Abstract

A study was conducted to analyze dilute solutions of the ganglioside GM3 in water using small-angle neutron and x-ray scattering techniques. The ganglioside was prepared as sodium salt. Two different wavelengths were utilized to carry out experiments of small-angle neutron scattering. In addition, the Huxley-Holmes camera was used to perform small-angle x-ray scattering. Results indicated thickness fluctuations originating from the mismatch between headgroup and chains lateral hindrances.

Abstract

The issue of the origin of the bending rigidity of a charged membrane formed from amphiphilic molecules is addressed. Electrostatic effects are investigated by direct measurement of the force that is required for deforming a catanionic membrane as function of the ionic strength of the medium by means of an atomic force microscope.

Abstract

The three main currently proposed approaches for understanding specific ion effects are briefly described. In some experimentally well defined and simplified situations, one can decouple ion specificity effects from all others. Small globular micelles in water/salt mixtures are one of the simple situations where specific ion effects can be distinguished: 'hydrophobic ions' introduced by Hofmeister in the late 19th century, also called 'structure breaking' or 'salting in' ions, which are similar to 'soft ions' in the classification introduced by Pearson, are more strongly adsorbed on the micellar surface than predicted by electrostatics alone. Hence, lateral repulsions between surfactants are increased, resulting in a measurable and calculable decrease of micelle size when adsorbing anions such as bromide replace non-adsorbing anions such as chloride. © 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract

Recent progresses in the understanding of properties of catanionic surfactant aggregates are reviewed. These aggregates are charged microcrystals produced upon co-crystallisation of anionic and cationic surfactants without excess salt. They were studied applying methods developed for polyelectrolyte multilayered capsules. They have been observed without special preparation by soft X-ray microscopy. Confocal optical microscopy allowed first measurements of the diameter of the holes present at vertices. These observations could be rationalized by identifying the formation path in the phase prism. Rigidity was measured directly using the colloidal probe method and calculated using mesoscopic modelling. These progresses made within of the French-German network are discussed versus recent results obtained by other groups working on catanionics. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
