This paper proposes a method to include the anisotropic hysteresis characteristics of soft-magnetic laminated steels in the magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) modeling. The loop-based MEC formulation is improved to handle the nonlinearity of the anisotropic magnetic hysteresis, including the dynamic classical eddy-current and excess fields. The developed MEC model is coupled with both the single-valued B-H curve (SVC) in magnetostatic and the dynamic vector hysteresis model (VHM) in transient analysis. Results with a single elementary MEC element show that an alternating magnetic field in a single direction with a peak value smaller than 300 A/m causes a discrepancy of more than 10% between the magnetic flux densities calculated by the VHM and SVC at 50 and 200 Hz excitation frequencies. Moreover, the proposed modeling technique is verified experimentally using the laminated transformer core of TEAM problem 32. The induced voltage calculated by the MEC model with the VHM demonstrates a good agreement with the measurements, while the MEC model with the SVC calculates inaccurate voltage waveforms. Lastly, the total iron loss dissipated in the transformer's iron core is investigated to verify the proposed technique under different excitation levels and frequencies up to 500 Hz. It is observed that the proposed MEC model with the vector hysteresis characteristics of laminated steels is able to calculate the iron loss accurately, while the conventional single-valued curve method fails to estimate the iron loss.

An analytical approach for performance prediction of saturated brushed permanent magnet direct current (DC) motors is proposed in this paper. In case of a heavy saturation in the stator back core of electrical machines, some flux completes its path through the surrounding air, and the conventional equivalent circuit cannot be used anymore. This issue has not been addressed in the literature. The importance of considering the effect of the flux penetrating the surrounding air is shown in this paper using finite element simulations and experimental results, and an analytical approach is proposed to consider this effect on magnet operating point determination and performance prediction of saturated brushed permanent magnet DC motors. An analytical method is also presented to determine the boundary radius of the surrounding air for obtaining accurate results in finite element (FE) solutions and analytical calculations. An analytical approach based on Carter’s coefficient is also proposed to calculate the effective length of the magnet when the length of the magnet and rotor length are not the same. The accuracy of the proposed analytical model is illustrated using finite element simulations and experimental results. With this accuracy, this analytical model is very suitable to be used for reliable and quick mathematical design optimization.

Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) scaffolds with 3D microporous interconnected architecture and crystallized PBS substructures have been prepared by thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS). Curcumin (CUR) and piperine (PIP) natural drugs were incorporated into the matrices during a one-step fabrication protocol. Alterations in TIPS parameters such as solvent system (1,4 dioxane (DXN) or THF) and cooling condition (intensity and direction of thermal gradient) affected the phase separation process and the scaffold properties. Controlling the crystallization of DXN in a uniaxial direction, resulted in the formation of microtubular scaffolds with oriented porosities. Well-developed PIP crystals and matrix-integrated CUR agglomerates were uniformly distributed throughout the scaffolds. The integration of CUR to the polymer matrix was confirmed by physicochemical evaluations, attributed to a possible interaction with PBS, resulting in a slower release than PIP. The scaffolds with uniaxially-oriented porosities displayed a greater sustained release (only 50–60% after 170 h) due to the restricted drug diffusion through their dense spherulitic pore walls. Due to such structure and smoother well-arranged surfaces, the oriented scaffolds also exhibited greater biocompatibility. Different copolymers incorporating terpene oxide units (e.g., limonene oxide) have been evaluated considering thermal properties, degradability, and biocompatibility. Thus, polycarbonates and polyesters derived from aromatic, monocyclic and bicyclic anhydrides have been considered. Furthermore, ring substitution with myrcene terpene has been evaluated. All polymers were amorphous when evaluated directly from synthesis. However, spherulites could be observed after the slow evaporation of diluted chloroform solutions of polylimonene carbonate, with all isopropene units possessing an R configuration. This feature was surprising considering the reported information that suggested only the racemic polymer was able to crystallize. All polymers were thermally stable and showed a dependence of the maximum degradation rate temperature (from 242 °C to 342 °C) with the type of terpene oxide. The graduation of glass transition temperatures (from 44 °C to 172 °C) was also observed, being higher than those corresponding to the unsubstituted polymers. The chain stiffness of the studied polymers hindered both hydrolytic and enzymatic degradation while a higher rate was detected when an oxidative medium was assayed (e.g., weight losses around 12% after 21 days of exposure). All samples were biocompatible according to the adhesion and proliferation tests performed with fibroblast cells. Hydrophobic and mechanically consistent films (i.e., contact angles between 90° and 110°) were obtained after the evaporation of chloroform from the solutions, having different ratios of the studied biobased polyterpenes and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS). The blend films were comparable in tensile modulus and tensile strength with the pure PBS (e.g., values of 330 MPa and 7 MPa were determined for samples incorporating 30 wt.% of poly(PA-LO), the copolyester derived from limonene oxide and phthalic anhydride. This article presents the magnetostatic analysis of a 12/10 variable flux reluctance machine where the nonlinear magnetic characteristics of the soft-magnetic material are modeled using two different techniques: the single-valued magnetization curve and Jiles-Atherton vector hysteresis modeling. The root mean square and the peak local errors in the magnetic flux density calculated by the single-valued curve are found to be 0.23 T and 0.5 T, respectively. Moreover, the calculated torque under magnetic saturation with a single-valued curve exhibits over 5% error when compared to the Jiles-Atherton model, as it only models uni-directional material characteristics. Lastly, the modeled hysteresis loss of the applied two techniques is compared. The discrepancy between the two models is found to be 25% in magnetic saturation and reaches 48% for large dcto ac-field excitation ratios in the linear region

