While computer animations have the potential to assist learners in understanding difficult concepts and eliminating misconceptions, studies supporting this claim are scarce. This study investigated how the 7E instructional model integrated with computer animations affected students' conceptual understanding and misconceptions about food making and plant growth. Experimental groups were taught the 7E learning cycle model [7E LCM], and 7E LCM with computer animation [CA] while the control group was taught the conventional instruction method. A two-tiered conceptual understanding multiple-choice test and semi-structured interviews were used to collect the data. ANOVA analysis revealed no significant differences between groups or genders in pre-food making and growth in plant conceptual understanding [pre-FMGPCU] and pre-misconceptions test scores [pre-MC]. There were, however, significant differences in post-FMGPCU and post-MC mean scores, with the 7E LCM with CA showing better results in improving conceptual understanding and minimizing misconceptions. MANOVA revealed no statistically significant difference between male and female students' post-FMGPCU and post-MC results. It was concluded that the 7E LCM with CA enhances students' conceptual understanding and minimizes misconceptions more effectively than other instructional approaches. It is recommended that similar designs be used in biology teaching.

Female genital mutilation causes short- and long-term complications like bleeding, pain, infection and exposes girls to sexually transmitted diseases. The determinants of female genital mutilation among children under the age of five have received less attention. As a result, the purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence female genital mutilation in children under the age of five.Methods: A community-based unmatched case control study design was used. The study participants were chosen using computer-generated simple random sampling technique. With a ratio of 1:4 between cases and controls, 323 participants were recruited. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The association between each independent variable and the dependent variable was determined using binary logistic regression. In a multivariable analysis, variables were considered statistically significant if they had a P-value of less than 0.05 at a 95% confidence interval.Results: In this study, mothers’ circumcision status (AOR = 4.6; 95% CI: 2.29– 9.25), mothers who had an unfavorable attitude (AOR = 4.15; 95% CI: 1.96– 8.82), households in the poorest wealth quintile (AOR = 3.65; 95% CI: 1.2– 11.54), mothers who had inadequate knowledge (AOR = 3.31; 95% CI: 1.51– 7.25) and antenatal care visit of mothers (AOR = 2.46; 95% CI: 1.03– 5.83) were found to be determinant factors of female genital mutilation.Conclusion and Recommendation: Mothers’ circumcision status, mother’s attitude, wealth quintile, knowledge of mothers, and number of antenatal care visits were factors associated with female genital mutilation. Half of the patients with stroke and heart disease were due to hypertension.Objective: This study aimed to identify prevalence of hypertension and its associated factors in Gimbi town, Ethiopia.Methods: We conducted a community-based cross-sectional study from May to June 2017 on 471 participants in Gimbi town, western Ethiopia. A systematic sampling method was used to recruit study participants. Data collectors used structured questionnaires to gather data through face to face interview. The standardized procedure followed to measure blood pressure and anthropometric measurements by trained extension health workers. We entered data into Epi-data and exported to SPSS version 20.00 for analysis. Variables having a P-value less than or equal to 0.05 were declared as statistically significant in multivariable analysis.Results: Four hundred seventy-one participants were included with a response rate of 98.85%, and 248 (52.6%) were female. The prevalence of isolated systolic and diastolic hypertension was 9.55% and 9.3%, respectively. Of 157 (33.5%) hypertensive participants, 117 (24.8%) were newly diagnosed. Age 35– 55 [AOR: 2.335 95% CI (1.360– 4.009)], ≥ 55 [(AOR: 3.566 95% CI (1.288– 9.876))], occupation, government employee [(AOR: 3.072 95% CI (1.458– 6.474))], merchants [(AOR: 3.177 95% CI (1.290– 7.824))], ever alcohol drinker [(AOR: 2.333 95% CI (1.320– 4.122))], and family history of hypertension [(AOR: 6.642 95% CI (4.068– 10.843))] were found to be predictor variables for hypertension.Conclusion: The findings of this study indicated a hidden high prevalence of hypertension indicating the need for stakeholders’ collaboration to design and implement a mobile blood pressure screening programs at the community level.Keywords: hypertension, increased blood pressure, non-communicable disease, Ethiopia

Background: Cervical cancer is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), especially HPV-16 and HPV-18. It is a health crisis impacting women and their families across the world -- especially in low-resource settings. Despite acknowledging the importance of cervical cancer screening for early prevention, there is limited information available to the people of Wolaita Zone, Sodo Town, about utilising the cervical cancer screening service. This study aimed to assess cervical cancer screening utilisation and its associated factors among women aged 30 years and above in Wolaita Zone, Sodo Town, southern Ethiopia, during 2020. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 574 women aged 30 years and older from 1 May 2020 to 30 June 2020. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. Data entry was done using EpiData (version 3.1) and exported to IBM SPSS Statistics (version 23) for analysis. