Background: Periodontitis is a chronic progressive disease and the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Recent studies have shown the impact of oral microbial communities on systemic health and diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, diabetes, hypertension, and Alzheimer's disease. In previous case control studies investigatin the relationship between periodontal disease and the oral microbiota, little attention has been paid to the intersections of these domains. Methods: Here, we used high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing to analyse the differences in the microbial composition in saliva between a group of patients with chronic periodontitis (C; n = 51) and a healthy control group (H; n = 61) and predicted the functional gene composition by Phylogenetic Investigation of Communities by Reconstruction of Unobserved States. Results: We found significant alterations in oral microbial diversity between C and H (P = 0.002). Sixteen genera were significantly different between C and H, and 15 of them were enriched in C linear discriminant analysis (LDA > 2). Fifty functional genes were significantly different between C and H, and 34 of them were enriched in C (P < .025). Conclusions: Periodontitis is associated with significant changes in the oral microbial community.

Abstract Skyrmions in existing 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials have primarily been limited to cryogenic temperatures, and the underlying physical mechanism of the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (DMI), a crucial ingredient for stabilizing chiral skyrmions, remains inadequately explored. Here, we report the observation of Néel-type skyrmions in a vdW ferromagnet Fe3−x GaTe2 above room temperature. Contrary to previous assumptions of centrosymmetry in Fe3−x GaTe2, the atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals that the off-centered FeΙΙ atoms break the spatial inversion symmetry, rendering it a polar metal. First-principles calculations further elucidate that the DMI primarily stems from the Te sublayers through the Fert–Lévy mechanism. Remarkably, the chiral skyrmion lattice in Fe3−x GaTe2 can persist up to 330 K at zero magnetic field, demonstrating superior thermal stability compared to other known skyrmion vdW magnets. This work provides valuable insights into skyrmionics and presents promising prospects for 2D material-based skyrmion devices operating beyond room temperature.

IntroductionThe systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) consolidate all relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) related to initial immunotherapy treatments for advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Our goal is to thoroughly assess the effectiveness and safety of various immunotherapy methods, focusing on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) among patients with advanced ESCC positive for PD-L1.MethodsWe conducted a systematic search of the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases, covering all records from their inception until January 22, 2024. The inclusion criteria targeted patients with advanced ESCC undergoing first-line immunotherapy or chemotherapy, limiting the study selection to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) exclusively. The study upholds the values of openness, originality, and dependability, as evidenced by its enrollment in the Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42024504992).ResultsOur analysis encompasses 7 RCTs, totaling 4688 patients, and evaluates 8 distinct immunotherapy combinations. In advanced ESCC patients irrespective of PD-L1 expression, both sintilimab-chemotherapy and toripalimab-chemotherapy regimens demonstrated comparable OS benefits (HR=0.92, 95% CI: 0.64-1.33). The most pronounced PFS advantages were seen with sintilimab-chemotherapy and camrelizumab-chemotherapy as compared to standard chemotherapy (HR=0.56, 95% CI: 0.46-0.58). Notably, camrelizumab-chemotherapy (HR=0.83, 95% CI: 0.59-1.16) and nivolumab-ipilimumab (HR=0.84, 95% CI: 0.60-1.17) demonstrated significant safety profiles over chemotherapy alone. Subgroup analysis based on PD-L1 expression revealed nivolumab-chemotherapy to yield the highest OS benefit (HR=0.54, 95% CI: 0.37-0.79) in ESCC patients with PD-L1 expression ≥1%. Furthermore, camrelizumab-chemotherapy (HR=0.51, 95% CI: 0.39-0.67) exhibited superior PFS benefits. Among patients with PD-L1 expression ≥10%, camrelizumab-chemotherapy (HR=0.52, 95% CI: 0.35-0.78) emerged as the most efficacious in improving OS, while serplulimab-chemotherapy (HR=0.48, 95% CI: 0.34-0.68) was associated with the longest PFS benefit.ConclusionThe integration of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) with chemotherapy appears to significantly enhance survival outcomes in patients with advanced ESCC compared to chemotherapy alone. Sintilimab-chemotherapy is potentially the optimal regimen for patients without PD-L1 expression. In contrast, nivolumab-chemotherapy and camrelizumab-chemotherapy are likely to offer the best OS and PFS benefits, respectively, in patients with PD-L1 expression ≥1%. Among those with PD-L1 expression ≥10%, camrelizumab-chemotherapy is projected to provide the greatest OS advantage, whereas serplulimab-chemotherapy is anticipated to offer the most prolonged PFS benefit. In order to study the influence of the wind field error on the measurement results of the mine ultrasonic time difference wind speed sensor, the computational fluid dynamics method was used to analyze the flow field and acoustic channel velocity distribution of sensors with different structure types under different wind directions and wind speeds. The research results indicate that the measured wind speed of the opposite-type structure is significantly affected by the wind direction angle than the reflection-type structure. The corrected relative error of the opposite-type structure at a 45 ° wind direction angle is the smallest and better than the reflection-type structure. Among three reflection-type structures, the concave transducers has the smallest impact on wind speed measurement, followed by raised transducers, and semi-raised transducers has the greatest impact. The measurement of concave transducers is least affected by the wind direction angle, while the raised and semi-raised transducers have similar effects. Among the three installation methods, the semi-raised installation has better flow field consistency at different flow velocity, and the corrected measurement error is the smallest. Choosing an appropriate structural layout for ultrasonic wind speed sensors can improve measurement accuracy.

