Abstract String loop vibrations in a central plane of a Schwarzschild black hole are investigated for various string equations of state. We discuss string loop stability and derive frequencies of vibrational modes. Using the vibrating string loop model we fit the quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) observed in X-ray signal coming from some compact sources. We demonstrate how the string-loop parameters are related to the radial and vertical fundamental vibration modes, and how the vibrational instability can be related to the Q-factor characterizing the observed QPOs.

Abstract We study motion of a phonon, a particle representing the quanta of the sound wave in the (2+1) spacetime of the acoustic analogous axially symmetric black hole, so-called acoustic (sonic) black hole. Similar to the real objects known as black holes in relativity theories, the phenomenon called acoustic black hole possesses the ergoregion whose area is increasing with increasing rotation of the black hole, leading to more phonons being affected by the supersonic flow. It is found that phonons in the ergoregion of an acoustic black hole behave differently than those outside of it. Specifically, we found that the phonons in the ergoregion are affected by the supersonic flow of the fluid, causing them to move in different directions than those outside the ergoregion. Moreover, we presented calculations of the deflection angle and time delay of the phonon in the field of the acoustic black hole in the weak field regime that can be useful to test the geometry of the acoustic black hole in the laboratory.

In a recent study devoted to the influence of electromagnetic radiation reaction on the motion of radiating charged particles in magnetized black hole spacetimes the authors claim that the tail term cannot be neglected in the complete DeWitt–Brehme equation, putting into doubt the previous papers where such an approximation was used. Here, we demonstrate by using simple dimensional arguments that such a statement is misleading in many astrophysically relevant situations. In the case of relativistic electrons moving around a stellar-mass black hole, the tail term is ignorable if a magnetic field of at least a few Gauss is present.On the other hand, in different situations, the tail term can be relevant, as demonstrated in the case of orbital widening, where it can even amplify the effect.

The detailed and comprehensive analysis of radiation processes in accretion disks consisting of electrically charged particles around black holes may provide powerful information about the spacetime geometry of the central black hole. We investigate the circular orbits of electrically charged particles around an electrically charged black-bounce Reissner–Nordström (RN) black hole, known as an RN Simpson–Visser (SV) black hole. We also study the profiles of the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCOs), energy, and angular momentum of the particles in their ISCOs, as well as the efficiency of energy release processes in the accretion disk in the Novikov–Thorne model. Finally, we calculate and study the effects of the black-bounce parameter as well as the black-hole charge on the intensity of the radiation of ultrarelativistic charged particles orbiting the charged RN SV black hole along circular orbits and falling into the black hole. It is observed that the black-bounce parameter essentially decreases the ISCO radius, and consequently the energy extraction and intensity of electromagnetic radiation.

Abstract We are fitting dynamics of electrically neutral hot-spot orbiting around Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) source in Galactic center, represented by various modifications of the standard Kerr black hole (BH), to the three flares observed by the GRAVITY instrument on May 27, July 22, July 28, 2018. We consider stationary, axisymmetric, and asymptotically flat spacetimes describing charged BHs in general relativity (GR) combined with nonlinear electrodynamics, or reflecting the influence of dark matter (DM), or in so called parameterized dirty Kerr spacetimes, and test them using the hot-spot data. We show that the orbital frequencies as well as positions of the hot-spots orbiting the considered BHs fit the observed positions and periods of the flare orbits, and give relevant constraints on the parameters of the considered BH spacetimes and the gravity or other theories behind such modified spacetimes.

Abstract The study of the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of X-ray flux observed in the stellar-mass black hole (BH) binaries or quasars can provide a powerful tool for testing the phenomena occurring in strong gravity regime. We thus fit the data of QPOs observed in the well known microquasars as well as active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the framework of the model of geodesic oscillations of Keplerian disks modified for the epicyclic oscillations of spinning test particles orbiting Kerr BHs. We show that the modified geodesic models of QPOs can explain the observational fixed data from the microquasars and AGNs but not for all sources. We perform a successful fitting of the high frequency QPOs models of epicyclic resonance and its variants, relativistic precession and its variants, tidal disruption, as well as warped disc models, and discuss the corresponding constraints of parameters of the model, which are the spin of the test particle, mass and rotation of the BH.