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were done to identify variables that have a significant association with cervical cancer screening utilisation. Results: The overall proportion of cervical cancer screening utilisation among participants was 15.2% with a 95% CI of 13.9-16.7) This finding also revealed that a higher educational level (AOR = 3.74, 95% CI 1.39-10.07), a better average monthly income (AOR = 4.54, 95% CI 1.86-11.07), a history of STD in a participant's lifetime (AOR = 2.85, 95% CI 1.22-6.66), family history of cervical cancer (AOR = 4.37, 95% CI 1.75-10.92), having good knowledge about cervical cancer screening (AOR = 2.53, 95% CI 1.42-4.50) and having a favourable attitude towards cervical cancer screening (AOR = 2.50, 95% CI 1.34-4.66) were aspects significantly associated with cervical cancer screening utilisation. Conclusion: This study showed that the level of cervical cancer screening utilisation was low. There is thus a need for stakeholders to create awareness about cervical cancer screening utilisation at the community level, particularly for women 30 years and older. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective Our aim was to systematically review published articles for the prevalence of persistent estrogen depletion symptoms among women aged 65+ years. Methods A systematic literature search of English-language publications was performed using MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and PsycINFO. Twenty-three studies that included information on the prevalence of vasomotor and/or urogenital atrophy symptoms among older women (65 + years) met our inclusion criteria. Risk of bias of the included studies was assessed using a risk-of-bias tool explicitly designed for the systematic review of prevalence studies. Results The available data suggest that vasomotor symptoms are experienced by a considerable proportion of older women, that symptoms of urogenital atrophy including urinary incontinence are widespread, and that women remain sexually active well into later life. A high degree of variability was observed for the prevalence of estrogen deficiency symptoms for women age 65+ years. Discrepancies in modes of recruitment, sampling procedures, time frames over which symptoms were assessed and use of different and non-validated assessment tools contributed to the inconsistencies across the published studies. Conclusion Larger and appropriately sampled studies, employing validated questionnaires, are still needed to establish the prevalence of persistent estrogen depletion symptoms in women aged 65 + years. Recently hospital managers and designers become more interested in 'patient centered design' (PCD) through the integration of patients' perceptions and expectations of the hospitals' physical environment. This increased interest in PCD indicates the improved understanding of the impacts of hospital's physical environment on all users including patients, families and hospital staff. Literature shows that incorporating users' perceptions of the physical environment during the design process is very important to produce PCD. The current study is aimed at assessing the impacts of four demographic factors namely: age, sex, education level and area of residence on users' perceptions of hospitals' physical environment. Five principal design factors were identified: views, safety &comfort, facilities &way finding, architectural & hygiene and sensory. For the questionnaire survey, the statistical analysis has been conducted with IBM SPSS Statistics version 27.0. Demographic data was analyzed descriptively by computing frequencies and percentages. Then the descriptive statistics for the items i.e. frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations (SD) were computed. Non-parametric tests were applied to assess variances in constructed principal dimensions concerning users' demographic factors. The users of two hospitals: Nekemte specialized hospital & Paulos comprehensive hospital participated in the survey. A total of 480 respondents were participated in ranking the importance of 21 questionnaire items on 5-point Likert scale. The result reveals that education level has a significance role (p-value = 00.001,00.002,0.032) for the difference between perceptions of three out of five summated design factors namely; views, facilities & way finding and architectural& hygiene respectively. Similarly, residence area has significantly contributed for the difference in users' perceptions ( P -value = 00.001, 00.001, 0.025) on three summated design factors; views, safety &comfort and architectural & hygiene respectively. Excessive occupational exposure to noise results in a well-recognized occupational hearing loss which is prevalent in many workplaces and now it is taken as a global problem. Therefore, this study aims to assess the prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss and associated factors among workers in the Bishoftu Central Air Base in Ethiopia. An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 260 central air base workers through face-to-face interviews, an environment noise survey, and an audiometric test for data collection. Data were entered by Epi-data version 3.1 and SPSS was used to analyze the data. Finally, a statistical analysis such as descriptive and binary logistic regression analysis was applied. A P-value < 0.05 at 95% CI was considered statistically significant. The overall prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss and hearing impairments was 24.6 and 30.9%, respectively. The highest prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss was recorded for workers who were exposed to noise levels greater than 90 dBA. Out of 132 workers exposed to the average noise level of 75 dB A, only 5% of workers were affected with noise-induced hearing loss, while 128 workers exposed to an average noise level equal to or greater than 90 dB A, 19.6% of workers were identified with noise-induced hearing loss. Regarding sex, around 21.9% of male workers were identified with noise-induced hearing loss. Workers