1. Broadband Spontaneous Parametric Downconversion in Reconfigurable Poled Linearly-Uncoupled Resonators

Abstract

In this letter, we study spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in a periodically poled structure composed of two linearly uncoupled resonators that are nonlinearly coupled via a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The device does not require dispersion engineering to achieve efficient doubly-resonant SPDC and, unlike the case of a single resonator, one can reconfigure the system to generate photon pairs over a bandwidth of hundreds of nm. We consider the case of SPDC pumped at 775 nm in a periodically poled lithium-niobate (PPLN) device compatible with up-to-date technological platforms. We demonstrate pair generation rates of up to 250 MHz/mW pump power for a single resonance and integrated pair generation rates of up to 100 THz/mW pump power over 170 nm. When properly reconfigured, a single device can efficiently generate over a bandwidth of some 300 nm, covering the S, C, L, and U infrared bands.

Abstract

We show that, in presence of isometries and non-trivial topology, the Einstein--Hilbert action is invariant under certain transformations of the metric which are not diffeomorphisms. These transformations are similar to the higher-form symmetries of field theories with $p$-form fields. In the context of toroidal Kaluza--Klein compactifications, we show that these symmetries give rise to some of the ``hidden symmetries'' (dualities) of the dimensionally-reduced theories., Comment: LaTeX 2e file, 20 pages, no figures

6. Democratic actions with scalar fields: symmetric sigma models, supergravity actions and the effective theory of the type IIB superstring

Abstract

The dualization of the scalar fields of a theory into (d-2)-form potentials preserving all the global symmetries is one of the main problems in the construction of democratic pseudoactions containing simultaneously all the original fields and their duals. We study this problem starting with the simplest cases and we show how it can be solved for scalars parametrizing Riemannian symmetric sigma-models as in maximal and half-maximal supergravities. Then, we use this result to write democratic pseudoactions for theories in which the scalars are non-minimally coupled to (p+1)-form potentials in any dimension. These results include a proposal of democratic pseudoaction for the generic bosonic sector of 4-dimensional maximal and half-maximal ungauged supergravities. Furthermore, we propose a democratic pseudoaction for the bosonic sector of N=2B,d=10 supergravity (the effective action of the type IIB superstring theory) containing two 0-, two 2-, one 4-, two 6- and three 8-forms which is manifestly invariant under global SL(2,R) transformations., Comment: Misprints corrected in text and some equations. 7. Revisiting $\alpha'$ corrections to heterotic two-charge black holes

Abstract

We find solutions of the heterotic string effective action describing the first-order $\alpha'$ corrections to two-charge black holes at finite temperature. Making explicit use of these solutions, we compute the corrections to the thermodynamic quantities: temperature, chemical potentials, mass, charges and entropy. We check that the first law of black hole mechanics is satisfied and that the thermodynamics agrees with the one extracted from the Euclidean on-shell action. Finally, we show that our results are in agreement with the corrections for the thermodynamics recently predicted by Chen, Maldacena and Witten., Comment: 27 pages; v2: citations added

8. $\alpha'$ corrections to 4-dimensional non-extremal stringy black holes

Abstract

We compute the first-order $\alpha'$ corrections to a family of 4-dimensional, 4-charge, non-extremal black hole solutions of Heterotic Supergravity in the case with 3 independent charges. The solutions are fully analytic, reproduce the extremal limit previously found in the literature and, applying T-duality, they transform as expected. If we reduce to the case with a single independent charge we obtain the corrections to four embeddings of the Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole in string theory. We completely characterize the black hole thermodynamics computing the Hawking temperature, Wald entropy, mass, gauge charges and their dual thermodynamic potentials. We verify that all these quantities are related by the first law of extended black hole mechanics and the Smarr formula once we include a potential associated to the dimensionful parameter $\alpha'$ and the scalar charges. We found that the latter are not identified with the poles at infinity of the scalar fields because they receive $\alpha'$ corrections., Comment: 21 pages + appendices, 3 figures