Single MEC element of NO27 electrical steel is modeled in 2-D under both rotating and alternating magnetic fields to achieve an accurate iron loss estimation for different excitation frequencies. The developed model is coupled with both the single-valued BH curve (SVC) and the hysteresis BH loop (HL) of the non-linear magnetic material. The magnetic flux density is calculated as the output of the model and used for the comparison of both magnetic saturation calculations. The results show that an alternating magnetic field in a single direction with a peak value smaller than 300 A/m causes a discrepancy of more than 10% between HL and SVC, where the knee point of the SVC is located at 200 A/m. Although the SVC approximation gives realistic results under the deep magnetic saturation, it is not capable of estimating the iron loss accurately. The proposed model with the HL calculates the core loss density as 4 and 28 W/kg for 1000 A/m peak value with 50 and 200 Hz alternating magnetic field excitation, respectively.

Aplicat embargament des de la data de defensa fins el 31 de juliol de 2022, TIPS process followed by freeze-dtying was used to prepare blodegradable and biocompatible matrices from poly(3- hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) containing 5 and 12 wt% of 3-hydroxyvalerate (HV) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBS). 1,4 dioxane (DXN) and tetrahydofuran (THF) were used as solvents. The cloud points of the polymer solutions were determíned by turbidimetry method, to predict the locus of binodal curve in the binary phase diagrams. A multidirectional cooling from ~70ºC to 25ºC, and then to -5 ºC or -25 ºC was applied to PHBV solutions in the TIPS process. The effect of the applied thermal gradients and HV molar ratio of PHBV copolymer on phase separation mechanism, morphology and mechanical properties of the scaffolds was studied. Upon high HV contents and fast cooling, the solid-liquid phase separation through crystallization of DXN was the controlling mechanism and generated large pores with well-distinguished walls and great structural continuity. The morphologies ascribed to polymer crystallizatíon, mostly with low structural consistency were further discernible upon slow cooling. An improvement in scaffolds rigidity were observed in low HV and fast cooling conditions, due to the increased polymer crystallinity and the greater structural consistency, respectively. PHBV scaffolds showed a complete biocompatibility towards MDCK and NRK cell adhesion and proliferation. A multidirectional cooling from ~70 ºC to -20 or -74 ºC were applied to PBS-DXN and PBS-THF solutions and a uniaxial cooling from ~70ºC to -74 or -196 ºC to PBS-DXN. 5 and 100 wt% ofcurcumin (CUR) and piperine (PIP) natural drugs were loaded into PBS matrices via a one-step TIPS fabrication/drug loadlng protocot. Utílizing DXN and THF solvents, solid-liquid and liquid-liquid phase separation were respectívely detected as the main mechanisms responsible for creating the porous structures, while the subregions composed of crysta llized PBS were also obse rved . El 1.4 dioxano (DXN) yel tetrahidofurano (THF) fueron los disolventes. En el TIPS para las disoluciones de PHBV se aplicó un enfriamiento multidireccional de 70 a 25ºC y luego a -5 ó -25ºC. Se estudiaron los efectos del gradiente térmico y contenido de HV del copolímero sobre el mecanismo de separación de fases, la morfología y propiedades mecánicas de los scaffolds. La separación de fase sólido-líquido en la cristalización del DXN durante el enfriamiento rápido fue el mecanismo que controla la formación de los scaffolds del copolímero con alto contenido de HV. Los scaffolds mostraron grandes poros con paredes bien formadas y gran integridad estructural. Las morfologías atribuidas a la cristalización del polímero. en su mayoría con poca integridad estructural. fueron obtenidas con el enfriamiento lento. Porous biodegradable scaffolds provide a physical substrate for cells allowing them to attach, proliferate and guide the formation of new tissues. A variety of techniques have been developed to fabricate tissue engineering (TE) scaffolds, among them the most relevant is the thermally-induced phase separation (TIPS). This technique has been widely used in recent years to fabricate three-dimensional (3D) TE scaffolds. Low production cost, simple experimental procedure and easy processability together with the capability to produce highly porous scaffolds with controllable architecture justify the popularity of TIPS. This paper provides a general overview of the TIPS methodology applied for the preparation of 3D porous TE scaffolds. The recent advances in the fabrication of porous scaffolds through this technique, in terms of technology and material selection, have been reviewed. In addition, how properties can be effectively