1. Surface Hydroxylation-Induced Electrostatic Forces Thicken Water Films on Quartz

Abstract: Aqueous films on mineral surfaces control the physical, chemical, and biological transport processes in the atmosphere, soil, and rocks. Despite the importance of thin films for various research and engineering fields, there are still unanswered questions regarding the roles of the different forces affecting the nature of water films. One of these, the focus of this study, is the development of abnormally thick water films on quartz surfaces. In this study, we developed a density-functional-theory-based model to describe the time-dependent evolution of water films and identify the governing forces responsible for thickening films. We simulated the diffusion of water vapor from ambient air toward mineral surfaces and the formation and thickening of water films at various relative humidity values. Our model predicts an abnormal water film thickness on a hydroxylated quartz surface compared to a surface free of hydroxylation, which explains experimental observations. We further used the model to understand the key interaction forces at different stages of water film formation and thickening. Our model suggests that the attractive hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces initiate a seed layer of water, and the electrostatic forces, generated by the hydroxylated and thus charged surface, lead to the thickening of water films. This generalizable model can provide insights into the peculiarities of water film development on various mineral surfaces.

2. Machine learning surrogates for surface complexation model of uranium sorption to oxides

Abstract: The safety assessments of the geological storage of spent nuclear fuel require understanding the underground radionuclide mobility in case of a leakage from multi-barrier canisters. Uranium, the most common radionuclide in non-reprocessed spent nuclear fuels, is immobile in reduced form (U(IV) and highly mobile in an oxidized state (U(VI)). The latter form is considered one of the most dangerous environmental threats in the safety assessments of spent nuclear fuel repositories. The sorption of uranium to mineral surfaces surrounding the repository limits their mobility. We quantify uranium sorption using surface complexation models (SCMs). Unfortunately, numerical SCM solvers often encounter convergence problems due to the complex nature of convoluted equations and correlations between model parameters. This study explored two machine learning surrogates for the 2-pK Triple Layer Model of uranium retention by oxide surfaces if released as U(IV) in the oxidizing conditions: random forest regressor and deep neural networks. Our surrogate models, particularly DNN, accurately reproduce SCM model predictions at a fraction of the computational cost without any convergence issues. The safety assessment of spent fuel repositories, specifically the migration of leaked radioactive waste, will benefit from having ultrafast AI/ML surrogates for the computationally expensive sorption models that can be easily incorporated into larger-scale contaminant migration models. One such model is presented here.

3. Distance-dependent dielectric constant at the calcite/electrolyte interface: Implication for surface complexation modeling

Abstract: HypothesisThe electrical double layer formed at the mineral/electrolyte interface is often modeled using mean-field approaches based on a continuum description of the solvent whose dielectric constant is assumed to decrease monotonically with decreasing distance to the surface. In contrast, molecular simulations show that the solvent polarizability oscillates near the surface similar to the water density profile - as shown previously, for example, by Bonthuis et al. (D.J. Bonthuis, S. Gekle, R.R. Netz, Dielectric Profile of Interfacial Water and its Effect on Double-Layer Capacitance, Phys Rev Lett 107(16) (2011) 166102). We showed that molecular and mesoscale pictures agree by spatially averaging the dielectric constant obtained from molecular dynamics simulations over the distances relevant to the mean-field representation. In addition, the values of capacitances used to describe the electrical double layer in Surface Complexation Models (SCMs) of the mineral/electrolyte interface can be estimated using molecularly informed spatially averaged dielectric constants and positions of hydration layers.ExperimentsFirst, we used molecular dynamics simulations to model the calcite 101¯4/electrolyte interface. Next, by using atomistic trajectories, we calculated the distance-dependent static dielectric constant and water density in the direction normal to the. Finally, we applied spatial compartmentalization consistent with the model of parallel-plate capacitors connected in series to estimate SCM capacitances.FindingsComputationally expensive simulations are required to determine the dielectric constant profile of interfacial water near the mineral surface. On the other hand, water density profiles are readily assessable from much shorter simulation trajectories. Our simulations confirmed that dielectric and water density oscillations at the interface are correlated. Here, we parametrized linear regression models to estimate the dielectric constant directly from the local water density. This is a significant computational shortcut compared to slowly converging calculations relying on total dipole moment fluctuations. The amplitude of the interfacial dielectric constant oscillation can exceed the dielectric constant of the bulk water, suggesting an ice-like frozen state, but only if there are no electrolyte ions. The interfacial accumulation of electrolyte ions causes a decrease in the dielectric constant due to the reduction of water density and re-orientation of water dipoles in ion hydration shells. Finally, we show how to use the computed dielectric properties to estimate SCM's capacitances.

