The covalent functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with luminescent oxygen defects increases their brightness and enables their application as optical biosensors or fluorescent probes for in-vivo imaging in the second-biological window (NIR-II). However, obtaining luminescent defects with high brightness is challenging with the current functionalization methods due to a restricted window of reaction conditions or the necessity for controlled irradiation with ultraviolet light. Here we report a method for introducing luminescent oxygen defects via a Fenton-like reaction that uses benign and inexpensive chemicals without light irradiation. (6,5) SWNTs in aqueous dispersion functionalized with this method show bright $E_{11}$* emission (1105 nm) with 3.2-times higher peak intensities than the pristine $E_{11}$ emission and a reproducible photoluminescence quantum yield of 3%. The functionalization can be performed within a wide range of reaction parameters and even with unsorted nanotube raw material at high concentrations (100 mg/L), giving access to large amounts of brightly luminescent SWNTs. We further find that the introduced oxygen defects rearrange under light irradiation, which gives additional insights into the structure and dynamics of oxygen defects. Finally, the functionalization of ultra-short SWNTs with oxygen defects also enables high photoluminescence quantum yields and their excellent emission properties are retained after surfactant exchange with biocompatible pegylated phospholipids or single-stranded DNA to make them suitable for in-vivo NIR-II imaging and dopamine sensing.

Oxygen defects in semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are localized disruptions in the carbon lattice caused by the formation of epoxy or ether groups, commonly through wet-chemical reactions. The associated modifications of the electronic structure can result in luminescent states with emission energies below those of pristine SWCNTs in the near-infrared range, which makes them promising candidates for applications in biosensing and as single-photon emitters. Here, we demonstrate the controlled introduction of luminescent oxygen defects into networks of monochiral (6,5) SWCNTs using a solid-state photocatalytic approach. UV irradiation of SWCNTs on the photoreactive surfaces of the transition metal oxides TiOx and ZnOx in the presence of trace amounts of water and oxygen results in the creation of reactive oxygen species that initiate radical reactions with the carbon lattice and the formation of oxygen defects. The created ether-d and epoxide-l defect configurations give rise to two distinct red-shifted emissive features. The chemical and dielectric properties of the photoactive oxides influence the final defect emission properties, with oxygen-functionalized SWCNTs on TiOx substrates being brighter than those on ZnOx or pristine SWCNTs on glass. The photoinduced functionalization of nanotubes is further employed to create lateral patterns of oxygen defects in (6,5) SWCNT networks with micrometer resolution and thus spatially controlled defect emission.

Inorganic pyrophosphate is a key molecule in many biological processes from DNA synthesis to cell metabolism. Here we introduce sp$^{3}$-functionalized (6,5) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with red-shifted defect emission as near-infrared luminescent probes for the optical detection and quantification of inorganic pyrophosphate. The sensing scheme is based on the immobilization of Cu$^{2+}$ ions on the SWNT surface promoted by coordination to covalently attached aryl alkyne groups and a triazole complex. The presence of Cu$^{2+}$ ions on the SWNT surface causes fluorescence quenching via photoinduced electron transfer, which is reversed by copper-complexing analytes such as pyrophosphate. The differences in the fluorescence response of sp$^{3}$-defect to pristine nanotube emission enables reproducible ratiometric measurements in a wide concentration window. Biocompatible, phospholipid-polyethylene glycol-coated SWNTs with such sp$^{3}$ defects are employed for the detection of pyrophosphate in cell lysate and for monitoring the progress of DNA synthesis in a polymerase chain reaction. This robust ratiometric and near-infrared luminescent probe for pyrophosphate may serve as a starting point for the rational design of nanotube-based biosensors.

