Background Cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and insulin resistance demonstrate elements of functional impairment of the endothelium. Treatment of endothelial dysfunction with natural products, such as pomegranate, can open new ways in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Purpose The present meta-analysis provides information in highlighting the role of pomegranate in endothelial dysfunction. Methods Various databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane, and Google Scholar, were searched up to July 2020 using relevant keywords. We have selected the studies that investigated the effects of pomegranate on vascular adhesion factors, including intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1), E-selectin, and interleukin-6 (IL-6). MD with 95% CrI with 100,000 iterations by using Markov chain Monte Carlo code were used. Results Pooled effect size of articles in human studies indicated that pomegranate juice was not significantly effective on ICAM-1 [MD: −0.42; CrI: (−1.01, 0.17)], VCAM-1 [MD: −0.20; CrI: (−1.95, 1.40)], and E-selectin [MD: −0.21; CrI: (−1.62, 1.21)] compared to the control group. But it can significantly reduce IL-6 [MD: −1.07; CrI: (−1.90, -0.19)]. Conclusion Generally, present study showed that pomegranate juice has no significant effect on vascular adhesion factors, ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin, but can reduce IL-6 significantly. Future prospective randomized clinical trials with longer intervention duration are warranted to obtain a precise conclusion.

Glycoproteins are organic compounds formed from proteins and carbohydrates, which are found in many parts of the living systems including the cell membranes. Furthermore, impaired metabolism of glycoprotein components plays the main role in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of glycoprotein levels in the treatment of diabetes mellitus.All relevant papers in the English language were compiled by searching electronic databases, including Scopus, PubMed and Cochrane library. The keywords of glycoprotein, diabetes mellitus, glycan, glycosylation, and inhibitor were searched until January 2019.Glycoproteins are pivotal elements in the regulation of cell proliferation, growth, maturation and signaling pathways. Moreover, they are involved in drug binding, drug transportation, efflux of chemicals and stability of therapeutic proteins. These functions, structure, composition, linkages, biosynthesis, significance and biological effects are discussed as related to their use as a therapeutic strategy for the treatment of diabetes mellitus and its complications.The findings revealed several chemical and natural compounds have significant beneficial effects on glycoprotein metabolism. The comprehension of glycoprotein structure and functions are very essential and inevitable to enhance the knowledge of glycoengineering for glycoprotein-based therapeutics as may be required for the treatment of diabetes mellitus and its associated complications. Cardiovascular disease is an important cause for morbidity and mortality worldwide. Flavonoids, such as naringin, and naringenin are important natural phytochemicals in the treatment or prevention of various disorders such as obesity, cardiac diseases, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Naringin and naringenin have significant therapeutic potential in several diseases through anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic actions; these flavonoids play a protective role in human pathophysiology. In this review, based on the latest evidence, we present a summary of the impact of naringin, and naringenin on cardiovascular disease, and analyze and discuss the basic roles of naringin and naringenin and their mechanisms of actions in cardiovascular disease and other vascular dysfunction. The data collected in this review may serve as a comprehensive reference for the effects of naringin, and naringenin in cardiovascular disease, which may be beneficial for further research and for the design of naringin and naringenin analogs as new therapeutic options for cardiovascular diseases.