The electrolytic capacitor-less variable frequency drive scheme using film capacitors to replace electrolytic capacitors has been partially applied in the field of washing machines and air conditioners driven by permanent magnet synchronous motors, due to its advantages of good reliability and low cost. However, recently, with the development and application of synchronous reluctance motors to replace permanent magnet synchronous motors, the existing methods have problems such as id = 0 control unsuitable for synchronous reluctance motors, low power factor on the input side, and poor motor running performance and other problems. Therefore, firstly, this paper takes the variable frequency drive system for the synchronous reluctance motors as the research object, analyses the influence of the value of the bus capacitance on the performance of the variable frequency drive system, and provides a theoretical basis for the selection of bus capacitance. Secondly, a current control strategy based on power balance and compensation is proposed, which includes current feeding based on power balance, input voltage phase detection based on a phase-locked loop, and output voltage vector regulation based on power compensation. To verify the correctness of the proposed method, a platform was built and tested, and the experimental results show that the electrolytic capacitor-less variable frequency drive system for synchronous reluctance motors using the method proposed in this paper not only improves the power factor at the input side of the drive system but also reduces the fluctuation of the motor speed and torque, which in turn improves the operating performance of the motor.

With the rapid advancement of new-generation information technology, the virtual–real fusion interaction has increasingly become a crucial technique for structural analysis to determine the strength envelope of hulls. A high-precision assembly of the experimental devices in a virtual environment is vital. A virtual assembly method for a structural virtual–real fusion test based on the oriented bounding box (OBB) algorithm, the Devillers and Guigue algorithm, and differential triangle facets algorithm are proposed in this paper. The experiment of the connector in a typical offshore floating platform is performed as a case, which indicates that the virtual assembly method proposed in this paper enables the assessment of assembly virtually prior to the actual experiment, and the assembly accuracy can reach 0.01 mm. The digitalization and virtual–real fusion interaction for the mechanical experiment of hulls are advanced to ensure efficiency, safety, and economy.

TiB2 nano-particle reinforced CoCrFeMnNi composite has been additively manufactured by using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technique. In comparison with the matrix CoCrFeMnNi sample, the average grain size of the TiB2 doped CoCrFeMnNi (CoCrFeMnNi + TiB2) sample reduces from 26.27 μm to 7.51 μm, appearing a morphological transformation from columnar grains to fine equiaxed grains and fine dendritic grains. Correspondingly, the compressive yield strength (σy) sharply increases from 484.41 ± 57.81 MPa of CoCrFeMnNi HEA to 952.62 ± 38.15 MPa of CoCrFeMnNi + TiB2, and the tensile yield strength increases from 480.27 ± 1.25 MPa to 834.21 ± 15.93 MPa, revealing a substantial enhancement of mechanical properties. The structural analysis unveils that the CoCrFeMnNi + TiB2 sample formed a tetragonal σ phase beside the FCC matrix and TiB2 phases compared with the single FCC phase of CoCrFeMnNi HEA. Especially, atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy discloses that the TiB2 nanoparticles epitaxially grow onto the FCC matrix phase with [01–10]TiB2//[011]FCC orientation relationship. Theoretical calculations indicate that the enhancement mechanism of the CoCrFeMnNi + TiB2 sample should originate from a synergistic strengthening effect which is induced by grain refinement, TiB2 particles, σ phases and dislocations. Our work should provide a new view to utilize the rapid solidification process of LPBF and ceramic nano-particle reinforcement for the enhanced mechanical properties of HEAs with great potential.