Polaritons, formed as a result of strong hybridization of matter with light, are promising for important applications including organic solar cells, optical logic gates, and qubits. Owing to large binding energies of Frenkel excitons (matter), strong matter-light coupling phenomena are possible at room temperature, high exciton densities, and even with low-quality-factor microcavities. In such cases, due to polaritons' high degree of delocalization, simultaneous effects from dark excitons and hot electrons may affect performance of potential devices. Their understanding, therefore, is of paramount importance, but their disentanglement in optical spectroscopy, however, thus far remained unattainable. Here, we overcome this challenge by careful and systematic analysis of transient polaritonic spectra, supported by analytical models. In doing so, we conclude that dark excitons affect the strength of exciton-photon coupling and manifest themselves as Fano-like polaritonic gain-loss spectra. Free electrons add additional loss component to and imprint a two-temperature dynamics on the polaritonic response. The developed general methodology can be applied to a variety of other microcavity structures. Our findings are significant for distinguishing polaritons and other excitations in studies of polariton-electron and plasmon-electron coupling phenomena as well as photonic control over photophysical and photochemical processes., Comment: 31 pages, 4 figures

This guide provides a detailed step-by-step procedure for the dispersion of (6,5) single-walled carbon nanotubes by shear force mixing with the conjugated polymer PFO-BPy in organic solvents. All processes presented here were developed in the Zaumseil group at Heidelberg University since 2015 and represent best practices to the best of our knowledge. In addition to the detailed instructions, we discuss potential pitfalls and problems, that we have encountered over eight years of operation and show how to solve them. This also includes a detailed description of how to maintain and service a shear force mixer to ensure long operation lifetime. Finally, we show how to expand our process to the dispersion other nanotube chiralities in electronic-grade quality and how to treat dispersions for subsequent processing (e.g., thin film deposition or functionalization).

The covalent functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with luminescent quantum defects enables their application as near-infrared single-photon sources, as optical sensors, and for in-vivo tissue imaging. Tuning the emission wavelength and defect density are crucial for these applications. While the former can be controlled by different synthetic protocols and is easily measured, defect densities are still determined as relative rather than absolute values, limiting the comparability between different nanotube batches and chiralities. Here, we present an absolute and unified quantification metric for the defect density in SWCNT samples based on Raman spectroscopy. It is applicable to a range of small-diameter nanotubes and for arbitrary laser wavelengths. We observe a clear inverse correlation of the D/G$^{+}$ ratio increase with nanotube diameter, indicating that curvature effects contribute significantly to the defect-activation of Raman modes. Correlation of intermediate frequency modes with defect densities further corroborates their activation by defects and provides additional quantitative metrics for the characterization of functionalized SWCNTs.

Near-infrared electroluminescence from carbon-based emitters, especially in the second biological window (NIR-II) or at telecommunication wavelengths, is difficult to achieve. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have been proposed as a possible solution due to their tunable and narrowband emission in the near-infrared and high charge carrier mobilities. Furthermore, the covalent functionalization of SWCNTs with a controlled number of luminescent sp$^{3}$ defects leads to even more red-shifted photoluminescence with enhanced quantum yields. Here, we demonstrate that by tailoring the binding configuration of the introduced sp$^{3}$ defects and hence tuning their optical trap depth we can generate emission from polymer-sorted (6,5) and (7,5) nanotubes that is mainly occurring in the telecommunication O-band (1260-1360 nm). Networks of these functionalized nanotubes are integrated in ambipolar, light-emitting field-effect transistors to yield the corresponding narrowband near-infrared electroluminescence. Further investigation of the current and carrier density-dependent electro- and photoluminescence spectra enable insights into the impact of different sp$^{3}$ defects on charge transport in networks of functionalized SWCNTs.

Graphene nanoribbons are one-dimensional stripes of graphene with width- and edge-structure-dependent electronic properties. They can be synthesized bottom-up in solution to obtain precise ribbon geometries. Here we investigate the optical properties of solution-synthesized 9-armchair graphene nanoribbons (9-aGNRs) that are stabilized as dispersions in organic solvents and further fractioned by liquid cascade centrifugation (LCC). Absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy reveal two near-infrared absorption and emission peaks whose ratios depend on the LCC fraction. Low-temperature single-nanoribbon photoluminescence spectra suggest the presence of two different nanoribbon species. Based on density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations, the lowest energy transition can be assigned to pristine 9-aGNRs, while 9-aGNRs with edge-defects, caused by incomplete graphitization, result in more blue-shifted transitions and higher Raman D/G-mode ratios. Hole doping of 9-aGNR dispersions with the electron acceptor F4TCNQ leads to concentration dependent bleaching and quenching of the main absorption and emission bands and the appearance of redshifted, charge-induced absorption features but no additional emission peaks, thus indicating the formation of polarons instead of the predicted trions (charged excitons) in doped 9-aGNRs.