modified to serve as ideal substrates for specific target cells has been specifically addressed. Thermally induced phase separation followed by freeze drying has been used to prepare biodegradable and biocompatible scaffolds with interconnected 3D microporous structures from poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) copolymers containing 5 and 12 wt % of 3-hydroxyvalerate (HV). Solutions of PHBV in 1,4-dioxane, underwent phase separation by cooling under two different thermal gradients (at -25 °C and -5 °C). The cloud point and crystallization temperature of the polymer solutions were determined by turbidimetry and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Parameters affecting the phase separation mechanism such as variation of both the cooling process and the composition of the PHBV copolymer were investigated. Afterwards, the influence of these variables on the morphology of the porous structure and the final mechanical properties (i.e., rigidity and damping) was evaluated via scanning electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, respectively. While the morphology of the scaffolds was considerably affected by polymer crystallization upon a slow cooling rate, the effect of solvent crystallization was more evident at either high hydroxyvalerate content (i.e., 12 wt % of HV) or high cooling rate. The decrease in the HV content gave rise to scaffolds with greater stiffness because of their higher degree of crystallinity, being also noticeable the greater consistency of the structure attained when the cooling rate was higher. A novel Vernier type magnetically geared direct-drive generator for large wind turbines is introduced in this paper. Conventional Vernier-type machines and most of the direct-drive wind turbine generators use excessive amount of permanent magnet, which increases the overall cost and makes the manufacturing process challenging. In this paper, an electrically excited (PM_less) claw-pole type Vernier machine is presented. This new topology has the potential of reducing mass and cost of the generator, and can make the construction easy in manufacturing and handling. Analytical designs are verified using 3D finite-element simulations and several designs are evaluated to find the optimum design for a 7.5 MW, 12 rpm wind turbine application. It is shown, that the required torque can be achieved with an outer diameter of 7.5 m, and with a mass of 172 t (including the structural mass). The proposed generator is compared with commercial direct-drive generators, and it is found that the proposed generator has the highest torque density with 34.7 kNm/t.

Acetaminophen with normal dosage is considered a nontoxic drug for therapeutic applications, but when taken at overdose levels it produces liver damage in human and various animal species. By a high energy mechanically activated method, we produced acetaminophen in a nanometer crystalline size (24 nm). Forty-eight hours after injection of crystalline particles with normal and reduced size of our drug, the effect of liver toxicity was compared by determination of liver transferase enzymes such as alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). These enzymes were examined by routine colorimetric methods using commercial kits and pathologic investigations. Statistical analysis and pathological figures indicated that ALT delivery and toxicity in reduced size acetaminophen was significantly reduced when compared with normal size acetaminophen. Pathology figures exhibited reduced necrosis effects, especially the confluent necrosis, in the central part of the lobule in the reduced size acetaminophen samples when compared with the normal samples.Keywords: acetaminophen, size reduction, pathological and enzymatic investigations, toxicity

In this study, the effect of a γ-pre-irradiation dose of radiation (radiation absorbed dosages of 10, 20, 30, 40 KGy) under appropriate temperature and grafting conditions was investigated. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed the existence of the graft poly-N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAAm) on the substrate. The optimal value of the dose for grafting was 40 KGy at 50°C. The scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) images clearly showed that increasing the absorbed dose of radiation would increase the amount of grafting. Surface topography and graft thickness in AFM images of the radiated samples showed that the PNIPAAm at the absorbed dose of radiation was properly grafted. The thickness of these grafts was about 50–100 nm. The drop water contact angles of the best grafted sample at 37°C and 10°C were 55.3 ± 1.2° and 61.2 ± 0.9° resp

The ICP analysis demonstrated the presence of tungsten carbide particle impurities after activation from the powder sample impacting with the ball and jar.