In mountainous landscapes, the diverse geotechnical conditions amplify landslide susceptibility. Factors such as precipitation and seismic activity can trigger landslides, while inherent hazards such as voids, fissures, and compaction deficits jeopardize long-term slope stability. Detecting and forecasting these susceptibilities accurately is crucial. In this paper, the time-domain finite-difference approach and the gprMax software are used to conduct forward modeling of landslide susceptibility. An electrical model of subsurface aqueous structures is created, including water-filled and air-filled cavities, fracture zones, and fault lines. The distinctive radar signal responses within these environments are examined, and a dataset of B-scan images associated with their electrical models is constructed. By employing deep learning algorithms and the robust nonlinear mapping ability of convolutional neural networks in the Pix2Pix generative adversarial network, we accelerate the intelligent inversion of the geological radar data on landslide susceptibility. This innovative approach effectively reconstructs hazard models, offering a reliable basis for interpretation of radar signals.

Photocatalytic MoS2 with visible light response is considered as a promising bactericidal material owing to its non–toxicity and high antibacterial efficiency. However, photocatalysts always exist as powder, so it is difficult to settle photocatalysts on the metal surface, which limits their application in aqueous environments. To solve this problem, ultrasound and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were introduced into the co-deposition process of MoS2 and zinc matrix, so that novel MoS2–Zn coatings were obtained. In this process, ultrasound and SDS strongly promoted the dispersion and adsorption of MoS2 on the co-depositing surfaces. Then MoS2 were proved to be composited into the Zn matrix with effective structures, and the addition of SDS effectively increased the loading content of MoS2 in the MoS2–Zn coatings. Besides, the antibacterial performance of the MoS2–Zn coatings was evaluated with three typical fouling bacteria E.coli, S.aureus and B.wiedmannii. The MoS2–Zn coating showed high and broad–spectrum antibacterial properties with over 98 % inhibition rate against these three bacteria. Furthermore, it is proved that the MoS2–Zn coatings generated superoxide (·O2−) and hydroxyl radicals (·OH) under visible light, which played the dominant and subordinate roles in the antibacterial process, respectively. The MoS2–Zn coatings also showed high antibacterial stability after four “light–dark” cycles. According to the results of the attached bacteria, the MoS2–Zn coatings were considered to effectively repel the living pelagic bacteria instead of killing the attached ones, which was highly environmentally friendly. The obtained MoS2–Zn coatings were considered promising in biofilm inhibiting and marine antifouling fields.

Abstract Background Satisfactory brain relaxation is essential in neurosurgery. Desflurane anesthesia and propofol-based total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) have different effects on cerebral hemodynamics, potentially contributing to discrepant brain relaxation. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of desflurane and TIVA on brain relaxation in patients undergoing craniotomy for supratentorial tumors. Methods In this randomized, controlled study, we enrolled patients aged 18–60 years, with ASA I–III, who were scheduled to undergo elective craniotomy for supratentorial tumors. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive desflurane anesthesia or TIVA. The primary outcome was the proportion of satisfactory brain relaxation. Secondary outcomes included emergence and extubation times, recovery of cognitive function and postoperative complications. Results Of 369 patients who were assessed for eligibility, 111 were randomized and 110 were included in the modified intention-to-treat analysis (55 in the desflurane group and 55 in the TIVA group). The proportion of satisfactory brain relaxation was similar between the two groups: 69% in the desflurane group and 73% in the TIVA group (RR: 0.950, 95% CI: 0.748–1.207; P = 0.675). Abstract Current methods for climate change assessment ignore the significant differences in uncertainty in model projections of the two key constituents of drought, precipitation, and evapotranspiration. We present here a new basis for assessing future drought using climate model simulations that addresses this limitation. The new method estimates the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) in a two‐stage process. The first stage of our proposed approach is to derive the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) using reliable atmospheric variables, which are filtered with a wavelet‐based spectral transformation. This derived SPI is then converted to an equivalent SPEI by combining it with climate model evapotranspiration simulations. We assess the performance of our proposed approach across Australia. The consistency of general circulation model (GCM) drought projections, in terms of both frequency and severity, is improved using the derived SPI. Incorporating evapotranspiration further improves the consistency of the multiple GCMs and drought time scales. The proposed framework can also be generalized to other water resources applications, where the differences in GCM uncertainty for precipitation and evapotranspiration affect climate change impact assessments.