An exact analytical, spherically symmetric, three-parametric wormhole solution has been found in the Einstein-scalar field theory, which covers the several well-known wormhole solutions. It is assumed that the scalar field is massless and depends on the radial coordinate only. The relation between the full contraction of the Ricci tensor and Ricci scalar has been found as RαβRαβ=R2. The derivation of the Einstein field equations have been explicitly shown, and the exact analytical solution has been found in terms of the three constants of integration. The several wormhole solutions have been extracted for the specific values of the parameters. In order to explore the physical meaning of the integration constants, the solution has been compared with the previously obtained results. The curvature scalar has been determined for all particular solutions. Finally, it is shown that the general solution describes naked singularity characterized by the mass, the scalar quantity and the throat.

Abstract In this letter a new Lagrangian variational principle is proved to hold for the Einstein field equations, in which the independent variational tensor field is identified with the Ricci curvature tensor $$R^{\mu \nu }$$ R μ ν rather than the metric tensor $$g_{\mu \nu }$$ g μ ν . The corresponding Lagrangian function, denoted as $$L_{R}$$ L R , is realized by a polynomial expression of the Ricci 4-scalar $$R\equiv g_{\mu \nu }R^{\mu \nu }$$ R ≡ g μ ν R μ ν and of the quadratic curvature 4-scalar $$\rho \equiv R^{\mu \nu }R_{\mu \nu }$$ ρ ≡ R μ ν R μ ν . The Lagrangian variational principle applies both to vacuum and non-vacuum cases and for its validity it demands a non-vanishing, and actually also positive, cosmological constant $$\Lambda >0$$ Λ > 0 . Then, by implementing the deDonder–Weyl formalism, the physical conditions for the existence of a manifestly-covariant Hamiltonian structure associated with such a Lagrangian formulation are investigated. As a consequence, it is proved that the Ricci tensor can obey a Hamiltonian dynamics which is consistent with the solutions predicted by the Einstein field equations.

Already in the cornerstone works on astrophysical black holes published as early as in the 1970s, Ruffini and collaborators have revealed the potential importance of an intricate interaction between the effects of strong gravitational and electromagnetic fields. Close to the event horizon of the black hole, magnetic and electric lines of force become distorted and dragged even in a purely electro-vacuum system. Moreover, as the plasma effects inevitably arise in any astrophysically realistic environment, particles of different electric charges can separate from each other, become accelerated away from the black hole or accreted onto it, and contribute to the net electric charge of the black hole. From the point of principle, the case of super-strong magnetic fields is of particular interest, as the electromagnetic field can act as a source of gravity and influence spacetime geometry. In a brief celebratory note, we revisit aspects of rotation and charge within the framework of exact (asymptotically non-flat) solutions of mutually coupled Einstein–Maxwell equations that describe magnetized, rotating black holes.

Abstract Extremely compact objects trap gravitational waves or neutrinos, assumed to move along null geodesics in the trapping regions. The trapping of neutrinos was extensively studied for spherically symmetric extremely compact objects constructed under the simplest approximation of the uniform energy density distribution, with radius located under the photosphere of the external spacetime; in addition, uniform emissivity distribution of neutrinos was assumed in these studies. Here we extend the studies of the neutrino trapping for the case of the extremely compact Tolman VII objects representing the simplest generalization of the internal Schwarzschild solution with uniform distribution of the energy density, and the correspondingly related distribution of the neutrino emissivity that is thus again proportional to the energy density; radius of such extremely compact objects can overcome the photosphere of the external Schwarzschild spacetime. In dependence on the parameters of the Tolman VII spacetimes, we determine the “local” and “global” coefficients of efficiency of the trapping and demonstrate that the role of the trapping is significantly stronger than in the internal Schwarzschild spacetimes. Our results indicate possible influence of the neutrino trapping in cooling of neutron stars.

