Abstract

This article discusses the historical discovery of the uterine tubes, also known as fallopian tubes. While Gabriele Falloppio is commonly credited with this discovery, the article argues that Medieval Persian scientists, such as Sayyed Ismail ibn Hasan, also known as Jorjani, recognized the function of the uterine tubes even earlier. Jorjani's descriptions of the tubes in his medical encyclopedia, as well as other Persian medical texts, demonstrate a clear understanding of their anatomy and function. The article suggests that Falloppio may have been influenced by this Persian knowledge when writing about the female reproductive anatomy. [Extracted from the article]

23. Evaluation of the Effect of "Honey Zufa" Herbal Syrup on Cough in Hospitalized Patients With COVID-19: A Double Blind Randomized Clinical Trial.

Abstract

Cough is one of the most prevalent symptoms of COVID-19, affecting over 60% of patients. This symptom significantly diminishes quality of life, causing fatigue, insomnia, dysphonia, musculoskeletal pain, and urinary incontinence. Honey Zufa herbal syrup is a well-known antitussive remedy in the Iranian market and was evaluated for its potential to alleviate this symptom. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of Honey Zufa herbal syrup in treating acute cough resulting from mild to moderate COVID-19. A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 200 patients assigned to either the treatment group, receiving Honey Zufa herbal syrup, or the placebo group, receiving a placebo. Both groups also received standard cough control medications. Cough severity was measured using three different scoring systems. The impact of Honey Zufa on cough severity, the influence of other medications, and changes in laboratory parameters were monitored over a 14-day period. Honey Zufa herbal syrup significantly reduced cough severity compared to the placebo across all scoring systems. The treatment group experienced a greater reduction in cough severity than the placebo group. However, there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of antitussive medication regimens. Laboratory parameters remained stable, and no significant side effects were observed. Honey Zufa herbal syrup effectively reduces cough severity in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19, suggesting it could serve as a useful complementary and alternative treatment option for COVID-19-induced cough. Copyright © 2022 Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Published by Tehran University of Medical Sciences.Abu Reyhan Biruni (973-1048 CE) was a Persian polymath in medieval era. He had more than 100 books and treatises on different subjects like astronomy, culture, history, mathematics and pharmacy. In medical sciences, he was one of the first persons who introduced pharmacy as a separated field from medicine. He was pioneer to define pharmacy and pharmacist similar to current definitions. It was one of the earliest definitions of pharmacy. Biruni can be introduced as a pharmacist, nor physician. He also had a book on pharmacy, Al-Saydana fi al-Tibb (Pharmacy in Medicine). This book is one of the most important works on pharmacy in medieval era. He clarifies the role of pharmacists to serve pharmaceutical services to the patients. It shows the importance of pharmacy as an independent field of medical sciences in Persia and Islamic civilization about a thousand years ago.

50. Anti-LINGO-1 improved remyelination and neurobehavioral deficit in cuprizone-induced demyelination

Abstract

Objective(s): Central nervous system demyelination is the main feature of multiple sclerosis (MS). The most important unmet need in MS is use of treatments that delay the progression of the disease. Leucine-rich repeat and Immunoglobulin-like domain containing NOGO receptor-interacting protein 1(LINGO-1) have been known as inhibitors of oligodendrocyte differentiation and myelination. Materials and Methods: We investigated LINGO-1 antibody effects on remyelination and neurobehavioral deficit using cuprizone-induced demyelination. Animals were randomly divided into three groups (n = 10): (1) Control group; received the regular diet, (2) CPZ group; normal saline was injected intraperitoneally, and (3) Treatment group; LINGO-1 antibody (10 mg/kg) was injected IP once every six days for 3 weeks. We assessed the level of myelin basic protein (MBP), neurofilament heavy chain (NF200), and Brain-derived neuroprotective factor (BDNF) in the corpus callosum (CC) by immunostaining against MBP, NF200, and BDNF. Results: We found decreased levels of MBP, NF200, and BDNF in demyelinated CC, and anti-LINGO-1 treatment improved demyelinated structures. Furthermore, motor impairment was measured by Open-field (OFT) and Balance beam tests. In the treatment group, motor impairment was significantly improved. Conclusion: These results provide evidence that LINGO-1 antibody can improve remyelination and neurobehavioral deficit.
