Abstract

In this paper, we discuss the global behavior of all solutions of the difference equation Xn+1 = XnXn-1 axn + bxn-1, n € N0, where a; b are real numbers and the initial conditions X-1, X0 are real numbers. We determine the forbidden set and give an explicit formula for the solutions. We show the existence of periodic solutions, under certain conditions.

Abstract

Nanofibers isolated from unbleached neutral sulfite rice straw pulp were used to prepare transparent films without the need to modify the isolated rice straw nanofibers (RSNF). RSNF with loading from 1.25 to 10 wt.% were mixed with cellulose acetate (CA) solution in acetone and films were formed by casting. The films were characterized regarding their transparency and light transmittance, microstructure, mechanical properties, crystallinity, water contact angle, porosity, water vapor permeability, and thermal properties. The results showed good dispersion of RSNF in CA matrix and films with good transparency and homogeneity could be prepared at RSNF loadings of less than 5%. As shown from contact angle and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements, the RSNF resulted in increased hydrophilic nature and roughness of the films. No significant improvement in tensile strength and Young’s modulus was recorded as a result of adding RSNF to CA. Addition of the RSNF did not significantly affect the porosity, crystallinity and melting temperature of CA, but slightly increased its glass transition temperature.

Abstract

Metallo-terpyridine compounds and polymers exhibit unique optical, electrical, magnetic and antimicrobial properties. Recently, metallo-terpyridine-modified cellulosic films with interesting porous structure, that exhibit these properties, have been prepared. Herein we report the use of Cu-terpyridine-modified oxidized cellulose nanofibers (OXCNF-Cu-Tpy) as membranes for treatment of effluents of paper mills to produce re-usable water. The OXCNF-Cu-Tpy was prepared by modification of TEMPO-oxidized CNF (OXCNF) using copper(II) complex of 4′-Chloro [2,2′:6′,2″] terpyridine. The modification was proven by elemental analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The prepared OXCNF-Cu-Tpy was also characterized using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The prepared membranes were evaluated regarding their microscopic structure using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, contact angle measurement, water flux and rejection of sub-micron size suspended particles in papermaking wastewater effluent. Chemical modification of OXCNF with the Cu-Tpy groups significantly increased pure water flux of the membranes by about 52 and 194% depending on pressure used during filtration (0.5 and 1 MPa, respectively). Although both OXCNF and OXCNF-Cu-Tpy exhibited high efficiency in removing the sub-micron size suspended particles from wastewater effluent, OXCNF-Cu-Tpy membranes showed about 30% higher flux rate than OXCNF membranes.

27. Global behavior of a rational second order difference equation.

Abstract

In this paper, we solve the difference equation x n + 1 = α 1 - x n x n - 1 , n = 0 , 1 , ... , where α > 0 and the initial values x - 1 , x 0 are real numbers. We find invariant sets and discuss the global behavior of the solutions of that equation. We show that when α < 2 3 3 , one of the positive equilibrium points attracts all orbits with initials outside a set of Lebesgue measure zero. Also, when α = 2 3 3 , the unique positive equilibrium points attracts all orbits with initials outside a set of Lebesgue measure zero. Finally, we show that when α > 2 3 3 , under certain conditions there exist solutions that are either periodic or converging to periodic solutions and give some examples. Abstract

