White-light emission in donor-acceptor systems usually requires relatively high acceptor content and/or multiple acceptors to "neutralize" the primary color of donors. Herein, a cyanostilbene-bridged ditopic ureidopyrimidinone donor (CSU) was designed and synthesized, which can self-assemble into dispersed nanoparticles in water. Fascinatingly, efficient white-light emission can be realized by co-assembling 0.1% DBT into the nanoparticles through a light-harvesting strategy. This new system is further demonstrated for use in white-light encryption materials.

Addressing the mechanical mismatch between biological tissue and traditional electronic materials remains a major challenge in bioelectronics. While rigidity of such materials limits biocompatibility, supramolecular polymer networks can harmoniously interface with biological tissues as they are soft, wet, and stretchable. Peptide dimerization is ubiquitous in natural protein conjugates and artificial self-assemblies. A major challenge in artificial systems remains achieving quantitative heterodimerization of peptides, critical for next-generation biomolecular purification and formulation of therapeutics. Here, we employ a synthetic host to simultaneously encapsulate an aromatic peptide and a non-canonical L-perfluorophenylalanine-containing peptide through embedded polar-π interactions, thus constructing an unprecedented series of heteropeptide dimers. To demonstrate the utility, this heteropeptide dimerization strategy was applied to achieve on-resin recognition of N-terminal aromatic residues in peptides as well as insulin, both exhibiting high recycling efficiency (> 95%). This research unveils a generic approach to exploit quantitative heteropeptide dimers for the design of supramolecular (bio)systems.

This letter is aimed to develop a general strategy to fabricate polypseudorotaxanes with controlled antibacterial activity based on cationic polymers. As a proof of concept, the commercially available antibacterial cationic polymer, e-poly-l-lysine hydrochloride, was chosen for the demonstration. Using host–guest chemistry, cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]), a water-soluble macrocyclic host, was employed to bind with the positive charge and hydrophobic component on e-poly-l-lysine hydrochlorides for antibacterial regulation. In this way, by tuning the ratio of CB[7] to the cationic polymer, the antibacterial polypseudorotaxane can be obtained, and the antibacterial efficiency can be well tuned from 5% to 100%. This line of research will enrich the field of cationic polymers and polypseudorotaxanes with important functions on precise control over antibacterial activity.

In this letter, we report a new method of controllable supramolecular polymerization, taking advantage of host-enhanced photodimerization. The low-molecular-weight supramolecular oligomers were formed by noncovalent complexation between cucurbit[8]urils (CB[8]) and the bifunctional monomers (DBN) with Brooker’s merocyanine moiety (MOED) on either end. Interestingly, when irradiated with UV light, the supramolecular oligomers could transform into supramolecular polymers with high molecular weight. The molecular weight of supramolecular polymers could be controlled by varying the irradiation time. It is highly anticipated that this work can enrich the methods on the modulation of supramolecular polymerization.

The challenge of quantitatively forming self‐assembled heterodimers without other equilibrium by‐products is overcome through self‐sorting favored by the introduction of designed shape‐complementary moieties. Such a supramolecular strategy based on cucurbit[8]uril‐directed dimerization is further applied to generate hetero‐chromophore dimers quantitatively, leading to efficient energy transfer (>85 %) upon photoexcitation., Quantitative generation of hetero‐chromophore dimers is realized through cucurbit[8]uril‐directed self‐sorting, favored by the introduction of designed, shape‐complementary moieties. This process results in discrete heterodimeric stacking through supramolecular confinement, enabling efficient interchromophoric energy transfer upon photoexcitation.

Phenyl-perfluorophenyl polar−π interactions have been revisited for the design and fabrication of functional supramolecular systems. The relatively weak associative interactions (ΔG ≈ −1.0 kcal/mol) have limited their use in aqueous self-assembly to date. Herein, we propose a strategy to strengthen phenyl-perfluorophenyl polar−π interactions by encapsulation within a synthetic host, thus increasing the binding affinity to ΔG= −15.5 kcal/mol upon formation of heteroternary complexes through social self-sorting. These heteroternary complexes were used as dynamic, yet strong, cross-linkers in the fabrication of supramolecular gels, which exhibited excellent viscoelasticity, stretchability, self-recovery, self-healing, and energy dissipation. This work unveils a general approach to exploit host-enhanced polar−π interactions in the design of robust aqueous supramolecular systems.