Abstract Extremely compact objects containing a region of trapped null geodesics could be of astrophysical relevance due to trapping of neutrinos with consequent impact on cooling processes or trapping of gravitational waves. These objects have previously been studied under the assumption of spherical symmetry. In the present paper, we consider a simple generalization by studying trapping of null geodesics in the framework of the Hartle–Thorne slow-rotation approximation taken to first order in the angular velocity, and considering a uniform-density object with uniform emissivity for the null geodesics. We calculate effective potentials and escape cones for the null geodesics and how they depend on the parameters of the spacetimes, and also calculate the “local” and “global” coefficients of efficiency for the trapping. We demonstrate that due to the rotation the trapping efficiency is different for co-rotating and retrograde null geodesics, and that trapping can occur even for $$R>3GM/c^2$$ R > 3 G M / c 2 , contrary to what happens in the absence of rotation.

Abstract Circular motion of test particles in the equatorial plane of the Kerr–Newman–de Sitter (KNdS) spacetime is analyzed for both black-hole and naked-singularity backgrounds. We present relations for specific energy, specific angular momentum and Keplerian angular velocity of a particle on equatorial circular orbit, and discuss criteria for the existence of such orbits giving limits on spacetime parameters. The orientation of motion along circular orbits is discussed from the point of view of locally non-rotating frames. Finally, we discuss the stability of circular motion against radial perturbations and determine limits on the existence of stable circular orbits, as well as the structure of stability regions in KNdS spacetimes.

We perform a successful fitting of the high frequency (HF) QPOs observed in these microquasars, under assumption of MOG BHs, for epicyclic resonance and its variants, relativistic precession and its variants, tidal disruption, as well as warped disc models and discuss the corresponding constraints of parameters of the model, which are the mass and spin and parameter $$\alpha $$ α of the BH.

Abstract Considering the regular Bardeen black hole spacetimes, we test the observational effects of the general relativistic solutions coupled to non-linear electrodynamics (NED) by studying the photon motion in the effective geometry governed by the spacetime geometry and the NED Lagrangian. We focus our attention to the observationally important case of profiled spectral lines generated by rings radiating in a fixed frequency and orbiting the black hole along circular geodesics of the Bardeen spacetime. Such profiled spectral lines are observed in active galactic nuclei and in microquasars, giving sufficient data for the test of regular black holes. We expect that such radiating rings could arise around the Galaxy central supermassive black hole SgrA*, and the related profiled spectral lines could give important additional information to those obtained by direct observations due to the Event Horizon (GRAVITY) Telescope. We demonstrate that the profiled spectral lines of the radiating rings predict strong signatures of the NED effects on the photon motion – namely the frequency shift to the red edge of the spectrum, and narrowing of the profile, by more than one order in comparison with the case of the profiles generated purely by the spacetime geometry, for all values of the magnetic charge and the inclination angle of the observer. The specific flux is substantially suppressed and for extended Keplerian disks even the shape of the profiled line is significantly modified due to the NED effect.

Abstract Using the gravitational decoupling by the minimal geometric deformation approach, we build an anisotropic version of the well-known Tolman VII solution, determining an exact and physically acceptable interior two-fluid solution that can represent behavior of compact objects. Comparison of the effective density and density of the perfect fluid is demonstrated explicitly. We show that the radial and tangential pressure are different in magnitude giving thus the anisotropy of the modified Tolman VII solution. The dependence of the anisotropy on the coupling constant is also shown.

Abstract We study spherically symmetric magnetically charged generic black hole solutions of general relativity coupled to non-linear electrodynamics (NED). For characteristic values of the generic spacetime parameters we give the position of horizons in dependence on the charge parameter, demonstrating separation of the black hole and no-horizon solutions, and possibility of existence of solutions containing three horizons. We show that null, weak and strong energy conditions are violated when the outer horizon is approaching the center. We study effective potentials for photons and massive test particles and location of circular photon orbits (CPO) and innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO). We show that the unstable photon orbit can become stable, leading to the possibility of photon capture which affects on silhouette of the central object. The position of ISCO approaches the horizon with increasing charge parameter q and the energy at ISCO decreases with increasing charge parameter. We investigate this phenomenon and summarize for a variety of the generic spacetime parameters the upper estimate on the spin parameter of the Kerr black which can be mimicked by the generic charged black hole solutions.

