Abstract

We present LimberJack.jl, a fully auto-differentiable code for cosmological analyses of 2 point auto- and cross-correlation measurements from galaxy clustering, CMB lensing and weak lensing data written in Julia. Using Julia's auto-differentiation ecosystem, LimberJack.jl can obtain gradients for its outputs up to an order of magnitude faster than traditional finite difference methods. This makes LimberJack.jl greatly synergistic with gradient-based sampling methods, such as Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, capable of efficiently exploring parameter spaces with hundreds of dimensions. We first prove LimberJack.jl's reliability by reanalysing the DES Y1 3$\times$2-point data. We then showcase its capabilities by using a O(100) parameters Gaussian Process to reconstruct the cosmic growth from a combination of DES Y1 galaxy clustering and weak lensing data, eBOSS QSO's, CMB lensing and redshift-space distortions. Our Gaussian process reconstruction of the growth factor is statistically consistent with the $\Lambda$CDM Planck 2018 prediction at all redshifts. Moreover, we show that the addition of RSD data is extremely beneficial to this type of analysis, reducing the uncertainty in the reconstructed growth factor by $20\%$ on average across redshift. Abstract

We carry out a multi-probe self-consistency test of the flat $\Lambda$CDM model with the aim of exploring potential causes of the reported tensions between high- and low-redshift cosmological observations. We divide the model into two theory regimes determined by the smooth background (geometry) and the evolution of matter density fluctuations (growth), each governed by an independent set of Lambda Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) cosmological parameters. This extended model is constrained by a combination of weak gravitational lensing measurements from the Kilo-Degree Survey, galaxy clustering signatures extracted from Sloan Digital Sky Survey campaigns and the Six-Degree Field Galaxy Survey, and the angular baryon acoustic scale and the primordial scalar fluctuation power spectrum measured in $\textit{Planck}$ cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. We find strong consistency between the geometry and growth parameters, and with the posterior of standard $\Lambda$CDM analysis. Tension in the amplitude of matter density fluctuations as measured by the parameter $S_8$ persists at around 3$\sigma$, with a $1.5\,\%$ constraint of $S_8 = 0.776_{-0.008}^{+0.016}$ for the combined probes. We also observe a less significant preference (at least $2\sigma$) for higher values of the Hubble constant, $H_0 = 70.5^{+0.7}_{-1.5}\,{\rm km\, s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$, as well as for lower values of the total matter density parameter $\Omega_{\rm{m}} = 0.289^{+0.007}_{-0.005}$ compared to the full $\textit{Planck}$ analysis. Including the subset of the CMB information in the probe combination enhances these differences rather than alleviate them, which we link to the discrepancy between low and high multipoles in $\textit{Planck}$ data., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, updated after being accepted for publication to Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract

Context: Gamma-ray bursts are cosmological sources emitting radiation from the gamma-rays to the radio band. Substantial observational efforts have been devoted to the study of gamma-ray bursts during the prompt phase, i.e. the initial burst of high-energy radiation, and during the long-lasting afterglows. In spite of many successes in interpreting these phenomena, there are still several open key questions about the fundamental emission processes, their energetics and the environment. Aim: Independently of specific gamma-ray burst theoretical recipes, spectra in the GeV/TeV range are predicted to be remarkably simple, being satisfactorily modeled with power-laws, and therefore offer a very valuable tool to probe the extragalactic background light distribution. Furthermore, the simple detection of a component at very-high energies, i.e. at $\sim 100$\,GeV, would solve the ambiguity about the importance of various possible emission processes, which provide barely distinguishable scenarios at lower energies. Methods: We used the results of the MAGIC telescope observation of the moderate resdhift ($z\sim0.76$) \object{GRB\,080430} at energies above about 80\,GeV, to evaluate the perspective for late-afterglow observations with ground based GeV/TeV telescopes. Results: We obtained an upper limit of $F_{\rm 95%\,CL} = 5.5 \times 10^{-11}$\,erg\,cm$^{-2}$\,s$^{-1}$ for the very-high energy emission of \object{GRB\,080430}, which cannot set further constraints on the theoretical scenarios proposed for this object also due to the difficulties in modeling the low-energy afterglow. Nonetheless, our observations show that Cherenkov telescopes have already reached the required sensitivity to detect the GeV/TeV emission of GRBs at moderate redshift ($z \lesssim 0.8$), provided the observations are carried out at early times, close to the onset of their afterglow phase., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure. Abstract