Extended polymeric structures based on redox-active species are of great interest in emerging technologies related to energy conversion and storage. However, redox-active monomers tend to inhibit radical polymerisation processes and hence, increase polydispersity and reduce the average molecular weight of the resultant polymers. Here, we demonstrate that styrenic viologens, which do not undergo radical polymerisation effectively on their own, can be readily copolymerised in the presence of cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n]) macrocycles. The presented strategy relies on pre-encapsulation of the viologen monomers within the molecular cavities of the CB[n] macrocycle. Upon polymerisation, the molecular weight of the resultant polymer was found to be an order of magnitude higher and the polydispersity reduced 5-fold. The mechanism responsible for this enhancement was unveiled through comprehensive spectroscopic and electrochemical studies. A combination of solubilisation/stabilisation of reduced viologen species as well as protection of the parent viologens against reduction gives rise to the higher molar masses and reduced polydispersities. Supramolecular polymer networks are non-covalently crosslinked soft materials that exhibit unique mechanical features such as self-healing, high toughness and stretchability. Previous studies have focused on optimizing such properties using fast-dissociative crosslinks (that is, for an aqueous system, dissociation rate constant kd > 10 s-1). Herein, we describe non-covalent crosslinkers with slow, tuneable dissociation kinetics (kd < 1 s-1) that enable high compressibility to supramolecular polymer networks. The resultant glass-like supramolecular networks have compressive strengths up to 100 MPa with no fracture, even when compressed at 93% strain over 12 cycles of compression and relaxation. Notably, these networks show a fast, room-temperature self-recovery (< 120 s), which may be useful for the design of high-performance soft materials. Retarding the dissociation kinetics of non-covalent crosslinks through structural control enables access of such glass-like supramolecular materials, holding substantial promise in applications including soft robotics, tissue engineering and wearable bioelectronics., CDT

One halide ion (X- ) can bind on the surface of nanoscale Anderson-type polyoxometalate (POMs) clusters [(n-C4 H9 )4 N]3 {AlMo6 O18 (OH)3 [(OCH2 )3 CCH3 ]}, and form stable complexes in solution with binding constant K=1.53×103 . Single-crystal structural analysis showed that this binding behavior occurs through multiple hydrogen bonding between X- and three hydroxy groups on the uncapped side of the cluster. This supramolecular interaction in the cluster systems means that their catalytic activities, evaluated from the oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes, can be switched upon the introduction of halide ions and water molecules. The halide ions work as inhibitors by blocking the active sites of the clusters while they can be re-activated by the addition of water.

Colloidal photocatalysts can utilize solar light for the conversion of CO2 to carbon-based fuels, but controlling the product selectivity for CO2 reduction remains challenging, in particular in aqueous solution. Here, we present an organic surface modification strategy to tune the product selectivity of colloidal ZnSe quantum dots (QDs) towards photocatalytic CO2 reduction even in the absence of transition metal co-catalysts. Besides H2, imidazolium-modified ZnSe QDs evolve up to 2.4 mmolCO gZnSe−1 (TONQD > 370) after 10 h of visible light irradiation (AM 1.5G, λ > 400 nm) in aqueous ascorbate solution with a CO-selectivity of up to 20%. This represents a four-fold increase in CO-formation yield and 13-fold increase in CO-selectivity compared to non-functionalized ZnSe QDs. The binding of the thiolated imidazolium ligand to the QD surface is characterized quantitatively using 1H-NMR spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry, revealing that a subset of 12 to 17 ligands interacts strongly with the QDs. Transient absorption spectroscopy reveals an influence of the ligand on the intrinsic charge carrier dynamics through passivating Zn surface sites. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the imidazolium capping ligand plays a key role in stabilizing the surface-bound *CO2− intermediate, increasing the yield and selectivity toward CO production. Overall, this work unveils a powerful tool of using organic capping ligands to modify the chemical environment on colloids, thus enabling control over the product selectivity within photocatalyzed CO2 reduction., A photocatalyst system consisting of ZnSe quantum dots modified with a thiolated imidazolium capping ligand for visible light-driven reduction of aqueous CO2 to CO is reported without the need for a metal complex co-catalyst.