Digital twins, an innovative technology propelled by data and models, play a seminal role in the digital transformation and intelligent upgrade of ships. This study introduces a digital twin methodology for the real-time monitoring of ship structure deformation fields, based on finite discrete strain data, and a visualization tool framework is developed using virtual reality technology. First, the inverse Finite Element Method (iFEM) is employed to derive the deformation field of the ship structure in real time using sensor strain data. Secondly, the deformation field data obtained based on the iFEM algorithm is converted into general visualization data conducive to interpretation within virtual reality (VR) applications. Lastly, a digital twin software tool is built to enable synchronous responses and interactions between the virtual scene and the physical scene, directly superposing particular virtual objects (data acquired by sensors, computer-aided design (CAD) virtual models, and deformation field cloud images) onto the physical scene in real time. The digital twin tool embodies a virtual reality visualization system framework integrating the physical data measurement, reconstruction, analysis, expression, storage, rendering, and interaction of deformation field data. Through practical application, the flexibility, effectiveness, and compatibility of the developed prototype tool are verified. According to the results, the system can enhance the efficiency of scientific communication, model validation, and interdisciplinary sharing during the analysis and evaluation of the mechanical properties of ship structures.

Powdery mildew (PM), caused by the fungus Microsphaera diffusa, causes severe yield losses in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] under suitable environmental conditions. Identifying resistance genes and developing resistant cultivars may prevent soybean PM damage. In this study, analysis of F1, F2, and F8:11 recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations derived from the cross between Zhonghuang 24 (ZH24) and Huaxia 3 (HX3) indicated that adult-plant resistance (APR) to powdery mildew in the soybean cultivar (cv.) ZH24 was controlled by a single dominant locus. A high-density genetic linkage map of the RIL population was used for fine mapping. The APR locus in ZH24 was mapped to a 281-kb genomic region on chromosome 16. Using 283 susceptible plants of another F2 population, the candidate region was fine-mapped to a 32.8-kb genomic interval flanked by the markers InDel14 and Gm16_428. The interval harbored five genes, including four disease resistance (R)-like genes, according to the Williams 82.a2.v1 reference genome. Quantitative real-time PCR assays of candidate genes revealed that the expression levels of Glyma.16g214300 and Glyma.16g214500 were changed by M. diffusa infection and might be involved in disease defense. Rmd_B13 showed all-stage resistance (ASR) to PM in soybean cv. B13. An allelism test in the F2 segregating population from the cross of ZH24 × B13 suggested that the APR locus Rmd_ZH24 and the ASR locus Rmd_B13 may be allelic or tightly linked. These results provide a reference marker-assisted selection in breeding programs.

Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) affects seed quality and production of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) worldwide. SC18 is one of the dominant SMV strains in South China, and accession Zhonghuang 24 displayed resistance to SC18. The F1, F2 and 168 F11 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) population derived from a hybridization between Zhonghuang 24 (resistant, R) and Huaxia 3 (susceptible, S) were used in this study. According to the segregation ratios of the F2 generation (3R:1S) and the recombinant inbred lines (RILs) population (1R:1S), one dominant locus may regulate the resistance to SC18 in Zhonghuang 24. By using composite interval mapping (CIM), Rsc18 was mapped to a 415.357-kb region on chromosome 13. Three candidate genes, including one NBS-LRR type gene and two serine/threonine protein type genes, were identified according to the genetic annotations, which may be related to the resistance to SC18. The qRT-PCR demonstrated that these genes were up-regulated in the R genotype compared to the control. In conclusion, the findings of this research enhanced the understanding about the R genes at the Rsc18 locus. Moreover, our results will provide insights for designing molecular markers to improve marker-assisted selection and developing new varieties with resistance to SC18.