The blazar PG 1553+113 is a well known TeV gamma-ray emitter. In this paper, we determine its spectral energy distribution using simultaneous multi-frequency data in order to study its emission processes. An extensive campaign was carried out between March and April 2008, where optical, X-ray, high-energy (HE) gamma-ray, and very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray data were obtained with the KVA, Abastumani, REM, RossiXTE/ASM, AGILE and MAGIC telescopes, respectively. This is the first simultaneous broad-band (i.e., HE+VHE) gamma-ray observation, though AGILE did not detect the source. Abstract

The discovery of very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitting X-ray binaries has triggered an intense effort to better understand the particle acceleration, absorption, and emission mechanisms in compact binary systems, which provide variable conditions along eccentric orbits. Despite this, the nature of some of these systems, and of the accelerated particles producing the VHE emission, is unclear. To answer some of these open questions, we conducted a multiwavelength campaign of the VHE gamma-ray emitting X-ray binary LS I +61 303 including the MAGIC telescope, XMM-Newton, and Swift during 60% of an orbit in 2007 September. We detect a simultaneous outburst at X-ray and VHE bands, with the peak at phase 0.62 and a similar shape at both wavelengths. A linear fit to the simultaneous X-ray/VHE pairs obtained during the outburst yields a correlation coefficient of r=0.97, while a linear fit to all simultaneous pairs provides r=0.81. Since a variable absorption of the VHE emission towards the observer is not expected for the data reported here, the correlation found indicates a simultaneity in the emission processes. Assuming that they are dominated by a single particle population, either hadronic or leptonic, the X-ray/VHE flux ratio favors leptonic models. This fact, together with the detected photon indices, suggests that in LS I +61 303 the X-rays are the result of synchrotron radiation of the same electrons that produce VHE emission as a result of inverse Compton scattering of stellar photons., Comment: To appear in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The Perseus galaxy cluster was observed by the MAGIC Cherenkov telescope for a total effective time of 24.4 hr during 2008 November and December. The resulting upper limits on the gamma-ray emission above 100 GeV are in the range of 4.6 to 7.5 x 10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1} for spectral indices from -1.5 to -2.5, thereby constraining the emission produced by cosmic rays, dark matter annihilations, and the central radio galaxy NGC1275. Results are compatible with cosmological cluster simulations for the cosmic-ray-induced gamma-ray emission, constraining the average cosmic ray-to-thermal pressure to <4% for the cluster core region (<8% for the entire cluster). Using simplified assumptions adopted in earlier work (a power-law spectrum with an index of -2.1, constant cosmic ray-to-thermal pressure for the peripheral cluster regions while accounting for the adiabatic contraction during the cooling flow formation), we would limit the ratio of cosmic ray-to-thermal energy to E_CR/E_th<3%. The upper limit also translates into a level of gamma-ray emission from possible annihilations of the cluster dark matter (the dominant mass component) that is consistent with boost factors of ~10^4 for the typically expected dark matter annihilation-induced emission. Finally, the upper limits obtained for the gamma-ray emission of the central radio galaxy NGC1275 are consistent with the recent detection by the Fermi-LAT satellite. Due to the extremely large Doppler factors required for the jet, a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model is implausible in this case. Abstract

