1. Mechanical losses and stability performance of NEXCERA in ultra-stable laser cavities

Abstract

NEXCERA has been recently introduced as novel ceramic-based material for spacers of ultra-stable laser cavities with a zero-crossing coefficient of thermal expansion at room temperature. Brownian thermal noise currently limits the performance of these cavities, and the mechanical loss factor, a critical parameter in estimating this noise, remains unknown for NEXCERA. In this work, we investigate the mechanical loss factor of NEXCERA N117B at room temperature across different resonance frequencies using the Gentle Nodal Suspension technique. We measure a promising loss factor of $\phi = 1.89\times 10^{-5}$, indicating NEXCERA's potential for ultra-stable laser cavities. Based on these results, we calculate the thermal noise when NEXCERA is used as a spacer and compare its overall performance as a spacer material to widely used materials such as ULE and Zerodur, considering various substrate materials. Abstract

A powerful and robust control system is a crucial, often neglected, pillar of any modern, complex physics experiment that requires the management of a multitude of different devices and their precise time synchronisation. The AEgIS collaboration presents CIRCUS, a novel, autonomous control system optimised for time-critical experiments such as those at CERN's Antiproton Decelerator and, more broadly, in atomic and quantum physics research. Its setup is based on Sinara/ARTIQ and TALOS, integrating the ALPACA analysis pipeline, the last two developed entirely in AEgIS. It is suitable for strict synchronicity requirements and repeatable, automated operation of experiments, culminating in autonomous parameter optimisation via feedback from real-time data analysis. CIRCUS has been successfully deployed and tested in AEgIS; being experiment-agnostic and released open-source, other experiments can leverage its capabilities.

Abstract

Experiments aimed at searching for variations in the fine-structure constant $\alpha$ are based on spectroscopy of transitions in microscopic bound systems, such as atoms and ions, or resonances in optical cavities. The sensitivities of these systems to variations in $\alpha$ are typically on the order of unity and are fixed for a given system. For heavy atoms, highly charged ions and nuclear transitions, the sensitivity can be increased by benefiting from the relativistic effects and favorable arrangement of quantum states. This article proposes a new method for controlling the sensitivity factor of macroscopic physical systems. Specific concepts of optical cavities with tunable sensitivity to $\alpha$ are described. These systems show qualitatively different properties from those of previous studies of the sensitivity of macroscopic systems to variations in $\alpha$, in which the sensitivity was found to be fixed and fundamentally limited to an order of unity. Although possible experimental constraints attainable with the specific optical cavity arrangements proposed in this article do not yet exceed the present best constraints on $\alpha$ variations, this work paves the way for developing new approaches to searching for variations in the fundamental constants of physics.

5. Photoionization cross sections of ultracold $^{88}$Sr in $^1$P$_1$ and $^3$S$_1$ states at 390 nm and the resulting blue-detuned magic wavelength optical lattice clock constraints

Abstract

We present the measurements of the photoionisation cross sections of the excited $^1$P$_1$ and $^3$S$_1$ states of ultracold $^{88}$Sr atoms at 389.889 nm wavelength, which is the magic wavelength of the $^{1}$S$_{0}$-${}^{3}$P${}_{0}$ clock transition. The photoionisation cross section of the $^1$P$_1$ state is determined from the measured ionisation rates of $^{88}$Sr in the magneto-optical trap in the $^1$P$_1$ state to be 2.20(50)$\times$10$^{-20}$ m$^2$, while the photoionisation cross section of $^{88}$Sr in the $^3$S$_1$ state is inferred from the photoionisation-induced reduction in the number of atoms transferred through the $^3\text{S}_1$ state in an operating optical lattice clock to be $1.38(66)\times$10$^{-18}$ m$^2$. Furthermore, the resulting limitations of employing a blue-detuned magic wavelength optical lattice in strontium optical lattice clocks are evaluated. We estimated photoionisation induced loss rates of atoms at 389.889 nm wavelength under typical experimental conditions and made several suggestions on how to mitigate these losses. In particular, the large photoionisation induced losses for the $^3$S$_1$ state would make the use of the $^3$S$_1$ state in the optical cycle in a blue-detuned optical lattice unfeasible and would instead require the less commonly used $^3$D$_{1,2}$ states during the detection part of the optical clock cycle., Comment: Copyright 2022 Optica Publishing Group. 6. Ultimate stability of active optical frequency standards

Abstract

Active optical frequency standards provide interesting alternatives to their passive counterparts. Particularly, such a clock alone continuously generates highly-stable narrow-line laser radiation. Thus a local oscillator is not required to keep the optical phase during a dead time between interrogations as in passive clocks, but only to boost the active clock's low output power to practically usable levels with the current state of technology. Here we investigate the spectral properties and the stability of active clocks, including homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening effects. We find that for short averaging times the stability is limited by photon shot noise from the limited emitted laser power and at long averaging times by phase diffusion of the laser output. Operational parameters for best long-term stability were identified. Using realistic numbers for an active clock with $^{87}$Sr we find that an optimized stability of $\sigma_y(\tau) \approx 4\times10^{-18}/\sqrt{\tau [\mathrm{s}]}$ is achievable., Comment: 15 pages