who were exposed to a high noise level workplace previously or before the Central Air Base workplace were five times (AOR = 5.0, 95% CI 1.74-14.36) more likely affected by noise-induced hearing loss than those workers not previously exposed. Those workers who were exposed to greater or equal to 90dBA noise level were 4.98 times (AOR = 4.98, 95% CI 2.59-9.58) more likely to be exposed to noise-induced levels than those who were exposed to less than 90dBA noise level. Moreover, male air base workers were 3.5 times more likely exposed to hearing impairment than female workers (AOR = 3.5, 95% CI 1.01-12.0). This study identified that the prevalence of noise-induced hearing loss and hearing impairments was significantly high. Background: Modern medicine is not the choice of patients with "shimetere" in the Gurage community owing to their perception of 'parenteral medication use severely aggravates the disease'. For this reason, the root part of Polygala sadebeckiana Gürke is commonly utilized as traditional medicine in the management of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Polygala sadebeckiana Gürke extract on bacterial isolates from wound samples of patients with "Shimetere"., Methods: The agar well diffusion method was used to evaluate antibacterial activity, and the agar dilution method was utilized to determine minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MICs). The crude extract was tested against isolated bacteria at concentrations of 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/mL in triplicate (3x). The positive controls were azithromycin (15 µg) and cloxacillin disk (5 µg), and the negative control was dimethylsulfoxide (5%). The group mean comparisons were made using one-way ANOVA at a significance level of p < 0.05, and the results are presented as the mean ± standard deviation. The presence of secondary metabolites from crude extract was checked by standard testing procedures., Results: S. aureus and S. pyrogen were the two identified bacteria from 9 (60%) and 3 (20%) wound samples, respectively. All identified bacterial strains were susceptible to the reference antibiotics. Tannins and saponins were the most abundant secondary metabolites found in the crude extracts. The average inhibition zones of the plant extracts with 100, 75, 50 and 25 mg/mL concentrations were 27, 20.33, 15.25, and 11.96 mm (p < 0.000) for S. aureus and 30.02, 24.50, 19.07, and 15.77 mm (p < 0.000) for S. pyrogen bacteria, respectively. The MIC and MBC of the crude extract were 1.67 and 10 mg/mL for S. aureus and 0.98 and 4 mg/mL for S. pyrogen., Conclusion: Polygala sadebeckiana Gürke contained significant tannins and saponins as secondary metabolites and had antibacterial activities against isolated bacteria (S. aureus and S. pyrogen) from "Shimetere". Introduction: The World Health Organization declared COVID-19 is a pandemic disease. Countries should take standard measures and responses to battle the effects of the viruses. However, little is known in Ethiopia regarding the recommended preventive behavioral messages responses. Therefore, the study aimed to assess the response to COVID-19 recommended preventive behavioral messages., Methods: Community-based cross-sectional study design was carried out from 1 to 20, July 2020. We recruited 634 respondents by using a systematic sampling method. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package Software for Social Sciences version 23. Association between variables were explored using a bivariable and multi variable logistic regression model. The strength of the association is presented using odds ratio and regression coefficient with 95% confidence interval. A p-value of less than 0.05 was declared statistically significant., Results: Three hundred thirty-six (53.1%) of respondents had good response to recommended preventive behavioral messages. The general precise rate of the knowledge questionnaire was 92.21%. The study showed that merchant was 1.86 (p ≈ 0.01) times more likely respond to COVID-19 recommended preventive behavioral messages than government-employed. Respondents who scored one unit increase for self-efficacy and response-efficacy, the odds of responding to COVID-19 recommended preventive behavioral messages were increased by 1.22 (p < 0.001), and 1.05 times (p = 0.002) respectively. Respondents who scored one unit increase to cues to action, the odds of responding to COVID-19 recommended preventive behavioral messages were 43% (p < 0.001) less likely., Conclusion: Even though respondents were highly knowledgeable about COVID-19, there is a lower level of applying response to recommended preventive behavioral messages. Merchant, self-efficacy, response efficacy, and cues to action were significantly associated with response to recommended preventive behavioral messages. Like merchants, government employer should be applying preventive behavioral messages and also, participants' self and response efficacy should be strengthened to improve the response. In addition, we should be changed or modified the way how-to deliver relevant information, promoting awareness, and also using appropriate reminder systems to preventive behavioral messages., (© 2023. Background: Tinea capitis accounts for25 to 30% of all fungal infections, but it is often ignored because it is not life threatening in nature. It is more common among schoolchildren particularly in developing countries. Due to the presence of significant variability among the previous studies, this study was conducted to provide a pooled prevalence and associated factors of tinea capitis in Ethiopian schoolchildren., Method: We conducted a systematic search in five major databases for articles similar to our topic. This review included school-based cross-sectional studies that were reported in English and conducted from 2006 through 2022. The data were extracted using Microsoft Excel and further analysis was done using