There is growing interest in the non-invasive identification and monitoring of the outcome of liver damage in obese patients. Plasma cytokeratin-18 (CK-18) fragment levels correlate with the magnitude of hepatocyte apoptosis and have recently been proposed to independently predict the presence of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). The aim of the study was to analyze the associations of CK-18 with obesity and related complications: insulin resistance, impaired lipid metabolism and the secretion of hepatokines, adipokines and pro-inflammatory cytokines. The study involved 151 overweight and obese patients (BMI 25–40), without diabetes, dyslipidemia or apparent liver disease. Liver function was assessed based on alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and the fatty liver index (FLI). CK-18 M30 plasma levels, FGF-21, FGF-19 and cytokines were determined by ELISA. CK-18 values >150 U/l were accompanied by high ALT, GGT and FLI, insulin resistance, postprandial hypertriglyceridemia, elevated FGF-21 and MCP-1 and decreased adiponectin. ALT activity was the strongest independent factor influencing high CK-18 plasma levels, even after an adjustment for age, sex and BMI [β coefficient (95%CI): 0.40 (0.19–0.61)]. In conclusion, the applied CK-18 cut-off point at 150 U/l allows to distinguish between two metabolic phenotypes in obesity.

Universities and colleges are fertile foodscapes for action-based education. They are physical and socio-cultural sites where pressing food systems problems play out at micro to macro scales. Structural inequities based on race, class, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, dis/ability, and other forms of marginalization affect both access to food and to agri-food learning opportunities. In this article, we propose that students can learn through their everyday experiences of engaging with their physical and socio-cultural environment, namely the campus food system, by conducting foodscape mapping. Since 2015, the University of California Berkeley Food Institute has supported the Foodscape Mapping Project, in which students, staff, and faculty generate food systems knowledge while developing practical interventions to advance justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI). We investigate how campus foodscape mapping might generate substantive learning about JEDI in food systems education; the kinds of learning that take place through foodscape mapping; and the educational practices and institutional structures that can support learning through foodscape mapping. We identify at least eight forms and processes of expansive learning that emerged through mapping work, using students' own insights into what they were learning. Finally, we reflect on our learning experiences in running the project, and develop broader design elements that other campuses can apply.

Introduction: Sensory integration processing is defined as organization and interpretation of stimuli reaching the organism. The correctly functioning nervous system interprets sensory impressions, which enables development of awareness of one’s own body and of the surrounding environment. Sensory processing disorders can have a significant impact on the child’s functioning. Aim: The objective of the research was to answer the question whether sensory integration processing disorders in preschool children have an influence on their physical fitness and everyday activities. The research covered a group of 60 preschool children. The studied group comprised 30 children with diagnosed sensory processing disorders, while the control group consisted of 30 children with no disorders diagnosed. Results: The results achieved demonstrate lower physical fitness of children from the studied group and problems with performing everyday activities. The tasks connected with speed and agility were the most problematic. Among everyday activities, the most difficult were: cycling, ball catching, getting dressed and descending stairs. Knowledge of sensory integration processing disorders helps understand problems in the child’s functioning and provides an opportunity to intervene in the form of the sensory integration therapy.