Abstract Background Deciphering the hereditary mechanism of seed iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn) content in soybean is important and sustainable to address the “hidden hunger” that presently affects approximately 2 billion people worldwide. Therefore, in order to detect genomic regions related to soybean seed Fe and Zn content, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population with 248 lines was assessed in four environments to detect Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) related to soybean seed Fe and Zn content. Result Wide variation was found in seed Fe and Zn content in four environments, and genotype, environment, and genotype × environment interactions had significant influences on both the seed Fe and Zn content. A positive correlation was observed between seed Fe content and seed Zn content, and broad-sense heritability (H 2 ) of seed Fe and Zn content were 0.73 and 0.75, respectively. In this study, five QTLs for seed Fe content were detected with 4.57 - 32.71% of phenotypic variation explained (PVE) and logarithm of odds (LOD) scores ranging from 3.60 to 33.79. Five QTLs controlling the seed Zn content were detected, and they individually explained 3.35 to 26.48% of the phenotypic variation, with LOD scores ranging from 3.64 to 20.4. Meanwhile, 409,541 high-quality single-nucleotide variants (SNVs) and 85,102 InDels (except intergenic regions) between two bi-parental lines were identified by whole genome resequencing. A total of 12 candidate genes were reported in one major QTL for seed Fe content and two major QTLs for seed Zn content, with the help of RNA-Seq analysis, gene ontology (GO) enrichment, gene annotation, and bi-parental whole genome sequencing (WGS) data. Conclusions Limited studies were performed about microelement of soybean, so these results may play an important role in the biofortification of Fe and Zn and accelerate the development of marker-assisted selection (MAS) for breeding soybeans fortified with iron and zinc.

Abstract Roof collapse is a form of rock failure driven by energy release. The rectangular elastic thin plate (RETP) model, widely used in coal mining engineering research, reflects the law of the movement of overlying strata of a coal seam. The stress distribution regularity of each delamination can be analyzed using the theoretical model of RETPs. In this study, a new method for determining both the height of the caving zone and the damaged area of the roadway roof is developed based on the energy evolution law. The damaged area and the oval‐shaped boundary of each stratum are determined using the damage criterion deduced by calculating the strain energy of the elementary volume. As a case study, the collapse height was obtained by accumulating the thickness of damaged strata, and the length of bolts was increased from 2.2 m to 2.8 m, effectively preventing the reoccurrence of a roof collapse for the No. 30102 working face in Nanliang Coal Mine. In addition, the vertical boundary of the caved zone can be outlined by connecting and fitting the end vertexes of the minor axis in the oval‐shaped damaged area of the RETPs. The supporting angle of the bolts in two side walls of the roadway was decreased from 75° to 70°. This method was verified and applied in a roof collapse investigation by determining the length and drilling angle of the anchor rod and anchor cable required to develop reasonable support schemes. The results of this research can be used for ensuring safety in coal mining and subway or tunnel construction in China.

Abstract Background In soybean, some circadian clock genes have been identified as loci for maturity traits. However, the effects of these genes on soybean circadian rhythmicity and their impacts on maturity are unclear. Results We used two geographically, phenotypically and genetically distinct cultivars, conventional juvenile Zhonghuang 24 (with functional J/GmELF3a, a homolog of the circadian clock indispensable component EARLY FLOWERING 3) and long juvenile Huaxia 3 (with dysfunctional j/Gmelf3a) to dissect the soybean circadian clock with time-series transcriptomal RNA-Seq analysis of unifoliate leaves on a day scale. The results showed that several known circadian clock components, including RVE1, GI, LUX and TOC1, phase differently in soybean than in Arabidopsis, demonstrating that the soybean circadian clock is obviously different from the canonical model in Arabidopsis. In contrast to the observation that ELF3 dysfunction results in clock arrhythmia in Arabidopsis, the circadian clock is conserved in soybean regardless of the functional status of J/GmELF3a. Soybean exhibits a circadian rhythmicity in both gene expression and alternative splicing. Genes can be grouped into six clusters, C1-C6, with different expression profiles. Many more genes are grouped into the night clusters (C4-C6) than in the day cluster (C2), showing that night is essential for gene expression and regulation. Moreover, soybean chromosomes are activated with a circadian rhythmicity, indicating that high-order chromosome structure might impact circadian rhythmicity. Interestingly, night time points were clustered in one group, while day time points were separated into two groups, morning and afternoon, demonstrating that morning and afternoon are representative of different environments for soybean growth and development. However, no genes were consistently differentially expressed over different time-points, indicating that it is necessary to perform a circadian rhythmicity analysis to more thoroughly dissect the function of a gene. Moreover, the analysis of the circadian rhythmicity of the GmFT family showed that GmELF3a might phase- and amplitude-modulate the GmFT family to regulate the juvenility and maturity traits of soybean. Conclusions These results and the resultant RNA-seq data should be helpful in understanding the soybean circadian clock and elucidating the connection between the circadian clock and soybean maturity.

