IC 50 values of 6.9 and 6.9 μm, respectively., (© 2016 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland.)

An organocatalytic enantioselective domino α-amination/oxidative coupling/cyclization of thioamides to azodicarboxylates catalyzed by an easily available organic catalyst has been developed. The key step, oxidative coupling, is smoothly fulfilled in air. Optically active spiroannulated 1,2,3-thiadiazole derivatives are obtained with high yields and enantioselectivities for the first time.

Sichuan torrent frog, Amolops mantzorum (family Ranidae, suborder Neobatrachia), possesses heteromorphic sex chromosomes unusual characteristics among amphibians. We determined the complete nucleotide sequence of the A. mantzorum mitogenome. This genome is 17,744 bp in length and contains 37 genes, 1 control region, and 1 light strand replication origin typically found in vertebrate mtDNAs. In the A. mantzorum mitogenome, a novel gene arrangement is observed within the WANCY tRNA gene cluster region. This mt gene arrangement seems to be usable as a molecular maker to distinguish to this species from other species in the genus Amolops.

A formal thio [3+2] cyclization catalyzed by Takemoto's organocatalyst has been reported for the construction of optically active spiroannulated dihydrothiophenes in high yields with excellent regio-, chemo-, diastereo-, and enantioselectivities.

The application evaluation of "Standards for Control and Elimination of Malaria" was carried out in 11 epidemic provinces/autonomous regions by questionnaires, field investigation and special interviews from January to May, 2014. Two hundred and forty questionnaires were completed by the personnel from the health administrations and the institutions of disease control and prevention. The questionnaire response rate was 84% (240/285). Totally 90% participants had known and used this standards. In detail, managers from the health administration departments had a percent of 100.0% (26/26), while professionals in the institutions of disease control and prevention had a percent of 88.8% (190/214). In malaria-endemic provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities, 18 training classes of malaria control and prevention were held from January 2012 to December 2013. This standards was one of the main contents. One hundred and fifty-two pieces of suggestion and recommendation were obtained, with 84.2% (128/152) relating to personnel and supporting conditions, and 15.8% (24/152) on technical issues.

Nanosized noble metallic particles enclosed by high-index facets exhibit superior catalytic activity because of their high density of low-coordinated step atoms at the surface, and thus have attracted growing interest over the past decade. In this article, we employed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the thermodynamic evolution of tetrahexahedral Rh nanoparticles respectively covered by {210}, {310}, and {830} facets during the heating process. Our results reveal that the {210} faceted nanoparticle exhibits better thermal and shape stability than the {310} and {830} faceted ones. Meanwhile, because the {830} facet consists of {210} and {310} subfacets, the stability of the {830} faceted Rh nanoparticle is dominated by the {310} subfacet, which possesses a relatively poor stability. Furthermore, the shape transformation of these nanoparticles occurs much earlier than their melting. Further analyses indicate that surface atoms with higher coordination numbers display lower surface diffusivity, and are thus more helpful for stabilizing the particle shape. This study offers an atomistic understanding of the thermodynamic behaviors of high-index-faceted Rh nanoparticles.

Although several recent studies have investigated the major phylogenetic relationships within Hynobiidae, their evolutionary history remains partially resolved and the phylogenetic positions of some genera, particularly Pachyhynobius and Salamandrella are still disputed. Notably, previous studies relied primarily on mitochondrial DNA data and concatenated analyses; thus, a new investigation based on multiple nuclear genes and species-tree inference is needed. Here, we provide an in-depth phylogenetic analysis, based on 29 nuclear genes comprising 29,232bp of data from a comprehensive taxonomic sampling (24 hynobiids and 7 outgroups), using both concatenated and species-tree methods. Our results robustly resolved most genus-level relationships within Hynobiidae, including the placement of Salamandrella as the sister group to a clade containing Batrachuperus, Liua and Pseudohynobius, and the placement of Pachyhynobius as the sister group to a clade containing all hynobiids excluding Onychodactylus, Paradactylodon and Ranodon. Time estimates based on our data suggest that the major group of living hynobiids (excluding Onychodactylus) originated approximately 40Ma, ∼50% younger than estimates from mtDNA data (62.5Ma) but 10% older than estimates from three nuclear genes (36Ma).