Abstract

Abstract The CMS detector, including its muon system, has been operating at the CERN LHC in increasingly challenging conditions for about 15 years. The muon detector was designed to provide excellent triggering and track reconstruction for muons produced in proton–proton collisons at an instantaneous luminosity ( $$\mathcal {L}$$ L ) of $$1 \times 10^{34}$$ 1 × 10 34 cm $$^{-2}$$ - 2 s $$^{-1}$$ - 1 . During the Run 2 data-taking period (2015–2018), the LHC achieved an instantaneous luminosity of twice its design value, resulting in larger background rates and making the efficient detection of muons more difficult. While some backgrounds result from natural radioactivity, cosmic rays, and interactions of the circulating protons with residual gas in the beam pipe, the dominant source of background hits in the muon system arises from proton–proton interactions themselves. Charged hadrons leaving the calorimeters produce energy deposits in the muon chambers. In addition, high-energy particles interacting in the hadron calorimeter and forward shielding elements generate thermal neutrons, which leak out of the calorimeter and shielding structures, filling the CMS cavern. We describe the method used to measure the background rates in the various muon subsystems. These rates, in conjunction with simulations, can be used to estimate the expected backgrounds in the High-Luminosity LHC. This machine will run for at least 10 years starting in 2029 reaching an instantaneous luminosity of $$\mathcal {L} = 5 \times \text {10}^\text {34}\,\text {cm}^\text {-2}\,\text {s}^\text {-1}$$ L = 5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 and increasing ultimately to $$\mathcal {L} = 7.5 \times \text {10}^\text {34}\,\text {cm}^\text {-2}\,\text {s}^\text {-1}$$ L = 7.5 × 10 34 cm -2 s -1 . These background estimates have been a key ingredient for the planning and design of the muon detector upgrade.

Abstract

Abstract Long COVID is characterized by persistent that extends symptoms beyond established timeframes. Its varied presentation across different populations and healthcare systems poses significant challenges in understanding its clinical manifestations and implications. In this study, we present a novel application of text mining technique to automatically extract unstructured data from a long COVID survey conducted at a prominent university hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. Our phonetic text clustering (PTC) method enables the exploration of unstructured Electronic Healthcare Records (EHR) data to unify different written forms of similar terms into a single phonemic representation. We used n-gram text analysis to detect compound words and negated terms in Portuguese-BR, focusing on medical conditions and symptoms related to long COVID. By leveraging text mining, we aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of this chronic condition and its implications for healthcare systems globally. The model developed in this study has the potential for scalability and applicability in other healthcare settings, thereby supporting broader research efforts and informing clinical decision-making for long COVID patients.

Abstract

Conventional wisdom dictates that $\mathbb{Z}_N$ factors in the integral cohomology group $H^p(X_n, \mathbb{Z})$ of a compact manifold $X_n$ cannot be computed via smooth $p$-forms. We revisit this lore in light of the dimensional reduction of string theory on $X_n$, endowed with a $G$-structure metric that leads to a supersymmetric EFT. If massive $p$-form eigenmodes of the Laplacian enter the EFT, then torsion cycles coupling to them will have a non-trivial smeared delta form, that is an EFT long-wavelength description of $p$-form currents of the $(n-p)$-cycles of $X_n$. We conjecture that, whenever torsion cycles are calibrated, their linking number can be computed via their smeared delta forms. From the EFT viewpoint, a torsion factor in cohomology corresponds to a $\mathbb{Z}_N$ gauge symmetry realised by a St\"uckelberg-like action, and calibrated torsion cycles to BPS objects that source the massive fields involved in it., Comment: 44 pages + appendices. Abstract

We study the thermodynamics of the 4-dimensional electrically charged black-hole solutions of the simplest 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory using Wald's formalism. We show how the electric work term present in the 4-dimensional first law of black-hole thermodynamics arises in the purely gravitational 5-dimensional framework. In particular, we find an interesting geometric interpretation of the 4-dimensional electrostatic potential similar to the angular velocity in rotating black holes. Abstract

