Abstract

@ propósito estético dominante da fotografia moderna foi, como nos sugere El Lissitzky, fincar uma cunha no agora, alargando cada vez mais a distância entre o antes e o depois. Quem se dá ao trabalho de inventariar seus resultados constata a variedade de sentidos, de possibilidades de sentido, para ser exato, que logrou-se assim realizar. Da fenda aberta por esta cunha emergem as formas do instantâneo que vieram a constituir o repertório típico do fotojornalismo (“o que é isso?”, “como isso está?”, “para onde isso vai?” etc.): perguntas às quais uma legenda deve necessariamente responder. Para que o fotógrafo torne visível cada uma destas oportunidades de legenda, uma vez que tenha mergulhado na duração em busca do instantâneo, deve agora retroceder com sua presa e oferecê-la cristalinamente ao público. Um dos limites evidentes da experiência fotográfica moderna foi, então, persistir na duração, sem retroceder, permanecendo indefinidamente no transe do instante. Comparem-se estas fotos carnavalescas de Zeka Araújo (tiradas entre 1987 e 1989, creio) com as imagens de êxtase propostas por Arthur Omar na Antropologia da face gloriosa. A obra de Omar nos fornece o testemunho deste transe, único modo de habitar o interior do instante. O carnaval de Zeka Araújo buscou forçar os limites da fotografia moderna de um outro modo.

Abstract

Abstract Background Air pollution and social characteristics have been shown to affect indicators of health. While use of spatial methods to estimate exposure to air pollution has increased the power to detect effects, questions have been raised about potential for confounding by social factors. Methods A study of singleton births in Eastern Massachusetts was conducted between 1996 and 2002 to examine the association between indicators of traffic, land use, individual and area-based socioeconomic measures (SEM), and birth outcomes (birth weight, small for gestational age and preterm births), in a two-level hierarchical model. Results We found effects of both individual (education, race, prenatal care index) and area-based (median household income) SEM with all birth outcomes. The associations for traffic and land use variables were mainly seen with birth weight, with an exception for an effect of cumulative traffic density on small for gestational age. Race/ethnicity of mother was an important predictor of birth outcomes and a strong confounder for both area-based SEM and indices of physical environment. The effects of traffic and land use differed by level of education and median household income. Conclusion Overall, the findings of the study suggested greater likelihood of reduced birth weight and preterm births among the more socially disadvantaged, and a greater risk of reduced birth weight associated with traffic exposures. Results revealed the importance of controlling simultaneously for SEM and environmental exposures as the way to better understand determinants of health.

Abstract

ABSTRAK PT. Coppal merupakan perusahaan yang bergerak di bidang moulding, jig and fixture, general component dan die casting. PT. Coppal dalam menjalankan aktivitas proses bisnisnya berpotensi menimbulkan berbagai risiko yang berbeda jenis, dampak, dan frekuensinya. Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengidentifikasi risiko dan memberikan usulan strategi mitigasi untuk risiko yang menjadi prioritas dengan menggunakan metode Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) dan House of Risk (HOR) untuk meminimasi dampak yang dapat merugikan perusahaan. Hasil yang diperoleh untuk HOR Fase I proses plan sebanyak 27 risk agent, proses source 24 risk agent, proses make 45 risk agent, proses deliver 21 risk agent, dan proses return 14 risk agent. Sedangkan hasil yang diperoleh untuk HOR Fase II proses plan sebanyak 7 usulan, proses source 10 usulan, proses make 14 usulan, proses deliver 7 usulan, dan proses return 9 usulan. ABSTRACT PT. Coppal is a company engaged in molding, jig and fixture, general component and die casting. PT. Coppal in carrying out its business process activities has the potential to pose various risks of different types, impacts, and frequencies. This research was conducted to identify risks and propose mitigation strategies for priority risks using the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) and House of Risk (HOR) methods to minimize the impact that could harm the company. The results obtained for HOR Phase I are 27 risk agents in the plan process, 24 risk agents source processes, 45 risk agents make processes, 21 risk agents deliver processes, and 14 risk agents return processes. While the results obtained for HOR Phase II are 7 proposed, source process 10 proposed, process make 14 proposed, process deliver 7 proposed, and process return 9 proposed.