Abstract: Molecular dynamics simulation is an indispensable tool for understanding the collective behavior of atoms and molecules and the phases they form. Statistical mechanics provides accurate routes for predicting macroscopic properties as time-averages over visited molecular configurations - microstates. However, to obtain convergence, we need a sufficiently long record of visited microstates, which translates to the high-computational cost of the molecular simulations. In this work, we show how to use a point cloud-based deep learning strategy to rapidly predict the structural properties of liquids from a single molecular configuration. We tested our approach using three homogeneous liquids with progressively more complex entities and interactions: Ar, NO, and H2O under varying pressure and temperature conditions within the liquid state domain. Our deep neural network architecture allows rapid insight into the liquid structure, here probed by the radial distribution function, and can be used with molecular/atomistic configurations generated by either simulation, first-principle, or experimental methods.

5. A reverse-selective ion exchange membrane for the selective transport of phosphates via an outer-sphere complexation–diffusion pathway

Abstract: Specific-ion selectivity is a highly desirable feature for the next generation of membranes. However, existing membranes rely on differences in charge, size and hydration energy, which limits their ability to target individual ion species. Here we demonstrate a nanocomposite ion-exchange membrane material that enables a reverse-selective transport mechanism that can selectively pass a single ion species. We demonstrate this transport mechanism with phosphate ions selectively transporting across negatively charged cation exchange membranes. Selective transport is enabled by the in situ growth of hydrous manganese oxide nanoparticles throughout a cation exchange membrane that provide a diffusion pathway via phosphate-specific, reversible outer-sphere interactions. On incorporating the hydrous manganese oxide nanoparticles, the membrane's phosphate flux increased by a factor of 27 over an unmodified cation exchange membrane, and the selectivity of phosphorous over sulfate, nitrate and chloride reaches 47, 100 and 20, respectively. By pairing ion-specific outer-sphere interactions between the target ions and appropriate nanoparticles, these nanocomposite ion-exchange materials can, in principle, achieve selective transport for a range of ions.

Abstract: The "Workshop on Machine learning in heterogeneous porous materials" brought together international scientific communities of applied mathematics, porous media, and material sciences with experts in the areas of heterogeneous materials, machine learning (ML) and applied mathematics to identify how ML can advance materials research. Within the scope of ML and materials research, the goal of the workshop was to discuss the state-of-the-art in each community, promote crosstalk and accelerate multi-disciplinary collaborative research, and identify challenges and opportunities. As the end result, four topic areas were identified: ML in predicting materials properties, and discovery and design of novel materials, ML in porous and fractured media and time-dependent phenomena, Multi-scale modeling in heterogeneous porous materials via ML, and Discovery of materials constitutive laws and new governing equations. 10. Polytypism in semi-disordered lizardite and amesite by low-dose HAADF-STEM