We revisit the first law of black hole thermodynamics in 4-dimensional theories containing scalar and Abelian vector fields coupled to gravity using Wald's formalism and a new definition of scalar charge as an integral over a 2-surface which satisfies a Gauss law in stationary black-hole spacetimes. We focus on ungauged supergravity-inspired theories with symmetric sigma models whose symmetries generate electric-magnetic dualities leaving invariant their equations of motion. Our manifestly duality-invariant form of the first law is compatible with the one obtained by of Gibbons, Kallosh and Kol. We also obtain the general expression for the scalar charges of a stationary black hole in terms of the other physical parameters of the solution and the position of the horizon, generalizing the expression obtained by Pacilio for dilaton black oles., Comment: Misprints corrected and a few comments and references added. 19. Generation of photon pairs by spontaneous four-wave mixing in linearly uncoupled resonators

Abstract

We present a detailed study of the generation of photon pairs by spontaneous four-wave mixing in a structure composed of two linearly uncoupled resonators, where energy can be transferred from one resonator to another only through a nonlinear interaction. Specifically, we consider the case of two racetrack-shaped resonators connected by a coupler designed to guarantee that the resonance comb of each resonator can be tuned independently, and to allow the nonlinear interaction between modes that belong to different combs. We show that such a coupler can be realized in at least two ways: a directional coupler or a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. For these two scenarios, we derive analytic expressions for the pair generation rate via single-pump spontaneous four-wave mixing, and compare these results with that achievable in a single ring resonator.

Abstract

Objective. This review aims to summarize the most recent and updated data on pregnancy in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), focusing on the recurrence of pregnancy-related complications, the disease activity throughout gestation and the postpartum, and the latest indications for the treatments of future mothers. Methods. We have conducted a narrative review with an online literature search on Medline and PubMed. We selected only studies written in English published until January 2024, including observational and retrospective studies, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews. Results. Proper preconception counseling and maternal-fetal monitoring are necessary to ensure the best outcome for both the mother and her baby. Despite the limited and conflicting evidence about the prevalence of adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with axSpA compared to healthy controls, primary findings demonstrate an increased risk of preterm delivery (PTD), low birth weight (LBW), and elective cesarean section (CS). Concerning disease activity, data suggests that 25-80% of women with ankylosing spondylitis experience disease flares during pregnancy, particularly around 20 weeks of gestation. On the contrary, the data on the postpartum disease flare are heterogeneous. The use of biological drugs in pregnancy is safe and effective in controlling disease activity. Conclusions. Data on pregnancy outcomes in patients with axSpA are scarce and discordant. Probably the difference in maternal disease classification, the evolution of treatment indications, and the differences emerging from study designs can account for these discrepancies. The main evidence shows an increased risk of PTD, LBW, and elective CS (although the latter may reflect cultural influences rather than medical needs due to axSpA itself). The majority of drugs used to treat axSpA, including TNFi, are safe in pregnancy without harming mothers or fetuses. Further data is needed to clarify many controversial aspects in this area.

Abstract

We compute the first-order $\alpha'$ corrections of the non-extremal Strominger-Vafa black hole and its non-supersymmetric counterparts in the framework of the Bergshoeff-de Roo formulation of the heterotic superstring effective action. The solution passes several tests: its extremal limit is the one found in an earlier publication and the effect of a T duality transformation on it is another solution of the same form with T dual charges. We compute the Hawking temperature and Wald entropy showing that they are related by the first law and Smarr formula. Abstract We find solutions of the heterotic string effective action describing the first-order α ′ corrections to two-charge black holes at finite temperature. Making explicit use of these solutions, we compute the corrections to the thermodynamic quantities: temperature, chemical potentials, mass, charges and entropy. We check that the first law of black hole mechanics is satisfied and that the thermodynamics agrees with the one extracted from the Euclidean on-shell action. Finally, we show that our results are in agreement with the corrections for the thermodynamics recently predicted by Chen, Maldacena and Witten.