Abstract Background Phytophthora root rot (PRR) caused by Phytophthora sojae (P. sojae) is one of the most serious limitations to soybean production worldwide. The identification of resistance gene(s) and their incorporation into elite varieties is an effective approach for breeding to prevent soybean from being harmed by this disease. A valuable mapping population of 228 F8:11 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross of the resistant cultivar Guizao1 and the susceptible cultivar BRSMG68 and a high-density genetic linkage map with an average distance of 0.81 centimorgans (cM) between adjacent bin markers in this population were used to map and explore candidate gene(s). Results PRR resistance in Guizao1 was found to be controlled by a single Mendelian locus and was finely mapped to a 367.371-kb genomic region on chromosome 3 harbouring 19 genes, including 7 disease resistance (R)-like genes, in the reference Willliams 82 genome. Quantitative real-time PCR assays of possible candidate genes revealed that Glyma.03 g05300 was likely involved in PRR resistance. Conclusions These findings from the fine mapping of a novel Rps locus will serve as a basis for the cloning and transfer of resistance genes in soybean and the breeding of P. sojae-resistant soybean cultivars through marker-assisted selection.

Blasting is a key method of controlling large-area hanging roofs and strong mine pressure in coal mine. The crack propagation direction after blasting has a decisive influence on control effect, and the existing blasting techniques have poor directionality, making it difficult to form a continuous, precise crack. A compound blasting technique (CBT) was proposed; this could achieve a precision, directional crack by using the combination of perforating bullet and explosives, with perforating bullet detonation first and then explosive blasting. The principle of directional crack formation by CBT was studied and a complete set of equipment was introduced, and the effect of continuous directional crack forming was studied experimentally. A CBT test was conducted in Tashan coal mine (Datong mining area): the results showed that a single crack surface was formed in the borehole after the compound blasting, which indicated the desired blasting effect. The CBT improves the accuracy and controllability of fractures and realizes precise directional control of rock strata.

Oocyte vitrification technology is widely used for assisted reproduction and fertility preservation, which requires precise washing sequences and timings of cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) treatment to relieve the osmotic shock to cells. The gold standard Cryotop method is extensively used in oocyte vitrification and is currently the most commonly used method in reproductive centers. However, the Cryotop method requires precise and complex manual manipulation by an embryologist, whose proficiency directly determines the effect of vitrification. Therefore, in this study, an automatic microfluidic system consisting of a novel open microfluidic chip and a set of automatic devices was established as a standardized operating protocol to facilitate the conventional manual Cryotop method and minimize the osmotic shock applied to the oocyte. The proposed open microfluidic system could smoothly change the CPA concentration around the oocyte during vitrification pretreatment, and transferred the treated oocyte to the Cryotop with a tiny droplet. The system better conformed to the operating habits of embryologists, whereas the integration of commercialized Cryotop facilitates the subsequent freezing and thawing processes. With standardized operating procedures, our system provides consistent treatment effects for each operation, leading to comparable survival rate, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level of oocytes to the manual Cryotop operations. The vitrification platform is the first reported microfluidic system integrating the function of cells transfer from the processing chip, which avoids the risk of cell loss or damage in a manual operation and ensures the sufficient cooling rate during liquid nitrogen (LN2) freezing. Our study demonstrates significant potential of the automatic microfluidic approach to serve as a facile and universal solution for the vitrification of various precious cells.

An algorithm was developed detect the partial demagnetization of permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) under both stationary and nonstationary conditions. On the basis of the recursive least-squares (RLS) method, the vital component of fault-related harmonics in the current could be extracted on the line, and its proportion to fundamental component could be regarded as the indicator of partial demagnetization faults. The proposed algorithm is fairly easy to realize and could substitute conventional and complicated signal processing methods such as Fourier transform and wavelet transform when detecting partial demagnetization. Experiments with inverter-fed healthy and partially demagnetized PMSMs are carried out to substantiate the effectiveness of proposed algorithm under both stationary and nonstationary conditions. At the end, a way to eliminate the impact of eccentricity fault on the partial demagnetization diagnosis is given.