We introduce a new facile synthetic methodology for the preparation of alkyl pyridinium-containing acrylamide monomers. Inclusion complexes of these new monomers with CB[8] facilitate supramolecular crosslinking in a series of hydrogels formed through in situ polymerisation. The resulting hydrogels not only show greatly enhanced mechanical properties over a purely acrylamide-based gel, but also by selecting fluorescent pyridine moieties, the materials are endowed with the fluorescence properties desirable for several sensing applications.

A new method of supramolecular emulsion interfacial polymerization is developed, which can be used to fabricate supramolecular polymeric nanospheres. We designed a water-soluble monomer containing two maleimide end groups, acting as both building block and surfactant, and an oil-soluble supramonomer bearing two thiol groups connected by quadruple hydrogen bonds. With the assist of ultrasonication, hollow nanospheres can be controllably prepared by thiol-maleimide reaction of two monomers at the emulsion interface, which exhibit good stability and dynamic property. In addition, the encapsulated guest molecules could be controllably released from the supramolecular polymeric nanospheres, owing to their stimuli-responsiveness. It is anticipated that this approach will enrich the methodology of supramolecular polymerization and can be applied to constructing supramolecular materials with controllable structures and functions.

A charge-reversal amphiphile exhibiting charge conversion from negative to positive induced by pH is reported. It selectively kills cancer cells through cell membrane disruption. This amphiphile comprising an alkyl chain and anionic headgroup of acid-labile β-carboxylic amide (C16N-DCA) was prepared. In the microenvironment of normal cells with pH 7.4, the negatively charged C16N-DCA exhibited considerably reduced cytotoxicity. However, in the acidic microenvironment of cancer cells with pH 6.5-6.8, the headgroup charge of C16N-DCA changed from negative to positive under hydrolysis of the acid-labile amide group. As a result, the generated cationic amphiphile displayed significant killing of cancer cells by disrupting their cell membranes. Such pH-selective cell killing bioactivity represents a new route of chemotherapy for anticancer strategies.

We have fabricated a series of supramolecular polymers with tailor-made structures and properties through supramolecular interfacial polymerization of miscible monomers. Compared with homogeneous solution polymerization, supramolecular interfacial polymerization is advantageous for fabricating supramolecular polymers with higher molecular weights. Their higher molecular weights are attributed to the higher effective concentration of monomers at the interface than in solutions and diffusion-limited characteristic of supramolecular interfacial polymerization. Moreover, the glass transition temperatures of supramolecular polymers are well tuned by tuning the monomer structures and supramolecular interfacial copolymerization. It is anticipated that this research will further enrich the methodology for fabricating supramolecular polymers with controlled structures and properties through supramolecular interfacial polymerization.

We have successfully demonstrated that the host-guest complex of carboxylated pillar[6]arene with oxaliplatin (OxPt) exhibits low cytotoxicity toward normal cells and displays higher anticancer bioactivity against colorectal cancer cells than OxPt itself. Owing to higher binding affinity of carboxylated pillar[6]arene with spermine (SPM) than that with OxPt, the encapsulated OxPt can be thoroughly released from its host-guest complex by the competitive replacement with SPM. This supramolecular chemotherapy works well both in vitro and in vivo for SPM-overexpressed cancers, such as colorectal cancer. Compared to OxPt itself, the anticancer bioactivity of this host-guest complex is further improved by about 20%. Such an improvement results from the combined effect of controlled release of OxPt from its host-guest complex and simultaneous consumption of SPM by carboxylated pillar[6]arene. It is anticipated that this supramolecular strategy may be extended to other clinical anticancer drugs for decreasing their severe side effects and improving their anticancer bioactivity, thus enriching the realm of supramolecular chemotherapy.