Supernova Remnants (SNRs) are believed to be the acceleration sites of galactic cosmic rays. As such they are expected to produce Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-rays through hadronic and/or electromagnetic scenarios, hence they are natural targets for observations with ground-based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). Currently, VHE emission has been detected from several SNRs, making them one of the most abundant types of established galactic VHE sources. The MAGIC telescope, located in the Canary island of La Palma, has been performing observations of several SNRs over the last two years. Parameters like age, distance, radio flux, or possible EGRET association (i.e., criteria matching those already used for previous successful IACT SNR detections), were used to select candidate targets. Abstract

The long-duration GRB050713a was observed by the MAGIC Telescope, 40 seconds after the burst onset, and followed up for 37 minutes, until twilight. The observation, triggered by a SWIFT alert, covered energies above ~175 GeV. Using standard MAGIC analysis, no evidence for a gamma signal was found. As the redshift of the GRB was not measured directly, the flux upper limit, estimated by MAGIC, is still compatible with the assumption of an unbroken power-law spectrum extending from a few hundred keV to our energy range., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, submitted to ApJ

17. The impact of the Universe's expansion rate on constraints on modified growth of structure

Abstract

In the context of modified gravity, at linear level, the growth of structure in the Universe will be affected by modifications to the Poisson equation and by the background expansion rate of the Universe. It has been shown that these two effects lead to a degeneracy which must be properly accounted for if one is to place reliable constraints on new forces on large scales or, equivalently, modifications to General Relativity. In this paper we show that current constraints are such that assumptions about the background expansion have little impact on constraints on modifications to gravity. We do so by considering the background of a $\Lambda$ Cold Dark Matter ($\Lambda$CDM) universe, a universe with a more general equation of state for the dark energy, and finally, a general, model-independent, expansion rate. We use Gaussian Processes to model modifications to Poisson's equation and, in the case of a general expansion rate, to model the redshift dependent Hubble rate. We identify a degeneracy between modifications to Poisson's equation and the background matter density, $\Omega_M$, which can only be broken by assuming a model-dependent expansion rate. We show that, with current data, the constraints on modifications to the Poisson equation via measurements of the growth rate range between $10-20\%$ depending on the strength of our assumptions on the Universe's expansion rate., Comment: Prepared for submission to PRD. Abstract

La probeta con taladro centrado es un tipo de geometría a partir de la cual las grietas se propagan con frecuencia. En algunos casos, el análisis combinado de carga en modo mixto I y II tiene cierta relevancia industrial. Por este motivo, se ha realizado un análisis numérico bidimensional de una grieta que emana de un taladro en una placa de aleación de aluminio. Se han calculado las áreas plastificadas y los desplazamientos alrededor de la grieta para siete estados de carga biaxial diferentes. Para ello, se ha modificado el ángulo de aplicación de la carga desde 23.4° (modos I+II) hasta 90° (modo I puro) considerando incrementos de 11.1°, y se ha mantenido constante el valor nominal de carga. Con el objetivo de obtener áreas más precisas, se ha utilizado un análisis de elementos finitos basado en el submodelado. Posteriormente, para contrastar los resultados, se han comparado los campos de desplazamiento en la superficie alrededor de la grieta con los resultados obtenidos de forma experimental usando la técnica de correlación de imágenes. Después de la validación del modelo, se ha estudiado la evolución de las zonas plastificadas en condiciones de tensión y deformación plana para diferentes valores de carga nominal. Abstract

We carry out a multi-probe self-consistency test of the flat $��$CDM model with the aim of exploring potential causes of the reported tensions between high- and low-redshift cosmological observations. We divide the model into two theory regimes determined by the smooth background (geometry) and the evolution of matter density fluctuations (growth), each governed by an independent set of Lambda Cold Dark Matter ($��$CDM) cosmological parameters. This extended model is constrained by a combination of weak gravitational lensing measurements from the Kilo-Degree Survey, galaxy clustering signatures extracted from Sloan Digital Sky Survey campaigns and the Six-Degree Field Galaxy Survey, and the angular baryon acoustic scale and the primordial scalar fluctuation power spectrum measured in $\textit{Planck}$ cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. We find strong consistency between the geometry and growth parameters, and with the posterior of standard $��$CDM analysis. Tension in the amplitude of matter density fluctuations as measured by the parameter $S_8$ persists at around 3$��$, with a $1.5\,\%$ constraint of $S_8 = 0.776_{-0.008}^{+0.016}$ for the combined probes. We also observe a less significant preference (at least $2��$) for higher values of the Hubble constant, $H_0 = 70.5^{+0.7}_{-1.5}\,{\rm km\, s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}}$, as well as for lower values of the total matter density parameter $��_{\rm{m}} = 0.289^{+0.007}_{-0.005}$ compared to the full $\textit{Planck}$ analysis. Including the subset of the CMB information in the probe combination enhances these differences rather than alleviate them, which we link to the discrepancy between low and high multipoles in $\textit{Planck}$ data., 25 pages, 14 figures, updated after being accepted for publication to Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract

El presente trabajo estudia la capacidad de predicción de los modelos de plano crítico para casos de fatiga multiaxial. El material que se estudia es un acero inoxidable 316. Los caminos de carga aplicados son uniaxiales y biaxiales en la superficie de la probeta. El siguiente estudio realiza una comparativa de las predicciones de vida a fatiga y ángulo de grieta de los modelo Wang-Brown, Fatemi-Socie, Liu I y Liu II. Se observó que la mejor predicción de vida fue devuelta por el modelo de Liu II y para el ángulo de grieta por Liu I. Universidad de Málaga. Campus de Excelencia Internacional Andalucía Tech. Abstract

En este artículo se presenta una nueva metodología para medir la zona plástica de una grieta en fatiga. Se han adquirido datos de difracción de rayos X sincrotrón para una probeta Compact Tension de acero bainítico, en el plano medio a través del espesor. Estos datos han sido traducidos a campos 2D de deformación en torno al vértice. Se ha generado un campo de deformación angular artificial para, en consonancia con los anteriores, obtener el campo de deformación equivalente de Von Mises. La aplicación de la ley de comportamiento elástico ha permitido hallar campos de tensión equivalente entorno al vértice de grieta. Así, se permite estimar la zona plástica y sus dimensiones. Finalmente se estudia la precisión de la metodología a través de una comparación con los modelos de zona plástica de Irwin y de Dugdale. Universidad de Málaga. Abstract

El concepto de carga de apertura o cierre de grieta es ampliamente utilizado en fatiga para justificar el comportamiento del crecimiento de grietas con distintas relaciones de carga y el efecto de interacción de las cargas. Hasta la fecha son numerosas las técnicas experimentales propuestas para medir la apertura de grieta y entre ellas los métodos de flexibilidad son ampliamente utilizados por su simplicidad. En este trabajo se propone una modificación del método propuesto por la ASTM y se presentan los resultados obtenidos en ensayos de crecimiento de grietas por fatiga bajo cargas aleatorias. Así mismo, los valores experimentales de cargas de apertura son comparados con los calculados analíticamente por un modelo de simulación tipo “strip-yield” implementado en el software NASGRO. En general, se ha encontrado una concordancia razonablemente buena entre los valores experimentales y los obtenidos por simulación. Universidad de Málaga. Abstract

El presente trabajo se centra en el estudio de grietas de fatiga bajo cargas biaxiales. Se presenta una nueva metodología para evaluar el efecto de las sobrecargas basada en la evaluación experimental del factor de intensidad de tensiones efectivo y de la apertura de la grieta (Crack Opening Displacement, COD). El estudio se ha realizado en probetas cilíndricas de acero de bajo contenido en carbono sometidas a cargas de tracción y torsión. Los datos experimentales se han obtenido mediante la técnica de correlación de imágenes digitales. Se ha comparado la evolución de la grieta con y sin sobrecarga. Además, se ha utilizado un procedimiento de detección de carga de apertura. Dicho procedimiento se había desarrollado previamente en fatiga uniaxial para el caso biaxial. En este trabajo modelizamos el proceso interno de decisión sobre los objetivos que prevalecerán en el programa electoral de un partido político. Suponemos que existen dos tendencias dentro del partido, la dirigida a obtener buenos resultados electorales y la sostenida por aquéllos que desean salvaguardar la ideología del partido. Planteamos este conflicto en el marco de la Teoría de Juegos y analizamos las repercusiones que tiene sobre el resultado final el aplicar la solución propuesta por Nash a los juegos de negociación.

