This cross sectional study was carried out between 1993 to 1998 at Razi Skin Hospital, the affiliated Dermatology Department of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Eight hundred patients receiving etretinate for various skin diseases took part in this study. Among them, 457 patients with first admission to dermatologic clinic who had at least four regular sequential visits and responding to our questionnaire were selected to enter the study for evaluating acute toxicity of etretinate. Cheilitis with a frequency of 88 percent was the most frequent side effect. Hair loss (22.97%), dry mouth with thirst (15.09%), dryness of mucous membranes (13.12%), xerosis with pruritus (11.15%), nose bleeding (8.31%), paronychia (5.47%), facial dermatitis (3.06%), conjunctivitis (2.84%) and in addition to mucocutaneous ones, chills (2.63%), headache (2.19%), mental depression (2.19%), urinary frequency (1.53%) and papilledema (0.44%) were among the other observed toxicities, The relationship between mucocutaneous side effect with dosage of etretinate, sex and, age of the patients was evaluated. Recent studies have shown participation of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Several mechanisms might be involved in the dysregulation of expression of lncRNAs in patients with psoriasis, among them is the presence of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) which modulate expression or function of these transcripts. In the present work, we genotyped three SNPs (rs12826786, rs1899663 and rs4759314) of the HOX Transcript Antisense RNA (HOTAIR) in 286 patients with psoriasis and 300 control subjects. The rs12826786 was associated with risk of psoriasis in dominant model (TC + TT vs. CC: OR (95% CI) = 1.59 (0.1.14-2.22), adjusted p-value = .02). In the allelic model, T allele of this SNP significantly increased the risk of psoriasis compared with the C allele (OR (95% CI) = 1.35 (1.06-1.71), adjusted p-value = .04). Other SNPs were not associated with risk of psoriasis in any inheritance model. No significant difference was found in haplotype frequencies between cases and controls. The current work shows association between a genomic variant within HOTAIR and risk of psoriasis. Background: Psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory disease which mostly affects skin. Evidences support the role of autoimmune responses in this disorder. The long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) antisense non coding RNA in the INK4 locus (ANRIL) has been shown to participate in modulation of immune response and in the pathogenesis of immune-related disorders., Methods: We genotyped four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with this lncRNA (rs1333045, rs1333048, rs4977574 and rs10757278) in 286 patients with psoriasis and 300 age-/sex-matched controls to identify the role of ANRIL as a risk locus for psoriasis., Results: The C allele of rs1333048 SNP was significantly more prevalent among cases compared with controls (OR (95% CI) = 1.56 (1.23-1.97), adjusted P value = 8.31E-4). The A allele of the rs4977574 had a protective effect against psoriasis (OR (95% CI) = 0.63 (0.49-0.81), adjusted P value = 0.001). The G allele of the rs10757278 conferred risk of psoriasis in the assessed population (OR (95% CI) = 1.9 (1.51-2.4), adjusted P value = 2.18 E-7). The C A G A haplotype (rs1333045, rs1333048, rs4977574 and rs10757278, respectively) was reported to be a protective haplotype against psoriasis (OR (95% CI) = 0.5 (0.35-0.71), adjusted P value = 0.001). The C A G G and T C G G haplotypes conferred risk of psoriasis in the assessed population (OR (95% CI) = 2.37 (1.59-3.54), adjusted P value = 2.4E-4; OR (95% CI) = 5.42 (2.88-10.22), adjusted P value = 1.1E-7, respectively)., Conclusion: Consequently, ANRIL can be regarded as a risk locus of psoriasis in the assessed population. Aim: In this study prevalence rate of Helicobacter pylori and its associated factors have been investigated in urban and rural areas of Sari., Background: Helicobacter pylori has an important role in gastrointestinal diseases including peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. It is the most common infection in human population worldwide. Hence, the epidemiology of this infection in all parts of the world is of utmost importance., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 497 individuals ranging 15-65 years of age in Sari city and its surrounding rural residents. The sampling method was a cluster random sampling multi staged in stratified population by urban and rural areas. Questionnaires for personal and socio-economic data were filled. Blood samples were drawn and kept for analysis (IgG antibody ELISA for Helicobacter pylori ). The data was analyzed by SPSS statistical software and Chi-square test and logistic regression were used., Results: The prevalence of helicobacter infection was 44.5% in the studied population. This prevalence was 41.3% and 47.8% in urban and rural areas, respectively. Just a significant association between the infection and the age of subjects was observed in multiple regression analysis (p=0.001). However, in univariate analysis the level of education was also significantly associated with Helicobacter pylori infection (p=0.015). No other variable was associated with the infection., Conclusion: The prevalence of helicobacter infection has dropped significantly in the region in comparison with the previous studies during the last 15 years., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no conflict of interest.
