In this paper, we present a novel, almost-digital approach for bolometer readout circuits to overcome the area and power dissipation bottlenecks of analog-based classical microbolometer circuits. A current-controlled oscillator (CCO)-based analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is utilized instead of a capacitive transimpedance amplifier (CTIA) in the classical readout circuits. This approach, which has not been reported before, both produces the required gain in the bolometer input circuit and directly digitizes the bolometer signal. With the proposed architecture, the need for large capacitances (of the order of 10-15 pF for each column) at which the current is accumulated in the bolometer circuits and the voltage headroom limitation of classical microbolometer circuits are eliminated. Therefore, the proposed architecture permits to design readout circuits with reduced pixel pitch and lower power supply, both of which in turn lead to higher-resolution Focal Plane Arrays (FPAs) with lower power dissipation. The new architecture is modeled and simulated using a 180-nm CMOS process for sensitivity, noise performance, and power dissipation. Unlike the 3.3-V power supply usage of classical readout circuits, the proposed design utilizes 1.2-V analog and 0.9-V digital supply voltages with a power dissipation of almost half of the classical approach.

Bu çalışmada, veri depolama için kod bölmeli çoklu erişim tekniğini kullanan yeni bir fiber-optik dönel memory konfigürasyonu araştırılmıştır. Kod bölmeli çoklu erişim tekniği ve performansı incelenmiştir. Daha önce geliştirilmiş bazı optik veri depolama sistemleri ve ilgili kavramlar sunulmuştur. Optik kod bölmeli çoklu erişimi kullanan fiber-optik dönel hafıza yapısı tanıtılmıştır. Hafıza yazma, okuma ve silme işlemlerini örneklerle gösteren bir program geliştirilmiştir. Bit-hata ihtimali performansım geliştirmek amacıyla hafıza yapısının veri çözümleme kısmında çift optik sınırlayıcı kullanılması önerilmiş ve performans analizi yapılmıştır.Anahtar Kelimeler: Optik kod bölmeli çoklu erişim, fiber-optik dönel hafıza. In this study, a new fiber-optic loop memory configuration which uses optical code division multiple access technique for data storage is investigated. Code division multiple access technique and its performance in optical medium is reviewed. Some of the previously developed optical data storage systems and related concepts are summerized. The fiber-optic loop memory structure using optical CDMA is proposed. A simulation program is developed for the investigation of memory read, write and clear operations. In order to improve the performance, use of double optical hard-limiters in the decoding part of the memory is proposed. Kablolu ve kablosuz haberleşme alıcı zincirlerinde sinyal gücünün hesaplanması,alıcının toplam kazancının güç tahminlerine dayalı olarak karar verilmesindendolayı önemli bir fonksiyondur. Alıcı kazancının ayarlanması, alıcının gürültüfaktörünü ve alıcının çıkışındaki bozulma miktarını etkiler (Analog-Dijital çeviricigirişi). Alıcının tamamının kazancını belirlemek için birçok RF (Radio Frequency)ve IF (Intermediate Frequency) blokların kazancının ayarlanması otomatik kazançkontrol döngüleri sayesinde gerçekleştirilir. Kazanç control döngüleri analog güçbulma ve tahmin etme teknikleri kullanan analog bloklar kullanılarak icra edilir. RFfrekanslarında kullanılan yonga-üstü analog güç hesaplama devreleri zarf bulma velogaritmik yükseltme gibi teknikler temel alınarak tasarlanmaktadır. Bu tekniklerproses, voltaj, sıcaklık (PVT) serpilmelerine (özellikle ana transistor transkondaktans değişimlerinden kaynaklı hassasiyet problemlerine) maruz kalmaktadır. Bu durum güç-optimize tasarımların gerçekleşmesine engel teşkiletmektedir. Bu tezde sunulan alt-örnekleme güç tahmini metodu sadece-analogusüllerin aksine çok sıkı control edilebilen güç tahmini karakteristiklerine sahiptir.Alt-örnekleme yaklaşımı çok düşük PVT serpilmesine sahiptir. Bu serpilmeninkaynağı da temelde analog bir blok olan ve Analog-Dijital Çeviricinin girişinde yeralan örnekle-ve-tut yükseltecidir. Sıcaklık değişimlerinden kaynaklı güç hesaplamahataları kendi-kendine kalibrasyon kullanılmasıyla telafi edilebilir. Bu kalibrasyonAnalog-Dijital Çevirici çıkışındaki `güç tahminine` karşılık `dijital kod` tablosunudinamik olarak değiştiren bir `look-up` tablosu sayesinde sağlanabilir. Alt-örnekleme metodunun geçerliliğini doğrulamak maksadıyla, genlik modulasyonlu(AM) ve kuadratik genlik modülasyonlu (QAM) bir ses sinyalinin gücününhesaplanması için bir MATLAB kodu geliştirildi. Nyquist örnekleme ve alt-örnekleme güç tahmini değerleri arasındaki hata alt-örnekleme metodunungeçerliliğini ölçmek için temel parametre olarak tanımlandı. Elde edilensonuçlar, RF taşıyıcı frekanslarda modulasyona tabi tutulmuş sinyallerin güçtahminlerinin Nyquist örnekleme hızlarından çok dahaaşağı hızlarda başarılabileceğini doğrulamaktadır. The estimation of received signal power in wireline and wirelesscommunication receiver chains is an important task since the total gain of thereceiver chain is decided based on the power estimates. The setting of the receivergain affects the noise figure of the receiver and the amount of distortion at the outputof the receiver (Analog-to-Digital converter input). Adjusting the gain of severalRF (Radio Frequency) and IF (Intermediate Frequency) blocks to set the overallreceiver gain is carried out with Automatic Gain Control (AGC) loops, which areusually implemented as analog blocks employing analog power detection andestimation techniques. On-chip analog power estimation circuits used in RFfrequencies are based on techniques such as envelope detection, and logarithmicamplification. These techniques suffer from accuracy issues such as process,voltage, temperature (PVT) spreads (primarily due to transconductance variation ofcore transistors), which prevents the realization of power-optimum designs. Thiswork proposes an alternative method of measuring the power of an RF or IF signalwith a subsampling analog-to-digital converter (ADC). This method presented inthis thesis, which is called subsampling power estimation, being mainly digital, hasa very tightly controlled power estimation characteristic unlike analog-onlymethods. The subsampling approach has a very low PVT spread due mainly to thesample and hold amplifier at the input stage of the ADC. Power estimation errorsdue to temperature variations may be compensated through self-calibration bygenerating a dynamically changing look-up table that would contain the powerestimate vs. the digital code at the ADC output. In order to verify the validity of thexiisubsampling method, an MATLAB code was developed to find the power of avoice signal with amplitude modulation (AM) and quadrature amplitudemodulation (QAM). The error between the Nyquist sampling and subsamplingapproaches is defined as the main parameter to verify the validity of thesubsampling method. In simulations, it was found that the error was withinapproximately +0.1 dB for the power estimation of AM modulated signal, and -0.148 dB for the QAM modulated signal. Results confirm that the estimation ofpower of RF signals could be achieved at much lower sampling rates rather thanNyquist rate. This would reduce the complexity of power estimation circuits whichresults in lower design cost. 94