Prematurely born babies account for nearly 7% of all infants coming into the world, and there are more and more extremely small premature babies being born. A report covering 184 countries shows that each year, 14.9 million children are born ahead of time. Maintaining life is the fi rst task faced by the medical service. The issue regarding development and the future of these children is the next stage of interest for both doctors and a number of specialists from related fields. The aim of the study was to review literature concerning premature newborns in the fi eld of sensorimotor development within the fi rst years of life, taking into account the hazards and possible forms of early support. An attempt was made to present the current state of knowledge in the scope of recommended and used methods of conduct as well as to assess the long-term effects of undertaken interventions. A review of Polish-, English- and French-language literature was conducted, which concerned sensory motor development, introduction of early rehabilitation and support programmes for premature infants. Research papers and review works from the last 10 years included in databases (PubMed and websites of Polish medical publishing houses) were analysed. The works were searched using the following keywords: premature baby, sensorimotor development. The growing group of preemies requires adapted care. To counteract the indicated threats, a therapeutic intervention should be introduced precisely and in accordance with a child’s needs. There is a need to broaden knowledge about development in this group of children and to create a proven developmental support system that would be based on long-term research. Therapy of sensory processing disorders is becoming more widespread and available as a therapeutic method, and supports the development of a child. Recently, the availability of classes conducted using this method has greatly increased, and more and more children are beginning to take part in these therapeutic activities. Sensory processing disorders have signifi cant impact on the functioning of a child. The study was conducted to answer the question of whether and how co-existing diseases and disorders can affect the process of diagnosis and therapy in the fi eld of sensory processing disorders. The study included a group of children reported to diagnosis for sensory integration disorders at the Center for Sensory Integration Disorders and Rehabilitation in Lublin between 2012-2014. All subjects lived in the Lublin Voivodeship. We analyzed records of 40 children aged 2 years 6 months to 9 years 8 months, for whom the diagnosis was carried out in the direction of sensory processing disorders, and their diagnosis indicated a sensory integration dysfunction. At the time of beginning therapy, on the basis of interviews conducted with parents/legal guardians, co-existing diseases or disorders related to 37% of those undergoing therapy. Additional tests and consultations, conducted already in the course of therapy, showed co-existing disorders or diseases for a larger group of children - data collected during the 6-month period from the beginning of treatment showed that 65% of children required care of a specialist clinic. The largest group were children who required additional orthoptic therapy. Knowledge of co-existing diseases and disorders is a condition making the therapy safe and effective. Nutrient excess enhances glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) secretion, which may in turn contribute to the development of liver steatosis. We hypothesized that elevated GIP levels in obesity may affect markers of liver injury through microRNAs. The study involved 128 subjects (body mass index (BMI) 25−40). Fasting and postprandial GIP, glucose, insulin, and lipids, as well as fasting alanine aminotransferase (ALT), γ-glutamyltransferase (GGT), cytokeratin-18, fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-19, and FGF-21 were determined. TaqMan low density array was used for quantitative analysis of blood microRNAs. Fasting GIP was associated with ALT [β = 0.16 (confidence interval (CI): 0.01−0.32)], triglycerides [β = 0.21 (95% CI: 0.06−0.36], and FGF-21 [β = 0.20 (95%CI: 0.03−0.37)]; and postprandial GIP with GGT [β = 0.17 (95%CI: 0.03−0.32)]. The odds ratio for elevated fatty liver index (>73%) was 2.42 (95%CI: 1.02−5.72) for high GIP versus low GIP patients. The miRNAs profile related to a high GIP plasma level included upregulated miR-136-5p, miR-320a, miR-483-5p, miR-520d-5p, miR-520b, miR-30e-3p, and miR-571. Analysis of the interactions of these microRNAs with gene expression pathways suggests their potential contribution to the regulation of the activity of genes associated with insulin resistance, fatty acids metabolism, and adipocytokines signaling. Exaggerated fasting and postprandial secretion of GIP in obesity are associated with elevated liver damage markers as well as FGF-21 plasma levels. Differentially expressed microRNAs suggest additional, epigenetic factors contributing to the gut−liver cross-talk.

Infections caused by non-albicans Candida spp. are an important medical problem in people from risk groups, e.g. hematooncological patients. The aim of this paper was to analyse the in vitro activity of micafungin against 30 clinical isolates of non-albicans Candida spp. (C. glabrata, C. famata, C. tropicalis, C. inconspicua, C. lusitaniae, C. parapsilosis, C. krusei) by way of the E-test procedure, allowing determination of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). Data presented in this paper indicate that most of the studied clinical isolates - 27 (90%) showed sensitivity to micafungin, with MIC values ranging from 0.004 to 2 mg/l, while 3 (10%) isolates, including 2 isolates of C. tropicalis and 1 isolate of C. famata, were resistant to micafungin, with MIC values > 32 mg/l. The MIC50 and MIC90 values of micafungin, defined as MIC inhibited growth of 50% or 90% of the isolates studied, were 0.008 mg/l or 2 mg/l, respectively. In the case of C. glabrata isolates, MICs ranged from 0.004 to 0.016 mg/l, while MIC50 was 0.004 mg/l and MIC90 - 0.008 mg/l. Our data confirm the utility of micafungin for the therapy of the infections caused by non-albicans Candida spp., especially C. glabrata.

Nutrients influence bone turnover. Carboxylated osteocalcin (Gla-OC) participates in bone formation whereas its undercarboxylated form (Glu-OC) acts as a hormone in glucose metabolism. The aim of the study was to determine the responses of Gla-OC, Glu-OC, and total-OC (calculated as the sum of Gla-OC and Glu-OC) to a high fat mixed meal tolerance test (HFMTT) in non-obese (body mass index (BMI) < 30 kg/m2, n = 24) and obese subjects (30 < BMI < 40 kg/m2, n = 70) (both sexes, aged 25⁻65 years). Serum Gla-OC and Glu-OC were measured at baseline as well as at 2 and 6 h during a HFMTT by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Baseline Gla-OC, Glu-OC, and total-OC levels were lower in obese individuals compared to non-obese participants (p = 0.037, p = 0.016 and p = 0.005, respectively). The decrease in Gla-OC and total-OC, but not in Glu-OC, concentrations during the HFMTT was suppressed in obese, but not in non-obese controls (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, p = 0.08, respectively). Subjects with the highest homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index values had a less pronounced decrease in total-OC compared to patients with values of HOMA-IR index in the 1st quartile (p < 0.05). Net incremental area under Gla-OC inversely correlated with adiponectin (rho = −0.35, p = 0.001). Increase in insulin sensitivity and adiponectin level in obese subjects could beneficially influence postprandial bone turnover expressed by osteocalcin concentration.