Their outstanding electrical and optical properties make semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) highly suitable for charge transport and emissive layers in near-infrared optoelectronic devices. However, the luminescence spectra of SWCNT thin films on commonly used glass and Si/SiO2 substrates are often compromised by broadening of the main excitonic emission and unwanted low-energy sidebands. Surface passivation with a commercially available, low dielectric constant, cross-linked bis-benzocyclobutene-based polymer (BCB) enhances the emission properties of SWCNTs to the same level as hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) flakes do. The presence of BCB suppresses sideband emission, especially from the Y1 band, which is attributed to defects introduced by the interaction of the nanotube lattice with oxygen-containing terminal groups of the substrate surface. The facile and reproducible deposition of homogeneous BCB films over large areas combined with their resistance against common solvents and chemicals employed during photolithography make them compatible with standard semiconductor device fabrication. Utilizing this approach, light-emitting (6,5) SWCNT network field-effect transistors are fabricated on BCB-treated glass substrates with excellent electrical characteristics and near-intrinsic electroluminescence. Hence, passivation with BCB is proposed as a standard treatment for substrates used for spectroscopic investigations of and optoelectronic devices with SWCNTs and other low-dimensional emitters.

Trions are charged excitons that form upon optical or electrical excitation of low-dimensional semiconductors in the presence of charge carriers (holes or electrons). Trion emission from semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) occurs in the near-infrared and at lower energies compared to the respective exciton. It can be used as an indicator for the presence of excess charge carriers in SWCNT samples and devices. Both excitons and trions are highly sensitive to the surrounding dielectric medium of the nanotubes, having an impact on their application in optoelectronic devices. Here, the influence of different dielectric materials on exciton and trion emission from electrostatically doped networks of polymer-sorted (6,5) SWCNTs in top-gate field-effect transistors is investigated. The observed differences of trion and exciton emission energies and intensities for hole and electron accumulation cannot be explained with the polarizability or screening characteristics of the different dielectric materials, but they show a clear dependence on the charge trapping properties of the dielectrics. Charge localization (trapping of holes or electrons by the dielectric) reduces exciton quenching, emission blue-shift and trion formation. Based on the observed carrier type and dielectric material dependent variations, the ratio of trion to exciton emission and the exciton blue-shift are not suitable as quantitative metrics for doping levels of carbon nanotubes.

We demonstrate exciton and charged exciton (trion) electroluminescence from frozen p-n junctions in networks of polymer-sorted, semiconducting (6,5) single-walled carbon nanotubes. Electrolyte-gating with an ionic liquid was employed to achieve injection and accumulation of high densities of holes and electrons in the nanotube network at low applied voltages. Static p-n junctions were formed by cooling the devices below the melting point of the ionic liquid while in the ambipolar regime. These frozen junctions showed diode-like rectification and enabled the investigation of electron-hole recombination and near-infrared electroluminescence under controlled conditions. The contributions of exciton and red-shifted trion emission to the electroluminescence spectra were influenced by the initial parameters of the p-n junction formation (balanced or unbalanced) and the applied lateral bias, but did not depend on temperature (30-200 K). The tilted potential profile along the fixed junction and consequently the number of excess carriers within the recombination zone were found to predominantly determine the emission intensity and observed trion to exciton ratio.

The controlled introduction of covalent sp$^{3}$ defects into semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) gives rise to exciton localization and red-shifted near-infrared luminescence. The single-photon emission characteristics of these functionalized SWCNTs make them interesting candidates for electrically driven quantum light sources. However, the impact of sp$^{3}$ defects on the carrier dynamics and charge transport in carbon nanotubes remains an open question. Here, we use ultrafast, time-resolved optical-pump terahertz-probe spectroscopy as a direct and quantitative technique to investigate the microscopic and temperature-dependent charge transport properties of pristine and functionalized (6,5) SWCNTs in dispersions and thin films. We find that sp$^{3}$ functionalization increases charge carrier scattering, thus reducing the intra-nanotube carrier mobility. In combination with electrical measurements of SWCNT network field-effect transistors, these data enable us to distinguish between contributions of intra-nanotube band transport, sp$^{3}$ defect scattering and inter-nanotube carrier hopping to the overall charge transport properties of nanotube networks., Comment: ACS Nano 2022