Background Hordeum vulgare is an economically important crop that is consumed in large quantities in the world. In a previous investigation, we found that cadmium (Cd) could induce some nucleolar materials containing the argyrophilic proteins scattered in the nuclei and located in the cytoplasm in the root tip cells of H. vulgare. However, what kinds of nucleolar proteins are affected has not been reported. In order to further confirm the cytological effects of Cd on nucleolus and nucleolar proteins, alterations in the cellular localization and expression of two major nucleolar proteins: fibrillarin and nucleolin in the root tips of H. vulgare were studied in the present investigation. Methods Cytological effects of Cd on nucleolus were observed by silver-staining method and two nucleolarproteins: nucleolin and fibrillarin were observed and analyzed by means of indirect immunofluorescent microscopy and western blotting. Results Results from the present investigation demonstrated that under Cd stress (cadmium chloride at 50 and 100 ?M), Cd could disturb the nucleolar cycle with the extrusion of silver-stained materials containing argyrophilic proteins from the nucleolus into the cytoplasm. Nucleolar material containing nucleolin and fibrillarin and their movement into the cytoplasm following Cd stress was detected with indirect immunofluorescence techniques. Western blotting revealed higher expression of these two major nucleoproteins in Cd-treated roots, which was consistent with the results obtained by indirect immunofluorescence. Conclusion The findings of the present study confirm that Cd can have toxic effects on nucleolus and affect the expression of nucleolar proteins, nucleolin and fibrillarin. The data obtained here can provide valuable information for monitoring and forecast early effects of exposure to Cd in polluted environments.

Out‐of‐plane polarization is a highly desired property of two‐dimensional (2D) ferroelectrics for application in vertical sandwich‐type photoferroelectric devices, especially in ultrathin ferroelectronic devices. Nevertheless, despite great advances that have been made in recent years, out‐of‐plane polarization remains unrealized in the 2D hybrid double perovskite ferroelectric family. Here, from our previous work 2D hybrid double perovskite HQERN ((S3HQ)4EuRb(NO3)8, S3HQ=S‐3‐hydroxylquinuclidinium), we designed a molecular strategy of F‐substitution on organic component to successfully obtain FQERN ((S3FQ)4EuRb(NO3)8, S3FQ=S‐3‐fluoroquinuclidinium) showing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) response. Remarkably, compared to the monopolar axis ferroelectric HQERN, FQERN not only shows multiferroicity with the coexistence of multipolar axis ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity but also realizes out‐of‐plane ferroelectric polarization and a dramatic enhancement of Curie temperature of 94 K. This is mainly due to the introduction of F‐substituted organic cations, which leads to a change in orientation and a reduction in crystal lattice void occupancy. Our study demonstrates that F‐substitution is an efficient strategy to realize and optimize ferroelectric functional characteristics, giving more possibility of 2D ferroelectric materials for applications in micro‐nano optoelectronic devices. SUMMARY: Floral patterns are unique to rice and contribute significantly to its reproductive success. SL1 encodes a C2H2 transcription factor that plays a critical role in flower development in rice, but the molecular mechanism regulated by it remains poorly understood. Here, we describe interactions of the SL1 with floral homeotic genes, SPW1, and DL in specifying floral organ identities and floral meristem fate. First, the sl1 spw1 double mutant exhibited a stamen‐to‐pistil transition similar to that of sl1, spw1, suggesting that SL1 and SPW1 may located in the same pathway regulating stamen development. Expression analysis revealed that SL1 is located upstream of SPW1 to maintain its high level of expression and that SPW1, in turn, activates the B‐class genes OsMADS2 and OsMADS4 to suppress DL expression indirectly. Secondly, sl1 dl displayed a severe loss of floral meristem determinacy and produced amorphous tissues in the third/fourth whorl. Expression analysis revealed that the meristem identity gene OSH1 was ectopically expressed in sl1 dl in the fourth whorl, suggesting that SL1 and DL synergistically terminate the floral meristem fate. Another meristem identity gene, FON1, was significantly decreased in expression in sl1 background mutants, suggesting that SL1 may directly activate its expression to regulate floral meristem fate. Finally, molecular evidence supported the direct genomic binding of SL1 to SPW1 and FON1 and the subsequent activation of their expression. In conclusion, we present a model to illustrate the roles of SL1, SPW1, and DL in floral organ specification and regulation of floral meristem fate in rice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