StataTM Version 17.0 statistical software. Forest plots were used to assess the presence of heterogeneity with 95% confidence intervals. A random effects meta- analysis model was used to pool primary estimates. To declare the presence or absence of association, 95% confidence interval with odds ratio was used., Results: Fourteen studies with a total of 9465 schoolchildren were included. The pooled prevalence was 29.03% (95%CI: 15.37-42.71). There was observed heterogeneity, which could be explained by publication bias (P = 0.04). Family history of tinea capitis (OR: 9.18, 95%CI: 3.5-24.02), under the age of 10 years (OR: 1.65, 95%CI: 1.17-2.33) were factors increasing the development of tinea capitis among schoolchildren and schoolchildren who had hair wash at least once a week (OR: 0.31, 95%CI: 0.24-0.42) was significantly associated with reduced risk for tinea capitis., Conclusion: One of the most prevalent childhood health condition in Ethiopia is tinea capitis, which affects over one in every four schoolchildren. Schoolchildren who had family history of tinea capitis and under the age of 10 years were the identified risk factors but they had hair wash at least once a week was the protective factor of tinea capitis among schoolchildren. Background: The long term effects of exposure to radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMF) for frequencies from 100 kHz to 300 GHz on cognitive performance are best assessed using observational studies. In recent years, the use of mobile (cell) phones has been the main source of RF EMF exposure to the brain, although other sources of exposure may be significant. Cognitive function includes various mental and psychological abilities, which can be measured in a range of domains, such as learning, memory, reasoning, problem solving, decision making and attention. Although effects on cognitive function may be most evident later in life, in the experimental setting acute and immediate effects can only be studied. Observational studies are needed when effects are observed after months or years following short or long-term exposure. The importance of the effects of exposure on children has also been recently identified., Objectives: To assess the long-term effects of RF EMF local and whole-body exposure compared to no or a lower level of exposure on indicators of cognition, including complex attention, executive function, learning and memory, perceptual motor ability and social cognition, but excluding cognitive effects caused by neurodegenerative diseases or neurodevelopmental disorders, and to assess if there is evidence of a dose response relationship., Study Eligibility and Criteria: We will include observational studies that have evaluated cognitive effects of RF energy including a comparator group with a different level of exposure. Studies must report at least one validated measure of cognitive function, including global or domain specific measures, or cognitive impairment, with a minimum follow-up of 6 months. Cohort or case-control studies published in the peer review literature in any language are eligible. We will exclude cross-sectional studies and any that only report brain structure or biomarkers., Study Appraisal and Synthesis Method: We will conduct searches of PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO and the EMF-Portal. At least two authors will independently screen the titles/abstracts of all records, with any conflicts resolved by a third reviewer. Full-text screening will also be conducted independently by two authors with conflicts resolved by consensus. Data will be extracted from the studies included, such as identifiers and characteristics of the study design, exposure and comparator groups, participants, outcomes assessed and results. Risk of bias will be assessed with the Office of Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT) tool. We will conduct a meta-analysis of similar studies with a random effects model in STATA or similar software, if two or more studies are available for a given exposure-outcome combination. Background: Though cervical cancer is largely preventable, it is still the second most common female cancer globally and the leading cause of cancer deaths among females in African. Though many efforts have been done to study the burden of the disease in Ethiopia, primary studies examining the prevalence of precancerous cervical lesions are fragmented. Hence, this systematic review and meta-analysis is aimed at estimating the pooled prevalence of precancerous cervical lesion and its trends in Ethiopia., Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using the following electronic databases. PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, Science Direct, Google Scholar, African Index Medicus (AIM), African Journals Online databases, and Addis Ababa and Bahir Dar Universities research repositories were searched following the Preferred Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) Guideline. STATA 15 statistical software was used to analyze the data. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) quality appraisal tool for meta-analysis. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using the Cochrane Q test and I 2 test statistics based on the random effects model. A random effects model was computed to estimate the pooled prevalence of precancerous cervical lesion in Ethiopia. Finally, the trend of precancerous cervical lesion in the country was presented., Result: Seventeen studies with a total of 26,112 participants were included in the analysis. The pooled prevalence of precancerous cervical lesion was 15.16 (95% CI 10.16-19.70). The subgroup analysis by region showed the highest prevalence of precancerous cervical lesion at the Southern Nations and Nationalities Peoples Region (19.65%; 95% CI 15.51-23.80). The trend of precancerous cervical lesion prevalence showed an increased pattern over time., Conclusion: Approximately one among six of the study participants had precancerous cervical lesion. The trend also showed that there is still an increasing precancerous cervical lesion in Ethiopia. Background: The burden and contribution of modifiable risk factors of stroke in Ethiopia are unclear. Knowledge about this burden and modifying risk factors is pivotal for establishing stroke prevention strategies. In recent decades, the issue of lifestyle and behavioral modification is a key to improve the quality of life. The modifiable risk factors are an importance as intervention strategies aimed at reducing these factors can subsequently reduce the risk of stroke. So far, many primary studies were conducted to estimate the burden of stroke and modifiable risk factors in Ethiopia. However, the lack of a nationwide study that determines the overall pooled estimation of burden and modifiable risk factors of stroke is a research gap., Methods: To conduct this systemic review and meta-analysis, we are following the PRISMA checklist. Three authors searched and extracted the data from the CINAHL (EBSCO), MEDLINE (via Ovid), PubMed, EMcare, African Journals Online (AJOL), and Google scholar. The quality of the primary study was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) by two independent reviewers. The primary studies with low and moderate risk of bias were included in the final analysis. The authors presented the pooled estimated burden of stroke and its modifiable risk factors. The registered protocol number in PROSPERO was CRD42020221906., Results: In this study, the pooled burden of hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke were 46.42% (95%CI: 41.82-51.53; I2 = 91.6%) and 51.40% (95%CI: 46.97-55.82; I2 = 85.5%) respectively. The overall magnitude of modifiable risk factor of hypertension, alcohol consumption and dyslipidemia among stroke patients were 49% (95%CI: 43.59, 54.41), 24.96% (95CI%:15.01, 34.90), and 20.99% (95%CI: 11.10, 30.88), respectively. The least proportion of stroke recovery was in the Oromia region (67.38 (95%CI: 41.60-93.17; I2 = 98.1%). Farther more, the proportion of stroke recovery was decreased after 2017 (70.50 (56.80-84.20)., Conclusions: In our study, more than 90% of stroke patients had one or more modifiable risk factors. All identified modifiable stroke risk factors are major public health issues in Ethiopia. Therefore, strategy is designed for stroke prevention to decrease stroke burden through targeted modification of a single risk factor, or a cluster of multiple risk factors, used on a population, community, or individual level., Competing Interests: No authors have competing interests.

Introduction: Nurses' intention to leave their job is a worldwide concern. Internal and external brain drain factors are the main reason for nurses' intention to leave their job. So far, in Sub Sahara Africa, several observational studies have been done on nurses' intention to leave their job. However, a comprehensive review that would have a lot of evidence for designing an intervention is lacking. Hence, this study aimed to the pooled status of nurses' intention to leave their job., Methods: In the current meta-analysis, the target variables were searched from different electronic databases. These electronic databases are Pub Med, Google Scholar, Science Direct, African Index Medicus, African Journal Online, EMB ASE, and the Cochran Library. To determine the pooled proportion of intention to leave their job in Sub- Saharan Africa, all the necessary data was extracted by using a standardized data extraction format. We analyzed the data by using Stata 15 statistical software. Heterogeneity between the primary studies assessed by Cochran Q and I-square tests. A random-effect model computes to estimate the pooled nurses' intention to leave their job., Result: We included fifteen full-text studies in the current meta-analysis. The findings of this meta-analysis revealed that the pooled proportion of nurses' intention to leave their job in sub-Saharan Africa was 50.74% (95% CI; 41.33, 60.14; I2 = 95.80%). The subgroup analysis showed that the highest pooled proportion of intention to leave their job (58.03% (95% CI: 47.93, 68.12)) in East Africa. The lowest pooled estimation to leave their job among nurses showed that South Africa (33.04% (95%CI: 20.45, 45.63))., Conclusion: In the current study, there was a high proportion of nurses indentation to leave their job. Nurses' intention to leave their job also varied from region to region in the study area. The current study aimed to investigate how selective reporting of study results indicating increased health effects will influence its receiver's risk perception. Using the example of the Interphone Study from 2010 on mobile phone usage and cancer, an online experiment was conducted separating respondents into two groups. One group of subjects was informed selectively about a relationship between heavy mobile phone use and an elevated risk of glioma (brain cancer) only. The other group of subjects was informed about the full results of the analyses of glioma risk by cumulative call time, which suggests that other than for the heavy users, there were no statistically significant elevated risks related to mobile phone use. The results showed that selective reporting of risk information increased risk perception when compared to receiving the full information. Additionally, the selectively informed subjects revealed a stronger tendency towards overgeneralization of the 'elevated brain cancer risk' to all mobile phone users, although this did not extend to an overgeneralization to other electromagnetic field sources or differences in the perception of a usage time dependency for possible health risks. Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in peoples living with HIV and at least 25% of deaths are attributed to TB. Many countries implement the Universal Test and Treat (UTT) program for HIV, which is believed to reduce the incidence of TB. However, there are limited studies that evaluate the impact of UTT on TB incidence. Therefore, by recruiting a cohort of ART users in the "UTT" and "differed treatment" programs, we aim to measure the effect of the UTT program on TB incidence., Objective: To measure the effect of "UTT" program on TB incidence among a cohort of adults taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Gurage Zone, South Ethiopia., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted through record review over 5 years (2014-2019) in public health facilities in Gurage Zone. Three hundred eighty-four records were randomly selected and reviewed using a standardized structured checklist. Data was entered using Epi Info™ Version 7 and analyzed by STATA. A generalized linear model with binomial link function was fitted to measure the adjusted incidence density/incidence rate ratio and to identify predictors of incidence difference between the two programs., Results: During the follow up period, 39 incident TB cases were identified with an overall incidence rate of 4.79/100 person-year (PY). TB incidence was significantly lower in the UTT cohort (IR = 2.10/100 PY) in comparison to the differed program cohort (IR = 6.23/100 PY). The adjusted incidence rate ratio (AIRR) of TB among patients enrolled in the UTT program was; 0.25 (95% CI = 0.08-0.70). Thus, there was a reduction of TB incidence by 75% in the UTT program compared to differed program. In addition, IPT (isoniazid preventive therapy) use (AIRR = 0.35 (95% CI = 0.22-0.48)), WHO Stage I and II (AIRR = 0.70 (95% CI = 0.61-0.94)) and higher base line CD4 count (AIRR = 0.96 (95% CI = .94-0.99)) significantly reduced the incidence of TB. However, treatment failure increase the incidence (AIRR = 5.8 (95% CI = 1.93-8.46))., Conclusion: TB incidence was significantly reduced by 75% after UTT. Background: Unintended pregnancy is a mistimed, unplanned or unwanted pregnancy at the time of conception. Unintended pregnancy has a number of adverse physical, mental, and social impacts. It brings illegal and unsafe abortions which are causes of maternal morbidity and mortality in the developing countries like Ethiopia. Even if such problem has significant impact on the community, there is scarcity of evidence on this issue in Ethiopian higher institutions. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess unintended pregnancy and associated factors among unmarried female students in Bahir Dar University, North West Ethiopia., Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among unmarried female students at Bahir Dar University from March 1 st - 30 th , 2018. Data were collected by self-administered questionnaire. Data were entered, cleaned, coded and analyzed using SPSS version 23.0. The statistical association between dependent and independent variables was assessed using logistic regressions. P-value <0.05 in the multivariable analysis was set to statistically significant., Result: Three hundred eighty-nine students had participated in the study making the response rate 92.00%. The prevalence of unintended pregnancy was 10.00%. Getting money from family (AOR: 0.16, 95% CI: [0.06, 0.42], p < 0.001) and being Health Science student (AOR: 0.40, 95% CI [0.16, 0.98], p < 0.001) were the preventive factors of unintended pregnancy. Being age of less than or equals to 18 years in the first sexual intercourse time (AOR: 6.31, 95% CI: [2.56, 15.53], p < 0.001) was positively associated with unintended pregnancy., Conclusion: In the current study the prevalence of unintended pregnancy was high among unmarried female University students. Unintended pregnancy was determined by the source of money, field of study and age at first sexual intercourse. Hence, students should use family as a source of money, abstain from early sexual intercourse and share experiences from Health Science students about the prevention of unintended pregnancies. Background: Anemia is one of the most common hematological problems in HIV infected patients in the world. The main aim of this study was to determine the magnitude of anemia and associated factors among HIV infected children on highly active antiretroviral therapy attending University of Gondar Comprehensive and Specialized Referral Hospital., Methods: A retrospective study was conducted from 2013 to 2018 by reviewing medical records at University of Gondar Comprehensive and Specialized Referral Hospital ART clinic. Records of 238 HIV infected children on HAART were selected using a convenient sampling technique. Socio-demographic characteristics, clinical information, and hematological and immunological profiles of the study participants were collected from the patients record books. WHO cutoff value of hemoglobin was taken and adjusted to define anemia in higher altitude. Data was analyzed by using the SPSS version 20 statistical software, and odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were used to quantify the strength of association between anemia and its potential predictors., Results: The overall prevalence of anemia among HIV infected children in this study was 38.7%. Of anemic children, 48.9% had mild, 39.1% moderate, and 11.9% severe anemia. This study showed that HIV infected children on Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy who live in rural residence had a two-fold risk of being anemia than urban dwellers (AOR = 2.151, 95% CI, 1.123 - 4.122). There was no significant association with gender, WHO clinical stage, opportunistic infections, cotrimoxazole treatment, and CD4 count percentage., Conclusions: Anemia is a common problem among the children taking highly active antiretroviral therapy. Therefore, health care workers need to routinely investigate and treat anemia, especially in rural dwellers. Furthermore, large scale and longitudinal studies are recommended to strengthen and explore the problem in depth.