A method of controllable supramolecular polymerization through kinetic trapping is developed. To this end, two bifunctional monomers with cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) and adamantane end groups were synthesized. The CB[7]-containing monomer was presaturated with a pH-responsive competitive guest for kinetic control. Then, the kinetics of supramolecular polymerization of the two monomers was easily controlled through the modulation of pH. As a result, supramolecular polymerization was kinetically trapped at certain stages, and supramolecular polymers with different molecular weights were obtained. It is anticipated that this research will enrich the methods of controllable supramolecular polymerization.

Antimicrobial cationic polymers mainly contain two functional components: the cationic groups and the hydrophobic groups. The antimicrobial activity is influenced by the type, amount, location and distribution of these two components. This review summarizes the designs and syntheses of antimicrobial cationic polymers by controlling the above two factors. It involves the structural designs from primary to secondary structures, from covalent to noncovalent syntheses and from bulk to surface. Furthermore, it will discuss how to advance structural designs toward functional controls for optimizing the antimicrobial performances and biocompatibility of antimicrobial cationic polymers. It is anticipated that this review will provide some guidelines for developing molecular engineering of antimicrobial cationic polymers with tailor-made structures and functions. A redox-responsive hybrid of polyoxometalate and conducting oligomer including its self-assemblies with controllable morphologies are reported. To this end, a hybrid molecule, containing a Lindqvist hexamolybdate as the polar head group and N,N'-bis(4'-amino-2,6-dimethylphenyl)-1,4-quinonediimine as the redox-responsive and aggregating group, is prepared. This hybrid exhibits redox-responsive behavior with controllable assembling morphological transition from spherical vesicles to short cylindrical vesicles. Besides, the hybrid-based self-assemblies are transferred to the surface, thus the surface wettability can be well-tuned owing to the morphological transitions of the self-assemblies. By marrying conducting materials with polyoxometalate chemistry, this research opens a new horizon of polyoxometalate-based self-assembled systems with potential applications in functional materials.

Infections caused by drug-resistant pathogens have posed a series of public health crises across the world. To address this challenging issue, development of new antibiotics is one of the most effective methods, however it always lags behind the spreading of antibiotic resistance unfortunately. In this work we illustrate an innovative supramolecular strategy to design germicide switch for decelerating the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. The germicide switches are built up between commercial germicides and cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) through host-guest interactions, and their bactericidal activity is switched “off” and “on” reversibly by assembly and dis-assembly processes of germicide/CB[7] complex. Structure-property relation exhibits that the interaction between active sites of germicides and CB[7] plays a decisive role in the antimicrobial activity of these germicide switches. By turning antibacterial activity “on” when needed and turning it “off” when not needed, the germicide switch will not continue to produce pressure on bacteria, thus decelerating the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria. This work offers a proof-of-concept approach to efficiently prevent the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria by controllable and reversible release and concealment of active sites of germicides by supramolecular strategy.

Herein, a new method of supramolecular polymerization at the water-oil interface is developed. As a demonstration, an oil-soluble supramonomer containing two thiol end groups linked by two ureidopyrimidinone units and a water-soluble monomer bearing two maleimide end groups are employed in this research. Supramolecular interfacial polymerization can be implemented by a thiol-maleimide click reaction at the water-chloroform interface to obtain supramolecular polymeric films. In addition, the glass transition temperature of such supramolecular polymers can be well tuned by simply changing the polymerization time and temperature. It is highly anticipated that this line of research will provide a facile and general approach to realize control over supramolecular polymerization by transferring the preparation of supramolecular polymers from solutions to water-oil interfaces and construct supramolecular materials with well-defined properties.

Supramolecular chemotherapy is aimed to employ supramolecular approach for regulating the cytotoxicity and improving the efficiency of antitumor drugs. In this paper, we demonstrated a new example of supramolecular chemotherapy by utilizing the clinical antitumor drug, oxaliplatin, which is the specific drug for colorectal cancer treatment. Cytotoxicity of oxaliplatin to the colorectal normal cell could be significantly decreased by host-guest complexation between oxaliplatin and cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]). More importantly, oxaliplatin-CB[7] exhibited cooperatively enhanced antitumor activity than oxaliplatin itself. On the one hand, the antitumor activity of oxaliplatin can reappear by competitive replacement of spermine from oxaliplatin-CB[7]; on the other hand, CB[7] can consume the overexpressed spermine in tumor environments, which is essential for tumor cell growth. These two events can lead to the cooperatively enhanced antitumor performance. Supramolecular chemotherapy can be applied to treat with spermine-overexpressed tumors. It is highly anticipated that this strategy may be employed in many other clinical antitumor drugs, which opens a new horizon of supramolecular chemotherapy for potential applications in clinical antitumor treatments.