Strong coupling of excitonic resonances with a cavity gives rise to exciton-polaritons which possess a modified energy landscape compared to the uncoupled emitter. However, due to the femtosecond lifetime of the so-called bright polariton states and transient changes of the cavity reflectivity under excitation, it is challenging to directly measure the polariton excited state dynamics. Here, near-infrared pump-probe spectroscopy is used to investigate the ultrafast dynamics of exciton-polaritons based on strongly-coupled (6,5) single-walled carbon nanotubes in metal-clad microcavities. We present a protocol for fitting the reflectivity-associated response of the cavity using genetic algorithm-assisted transfer matrix simulations. With this approach are able to identify an absorptive exciton-polariton feature in the transient transmission data. This feature appears instantaneously under resonant excitation of the upper polariton but is delayed for off-resonant excitation. The observed transition energy and detuning dependence point toward a direct upper polariton to biexciton transition. Our results provide direct evidence for exciton-polariton intrinsic transitions beyond the bright polariton lifetime in strongly-coupled microcavities.

The functionalization of semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with luminescent sp$^{3}$ defects creates red-shifted emission features in the near-infrared and boosts their photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs). While multiple synthetic routes for the selective introduction of sp$^{3}$ defects have been developed, a convenient metric to precisely quantify the number of defects on a SWCNT lattice is not available. Here, we present a direct and simple quantification protocol based on a linear correlation of the integrated Raman D/G$^{+}$ signal ratios and defect densities as extracted from PLQY measurements. Corroborated by a statistical analysis of single-nanotube emission spectra at cryogenic temperature, this method enables the quantitative evaluation of sp$^{3}$ defect densities in (6,5) SWCNTs with an error of $\pm$ 3 defects per micrometer and the determination of oscillator strengths for different defect types. The developed protocol requires only standard Raman spectroscopy and is independent of the defect configuration, dispersion solvent and nanotube length.

Efficient and controlled charge transport in networks of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes is the basis for their application in electronic devices, especially in field-effect transistors and thermoelectrics. The recent advances in selective growth, purification, and sorting of semiconducting and even monochiral carbon nanotubes have enabled field-effect transistors with high carrier mobilities and on/off current ratios that were impossible a few years ago. They have also allowed researchers to examine the microscopic interplay of parameters such as nanotube length, density, diameter distribution, carrier density, intentional and unintentional defects, dielectric environment, etc., and their impact on the macroscopic charge transport properties in a rational and reproducible manner. This review discusses various models that are considered for charge transport in nanotube networks and the experimental methods to characterize and investigate transport beyond simple conductivity or transistor measurements. Static and dynamic absorption, photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectroscopy, as well as scanning probe techniques (e.g., conductive atomic force microscopy, Kelvin probe force microscopy), and their unique insights in the distribution of charge carriers in a given nanotube network and the resulting current pathways will be introduced. Finally, recommendations for further optimization of nanotube network devices and a list of remaining challenges are provided.

Semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes show extraordinary electronic and optical properties, such as high charge carrier mobilities and diameter-dependent near-infrared photoluminescence. The introduction of sp3 defects in the carbon lattice of these nanotubes creates new electronic states that result in even further red-shifted photoluminescence with longer lifetimes and higher photoluminescence yield. These luminescent defects or organic color centers can be tuned chemically by controlling the precise binding configuration and the electrostatic properties of the attached substituents. This review covers the basic photophysics of luminescent sp3 defects, synthetic methods for their controlled formation and discusses their application as near-infrared single-photon emitters at room temperature, in electroluminescent devices, as versatile optical sensors, and as fluorophores for bioimaging and potential super-resolution microscopy.