Abstract

There has been tremendous progress in the performance of optical frequency standards since the first proposals to carry out precision spectroscopy on trapped, single ions in the 1970s. The estimated fractional frequency uncertainty of today's leading optical standards is currently in the $10^{-18}$ range, approximately two orders of magnitude better than that of the best caesium primary frequency standards. This exceptional accuracy and stability is resulting in a growing number of research groups developing optical clocks. While good review papers covering the topic already exist, more practical guidelines are needed as a complement. The purpose of this document is therefore to provide technical guidance for researchers starting in the field of optical clocks. The target audience includes national metrology institutes (NMIs) wanting to set up optical clocks (or subsystems thereof) and PhD students and postdocs entering the field. Another potential audience is academic groups with experience in atomic physics and atom or ion trapping, but with less experience of time and frequency metrology and optical clock requirements. These guidelines have arisen from the scope of the EMPIR project "Optical clocks with $1 \times 10^{-18}$ uncertainty" (OC18). Therefore, the examples are from European laboratories even though similar work is carried out all over the world. The goal of OC18 was to push the development of optical clocks by improving each of the necessary subsystems: ultrastable lasers, neutral-atom and single-ion traps, and interrogation techniques. Abstract

We present a two-species laser cooling apparatus capable of simultaneously collecting Rb and Hg atomic gases into a magneto-optical trap (MOT). The atomic sources, laser system, and vacuum set-up are described. While there is a loss of Rb atoms in the MOT due to photoionization by the Hg cooling laser, we show that it does not prevent simultaneous trapping of Rb and Hg. 9. Searching for topological defect dark matter with optical atomic clocks

Abstract

The total mass density of the Universe appears to be dominated by dark matter. However, beyond its gravitational interactions at the galactic scale, little is known about its nature. Extensions of the quantum electrodynamics Lagrangian with dark-matter coupling terms may result in changes to Standard Model parameters. Recently, it was proposed that a network of atomic clocks could be used to search for transient signals of a hypothetical dark matter in the form of stable topological defects. The clocks become desynchronized when a dark-matter object sweeps through the network. This pioneering approach, which is applicable only for distant clocks, is limited by the quality of the fibre links. Here, we present an alternative experimental approach that is applicable to both closely spaced and distant optical atomic clocks and benefits from their individual susceptibilities to dark matter, hence not requiring fibre links. We explore a new dimension of astrophysical observations by constraining the strength of atomic coupling to the hypothetical dark-matter cosmic objects. Our experimental constraint exceeds the previous limits; in fact, it not only reaches the ultimate level expected to be achievable with a constellation of GPS atomic clocks but also has a large potential for improvement.

Abstract

We report a stability below $7\times 10{}^{-17}$ of two independent optical lattice clocks operating with bosonic ${}^{88}$Sr isotope. The value (429228066418008.3(1.9)${}_{syst}$(0.9)${}_{stat}$~Hz) of the absolute frequency of the ${}^{1}S_{0}$ - ${}^{3}P_{0}$ transition was measured with an optical frequency comb referenced to the local representation of the UTC by the 330 km-long stabilized fibre optical link. The result was verified by series of measurements on two independent optical lattice clocks and agrees with recommendation of Bureau International des Poids et Mesures.

Abstract

The AEg̅IS collaboration at CERN’s AD produces antihydrogen atoms in the form of a pulsed, isotropic source with a precisely defined formation time. AEg̅IS has recently undergone major upgrades to fully benefit from the increased number of colder antiprotons provided by the new ELENA decelerator and to move toward forming a horizontal beam to directly investigate the influence of gravity on the H̅ atoms, thereby probing the Weak Equivalence Principle for antimatter. This contribution gives an overview of these upgrades as well as subsequent results from the first beam times with ELENA.

Abstract

We report the absolute frequency measurements of rubidium 5S-7S two-photon transitions with a cw laser digitally locked to an atomic transition and referenced to an optical frequency comb. The narrow, two-photon transition, 5S-7S (760 nm) insensitive to first order in a magnetic field, is a promising candidate for frequency reference. Abstract

We describe effects of matter-wave interference of spinor states in the $^{87}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. The components of the F=2 manifold are populated by forced Majorana transitions and then fall freely due to gravity in an applied magnetic field. Weak inhomogeneities of the magnetic field, present in the experiment, impose relative velocities onto different $m_F$ components, which show up as interference patterns upon measurement of atomic density distributions with a Stern-Gerlach imaging method. We show that interference effects may appear in experiments even if gradients of the magnetic field components are eliminated but higher order inhomogeneity is present and the duration of the interaction is long enough. In particular, we show that the resulting matter-wave interference patterns can mimic spontaneous pattern formation in the quantum gas., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, version accepted in Phys. Rev. A