Supramolecular catalysis aims to modulate chemical reactions on both selectivity and rate by taking advantage of supramolecular chemistry. However, due to the effect of product inhibition, supramolecular catalysts are usually added in stoichiometric amounts. Herein, we report a supramolecular catalysis system in which 1% of the supramolecular catalyst, cucurbit[8]uril, is able to significantly accelerate the photodimerization of Brooker’s merocyanine. This catalytic process is realized in a cyclic manner because the photodimerized product can be spontaneously replaced by monomeric reactants via competitive host–guest complexation. Thus, a catalytic amount of cucurbit[8]uril is sufficient to accomplish photodimerization within 10 min. This line of research will enrich the field of supramolecular catalysis and allow the development of more efficient catalytic systems.

This work is aimed at providing a supramolecular strategy for tuning the cytotoxicity in chemotherapy. To this end, as a proof of concept, we employed dynamic cucurbit[7]uril(CB[7])-mediated host-guest interaction to control the loading and releasing of dimethyl viologen (MV) as a model antitumor agent. MV has high cytotoxicity to both normal cells and tumor cells without specificity. By encapsulating MV into the hydrophobic cavity of CB[7], the cytotoxicity of MV to normal cells can be significantly decreased. When the host-guest complex of MV-CB[7] is added into tumor cells with overexpressed spermine, the antitumor activity of MV can be recovered in tumor cell environment. There are two reasons behind this effect: on the one hand, spermine has a high affinity to CB[7], leading to releasing of MV from MV-CB[7]; on the other hand, CB[7] can soak up spermine, which is essential for tumor cell growth, therefore decreasing the cell viability furthermore. Then, it is highly anticipated that this kind of supramolecular strategy could apply to clinical antitumor agents and provide a new approach for decreasing the cytotoxicity and increasing the antitumor activity, thus opening horizons of supramolecular chemotherapy.

Rational control of the cooperativity of multiple noncovalent interactions often plays an important role in the design and construction of supramolecular self-assemblies and materials, especially in precision supramolecular engineering. However, it still remains a challenge to control the cooperativity of multiple noncovalent interactions through tuning the hydrophobic effect. In this work, we demonstrate that the binding cooperativity of cucurbit[8]uril(CB[8])-mediated homoternary complexes is strongly influenced by the amphiphilicity of guest molecule side groups on account of an interplay between both classical (entropy-driven) and nonclassical (enthalpy-driven) hydrophobic effects. To this end, we rationally designed and prepared a series of guest molecules bearing a benzyl group as the CB[8] homoternary binding motif with various hydrophilic and hydrophobic side groups for cooperative control. By gradually tuning side groups of the guest molecules from hydrophilic to hydrophobic, we are able to control the binding from positive to negative cooperativity. An advanced molecular recognition process and self-assembling system can be developed by adjusting the positive and negative cooperativity. The ability to regulate and control the binding cooperativity will enrich the field of supramolecular chemistry, and employing cooperativity-controlled multiple noncovalent interactions in precision supramolecular engineering is highly anticipated.

Herein, we propose a new method for promoting covalent polymerization by supramolecular catalysts. To this end, we employed cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) as a supramolecular catalyst, and successfully prepared polyelectrolytes in an aqueous solution by taking advantage of the CB[8]-enhanced photodimerization of Brooker merocyanine moieties. Interestingly, 10 mol % CB[8] is enough to effectively catalyze this polymerization, because CB[8] can be spontaneously replaced by terminal groups from photodimerized products. In addition, the molecular weights of the obtained polyelectrolytes can be varied by the irradiation time or the monomer. By combining supramolecular catalysis and polymer chemistry, this line of research may enrich the methodology of polymerization and open up new horizons for supramolecular polymer chemistry.