The controlled covalent functionalization of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with luminescent sp$^{3}$ defects leads to additional narrow and tunable photoluminescence features in the near-infrared and even enables single-photon emission at room temperature, thus strongly expanding their application potential. However, the successful integration of sp$^{3}$-functionalized SWCNTs in optoelectronic devices with efficient defect state electroluminescence not only requires control over their emission properties but also a detailed understanding of the impact of functionalization on their electrical performance, especially in dense networks. Here, we demonstrate ambipolar, light-emitting field-effect transistors based on networks of pristine and functionalized polymer-sorted (6,5) SWCNTs. We investigate the influence of sp$^{3}$ defects on charge transport by employing electroluminescence and (charge-modulated) photoluminescence spectroscopy combined with temperature-dependent current-voltage measurements. We find that sp$^{3}$-functionalized SWCNTs actively participate in charge transport within the network as mobile carriers efficiently sample the sp$^{3}$ defects, which act as shallow trap states. While both hole and electron mobilities decrease with increasing degree of functionalization, the transistors remain fully operational, showing electroluminescence from the defect states that can be tuned by the defect density., Comment: ACS Nano 2021

As narrow optical bandgap materials, semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are rarely regarded as charge donors in photoinduced charge-transfer (PCT) reactions. However, the unique band structure and unusual exciton dynamics of SWCNTs add more possibilities to the classical PCT mechanism.In this work, we demonstrate PCT from photoexcited semiconducting (6,5) SWCNTs to a wide-bandgap wrapping poly-[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-alt-(6,6')-(2,2'-bipyridine)] (PFO-BPy) via femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. By monitoring the spectral dynamics of the SWCNT polaron, we show that charge transfer from photoexcited SWCNTs to PFO-BPy can be driven not only by the energetically favorable E33 transition but also by the energetically unfavorable E22 excitation under high pump fluence. This unusual PCT from narrow-bandgap SWCNTs toward a wide-bandgap polymer originates from the up-converted high-energy excitonic state (E33 or higher) that is promoted by the Auger recombination of excitons and charge carriers in SWCNTs. These insights provide new pathways for charge separation in SWCNT-based photodetectors and photovoltaic cells.

The functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with luminescent sp$^{3}$ defects has greatly improved their performance in applications such as quantum light sources and bioimaging. Here, we report the covalent functionalization of purified semiconducting SWCNTs with stable organic radicals (perchlorotriphenylmethyl, PTM) carrying a net spin. This model system allows us to use the near-infrared photoluminescence arising from the defect-localized exciton as a highly sensitive probe for the short-range interaction between the PTM radical and the SWCNT. Our results point toward an increased triplet exciton population due to radical-enhanced intersystem crossing, which could provide access to the elusive triplet manifold in SWCNTs. Furthermore, this simple synthetic route to spin-labeled defects could enable magnetic resonance studies complementary to in vivo fluorescence imaging with functionalized SWCNTs and facilitate the scalable fabrication of spintronic devices with magnetically switchable charge transport.

Semiconducting single-walled carbon-nanotubes (SWCNTs) are an interesting material for strong-light matter coupling due to their stable excitons, narrow emission in the near infrared and high charge carrier mobilities. Furthermore, they have emerged as quantum light sources as a result of the controlled introduction of luminescent quantum defects (sp$^{3}$-defects) with red-shifted transitions that enable single-photon emission. The complex photophysics of SWCNTs and overall goal of polariton condensation pose the question of how exciton-polaritons are populated and how it might be optimized. The contributions of possible relaxation processes, i.e., scattering with acoustic phonons, vibrationally assisted scattering, and radiative pumping, are investigated using angle-resolved reflectivity and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements on microcavities with a wide range of detunings. We show that the predominant population mechanism for SWCNT exciton-polaritons in planar microcavities is radiative pumping. Consequently, the limitation of polariton population due to the low photoluminescence quantum yield of nanotubes, can be overcome by luminescent sp$^{3}$ defects. Without changing the polariton branch structure, radiative pumping through these emissive defects leads to an up to 10-fold increase of the polariton population for detunings with a large photon fraction. Thus, the controlled and tunable functionalization of SWCNTs with sp$^{3}$ defects presents a viable route towards bright and efficient polariton devices.