Abstract: Serpentine minerals exert important controls on the physical properties of ultramafic rocks and have the potential to influence deformation phenomena in fault zones and to control the release of water in subducted slabs. Sheet serpentine generally, and lizardite and amesite specifically, can adopt alternative crystallographic stacking arrangements called polytypes. Polytypism has been extensively studied in fully ordered crystals, but it remains largely enigmatic in the more common semi-disordered crystals that in long-range analyses such as Xray diffraction only exhibit random combinations of 0b and ±1/3b interlayer shifts. To date, atomic-resolution imaging to identify locally ordered polytypes has been precluded by the beam-sensitive nature of this hydrous magnesium silicate mineral. Here, we employed low-dose high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) to study the polytypic structure of semi-disordered lizardite and amesite. Because the electron dose was as low as ~6000 e-/Å2, it was possible to directly resolve oxygen atomic columns and all the cations with a resolution of ~1 Å and reveal the short-range order. For lizardite, we identified long-period non-standard polytypes, including examples with 3, 4, 8, and 9 layers stemming from the ordering of the octahedral tilt along the a-axis. For amesite, we found short-range ordered polytypes with periodicities of up to 42 Å stemming from the ordering of interlayer shifts along the b-axis. The resolution was sufficient to determine the relative abundance of 6R2, 6R1, 2H1, and 2H2 polytypes in amesite to be 46.1, 29.6, 7.7, and 1.9%, respectively. This is contrary to the expectation that the most common form of amesite is the 2H2 polytype, which may be more likely to form macroscopic crystals suitable for conventional Xray diffraction-based studies. We conclude that HAADF-STEM methods open the way for the characterization of beam-sensitive minerals and to resolve the structural details of less well-ordered (but possibly more abundant) minerals at a unit-cell scale.

Abstract: Most of the sedimentary carbonates deposited in the marine environments are composed of calcium carbonate minerals with varying amounts of incorporated Mg2+. However, understanding how interactions of impurities with carbonate and their incorporation affect sediments behavior remains a challenge. Here, a new insight is obtained by monitoring solution composition, morphology, and electrokinetic potential of carbonate particles formed in a spontaneous unseeded batch precipitation experiment using electrochemical and scanning electron microscopy methods. The solid composition and growth rate are extracted from changes in the bulk composition and fitted to chemical affinity rate law, revealing that the precipitation pathway consists of second-order dissolution and first-order precipitation. The molecular dynamics simulations show that the lattice strain induced by randomly substituting Ca2+ by Mg2+ stabilizes spherical nanoparticles and reduces their surface area and volume. Combining kinetics and thermodynamics insight, we conclude that variation in the carbonate bulk and interfacial energies, along with the solution supersaturation, lead to the dissolution-precipitation transformation pathway from Mg-rich to Mg-poor carbonate phase that preserves spherulitic morphology. Our findings are relevant for long-standing questions of how impurities influence diagenesis of carbonate sediments and spherulitic carbonate particles' origin.

Abstract: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive neurodegeneration associated with amyloid β (Aβ) peptide aggregation. The aggregation of Aβ monomers (AβMs) leads to the formation of Aβ oligomers (AβOs), the neurotoxic Aβ form, capable of permeating the cell membrane. Here, we investigated the effect of a fluorene-based active drug candidate, named K162, on both Aβ aggregation and AβO toxicity toward the bilayer lipid membrane (BLM). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and molecular dynamics (MD) were employed to show that K162 inhibits AβOs-induced BLM permeation, thus preserving BLM integrity. In the presence of K162, only shallow defects on the BLM surface were formed. Apparently, K162 modifies Aβ aggregation by bypassing the formation of toxic AβOs, and only nontoxic AβMs, dimers (AβDs), and fibrils (AβFs) are produced. Unlike other Aβ toxicity inhibitors, K162 preserves neurologically beneficial AβMs. This unique K162 inhibition mechanism provides an alternative AD therapeutic strategy that could be explored in the future.

14. Electrophoretic and potentiometric signatures of multistage CaCO3 nucleation

Abstract: HypothesisCalcium carbonate nucleation is often a complex and multistep process that is difficult to follow in situ. The time-resolved electrochemical and electrophoretic methods can provide a new insight into the nucleation pathway.ExperimentsHere, we used a combination of speciation calculations with time-resolved electrophoretic and potentiometric methods to monitor calcium carbonate precipitation from a slightly supersaturated solution.FindingsAfter an initial mixing period of three minutes in which metastable CaCO3 phases may have nucleated and subsequently dissolved due to locally-high supersaturations, bulk solution pH and Ca2+ concentrations stabilize before decreasing in tandem with the precipitation of a CaCO3 phase. After an hour, the precipitate is dominated by calcite that grows at the expense of dissolving vaterite. The time-dependent electrokinetic potential shows analogous signatures of multistage nucleation process: initial rapid changes in ζ-potential are followed by much slower equilibration starting about one hour after reagents are mixed. The changes in ζ-potential, solution pH, saturation indexes, and particle morphology are consistent with vaterite to calcite transformation via dissolution of the former and recrystallization of the latter. These findings highlight the potential use of ζ-potential measurements for monitoring polymorphic transformations of carbonate phases in-situ.

