Abstract

Mushroom billiards have the remarkable property to show one or more clear cut integrable islands in one or several chaotic seas, without any fractal boundaries. The islands correspond to orbits confined to the hats of the mushrooms, which they share with the chaotic orbits. It is thus interesting to ask how long a chaotic orbit will remain in the hat before returning to the stem. This question is equivalent to the inquiry about delay times for scattering from the hat of the mushroom into an opening where the stem should be. For fixed angular momentum we find that no more than three different delay times are possible. This induces striking nonperiodic structures in the delay times that may be of importance for mesoscopic devices and should be accessible to microwave experiments., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Abstract

We report results on the performance of a free electron laser operating at a wavelength of 13.7 nm where unprecedented peak and average powers for a coherent EUV radiation source have been measured. In the saturation regime the peak energy approached 170 μJ for individual pulses while the average energy per pulse reached 70 μJ. The pulse duration was in the region of 10 femtoseconds and peak powers of 10 GW were achieved. At a pulse repetition frequency of 700 pulses per second, the average EUV power reached 20 mW. The output beam also contained a significant contribution from odd harmonics of approximately 0.6% and 0.03% for the 3rd (4.6 nm) and the 5th (2.75 nm) harmonics, respectively. At 2.75 nanometers the 5th harmonic of the radiation reaches deep into the water window – a wavelength range that is crucially important for the investigation of biological samples.

This paper will give an overview of the various steps of the commissioning of large vacuum systems for accelerators. Following some introductory remarks, the pump-down, leak check, bake-out as well as component, interlock, and safety checks will be covered in detail. Special emphasis will be given to beam vacuum systems in combination with cryogenic systems. Finally, the transition from the commissioning phase to beam operation will be treated. Practical examples will illustrate most of the topics.

Abstract

This report contains a comprehensive technical description of a new international research infrastructure, the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) Facility. It was written between October 2005 and June 2006 and provides a realistic cost estimate and a compelling assessment of the scientific pay-off. The report has been prepared with the contribution of hundreds of people from many laboratories in Europe and even beyond. Their contributions have been harmonised and merged by many editors, and the whole effort has been coordinated by the European Project Team, generously supported and hosted by the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) laboratory.

TESLA Reports 2001 10 pp. (2001)., After accelerating the electrons and positrons to their full energy in the TESLA linacs, the Beam Delivery System (BDS) transports the beams to the interaction point (IP), where they are brought into collision, and then safely extracted and dumped into high-power beam dumps. The vacuum system is required to maintain an average pressure of 1·10$^{-8}$ mbar (CO/N$_2$ equivalent) in the 1650 m long beam line, while the pressure in the beam lines to the dump should be low enough not to disturb the vacuum in the main beam line. For pumping ion getter pumps will be used. The design of the vacuum system is cost optimized by trading off the size of the pumps against the number required per meter of vacuum chamber. As the magnets typically have small apertures (e.g. 20 mm diameter) the cross-section of the vacuum chamber is increased fom 17 mm to 35 mm inner diameterbetween magnets to save costs.

Abstract

The 18th International Conference on High Energy Accelerators, HEACC2001, Tsukuba, Japan, 26 Mar 2001 - 30 Mar 2001; TESLA Reports 2001 25-27 (2001)., The Tera-eV Energy Superconducting Linear Accelerator (TESLA), a 33 km long superconducting linear electron/positron collider of 500 GeV (upgradeable to 800 GeV) centre of mass energy, presently in the planning phase at DESY, will consist of about 21000 superconducting RF 9-cell cavities of pure Niobium. Each cavity of about 1 m length has to be cooled in a 2.0 K helium bath and operated at 1.3 GHz with 5 Hz beam repetition rate. The cavities, equipped with their individual helium vessels made from titanium, RF input couplers , tuners and magnetic shielding, will be assembled in groups of 12 in about 16 m long cryostats (cryomodules) with thermal radiation shielding at 5-8 K and 40-80 K. Part of the cryomodules will also be equipped with superconducting quadrupoles and steering coils. About 10% of the cryomodules will contain cryogenic valves and instrumentation required for cooling purposes. The paper presents design, construction and assembly details of the cryomodules, which are based on the experience with somewhat shorter cryomodules, already in use at the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) at DESY.

Abstract

Physical review accelerators and beams 3(9), 092001 (2000). doi:10.1103/PhysRevSTAB.3.092001, The conceptional design of the proposed linear electron-positron collider TESLA is based on 9-cell 1.3 GHz superconducting niobium cavities with an accelerating gradient of Eacc >= 25 MV/m at a quality factor Q0 > 5E+9. The design goal for the cavities of the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) linac was set to the more moderate value of Eacc >= 15 MV/m. In a first series of 27 industrially produced TTF cavities the average gradient at Q0 = 5E+9 was measured to be 20.1 +- 6.2 MV/m, excluding a few cavities suffering from serious fabrication or material defects. In the second production of 24 TTF cavities additional quality control measures were introduced, in particular an eddy-current scan to eliminate niobium sheets with foreign material inclusions and stringent prescriptions for carrying out the electron-beam welds. The average gradient of these cavities at Q0 = 5E+9 amounts to 25.0 +- 3.2 MV/m with the exception of one cavity suffering from a weld defect. Hence only a moderate improvement in production and preparation techniques will be needed to meet the ambitious TESLA goal with an adequate safety margin. In this paper we present a detailed description of the design, fabrication and preparation of the TESLA Test Facility cavities and their associated components and report on cavity performance in test cryostats and with electron beam in the TTF linac. Abstract

5 pp. (1999)., During the run 1998/1999 a new injector based on a laser-driven RF gun was brought in operation at the TESLA Test Facility (TTF) linac at DESY, in order to produce the beam structure and quality required either by TeV collider and SASE FEL experiments. High quantum efficiency cesium telluride photocathodes, prepared at Milano and transferred to DESY, have been successfully operated in the RF gun. A bunch charge of 50 nC, only limited by space charge effects, was achieved. The photocathodes have shown an operative lifetime of several months. A new cathode surface finishing has showed a promising decrease of the photocathode dark current. Measurements of dark current, quantum efficiency and lifetime are reported.

Abstract

30 pp. (1994)., This paper describes the progress made in 1992 towards increasing the vertical electron beam polarization at HERA. Utilizing harmonic spin-orbit corrections and beam tuning, the vertical polarization has been increased from 15% to nearly 60% at a beam energy of 26.7 GeV. The long-term reproducibility of the polarization is excellent. Measurements of the build-up time and the energy dependence of the polarization are also described.