Abstract We study the optical properties of the Kehagias–Sfetsos (KS) compact objects, characterized by the “Hořava” parameter $$\omega _{_{KS}}$$ ωKS , in the presence of plasma, considering its homogeneous or power-law density distribution. The strong effects of both “Hořava” parameter $$\omega _{_{KS}}$$ ωKS and plasma on the shadow cast by the KS compact objects are demonstrated. Using the weak field approximation, we investigate the gravitational lensing effect. Strong dependence of the deflection angle of the light on both the “Hořava” and plasma parameter is explicitly shown. The magnification of image source due to the weak gravitational lensing is given for both the homogeneous and inhomogeneous plasma.

Abstract We study behaviour of ionized region of a Keplerian disk orbiting a Schwarzschild black hole immersed in an asymptotically uniform magnetic field. In dependence on the magnetic parameter $${\mathcal {B}}$$ B , and inclination angle $$\theta $$ θ of the disk plane with respect to the magnetic field direction, the charged particles of the ionized disk can enter three regimes: (1) regular oscillatory motion, (2) destruction due to capture by the magnetized black hole, (3) chaotic regime of the motion. In order to study transition between the regular and chaotic type of the charged particle motion, we generate time series of the solution of equations of motion under various conditions, and study them by non-linear (box counting, correlation dimension, Lyapunov exponent, recurrence analysis, machine learning) methods of chaos determination. We demonstrate that the machine learning method appears to be the most efficient in determining the chaotic region of the $$\theta -r$$ θ-r space. We show that the chaotic character of the ionized particle motion increases with the inclination angle. For the inclination angles $$\theta \sim 0$$ θ∼0 whole the ionized internal part of the Keplerian disk is captured by the black hole.

Abstract For the Kerr naked singularity (KNS) spacetimes, we study properties of spherical photon orbits (SPOs) confined to constant Boyer-Lindquist radius r. Some new features of the SPOs are found, having no counterparts in the Kerr black hole (KBH) spacetimes, especially stable orbits that could be pure prograde/retrograde, or with turning point in the azimuthal direction. At $$r>1$$ r>1 ($$r 0$$ E>0 ($$\mathcal{E}< 0$$ E 0$$ E>0 . It is shown that the polar SPOs can exist only in the spacetimes with dimensionless spin $$a < 1.7996$$ a

Rotating black holes (BHs) are likely the largest energy reservoirs in the Universe as predicted by BH thermodynamics, while cosmic rays (CRs) are the most energetic among particles detected on Earth. Magnetic fields surrounding BHs combined with strong gravity effects, thanks to the spacetime symmetries, turn the BHs into powerful accelerators of charged particles. At the same time, in the age of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger astronomy, BHs and their environments have not yet been probed with CR messengers, despite being observed across most of the electromagnetic spectrum, and neutrino and gravitational waves. In this paper, we probe the acceleration capabilities of BHs in 8 galactic X-ray binaries and 25 local active galactic nuclei (AGNs) within 100 Mpc, based on the ultra-efficient regime of the magnetic Penrose process of a BH energy extraction combined with observational data. We find that the maximum energy of the galactic BHs can reach only up to the knee of the CR spectrum, including supermassive BH Sgr A* at the Galactic Center. On the other hand, for supermassive BHs in AGNs, we find that the mean energy of primary CRs is of the order of 1019 eV. It is therefore likely that local supermassive BHs give sufficient contribution to the ankle—a sharp change in the slope of the cosmic ray spectrum around 1018.6 eV energy. We also discuss the energy losses of primary CRs close to the acceleration zones. In the galactic BH cases, it is likely dominated by synchrotron radiation losses.