Abstract: Goethite is one of the most stable and common iron(III) minerals at the Earth's near surface. However, recent isotope tracer studies have suggested that goethite continuously recrystallizes in the presence of aqueous Fe(II) ions. Some of these studies indicate the presence of two regimes of atom-exchange kinetics, a rapid stage assigned to reactive defect sites initially available at particle surfaces, followed by slower continuous exchange. An autocatalytic solid-state electron conduction model coupling Fe(II) oxidative adsorption to its reductive release at spatially distinct sites has been proposed, but the thermodynamic driving force has yet to be pinpointed. Here, using a novel hybrid/reactive molecular simulation method, for goethite (110) surfaces at circumneutral pH, we rigorously tested whether surface free energy minimization, including examining the role of structural defects, is sufficient to overcome the activation energy for interfacial electron transfer and conduction. The simulations quantitatively show that (i) on smooth stable surfaces the available thermal energy at dynamic equilibrium is sufficient to sustain the slow continuous regime of atom-exchange kinetics via short intrasurface electron conduction pathways of 1-2 nm (three to five Fe site hops), (ii) in this slower regime, the model converges to atom-exchange kinetics of 10 -5 Fe s -1 cm -2 , a rate recently deduced from stochastic modeling of experimental data and linked to the reductive dissolution rate of goethite, and (iii) the driving force for smoothing of initially rough defective goethite surfaces can accelerate atom exchange to an extent quantitatively consistent with that observed in the initial rapid stage, in this case accessing conduction pathways of up to 8 nm. The findings suggest that the interaction of Fe(II) with initially defective goethite surfaces can drive, by the conduction model, atom exchange that is capable of recrystallizing the interiors of nanoscale particles and that, closer to equilibrium on smooth surfaces, slower atom exchange continues in perpetuity but likely involving only the outermost atomic layers.

16. Lateral water structure connects metal oxide nanoparticle faces

Abstract: When a metal oxide surface is immersed in aqueous solution, it has the ability to bind, orient, and order interfacial water, affecting both chemical and physical interactions with the surface. Structured interfacial water thus possesses time-averaged, spatially varying polarization charge and potential that are comparable to those arising due to ion accumulation. It is well established that interfacial water structure propagates from the surface into bulk solution. Here, we show that interfacial water structure also propagates laterally, with important consequences. The constant pH molecular dynamics was used to impose a pH difference between opposite faces of a model goethite (α-FeOOH) nanoparticle and quantify water polarization charge on intervening faces. We find that the structure of water on one face is strongly affected by the structure on nearby surfaces, revealing the importance of long-range lateral hydrogen bonding networks with implications for particle aggregation, oriented attachment, and processes such as dissolution and growth.

19. The Impact of Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P. Karst. Supplementation on the Technological, Chemical, and Quality Parameters of Wheat Bread.

Abstract: This study explores the incorporation of Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P. Karst. (Reishi mushroom) into wheat bread to develop a functional food with enhanced nutritional value. Reishi powder was added to bread formulations at levels of 3%, 6%, 9%, and 12% to assess its effects on physicochemical, nutritional, and sensory properties. The 12% Reishi supplementation resulted in a twofold increase in total dietary fibre (from 7.21 g to 17.08 g per 100 g dry matter) and significant (p < 0.05) elevations in mineral content, particularly calcium (68%), iron (32%), and manganese (61.9%). Carbohydrate content decreased markedly by 27%, contributing to a 19.33% reduction in caloric value. Reishi addition improved bread yield and reduced baking losses, enhancing production efficiency. However, higher Reishi levels negatively impacted bread volume, possibly due to interference with gluten network formation. An increase in crumb moisture was observed, contributing to extended freshness. Sensory evaluation revealed that loaves of bread containing up to 6% Reishi were acceptable to consumers, whereas higher levels detrimentally affected flavour and aroma. Therefore, Reishi-enriched bread, particularly with 6% supplementation, presents a promising functional alternative to conventional wheat bread, optimising nutritional benefits while maintaining consumer acceptability. 20. Surface Charge Effects on Fe(II) Sorption and Oxidation at (110) Goethite Surfaces