Background: Through universal "test and treat approach" (UTT) it is believed that HIV new infection and AIDS related death will be reduced at community level and through time HIV can be eliminated. With this assumption the UTT program was implemented since 2016. However, the effect of this program in terms of individual patient survival and treatment outcome was not assessed in relation to the pre-existing defer treatment approach., Objective: To assess the effects of UTT program on HIV treatment outcomes and patient survival among a cohort of adult HIV infected patients taking antiretroviral treatment in Gurage zone health facilities., Methods: Institution based retrospective cohort study was conducted in facilities providing HIV care and treatment. Eight years (2012-2019) HIV/AIDS treatment records were included in the study. Five hundred HIV/AIDS treatment records were randomly selected and reviewed. Data were abstracted using standardized checklist by trained health professionals; then it was cleaned, edited and entered by Epi info version 7 and analyzed by STATA. Cox model was built to estimate survival differences across different study variables., Results: A total of 500 patients were followed for 1632.6 person-year (PY) of observation. The overall incidence density rate (IDR) of death in the cohort was 3 per-100-PY. It was significantly higher for differed treatment program, which is 3.8 per-100-PY compared to 2.4 per-100-PY in UTT program with a p value of 0.001. The relative risk of death among differed cases was 1.58 times higher than the UTT cases. The cumulative probability of survival at the end of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years was 98%, 90.2%, 89.2% and 88% respectively with difference between groups. The log rank test and Kaplan-Meier survival curve indicated patients enrolled in the UTT program survived longer than patients enrolled in the differed treatment program (log rank X 2 test = 4.1, p value = 0.04). Age, residence, base line CD4 count, program of enrolment, development of new OIS and treatment failure were predicted mortality from HIV infection., Conclusion: Mortality was significantly reduced after UTT. Therefore, intervention to further reduce deaths has to focus on early initiation of treatment and strengthening UTT programs.

Following publication of the original article [1], similarity with another article by the same authors was reported. The authors would like to clarify that the current study [1] is an update of previous work that used the same data set in the analysis [2]. In Melese and Zeleke [1], the authors found that factors associated with poor treatment outcome were not sufficiently addressed previously. As a result of the reanalysis the effective sample size has changed.

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess workplace stress and associated factors among health care professionals working in public health care facilities in Bahir Dar city, Northwest Ethiopia, 2017., Results: Out of the expected 294 study participants, 253 respondents had participated in the study making the response rate 86.1%. In this study the prevalence of workplace stress was found to be 48.6%. Educational status (AOR: 3.227, 95% CI [(1.358, 7.673) and working experience (AOR: 2.11,95, 95% CI [1.046, 4.260]) were the factors associated with workplace stress. The current study concluded that the prevalence of workplace stress was high among the study participants. Therefore, this study recommended that the health care facilities should work to identify other sources of workplace stress and further large-scale researches need to be done.

Background: Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infections are prevalent and recognized as major cause of gastrointestinal diseases in Ethiopia. However, Studies conducted on the prevalence, risk factors and other clinical forms of H.pylori on different population and geographical areas are reporting conflicting results. Therefore, this review was conducted to estimate the pooled prevalence of H.pylori infections and associated factors in Ethiopia., Methods: PubMed, Embase, Google scholar, and Ethiopian Universities' repositories were searched following the Preferred Items for Systematic review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guideline. The quality of included studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale in meta-analysis. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using Cochrane Q test and I 2 test statistics based on the random effects model. Comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA 2.0) and Review Manager (RevMan 5.3) were employed to compute the pooled prevalence and summary odds ratios of factors associated with of H.pylori infection., Results: Thirty seven studies with a total of 18,890 participants were eligible and included in the analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of H.pylori infection was 52.2% (95% CI: 45.8-58.6). In the subgroup analysis by region, the highest prevalence was found in Somalia (71%; 95% CI: 32.5-92.6) and the lowest prevalence was reported in Oromia (39.9%; 95% CI: 17.3-67.7). Absence of hand washing after toilet (OR = 1.8, 95% CI; 1.19-2.72), alcohol consumption (OR = 1.34, 95% CI; 1.03-1.74) and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms (OR = 2.23, 95% CI; 1.59-3.14) were associated with H.pylori infection. The trend of H.pylori infection showed a decreasing pattern overtime from 1990 to 2017 in the meta-regression analysis., Conclusion: The prevalence of H.pylori infection remains high; more than half of Ethiopians were infected. Although the trend of infection showed a decreasing pattern; appropriate use of eradication therapy, health education primarily to improve knowledge and awareness on the transmission dynamics of the bacteria, behavioral changes, adequate sanitation, population screening and diagnosis using multiple tests are required to reduce H.pylori infections. Recognizing the bacteria as a priority issue and designing gastric cancer screening policies are also recommended.