Different bio-polymeric matrixes of carrageenan and modified carrageenan with cellulosic nonmaterials were prepared in the form of beads. The nanocellulosic materials were prepared from dissolved bagasse pulp and include cellulose nanocrystals, cellulose nanofibers and tricarboxy cellulose nanofibers. The prepared bio-polymeric matrixes were characterized with transmission electron microscopy, FTIR, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. The capabilities of carrageenan and modified carrageenan beads to chelate with several metal cations were evaluated. Interestingly, the modification of carrageenan with cellulose nanoparticles obtained high efficiency toward removing Cu2+, Pb2+, Ca2+, Mg2+, and Fe2+. The modified carrageenan with tricarboxy cellulose nanofibers which has higher carboxylate content showed high removal efficiency rather than the other modifications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The most common form of crystalline silica found in rice straw is quartz. On the other hand, cristobalite considered as one form of crystalline silica. Mullite (3Al2O3·2SiO2) is a well-known, stable compound in the alumina-silica system. Due to its structural advantage, it is the most desirable phase in alumina ceramics. The mineral cristobalite (silicon dioxide) is a high-temperature polymorph of silica, but a distinct crystal structure. The purpose of the present study was the preparation of nanofibrillated cellulose aerogel fibers (NFCA) from bagasse pulp as a template for in situ preparation of cristobalite/mullite nanorods. This study analyzes the use of biomass combustion ash waste as secondary raw materials in the fabrication of ceramic fibers. High-quality silica nanoparticles (SNPs) can be won from rice straw as one of agricultural waste. Rice husk (RH) was used as a possible starting material in order to extract silica via an environmentally friendly technique. The extracted amorphous silica was reprocessed in order to synthesize nanocrystalline cristobalite/mullite nanorods and/or fibers. Samples were determined by XRD, EDX, SEM, and TEM. The energy dispersive X-ray spectrum (EDX), depicts the Al, O, Si, and Na peaks. Contrary, the X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern conceals the diffraction peaks of both the cristobalite and the mullite. TEM exposed the mullite inside the alumina grains. The obtained composite of nanofibers are composed mullite and cristobalite nanocrystals. The composite fibers exhibited a coarse surface, due to the precipitation of mullite and cristobalite nanocrystals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

43. Relationship between alpha adrenoceptor occupancy and response for the alpha-1 adrenoceptor agonist, cirazoline, and the alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist, B-HT 933, in canine saphenous vein.

Abstract

The relationship between alpha adrenoceptor occupancy and response was investigated for the alpha-1 adrenoceptor agonist, cirazoline, and the alpha-2 adrenoceptor agonist, B-HT 933, in canine saphenous vein, a tissue known to contain both alpha adrenoceptor subtypes. Both cirazoline and B-HT 933 produced dose-dependent vasoconstrictor responses in canine saphenous vein, with the maximum vasoconstrictor response elicited by B-HT 933 being only 75% of that produced by cirazoline. Dissociation constants were obtained for cirazoline (0.61 microM) and B-HT 933 (4.99 microM) for interaction with postsynaptic vascular alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenoceptors, respectively, by the method of fractional irreversible receptor inactivation using phenoxybenzamine. Based on this information, alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenoceptor occupancy-response relationships were constructed. The alpha-1 adrenoceptor occupancy-response relationship obtained for cirazoline was approximately 4-fold more favorable than the alpha-2 adrenoceptor occupancy-response relationship for B-HT 933, although both agonists were associated with a significant receptor reserve. The alpha-1 adrenoceptor occupancy-response relationship of cirazoline and the alpha-2 adrenoceptor occupancy-response relationship of B-HT 933 were both rectangular hyperbolas, suggesting that both compounds have high intrinsic efficacy at their respective alpha adrenoceptor subtypes. The results indicate that a receptor reserve exists for the alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenoceptor-mediated effects of cirazoline and B-HT 933, respectively, and that the alpha adrenoceptor reserve may be significantly larger for postsynaptic vascular alpha-1 adrenoceptors than for postsynaptic vascular alpha-2 adrenoceptors in canine saphenous vein.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract

A series of 4-alkyoxybenzoyloxypropyl cellulose (ABPC-n) samples was synthesized via the esterification of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) with 4-alkoxybenzoic acid bearing different numbers of carbon atoms. The molecular structure of the ABPC-n was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The liquid crystalline (LC) phases and transitions behaviors were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light microscopy (PLM), and refractometry. It was found that the glass transition (T-g) and clearing (T-c) temperatures decrease with increase of the alkoxy chain length. It was observed that the derivatives with an odd number of carbon atoms are non-mesomorphic. This series of ABPC-n polymers exhibit characteristic features of cholesteric LC phases between their glass transition and isotropization temperatures.