Abstract: Iron(III) oxides and oxyhydroxides are among the most reactive minerals in the environment, with surfaces that become charged when immersed in water. The governing role of surface charge over interfacial processes such as metal sorption is well understood. However, its role in interfacial redox reactions, such as when metal sorption is coupled to interfacial electron transfer (ET), is not. This is mainly because surface charge affects not only the types and densities of surface complexes formed but also their respective driving forces for ET. An important case is Fe(II)-catalyzed recrystallization of Fe(III)-oxyhydroxides, in which Fe(II) sorption and interfacial ET are closely linked. In this study, we used replica-exchange constant-pH molecular dynamics simulations (Zarzycki, P.; Smith, D. M.; Rosso, K. M. J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2015, 11, 1715-1724) to calculate the distance-dependent electrostatic potential at charged (110) surfaces of goethite particles, assessing its effect on previously computed Fe(II) sorption and interfacial ET free energies (Zarzycki, P.; Kerisit, S.; Rosso, K. M. J. Phys. Chem. C 2015, 119, 3111-3123). We show that Fe(II) adsorbs preferentially as an inner-sphere complex on the negatively charged surface, and as an outer-sphere complex on the positively charged surface because of both electrostatic repulsion and high energy barriers that arise from ordered water layers at the interface. The separation distance between adsorbed Fe(II) and the surface largely dictates adiabatic versus nonadiabatic ET regimes for this interface. The findings help unravel the pH dependence of Fe(II)-catalyzed recrystallization of goethite.

Abstract: Chemotherapy is a primary treatment for the metastatic lung cancer patients. To select the most effective combination of drugs, we need an efficient way of assessing tumor response. Here, we showed that differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis of blood serum proteins could reveal the patient response to the treatment. If chemotherapy is effective, serum proteins DSC curve of non-small cellular lung cancer (NSCLC) case is similar to the those of the healthy individuals. If treatment fails, notable changes occur in the DSC profile of NSCLC patients blood serum. Our preliminary work illustrates how thermal analysis of changes in the heat capacity of blood serum proteins can provide an insight into patient response to chemotherapy - the essential information for any successive lung cancer treatment.

Abstract: Iron(III) oxalate, Fe3+(C2O4)33-, is a photoactive metal organic complex found in natural systems and used to quantify photon flux as a result of its high absorbance and reaction quantum yield. It also serves as a model complex to understand metal carboxylate complex photolysis because the mechanism of photolysis and eventual production of CO2 is not well understood for any system. We employed pump/probe mid-infrared transient absorption spectroscopy to study the photolysis reaction of the iron(III) oxalate ion in D2O and H2O up to 3 ns following photoexcitation. We find that intramolecular electron transfer from oxalate to iron occurs on a sub-picosecond time scale, creating iron(II) complexed by one oxidized and two spectator oxalate ligands. Within 40 ps following electron transfer, the oxidized oxalate molecule dissociates to form free solvated CO2(aq) and a species inferred to be CO2•- based on the appearance of a new vibrational absorption band and ab initio simulation. 25. Electron Mobility and Trapping in Ferrihydrite Nanoparticles

