Objectives We aimed to examine the change in plasma copper (Cu) level and copper transport proteins level before inserting Cu-IUD and after one menstrual cycle and to show the effect of this change on the thiol disulfide balance in women using copper-containing intrauterine device (Cu-IUD). Method Thirty-three reproductive women who admitted to the gynecology clinic and inserted Cu-IUD were examined in this study. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis, plasma Cu and ceruloplasmin levels and ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity were measured using the blood samples collected just before inserting Cu-IUD and after one menstrual cycle. Results Plasma copper level (p = 0.006), ceruloplasmin (p < 0.001), Ceruloplasmin Ferroxidase (p = 0.005), thiol disulfide homeostasis parameters; native thiol (NT) (p = 0.004), and total thiol (p = 0.003) levels increased significantly. Conclusion After one menstrual cycle in women inserted intrauterine Cu-IUD for contraception, plasma levels of Cu, which is the oxidant molecule, increased significantly. Both plasma ceruloplasmin level and ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity increased due to elevated Cu levels. This increased oxidant status in the acute period was balanced by the increase in the native thiol level.

Puerperal vulvar hematoma causing serious morbidity and rarely mortality is one of the life threatening obstetrical emergencies. A thirty year-old, gravida 7, parity 7, Turkish female patient was hospitalized from emergency department with the complaints of vulvar hematoma and postpartum bleeding after vaginal home delivery. Genital examination revealed a fluctuating hematoma 8x 4 cm on the left vulva. Hemoglobin level was 8.6 g/dL, hematocrit was 28%. Since moderate amount free fluid was determined on pelvic sonographic examination, the patient was operated with the suspect of uterine rupture. However, uterine rupture or retroperitoneal hematoma were not present. After the giant hematoma on vulva was evacuated, hemostasis was achieved and the operation was finished, leaving a hemovac drain. In the postoperative period, the patient was managed with intravenous antibiotic, blood transfusion, anti-inflammatory treatment and ice package on vulva, and was discharged from hospital on postoperative sixth day. We aimed to present the patient with puerperal vulvar hematoma which developed after vaginal home delivery and the management in our clinic, with a literature review.

Urinary retention developing in early period of pregnancy is a rare but urgent condition. A few literatures were encountered on this issue. Retrovert uterus, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory event-related adhesions, ectopic pregnancy and intramural myomas are among predisposing factors. These factors cause stucking of uterus in pelvic cavity by hindering elevation of uterus in the abdomen and acute urinary retention may develop as the result of pressure to urinary bladder floor and urethra The case who developed the urinary retention in her three sequential pregnancies has been discussed in the light of the literature in this paper.

Objective: In our study, we aimed to investigate the effects of Jun N-terminal kinase inhibitor (SP600125) on fibrosis and inflammation in rats with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Method: 50 Wistar-albino rats were divided into five groups (n=10 each): control group, sham group, PCOS group, SP600125+ PCOS group and SP600125 group. In the estradiol valerate (EV)-treated group in which PCOS was injected with a single 4 mg/kg i.p. of EV in 0.2 ml sesame oil and the rats were sacrificed on day 60. The estradiol valerate (EV)-treated + SP600125-treated group was injected with a single 4 mg/kg i.p. of EV in 0.2 ml sesame oil. As of day 60, the treatment group was additionally given 15 mg/kg i.p. of SP600125 once daily for 4 consecutive days and the rats were sacrificed on day 65. Histopathological findings (ovarian morphology, edema, inflammatory cell infiltration, vascular congestion and hyperemia) and collagen type IV immunoexpression were assessed. Results: The SP600125+ PCOS group showed a significant level of improvement in ovarian follicle morphology, edema, inflammatory infiltrate, vascular congestion and hyperemia as compared with the PCOS group. Furthermore, collagen type IV immunoexpression showed a significant reduction in staining intensity on the theca cell layer and ovary stroma as compared to the PCOS group. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the therapeutic effect of SP600125 in the prevention of PCOS in an experimental model.

Anesthesia mumps is characterized by acute transient swelling of the parotid gland association with general anesthesia. We presented a 25 years old pregnant woman with anesthesia mumps after 24 hours Cesarean section, and discussed treatment of anesthesia mumps and differential diagnosis. 25 years old woman underwent to operation for Cesarean section. Her Medical history had no chronic disease, and no allergies. Her mental and psychological status, neurological, other systematical examination findings and laboratory values were normal. General anesthesia was administered. Twenty four hours after the extubation, a large swelling of right more than left parotid region expanding down to the mandibular angle was noted. In conclusion we suggest that especialy obstetrical cases should be performed gently intubation and extubation and used medications should be attention. In additioal, anesthesia mumps of patients may fully recover within a few days without any treatment or with treatment.

Abstract. Nonobstetric surgery during pregnancy is relatively common. This review mainly focuses on common surgical diseases in pregnancy including appendicitis, biliary disease, bowel obstruction, trauma and relevant issues such as timing of surgery, the prevention of preterm labor and fetal monitorisation.