21. Examination of Occupational Anxiety Levels and Academic Self-Efficacy of Physical Education Teacher Candidates

Abstract

This study aims at determining the occupational anxiety level of pre-service physical education teachers according to variables, and revealing the correlation between occupational anxiety and academic self-efficacy. Study group consists of 586 pre-service teachers from 10 different universities in Turkey. Data is collected by "Occupational Anxiety Scale for Pre-Service Teachers (OAS)" and "Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (ASES)." T-test and One-Way ANOVA are used for data analysis, and Levene test is conducted for variance equality. Confidence interval is 0.95. For gender variables, the results reveal that women's occupational anxiety is significantly higher than men's in the dimensions of OAS "total occupational anxiety", "socio-economic anxiety" and "school management anxiety" (p<0.05). According to grade levels, there is significant differentiation in the dimension of OAS "total occupational anxiety", "job-oriented anxiety," "socio-economic anxiety," "interaction with students' anxiety," "colleagues and students' parents anxiety" (p<0.05). For variables of participation in socio-cultural and sportive activities and in "socio-economic" dimension, the participants, who never participate in any activities, have significantly higher level of occupational anxiety than those who regularly participate in activities (p<0.05). There is also a negative correlation between OAS and ASES (p<0.01).

Abstract

Background: Exposure to cold spells is associated with mortality. However, little is known about the global mortality burden of cold spells. Methods: A three-stage meta-analytical method was used to estimate the global mortality burden associated with cold spells by means of a time series dataset of 1960 locations across 59 countries (or regions). First, we fitted the location-specific, cold spell-related mortality associations using a quasi-Poisson regression with a distributed lag non-linear model with a lag period of up to 21 days. Second, we built a multivariate meta-regression model between location-specific associations and seven predictors. Finally, we predicted the global grid-specific cold spell-related mortality associations during 2000-19 using the fitted meta-regression model and the yearly grid-specific meta-predictors. We calculated the annual excess deaths, excess death ratio (excess deaths per 1000 deaths), and excess death rate (excess deaths per 100 000 population) due to cold spells for each grid across the world. Findings: Globally, 205 932 (95% empirical CI [eCI] 162 692-250 337) excess deaths, representing 3·81 (95% eCI 2·93-4·71) excess deaths per 1000 deaths (excess death ratio), and 3·03 (2·33-3·75) excess deaths per 100 000 population (excess death rate) were associated with cold spells per year between 2000 and 2019. The annual average global excess death ratio in 2016-19 increased by 0·12 percentage points and the excess death rate in 2016-19 increased by 0·18 percentage points, compared with those in 2000-03. The mortality burden varied geographically. The excess death ratio and rate were highest in Europe, whereas these indicators were lowest in Africa. Temperate climates had higher excess death ratio and rate associated with cold spells than other climate zones. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out what activities of ambidexterity impact start-up companies’ efficiency and business growth in Sweden’s market.Methodology: To understand the research objectives, a qualitative study with 10 in-depth and semi-structured interviews was conducted with startup companies, founders and managers to gain insights.Findings: This study identified two new constructs; environmental dynamism and company nature, that are novel to measure ambidexterity start-up business performance.Research limitations/implications: The focus on Swedish startups limits the transferability. Therefore, future research should be conducted in other countries or in different context settings.Originality/value: This study contributes to the entrepreneurial research proposing proactive and reactive engagement with clients and contributes to strategic leadership theory, identifying that organization such as self-learning and collaboration fosters innovation among employees

