Abstract

The energy crop sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is raising considerable interest as a source of either fermentable free sugars or lignocellulosic feedstock with the potential to produce fuel, food, feed and a variety of other products. Sweet sorghum is a C4 plant with many potential advantages, including high water, nitrogen and radiation use efficiency, broad agro-ecological adaptation as well as a rich genetic diversity for useful traits. For developing countries sweet sorghum provides opportunities for the simultaneous production of food and bioenergy (e.g. bio-ethanol), thereby contributing to improved food security as well as increased access to affordable and renewable energy sources. In temperate regions (e.g. in Europe) sweet sorghum is seen as promising crop for the production of raw material for 2nd generation bio-ethanol. The project SWEETFUEL (Sweet Sorghum: An alternative energy crop) is supported by the European Commission in the 7th Framework Programme to exploit the advantages of sweet sorghum as potential energy crop for bio-ethanol production. Thereby, the main objective of SWEETFUEL is to optimize yields in temperate and semi-arid regions by genetic enhancement and the improvement of cultural and harvest practices.

16. Indirect selection alternatives to improve yielding ability across environments in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench)

Abstract

Sorghum growing areas worldwide are normally under highly unpredictable rainfall patterns requiring the breeder to select genotypes which are both water responsive and drought resistance. The efficiency of selection of such traits depends primarily on the environment(s) involved and proper choice of selection criteria. Therefore, the main objective was to evaluate potential selection criteria in eight environments for selection of superior genotypes across a wide range of environments. Two hundred S$\sb1$ families from two sorghum populations (TP24D and KP9B) were evaluated in four dryland locations (Mead, NE; Hesston, Garden City, and Parsons, KS) during two years (1987 and 1988). Predicted response to selection and predicted correlated response to selection were estimated and the relative efficiency was calculated for each selection criterion. The relative efficiency of indirect selection criteria for each single environment was low but was improved when yields from the best (B), intermediate (I), and the worst (W) environments were combined to estimate mean productivity (MBIW) and rank summation (RBIW). The relative efficiencies of the stability parameters (regression coefficient, b and principal component, PC), as indirect selection criteria were low. However, their relative efficiencies increased substantially when mean yield over all was included along with a stability parameter in selection indices SIBYLD (includes b values and mean yield) and SIAMYLD (includes PC values and mean yield). Their relative efficiency were equal or higher than MBIW and RBIW which required fewer environments. Seed number (SDNB) and seed size (SDSZ) yield component analysis indicated that SDNB was the most limiting factor under stress environments, and that their relative efficiencies as indirect selection criteria were low. Abstract

Background. Bioactive peptides derived from food proteins have been the subject of considerable interest in recent years. Therefore, the present study aimed to evaluate the nutraceutical properties (antioxidant, antihypertensive, and antidiabetic activities) of bioactive peptides encrypted in seed storage proteins of Moringa oleifera using in vitro gastrointestinal digestion. Materials and methods. Seeds were ground and sieved. Next, the flour was defatted, washed, and dried. Seed storage proteins were obtained from moreinga seed flour using different solvents. Total proteins were extracted with sodium borato, centrifuged, and precipitated. Finally, hydrolysates were obtained with pepsin, trypsin, and chymotrypsin. The hydrolysates were fractionated by ultrafiltration with 10 and 3 kDa membranes. Results. Based on the obtained results, total globulin hydrolysate possessed a high percentage of angiotensinconverting enzyme inhibition (79.51 ±6.89%) and a-amylase inhibition activity (61.19 ±2.93%). On the other hand, the fraction F < 3 kDa had good antioxidant activity (290.66 ±26.9 µM). Conclusion. This study suggests that total globulin hydrolysates and F < 3 kDa had excellent in vitro nutraceutical potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