Abstract

Abstract This research analyses the “word of the year 2022”: Permacrisis. Through the Semantic Differential tool (Osgood in Am Anthropol 66: 171-200, 1964), 16 words were investigated among those most searched for in Google Search in the second half of 2022. Central questions are: What are the cultural differences in permacrisis connotation among five countries (Italy, France, United Kingdom, Germany and Poland)? What are the cultural differences in how permacrisis is connotated? How do different political orientations relate to the concepts of Politics and Democracy regarding permacrisis? The research showed how the Permacrisis is strongly linked to concepts such as Nuclear weapons, World War III and the COVID-19 virus. On a sample of 1273, the study showed evident cultural differences in permacrisis connotation, such as the emphasis on Weapons by the Italians or the Economic Crisis by the Germans. Statistical analysis reveals different anxieties: i.e. Italians fear losing their strength, the French anger about not being heard, while the British are anxious to remain socially isolated. A contrast between the concepts of Politics and Democracy was analysed on the sample's declarations of belonging to political orientations such as Conservatives, Christian democrats, Social democrats, Greens and the Left. Finally, the concept of Climate Crisis has been analysed, which results in the Semantic Differential, against any prevision, placed in a more peripheral orbit than the concepts associated with Permacrisis. Abstract Idiopathic REM sleep Behavior Disorder (iRBD) is a condition at high risk of developing Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other alpha-synucleinopathies. The aim of the study was to evaluate subtle turning alterations by using Mobile health technology in iRBD individuals without subthreshold parkinsonism. A total of 148 participants (23 persons with polysomnography-confirmed iRBD without subthreshold parkinsonism, 60 drug-naïve PD patients, and 65 age-matched controls were included in this prospective cross-sectional study. All underwent a multidimensional assessment including cognitive and non-motor symptoms assessment. Then a Timed-Up-and-Go test (TUG) at normal and fast speed was performed using mobile health technology on the lower back (Rehagait®, Hasomed, Germany). Duration, mean, and peak angular velocities of the turns were compared using a multivariate model correcting for age and sex. 26. New instabilities for non-supersymmetric AdS$_4$ orientifold vacua

Abstract

We consider massive type IIA orientifold compactifications of the form AdS$_4 \times X_6$, where $X_6$ admits a Calabi-Yau metric and is threaded by background fluxes. From a 4d viewpoint, fluxes generate a potential whose vacua have been classified, including one $\mathcal{N}=1$ and three perturbatively stable $\mathcal{N}=0$ branches. We reproduce this result from a 10d viewpoint, by solving the type IIA equations at the same level of detail as previously done for the $\mathcal{N}=1$ branch. All solutions exhibit localised sources and parametric scale separation. We then analyse the non-perturbative stability of the $\mathcal{N}=0$ branches. We consider new 4d membranes, obtained from wrapping D8-branes on $X_6$ or D6-branes on its divisors, threaded by non-diluted worldvolume fluxes. Using them we show that all branches are compatible with the Weak Gravity Conjecture for membranes. In fact, most vacua satisfy the sharpened conjecture that predicts superextremal membranes in $\mathcal{N}=0$ settings, except for a subset whose non-perturbative stability remains an open problem., Comment: v2: minor corrections, published version; v1:26 pages + appendices, 2 figures

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of progressive replacement of fish oil with Schizochytrium-derived oil from Veramaris® (VMO) in the diets of Atlantic salmon, focusing on its effect during the pre-adaptation to smoltification phase of parr, with an emphasis on the winter signal period. Substitution of fish oil with VMO during this critical developmental phase of salmon (pre-adaptation to smoltification phase) can contribute to the goal of reducing dependence on wild fisheries as a primary source of essential fatty acids in aquafeeds. Three isoproteic, isolipidic and isoenergetic diets were formulated; a control diet containing 5% fish oil and 12% plant oil (0VMO) and two other diets, in which 50% and 100% of the EPA+DHA from fish oil were replaced with VMO, henceforth referred to as 50VMO and 100VMO, respectively. The fish were exposed to a 12 L:12D photoperiod over a 49-day window with samples collected at five time points, including a 48-h salt water challenge to evaluate the effects on common smoltification-related biomarkers including the expression of two genes coding for the two protein isoforms of the NKA alpha catalytic subunit (nkaa1a, nkaa1b), the gene coding for NA+/K+Cl⁻ co-transporter (nkcc1) in the gills as well as osmolality, Cl-, Mg2+, Ca2+, cortisol, growth hormone, and insulin-like growth factor-1 in plasma. The results showed non-significant differences in growth performance and only minor differences in smoltification-related parameters between the dietary treatment groups. Overall, the unconventional source of EPA+DHA was not detrimental to growth, hypoosmoregulatory ability or general welfare, suggesting that the progressive substitution of fish oil with Schizochytrium-derived oil in diets for Atlantic salmon parr is a viable option for adoption by the aquaculture industry.