The internal luminescence quantum efficiency ($Q_\mathrm{i}^\mathrm{lum}$) provides an excellent assessment of the optoelectronic quality of semiconductors. To determine $Q_\mathrm{i}^\mathrm{lum}$ of perovskite films from the experimentally accessible external luminescence quantum efficiency ($Q_\mathrm{e}^\mathrm{lum}$) it is essential to account for photon recycling, and this requires knowledge of the photon escape probability ($p_\mathrm{e}$). Here, we establish an analysis procedure based on a curve fitting model that accurately determines $p_\mathrm{e}$ of perovskite films from photoluminescence (PL) spectra measured with a confocal microscope and an integrating sphere setup. We show that scattering-induced outcoupling of initially-trapped PL explains commonly observed red-shifted and broadened PL spectral shapes and leads to $p_\mathrm{e}$ being more than 10% higher in absolute terms compared to earlier assumptions. Applying our model to CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ films with exceptionally high $Q_\mathrm{e}^\mathrm{lum}$ up to 47.4% sets a real benchmark for $Q_\mathrm{i}^\mathrm{lum}$ at $78.0 \pm 0.5\%$, revealing there is beyond a factor of two more scope for reducing non-radiative recombination than previously thought.

Solution-processed networks of semiconducting, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have attracted considerable attention as materials for next-generation electronic devices and circuits. However, the impact of the SWCNT network composition on charge transport on a microscopic level remains an open and complex question. Here, we use charge-modulated absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy to probe exclusively the mobile charge carriers in monochiral (6,5) and mixed SWCNT network field-effect transistors. Ground state bleaching and charge-induced trion absorption features, as well as exciton quenching are observed depending on applied voltage and modulation frequency. Through correlation of the modulated mobile carrier density and the optical response of the nanotubes, we find that charge transport in mixed SWCNT networks depends strongly on the diameter and thus bandgap of the individual species. Mobile charges are preferentially transported by small bandgap SWCNTs especially at low gate voltages, whereas large bandgap species only start to participate at higher carrier concentrations. Our results demonstrate the excellent suitability of modulation spectroscopy to investigate charge transport in nanotube network transistors and highlight the importance of SWCNT network composition for their performance., Comment: ACS Nano 2020

The functionalization of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with sp$^{3}$ defects that act as luminescent exciton traps is a powerful means to enhance their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and to add optical properties. However, the synthetic methods employed to introduce these defects are so far limited to aqueous dispersions of surfactant-coated SWNTs, often with short tube lengths, residual metallic nanotubes and poor film formation properties. In contrast to that, dispersions of polymer-wrapped SWNTs in organic solvents feature unrivaled purity, higher PLQY and are easily processed into thin films for device applications. Here, we introduce a simple and scalable phase-transfer method to solubilize diazonium salts in organic nonhalogenated solvents for the controlled reaction with polymer-wrapped SWNTs to create luminescent aryl defects. Absolute PLQY measurements are applied to reliably quantify the defect-induced brightening. The optimization of defect density and trap depth results in PLQYs of up to 4 % with 90 % of photons emitted through the defect channel. We further reveal the strong impact of initial SWNT quality and length on the relative brightening by sp$^{3}$ defects. The efficient and simple production of large quantities of defect-tailored polymer-sorted SWNTs enables aerosol-jet printing and spin-coating of thin films with bright and nearly reabsorption-free defect emission, which are desired for carbon nanotube-based near-infrared light-emitting devices.

At cryogenic temperature and at the single emitter level, the optical properties of single-wall carbon nanotubes depart drastically from that of a one-dimensional (1D) object. In fact, the (usually unintentional) localization of excitons in local potential wells leads to nearly 0D behaviors such as photon antibunching, spectral diffusion, inhomogeneous broadening, etc. Here, we present an hyperspectral imaging of this exciton self-localization effect at the single nanotube level using a super-resolved optical microscopy approach. We report on the statistical distribution of the traps localization, depth and width. We use a quasi-resonant photoluminescence excitation approach to probe the confined quantum states. Numerical simulations of the quantum states and exciton diffusion show that the excitonic states are deeply modified by the interface disorder inducing a remarkable discretization of the excitonic absorption spectrum and a quenching of the free 1D exciton absorption.

We present theoretical and experimental studies of Schottky diodes that use aligned arrays of single walled carbon nanotubes. A simple physical model, taking into account the basic physics of current rectification, can adequately describe the single-tube and array devices. We show that for as grown array diodes, the rectification ratio, defined by the maximum-to-minimum-current-ratio, is low due to the presence of m-SWNT shunts. These tubes can be eliminated in a single voltage sweep resulting in a high rectification array device. Further analysis also shows that the channel resistance, and not the intrinsic nanotube diode properties, limits the rectification in devices with channel length up to ten micrometer., Comment: Nano Research, 2010, accepted