Self-sorting is one of the effective strategies to realize control over supramolecular polymerization. In this work, we designed a bifunctional monomer (Np-Cn-Np) bearing an alkyl chain (Cn) and two naphthalene moieties (Np). By mixing the monomer with two kinds of host molecules, the selective recognition between Np and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) can link up the monomer, and the complexation between Cn and cucurbit[7]uril (CB[7]) can construct a rigid linker to promote and control the linear supramolecular polymerization. The self-sorting process was confirmed by 1H NMR and isothermal titration calorimetry. As indicated by analytical ultracentrifugation, the molecular weight of supramolecular polymers can be well tuned from 10 kDa to 50 kDa by tuning the molar ratio of CB[7] to Np-C6-Np. Adjustment of the length of the alkyl chain can influence the degree of polymerization, which was studied through isothermal titration calorimetry and diffusion-ordered NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the kinetics of the supramolecular polymerizations were studied by stopped flow. This line of research will extend the self-sorting strategy to achieve controllable supramolecular polymerization and enrich the field of supramolecular polymers.

We report a new method for fabricating supramolecular polymers with controlled structure and molecular weight through reversible conformational modulation. To this end, the crown-ether-based “taco complex” was introduced. We prepared a monomer containing a bis(m-phenylene)-32-crown-10 in the core, which can supramolecularly polymerize efficiently in solution. When the conformation of the crown ether core was folded into a taco complex, the linear supramolecular polymerization could be significantly depressed, thus decreasing the molecular weight of the supramolecular polymer. In addition, extracting the depolymerizing agent with aqueous solution of cucurbit[7]uril could disassociate the taco complex and regenerate the supramolecular polymer with molecular weight as high as before. It is anticipated that this study can provide a facile and general methodology for controllable supramolecular polymerization.

This communication describes the fabrication of diselenide-containing supramolecular polymers. The diselenide-containing supramolecular polymers were fabricated by equimolarly mixing (FGGC11Se)2 and CB[8] in aqueous solution driven by host–guest interactions between cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) and Phe-Gly-Gly. The amphiphilic diselenide-containing supramolecular polymers could further form aggregates for loading hydrophobic small molecules such as Nile Red and releasing them upon addition of oxidants or reductants. This line of research not only expands the library of selenium-containing polymers, but also offers a new strategy to develop functional supramolecular polymers for drug delivery.

Supramolecular polymers have attracted lots of interests in the scientific community; however, developing controllable methods of supramolecular polymerization remains a big challenge. This article reviews some recent developments of methods for supramolecular polymerization from controllable fabrication to living polymerization. Three facile methods with general applicability for controllable fabrication of supramolecular polymers have been established recently: the first method is a self-sorting approach by manipulating ring–chain equilibrium based on noncovalent control over rigidity of monomers; the second is the covalent polymerization from supramonomers formed by noncovalent interactions; and the third is supramolecular interfacial polymerization. More excitingly, living supramolecular polymerization has been achieved by two elegant strategies, including seeded supramolecular polymerization under pathway complexity control and chain-growth supramolecular polymerization by metastable monomers. It is anticipated that this review may provide some guidance for precise fabrication of supramolecular polymers, leading to the construction of supramolecular polymeric materials with controllable architectures and functions.

We describe a new strategy to control the reactivity of SeSe bond by using supramolecular chemistry of cucurbituril. We have demonstrated that selenocystamine (SeCy) and cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) can form a stable supramolecular complex (Ka =5.5×10(6) M(-1) ). Before complexation, the free SeSe bond in SeCy is rather sensitive to redox stimuli and gets disrupted quickly with addition of reductant or oxidant. However, after binding with CB[6], the SeSe bond becomes quite inert and hardly reacts with reductant or oxidant. One advantage of this supramolecular protection is that it can be applied in a wide pH range from weakly acidic to basic. Additionally, the supramolecular complex formed by SeCy and CB[6] can be reversibly dissociated simply with addition of Ba(2+) .