33. Genetic characterization of maize (Zea mays L.) landraces grown in Kosovo assessed by MITE-Hbr markers

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine and describe genetic structure on autochthonous maize germplasm (flint types) from different localities in Kosovo using Hbr markers. The genetic characterization of 6-8 individual seedlings per each of 20 landraces was conducted by Hbr display calculated per selective base, the most efficient genetic diversity estimator to distinguish between landraces was primer combination Hbr-Int5-F/MseI+T. The strongest genetic relatedness (r = 55.57) had landrace ACC4 having orange colored seeds, showing the highest genetic uniformity when compared to other accessions. Clustering analysis using the Bayesian approach generated two genetic clusters for observed landraces. As a measure of population structure influenced by genetic drift and migration, Fst values for each genetic cluster were obtained. Higher Fst (0.4027) was calculated within the first genetic group comparing to the second one (0.2001), reflecting a higher levels of out-crossing and conservation between landraces from the first genetic cluster. A similar distribution of genetic linkages was observed from dendrogram, constructed using Dice coefficient and neighbour-joining (NJ) algorithm with minor deviations for landraces ACC6 and ACC28. Genotypes of ACCmk landrace reveal the highest genetic distinction compared to other genotypes, reflecting the highest number of bands (241) and the highest number of private bands (10) as the number of bands unique to a single population, respectively.

42. Public–private partnerships and economic growth: a sectoral analysis from developing countries

Abstract

AbstractGovernments, particularly in developing countries, are continuously faced with the challenge of expanding infrastructure to keep up with population growth and rapid urbanisation. This challenge arises from the fact that public resources are strained as governments face high budget deficits and rising debt-to-GDP ratios. At the same time, development institutions alone have not succeeded in narrowing this financing gap. The constraints placed on the budgetary requirements of governments have shifted attention to public and private partnerships in financing infrastructure projects, which are at the heart of service delivery in developing countries. Whilst the use of Public–Private Partnership (PPPs) is a growing trend in developing countries, there is limited empirical studies that have assessed the impact of PPP investments on economic growth. This article, therefore, extends the limitations in the literature by investigating the effect of PPP sectoral investments on economic growth among 35 developing countries from 1997 to 2018 within the neoclassical growth framework. Using the system GMM estimation technique, we find aggregate PPP investment and energy investment to positively contribute to economic growth, which highlights the multiplier effect of energy in stimulating economic growth in developing economies. The policy implications of the findings are discussed.

Abstract

Background: The mastic tree (formal name: Pistacia lentiscus var. Chia) is extensively cultivated on the southern part of the Greek island of Chios. Its extensive cultivation is due to the production of a special resin, known as mastic gum, or mastiha, which is widely used in several dietary, pharmaceutical and other products since ancient times. Mastic tree is an evergreen, dioecious (consisting of male and female individuals), woody plant. Furthermore, a number of morphological characteristics suggest the existence of several different plant groups, called here “morpho-varieties”, but it is probable that there exist an unknown number of different, deviating genotypes on the island. Nevertheless, five major morphologically determined morpho-varieties of mastic tree are mainly cultivated, namely “Votomos”, “Maroulitis”, “Mavroschinos”, “Stenophyllos” and “Fardyphyllos”. The morpho-varieties exhibit mostly, but not always, distinct morphology, on which their taxonomy was initially based. Since it is observed that different plant populations differ in the quantity and quality of the produced resin, it is important to explore whether these differences have a genetic basis, or are due to other factors, such as agricultural practices, or soil composition. To this end, the genetic diversity among these five morpho-varieties and within each one of them was investigated in the present study, using in a first approximation their Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA profiles and subsequently the sequence divergence of their Internal Transcribed Spacer regions 1 and 2. Results: The results confirm the existence of a considerable genotypic diversity among the five morpho-varieties studied and, furthermore, reveal the existence of genotypic diversity within each one of them, as well as the existence of a number of further deviating genotypes. The possibility, this diversity to be partly a result of reticulate evolution events is also discussed. Conclusions: This study provides evidence that the population of cultivated mastic trees on the island of Chios consists mainly of two species, i.e. Pistacia lentiscus and Pistacia x saportae, although it is clear that there also exist genetically deviating mastic trees, as well as individual plants, probably produced through hybridization between the two afore mentioned species.