Abstract We construct the light escape cones of isotropic spot sources of radiation residing in special classes of reference frames in the Kerr–de Sitter (KdS) black hole spacetimes, namely in the fundamental class of ‘non-geodesic’ locally non-rotating reference frames (LNRFs), and two classes of ‘geodesic’ frames, the radial geodesic frames (RGFs), both falling and escaping, and the frames related to the circular geodesic orbits (CGFs). We compare the cones constructed in a given position for the LNRFs, RGFs, and CGFs. We have shown that the photons locally counter-rotating relative to LNRFs with positive impact parameter and negative covariant energy are confined to the ergosphere region. Finally, we demonstrate that the light escaping cones govern the shadows of black holes located in front of a radiating screen, as seen by the observers in the considered frames. For shadows related to distant static observers the LNRFs are relevant.

Abstract We study the motion of current carrying charged string loops in the Reissner–Nordström black hole background combining the gravitational and electromagnetic field. Introducing new electromagnetic interaction between central charge and charged string loop makes the string loop equations of motion to be non-integrable even in the flat spacetime limit, but it can be governed by an effective potential even in the black hole background. We classify different types of the string loop trajectories using effective potential approach, and we compare the innermost stable string loop positions with loci of the charged particle innermost stable orbits. We examine string loop small oscillations around minima of the string loop effective potential, and we plot radial profiles of the string loop oscillation frequencies for both the radial and vertical modes. We construct charged string loop quasi-periodic oscillations model and we compare it with observed data from microquasars GRO 1655-40, XTE 1550-564, and GRS 1915+105. We also study the acceleration of current carrying string loops along the vertical axis and the string loop ejection from RN black hole neighbourhood, taking also into account the electromagnetic interaction.

We present a review of the Penrose process and its modifications in relation to the Kerr black holes and naked singularities (superspinars). We introduce the standard variant of this process, its magnetic version connected with magnetized Kerr black holes or naked singularities, the electric variant related to electrically charged Schwarzschild black holes, and the radiative Penrose process connected with charged particles radiating in the ergosphere of magnetized Kerr black holes or naked singularities. We discuss the astrophysical implications of the variants of the Penrose process, concentrating attention to the extreme regime of the magnetic Penrose process leading to extremely large acceleration of charged particles up to ultra-high energy E∼1022 eV around magnetized supermassive black holes with mass M∼1010M⊙ and magnetic intensity B∼104 G. Similarly high energies can be obtained by the electric Penrose process. The extraordinary case is represented by the radiative Penrose process that can occur only around magnetized Kerr spacetimes but just inside their ergosphere, in contrast to the magnetic Penrose process that can occur in a more extended effective ergosphere determined by the intensity of the electromagnetic interaction. The explanation is simple, as the radiative Penrose process is closely related to radiated photons with negative energy whose existence is limited just to the ergosphere.

Abstract The study of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of X-ray flux observed in the stellar-mass black hole binaries can provide a powerful tool for testing of the phenomena occurring in the strong gravity regime. Magnetized versions of the standard geodesic models of QPOs can explain the observationally fixed data from the three microquasars. We perform a successful fitting of the HF QPOs observed for three microquasars, GRS 1915+105, XTE 1550-564 and GRO 1655-40, containing black holes, for magnetized versions of both epicyclic resonance and relativistic precession models and discuss the corresponding constraints of parameters of the model, which are the mass and spin of the black hole and the parameter related to the external magnetic field. The estimated magnetic field intensity strongly depends on the type of objects giving the observed HF QPOs. It can be as small as $$10^{-5}$$ 10 - 5 G if electron oscillatory motion is relevant, but it can be by many orders higher for protons or ions (0.02–1 G), or even higher for charged dust or such exotic objects as lighting balls, etc. On the other hand, if we know by any means the magnetic field intensity, our model implies strong limit on the character of the oscillating matter, namely its specific charge.