Abstract: Iron is the most abundant transition metal in the Earth's crust, and naturally occurring iron oxide minerals play a commanding role in environmental redox reactions. Although iron oxide redox reactions are well-studied, their precise mechanisms are not fully understood. Recent work has shown that these involve electron transfer pathways within the solid, suggesting that overall reaction rates could be dependent upon electron mobility. Initial ultrafast spectroscopy studies of iron oxide nanoparticles sensitized by fluorescein derivatives supported a model for electron mobility based on polaronic hopping of electron charge carriers between iron sites, but the constitutive relationships between hopping mobilities and interfacial charge transfer processes has remained obscured. We developed a coarse-grained lattice Monte Carlo model to simulate the collective mobilities and lifetimes of these photoinjected electrons with respect to recombination with adsorbed dye molecules for essential nanophase ferrihydrite and tested predictions made by the simulations using pump-probe spectroscopy. We acquired optical transient absorption spectra as a function of the particle size and under a variety of solution conditions and used cryogenic transmission electron microscopy to determine the aggregation state of the nanoparticles. We observed biphasic electron recombination kinetics over time scales that spanned from picoseconds to microseconds, the slower regime of which was fit with a stretched exponential decay function. The recombination rates were weakly affected by the nanoparticle size and aggregation state, suspension pH, and injection of multiple electrons per nanoparticle. We conclude that electron mobility indeed limits the rate of interfacial electron transfer in these systems, with the slowest processes relating to escape from deep traps, the presence of which outweighs the influence of environmental factors, such as pH-dependent surface charge.

Abstract: The safety assessments of the geological storage of spent nuclear fuel require understanding the underground radionuclide mobility in case of a leakage from multi-barrier canisters. Uranium, the most common radionuclide in non-reprocessed spent nuclear fuels, is immobile in reduced form (U(IV) and highly mobile in an oxidized state (U(VI)). The latter form is considered one of the most dangerous environmental threats in the safety assessments of spent nuclear fuel repositories. The sorption of uranium to mineral surfaces surrounding the repository limits their mobility. We quantify uranium sorption using surface complexation models (SCMs). Unfortunately, numerical SCM solvers often encounter convergence problems due to the complex nature of convoluted equations and correlations between model parameters. This study explored two machine learning surrogates for the 2-pK Triple Layer Model of uranium retention by oxide surfaces if released as U(IV) in the oxidizing conditions: random forest regressor and deep neural networks. Our surrogate models, particularly DNN, accurately reproduce SCM model predictions at a fraction of the computational cost without any convergence issues. The safety assessment of spent fuel repositories, specifically the migration of leaked radioactive waste, will benefit from having ultrafast AI/ML surrogates for the computationally expensive sorption models that can be easily incorporated into larger-scale contaminant migration models. Abstract: Water diffusion within smectite clay interlayers is reduced by confinement and hence is highly determined by the interlayer spacings that are adopted during swelling. However, a molecular understanding of the short- and long-range forces governing interlayer water structure and dynamics is lacking. Using molecular dynamics simulations of water intercalated between pyrophyllite (smectite prototype) layers we provide a detailed picture of the variation of interlayered water mobility accompanying smectite expansion. Subtle changes in hydrogen bond network structure cause significant changes in water mobility that is greater for stable hydration states and reduced for intermediate separations. By studying pyrophyllite with and without external water we reveal that long-range electrostatic forces apply a restraining effect upon interlayer water mobility. Our findings are relevant for broad range of confining nanostructures with walls thin enough to permit long-range interactions that could affect the mobility of confined solvent molecules and solute species.

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to examine the extrusion-cooking process of cereal blends with addition of hatchery waste (HW). The effect of HW addition on the physical properties and chemical composition of the extrudates was examined. The share of the HW in blends with corn meal was variable in the range of 5–30%. The study was conducted using a counter-rotating twin-screw extruder (L:D ratio 12:1, screw speed 75 rpm, die diameters 3 mm × 6 mm, profile of barrel temperature 120/140/180/180/130°C, and material moisture 28%). Increase in the content of the HW from 5 to 30% reduced the expansion ratio, pellet durability index, water absorption index, and water solubility index of the extrudates. The microstructure of the extrudates with HW addition is non-homogeneous; the areas with densely packed and adherent granules, interwoven with fibrous structures, can be observed. Increase in the share of HW leads to a lowering of the levels of crude fiber and total dietary fiber in the extrudates. Moreover, a significant increase in the content of protein, crude fat, and mineral elements such as calcium, sodium, magnesium, and iron was observed.