Abstract

Objectives To investigate pregnancy outcomes in women with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (ARD) in the Italian prospective cohort study P-RHEUM.it.Methods Pregnant women with different ARD were enrolled for up to 20 gestational weeks in 29 Rheumatology Centres for 5 years (2018–2023). Maternal and infant information were collected in a web-based database.Results We analysed 866 pregnancies in 851 patients (systemic lupus erythematosus was the most represented disease, 19.6%). Maternal disease flares were observed in 135 (15.6%) pregnancies. 53 (6.1%) pregnancies were induced by assisted reproduction techniques, 61 (7%) ended in miscarriage and 11 (1.3%) underwent elective termination. Obstetrical complications occurred in 261 (30.1%) pregnancies, including 2.3% pre-eclampsia. Two cases of congenital heart block were observed out of 157 pregnancies (1.3%) with anti-Ro/SSA. Regarding treatments, 244 (28.2%) pregnancies were treated with glucocorticoids, 388 (44.8%) with hydroxychloroquine, 85 (9.8%) with conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs and 122 (14.1%) with biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs. Live births were 794 (91.7%), mostly at term (84.9%); four perinatal deaths (0.5%) occurred. Among 790 newborns, 31 (3.9%) were small-for-gestational-age and 169 (21.4%) had perinatal complications. Exclusive maternal breast feeding was received by 404 (46.7%) neonates. The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale was compiled by 414 women (52.4%); 89 (21.5%) scored positive for emotional distress.Conclusions Multiple factors including preconception counselling and treat-to-target with pregnancy-compatible medications may have contributed to mitigate disease-related risk factors, yielding limited disease flares, good pregnancy outcomes and frequency of complications which were similar to the Italian general obstetric population. Disease-specific issues need to be further addressed to plan preventative measures.

Abstract

Abstract We compute the first-order α ′ corrections to a family of 4-dimensional, 4-charge, non-extremal black hole solutions of Heterotic Supergravity in the case with 3 independent charges. The solutions are fully analytic, reproduce the extremal limit previously found in the literature and, applying T-duality, they transform as expected. If we reduce to the case with a single independent charge we obtain the corrections to four embeddings of the Reissner-Nordström black hole in string theory. We completely characterize the black hole thermodynamics computing the Hawking temperature, Wald entropy, mass, gauge charges and their dual thermodynamic potentials. We verify that all these quantities are related by the first law of extended black hole mechanics and the Smarr formula once we include a potential associated to the dimensionful parameter α ′ and the scalar charges. We found that the latter are not identified with the poles at infinity of the scalar fields because they receive α ′ corrections.

Abstract

We compute the first-order $\alpha'$ corrections to well-known families of heterotic multi-center black-hole solutions in five and four dimensions. The solutions can be either supersymmetric or non-supersymmetric, depending on the relative sign between two of the black-hole charges. For both cases, we find that the equilibrium of forces persists after including the $\alpha'$ corrections, as the existence of multi-center solutions free of unphysical singularities shows. 39. Non-supersymmetric black holes with $\alpha'$ corrections