15. Observation and cancellation of the dc Stark shift in strontium optical lattice clocks

Abstract

We report on the observation of a dc Stark frequency shift at the $10^{-13}$ level by comparing two strontium optical lattice clocks. This frequency shift arises from the presence of electric charges trapped on dielectric surfaces placed under vacuum close to the atomic sample. We show that these charges can be eliminated by shining UV light on the dielectric surfaces, and characterize the residual dc Stark frequency shift on the clock transition at the $10^{-18}$ level by applying an external electric field. This study shows that the dc Stark shift can play an important role in the accuracy budget of lattice clocks, and should be duly taken into account.

Abstract

We present a comprehensive study of the frequency shifts associated with the lattice potential for a Sr lattice clock. By comparing two such clocks with a frequency stability reaching $5\times 10^{-17}$ after a one hour integration time, and varying the lattice depth up to $U_0=900 \, E_r$ with $E_r$ being the recoil energy, we evaluate lattice related shifts with an unprecedented accuracy. We put the first experimental upper bound on the recently predicted frequency shift due to the magnetic dipole (M1) and electric quadrupole (E2) interactions. This upper bound is significantly smaller than the theoretical upper limit. We also give a new upper limit on the effect of hyperpolarizability with an improvement by more than one order of magnitude. Finally, we report the first observation of the vector and tensor shifts in a lattice clock. Combining these measurements, we show that all known lattice related perturbation will not affect the clock accuracy down to the $10^{-17}$ level, even for very deep lattices, up to $U_0=150\,E_r$.

Abstract

One important factor which determines efficiency of loading cold atoms into an optical dipole trap from a magneto-optical trap is the distance between the trap centers. By studying this efficiency for various optical trap depths (2--110 mK) we find that for optimum dipole trap loading, longitudinal displacements up to 15 mm are necessary. An explanation for this observation is presented and compared with other work and a simple analytical formula is derived for the optimum distance between the trap centers., Comment: 6 figures. Phys. Abstract

We report on cw measurements of probe beam absorption and four-wave-mixing spectra in a $^{85}$Rb magneto-optical trap taken while the trap is in operation. The trapping beams are used as pump light. We concentrate on the central feature of the spectra at small pump-probe detuning and attribute its narrow resonant structures to the superposition of Raman transitions between light-shifted sublevels of the ground atomic state and to atomic recoil processes. These two contributions have different dependencies on trap parameters and we show that the former is inhomogeneously broadened. The strong dependence of the spectra on the probe-beam polarization indicates the existence of large optical anisotropy of the cold-atom sample, which is attributed to the recoil effects. We point out that the recoil-induced resonances can be isolated from other contributions, making pump-probe spectroscopy a highly sensitive diagnostic tool for atoms in a working MOT., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

There has been tremendous progress in the performance of optical frequency standards since the first proposals to carry out precision spectroscopy on trapped, single ions in the 1970s. The estimated fractional frequency uncertainty of today's leading optical standards is currently in the 10−18 range, approximately two orders of magnitude better than that of the best caesium primary frequency standards. This exceptional accuracy and stability is resulting in a growing number of research groups developing optical clocks. While good review papers covering the topic already exist, more practical guidelines are needed as a complement. The purpose of this document is therefore to provide technical guidance for researchers starting in the field of optical clocks. The target audience includes national metrology institutes (NMIs) wanting to set up optical clocks (or subsystems thereof) and PhD students and postdocs entering the field. Another potential audience is academic groups with experience in atomic physics and atom or ion trapping, but with less experience of time and frequency metrology and optical clock requirements. These guidelines have arisen from the scope of the EMPIR project "Optical clocks with 1×10−18 uncertainty" (OC18). Therefore, the examples are from European laboratories even though similar work is carried out all over the world. The goal of OC18 was to push the development of optical clocks by improving each of the necessary subsystems: ultrastable lasers, neutral-atom and single-ion traps, and interrogation techniques. Two optical lattice clocks operated on the transition 1S0-3P0 of the 87Sr atom are now operational at the LNE-SYRTE laboratory, their comparison aims at demonstrating that no systematic effect has been overlooked in their respective accuracy budgets. In this proceeding we focus only on trapping effects, we discuss technical aspects of the calibration of the lattice induced light shifts, and we show the observation of the second order light shift. Abstract

The remote synchronization of a Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) station with a “virtual” atomic clock delivered via an optical fiber is described. The time and frequency signals are provided from UTC(AOS) laboratory located at a distance of 345 kilometers from the VLBI station. Evaluation of the remote synchronization carried out by Joint Institute for VLBI ERIC is presented. To our best knowledge, this is the first operational fiber-optic link synchronizing VLBI observations.