Abstract: We perform density functional calculations of the equilibrium 57Fe/54Fe ratios for ferrous iron dissolved in periclase and MgSiO3 perovskite at the pressures and temperatures of the Earth's mantle. Pressure increases the partitioning of 57Fe into both phases by a factor of three from the Earth's surface to the core-mantle boundary. In ferropericlase, a large contribution to this increase comes from the electronic transition from high-spin to low-spin iron. Abstract: The increasing prevalence of bariatric surgery has resulted in a rise in the number of redo procedures as well. While redo bariatric surgery has demonstrated its effectiveness, there is still a subset of patients who may not derive any benefits from it. This poses a significant challenge for bariatric surgeons, especially when there is a lack of clear guidelines. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of patients who underwent Re-Redo bariatric surgery. We conducted a retrospective cohort study on a group of 799 patients who underwent redo bariatric surgery between 2010 and 2020. Among these patients, 20 individuals underwent a second elective redo bariatric surgery (Re-Redo) because of weight regain (15 patients) or insufficient weight loss, i.e. < 50% EWL (5 patients). Mean BMI before Re-Redo surgery was 38.8 ± 4.9 kg/m2. Mean age was 44.4 ± 11.5 years old. The mean %TWL before and after Re-Redo was 17.4 ± 12.4% and %EBMIL was 51.6 ± 35.9%. 13/20 patients (65%) achieved > 50% EWL. The mean final %TWL was 34.2 ± 11.1% and final %EBMIL was 72.1 ± 20.8%. The mean BMI after treatment was 31.9 ± 5.3 kg/m2. Complications occurred in 3 of 20 patients (15%), with no reported mortality or need for another surgical intervention. The mean follow-up after Re-Redo was 35.3 months. Although Re-Redo bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for obesity, it carries a significant risk of complications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Introduction: An endoscopic intragastric balloon (IGB) placement is one of the minimally invasive methods of obesity treatment. One of the rare serious complications is mechanical bowel obstruction requiring operative management. We report a case of a male patient with small bowel obstruction due to IGB migration and the literature review of complications during IGB treatment. Detailed Case Description: A patient with a BMI of 28 kg/m2 was admitted to the hospital with spontaneous deflation of an IGB. Due to the suspected location of IGB in the ileum laparoscopy was performed. The enterotomy was performed and the IGB removed. The procedure and the postoperative period were uneventful. Discussion: Spontaneous IGB ruptures are reported in the literature with a frequency ranging from 0.6 to 23%. The majority of deflated devices are spontaneously excreted with the stool with no abdominal symptoms. Only 0.38% of IGBs cause mechanical bowel obstruction of requiring surgical management. Based on our own experience and literature review, we propose the diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm. C onclusion: Complications after IGB placement can range from mild to severe, that is why it is so important to make an early diagnosis based on the emerging symptoms and to implement prompt management to reduce or avoid serious complications. Any patient reporting disturbing symptoms occurring over a prolonged period of time requires hospitalization and careful observation for the occurrence of gastrointestinal obstruction. Abstract: Introduction: The constantly increasing prevalence of obesity in the population and the lengthening of life expectancy affect the appearance of the problem of pathological obesity also in the elderly. At the same time, an increase in the number of bariatric procedures (also revisional) performed in elderly patients is observed. Aim: To assess the indications for revisional bariatric procedures along with the safety and postoperative results in the group of patients over 60 years of age. Material and methods: The study was conducted in 2019--2020 among patients undergoing revisional bariatric procedures in Polish bariatric centers. The data were obtained through a multicenter, observational retrospective study. Results: Our data consist of 55 (8.1%) patients older than 60 years of age who underwent revisional bariatric procedures. Revisional procedures in the group of patients over 60 years of age had fewer postoperative complications (16.4% vs. 23.1%, p < 0.05). Remission of type II diabetes or arterial hypertension was achieved to a lesser extent in patients operated on over the age of 60 (13% and 15%, respectively) compared to patients operated on under the age of 60 (47% and 34%, respectively; p < 0.05). Conclusions: Revisional bariatric procedures in the group of patients over 60 years of age do not cause an increased risk of postoperative complications or prolonged hospital stay. The possibility of achieving remission or improvement in the treatment of comorbidities in patients operated on over 60 years of age is relatively lower compared to a younger group.