Abstract

We study extremal 5- and 4-dimensional black hole solutions of the Heterotic Superstring effective action at first order in $\alpha'$ with, respectively, 3 and 4 charges of arbitrary signs. For a particular choice of the relative signs of these charges the solutions are supersymmetric, but other signs give rise to non-supersymmetric extremal black holes. Although at zeroth order all these solutions are formally identical, we show that the $\alpha'$ corrections are drastically different depending on how we break supersymmetry. We provide fully analytic $\mathcal{O}(\alpha')$ solutions and we compute their charges, masses and entropies and check that they are invariant under $\alpha'$-corrected T-duality transformations. The masses of some of these black holes are corrected in a complicated way, but we show that the shift is always negative, in agreement with the Weak Gravity Conjecture. Our formula for the corrected entropy of the four-dimensional black holes generalizes previous results obtained from the entropy function method, as we consider a more general way in which supersymmetry can be broken., Comment: 58 pages, 1 figure, version to be sent to JHEP (improved presentation and typos fixed)

40. Two strategies for modeling nonlinear optics in lossy integrated photonic structures

Abstract

We present two complementary strategies for modeling nonlinear quantum optics in realistic integrated optical devices, where scattering loss is present. In the first strategy, we model scattering loss as an attenuation; in the second, we employ a Hamiltonian treatment that includes a mechanism for scattering loss, such as a `phantom waveguide.' These strategies can be applied to a broad range of structures and processes. As an example, we use these two approaches to model spontaneous four-wave mixing in (i) a ring-channel system and (ii) an add-drop system. Even for these well-understood systems, our strategies yield some novel results. We show the rates of photon pairs, broken pairs, and lost pairs and their dependence on system parameters. We show that the properties of lost and broken photon pairs in such structures can be related to those of the un-scattered photon pairs, which are relatively simple to measure.

Abstract

The dualization of the scalar fields of a theory into $(d-2)$-form potentials preserving all the global symmetries is one of the main problems in the construction of democratic pseudoactions containing simultaneously all the original fields and their duals. We study this problem starting with the simplest cases and we show how it can be solved for scalars parametrizing Riemannian symmetric $\sigma$-models as in maximal and half-maximal supergravities. Then, we use this result to write democratic pseudoactions for theories in which the scalars are non-minimally coupled to $(p+1)$-form potentials in any dimension. These results include a proposal of democratic pseudoaction for the generic bosonic sector of 4-dimensional maximal and half-maximal ungauged supergravities. Furthermore, we propose a democratic pseudoaction for the bosonic sector of $\mathcal{N}=2B,d=10$ supergravity (the effective action of the type IIB superstring theory) containing two 0-, two 2-, one 4-, two 6- and three 8-forms which is manifestly invariant under global SL$(2,\mathbb{R})$ transformations.

Abstract Conventional wisdom dictates that ℤ N factors in the integral cohomology group H p (X n , ℤ) of a compact manifold X n cannot be computed via smooth p-forms. We revisit this lore in light of the dimensional reduction of string theory on X n , endowed with a G-structure metric that leads to a supersymmetric EFT. If massive p-form eigenmodes of the Laplacian enter the EFT, then torsion cycles coupling to them will have a non-trivial smeared delta form, that is an EFT long-wavelength description of p-form currents of the (n − p)-cycles of X n . We conjecture that, whenever torsion cycles are calibrated, their linking number can be computed via their smeared delta forms. From the EFT viewpoint, a torsion factor in cohomology corresponds to a ℤ N gauge symmetry realised by a Stückelberg-like action, and calibrated torsion cycles to BPS objects that source the massive fields involved in it.

Abstract

Abstract We study the thermodynamics of the 4-dimensional electrically charged black-hole solutions of the simplest 5-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory using Wald’s formalism. We show how the electric work term present in the 4-dimensional first law of black-hole thermodynamics arises in the purely gravitational 5-dimensional framework. In particular, we find an interesting geometric interpretation of the 4-dimensional electrostatic potential similar to the angular velocity in rotating black holes. Furthermore, we show how the momentum map equation arises from demanding compatibility between the timelike Killing vector of the black-hole solution and the spatial Killing vector of the 5-dimensional background.