Abstract We study the general motion of photons in the Kerr–de Sitter black-hole and naked singularity spacetimes. The motion is governed by the impact parameters X, related to the axial symmetry of the spacetime, and q, related to its hidden symmetry. Appropriate ‘effective potentials’ governing the latitudinal and radial motion are introduced and their behavior is examined by the ‘Chinese boxes’ technique giving regions allowed for the motion in terms of the impact parameters. Restrictions on the impact parameters X and q are established in dependence on the spacetime parameters $$M, \Lambda , a$$ M , Λ , a . The motion can be of orbital type (crossing the equatorial plane, $$q>0$$ q > 0 ) and vortical type (tied above or below the equatorial plane, $$q

We study epicyclic oscillatory motion along circular geodesics of the Simpson–Visser meta-geometry describing in a unique way regular black-bounce black holes and reflection-symmetric wormholes by using a length parameter l. We give the frequencies of the orbital and epicyclic motion in a Keplerian disc with inner edge at the innermost circular geodesic located above the black hole outer horizon or on the our side of the wormhole. We use these frequencies in the epicyclic resonance version of the so-called geodesic models of high-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HF QPOs) observed in microquasars and around supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei to test the ability of this meta-geometry to improve the fitting of HF QPOs observational data from the surrounding of supermassive black holes. We demonstrate that this is really possible for wormholes with sufficiently high length parameter l.

For the spherically symmetric Stephani cosmological model with an accelerated expansion, we investigate the main scenarios of the test particle and photon motion. We show that a comoving observer sees an appropriate picture. In the case of purely radial motion, the radial velocity decreases slightly with time due to the universe expansion. Both particles and photons spiral out of the center when the radial coordinate is constant. In the case of the motion with arbitrary initial velocity, the observable radial distance to the test particle can increase under negative observable radial velocity.

Abstract Conformal gravity can elegantly solve the problem of spacetime singularities present in Einstein’s gravity. For every physical spacetime, there is an infinite family of conformally equivalent singularity-free metrics. In the unbroken phase, every non-singular metric is equivalent and can be used to infer the physical properties of the spacetime. In the broken phase, a Higgs-like mechanism should select a certain vacuum, which thus becomes the physical one. However, in the absence of the complete theoretical framework we do not know how to select the right vacuum. In this paper, we study the energy conditions of non-singular black hole spacetimes obtained in conformal gravity assuming they are solutions of Einstein’s gravity with an effective energy-momentum tensor. We check whether such conditions can be helpful to select the vacuum of the broken phase.

We present a review of the influence of cosmic repulsion and external magnetic fields on accretion disks rotating around rotating black holes and on jets associated with these rotating configurations. We consider both geometrically thin and thick disks. We show that the vacuum energy represented by the relic cosmological constant strongly limits extension of the accretion disks that is for supermassive black holes comparable to extension of largest galaxies, and supports collimation of jets at large distances from the black hole. We further demonstrate that an external magnetic field crucially influences the fate of ionized Keplerian disks causing creation of winds and jets, enabling simultaneously acceleration of ultra-high energy particles with energy up to 10 21 eV around supermassive black holes with M ∼ 10 10 M ⊙ surrounded by sufficiently strong magnetic field with B ∼ 10 4 G. We also show that the external magnetic fields enable existence of “levitating” off-equatorial clouds or tori, along with the standard equatorial toroidal structures, if these carry a non-vanishing, appropriately distributed electric charge.

Properties of charged particle motion in the field of magnetized black holes (BHs) imply four possible regimes of behavior of ionized Keplerian disks: survival in regular epicyclic motion, transformation into chaotic toroidal state, destruction due to fall into the BHs, destruction due to escape along magnetic field lines (escape to infinity for disks orbiting Kerr BHs). The regime of the epicyclic motion influenced by very weak magnetic fields can be related to the observed high-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations. In the case of very strong magnetic fields particles escaping to infinity could form UHECR due to extremely efficient magnetic Penrose process − protons with energy E > 10 21 eV can be accelerated by supermassive black holes with M ∼ 10 10 M ⊙ immersed in magnetic field with B ∼ 10 4 Gs.