Background: Breast milk provides all the energy and nutrients that the infant needs for the first 6 months of life. Suboptimal breastfeeding especially lacks exclusive breastfeeding increase risk of severe acute malnutrition by 3.2-fold and major contributory factor for infant child mortality. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding practice and associated factors among mothers having infants less than 6 months old in Bahir Dar city, Northwest, Ethiopia, 2017., Result: The prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding practice 1 day before the survey was 86.4%. Mothers who; have young infant aged 0-1 month old [AOR = 5.702 (1.747, 18.613)], house wife [AOR = 2.995 (1.557, 5.690)] and are not influenced by culture [AOR = 11 (3.449, 35.165)] were more likely to practice exclusive breastfeeding than their counterparts.

Objective: Directly observed treatment short course has been implemented as part of the national tuberculosis control program in Ethiopia. The strategy, as evidenced by different studies, has improved the survival and treatment success rate of tuberculosis patients. However, some patients failed to complete their treatments and the factors for this failure were not assessed in the study area. We, therefore sought to identify factors associated with poor treatment outcome of tuberculosis in Debre Tabor, northwest Ethiopia., Results: We included 303 patients (173 males, 130 females) with mean age of 34.9 years in the study and 39 (12.9%) patients were with poor treatment outcome over the period of 5 years (2008-2013). Being male, urban residency, positive and unknown smear result at the 2nd month of treatment and patients in the age of 35-44 years were more likely to have poor treatment outcomes than their counterparts. Patients in the new treatment category were less likely to have poor treatment outcome compared to the retreated cases. Further studies are recommended to explore the association of poor treatment outcome with other important factors which are not investigated by this study.

The four countries, Ethiopia, Egypt, Sudan, and Tunisia, face different nutrition challenges and have different experiences and policies in place to combat hunger. Stunting rates among children below 5 years are highest in Ethiopia and Sudan (38%) compared to Sudan and Tunisia (21 and 11-9%). Children below 5 years in Egypt and Tunisia also suffer from higher risks to become overweight and obese; 14-16% are considered overweight. Food security is limited in all countries, especially in Sudan. All four countries have nutrition and/or poverty alleviation policies in place but implementation is challenging or very weak to realize the plan. However, some successes are observed. The authors recommend that to solve the malnutrition problems in the countries: (1) implementation of the respective policies has to be given better attention than writing and approval of it, (2) it is important to consider the country-specific comparative advantage of livestock production, (3) cultivation of nutritious crops for any level of rural and urban population, and (4) and nutrition has to be put on top of the national agenda like food security. Furthermore, both national and international concerning organizations should support these countries to build their capacity in terms of technical skills and technological options., (© 2018 S. Background. Assessing the outcomes of tuberculosis (TB) treatment is an important indicator for evaluation of the effectiveness of tuberculosis control programs. In Ethiopia, directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) was included in the national tuberculosis control program as a strategy but little is known about its effectiveness in the study area. Therefore, this study was aimed at assessing the treatment outcomes of TB patients and associated factors in Debre Tabor, northwest Ethiopia. Methods. A retrospective study was conducted among TB patients for the period from May 2008 to April 2013 at Debre Tabor Health Center, northwest Ethiopia. Data were entered and analyzed using SPSS version 20.0. Descriptive statistics were used to generate frequency tables and figures. Logistic regressions were used to identify factors associated with treatment outcomes at P value ≤ 0.05. Results. Out of 339 patients (197 males and 142 females) registered for antituberculosis treatment in Debre Tabor Health Center, only 303 patients were included in the treatment outcome analysis and 87.1% had successful treatment outcome while 12.9% had unsuccessful treatment outcome. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, the odds of successful treatment outcome were higher among patients ≥45 years of age (AOR = 3.807, 95% CI: 1.155-12.544) and lower among females (AOR = 0.347, 95% CI: 0.132-0.917), rural residents (AOR = 0.342, 95% CI: 0.118-0.986), and negative smear result at the second month of treatment (AOR = 0.056, 95% CI: 0.005-0.577) as compared to their counterparts. Conclusion. The treatment outcome of all forms of tuberculosis patients in Debre Tabor health center was satisfactory as expected from effective implementation of DOTS. Although the observed successful treatment outcome was in agreement with the national target, follow-up of patients during the course of treatment to trace the treatment outcomes of transferred-out patients and assessment of other potential sociodemographic factors that could affect the treatment outcomes of TB patients were also recommended.