Abstract

Dada la dependencia de los módulos de elasticidad en los métodos de estimación de vida a fatiga, se analiza el comportamiento cíclico y la variación de estos con el grado de deformación. En este estudio se llevan a cabo una serie de experimentos de fatiga uniaxial en control de deformación, con R=-1, a bajo número de ciclos y a temperatura ambiente, para caracterizar el comportamiento cíclico del acero al carbono St-52-3N. Se realizaron ensayos de fatiga uniaxial tanto de tracción como de torsión. Se compara los valores de los módulos de elasticidad monotónico y cíclico, además de los valores cíclicos correspondientes a los segmentos de descarga y carga (E1 ,E2) (acordes con ISO/DIS 121106). Se pone de manifiesto la variabilidad cometida al calcular el incremento de deformación plástica según el Método Estándar de ensayo que utilicemos (BS/ISO, ASTM, AECMA) y que determinará en cada caso la estimación del módulo de elasticidad cíclico Universidad de Málaga. Abstract

The MAGIC telescope took data of very high energy ?-ray emission from the blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) between 2004 November and 2005 April. We present a combined analysis of data samples recorded under different observational conditions, down to ?-ray energies of 100 GeV. The flux was found to vary between 0.5 and 2 crab (integrated above 200 GeV), considered a low state when compared to known data. Although the flux varied day by day, no short-term variability was observed, although there is some indication that not all nights show an equally quiescent state. The results at higher energies were found to be consistent with previous observations. A clear correlation is observed between ?-ray and X-ray fluxes, whereas no significant correlation between ?-ray and optical data is seen. The spectral energy distribution between 100 GeV and 3 TeV shows a clear deviation from a power law, more clearly and at lower flux than previous observations at higher energies. The deviation persists after correcting for the effect of attenuation by the extragalactic background light, and most likely is source-inherent. There is a rather clear indication of an inverse Compton peak around 100 GeV. The spectral energy distribution of Mrk 421 can be fitted by a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model, suggesting once again a leptonic origin of the very high energy ?-ray emission from this blazar. ispartof: Astrophysical Journal vol:663 issue:1 pages:125-138 status: published

Abstract

The discovery of very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitting X-ray binaries has triggered an intense effort to better understand the particle acceleration, absorption, and emission mechanisms in compact binary systems, which provide variable conditions along eccentric orbits. Despite this, the nature of some of these systems, and of the accelerated particles producing the VHE emission, is unclear. To answer some of these open questions, we conducted a multiwavelength campaign of the VHE gamma-ray emitting X-ray binary LS I +61 303 including the MAGIC telescope, XMM-Newton, and Swift during 60% of an orbit in 2007 September. We detect a simultaneous outburst at X-ray and VHE bands, with the peak at phase 0.62 and a similar shape at both wavelengths. A linear fit to the simultaneous X-ray/VHE pairs obtained during the outburst yields a correlation coefficient of r=0.97, while a linear fit to all simultaneous pairs provides r=0.81. Since a variable absorption of the VHE emission towards the observer is not expected for the data reported here, the correlation found indicates a simultaneity in the emission processes. Assuming that they are dominated by a single particle population, either hadronic or leptonic, the X-ray/VHE flux ratio favors leptonic models. This fact, together with the detected photon indices, suggests that in LS I +61 303 the X-rays are the result of synchrotron radiation of the same electrons that produce VHE emission as a result of inverse Compton scattering of stellar photons., To appear in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object Markarian~180 (Mrk~180) was observed to have an optical outburst in 2006 March, triggering a Target of Opportunity observation with the MAGIC telescope. The source was observed for 12.4 hr and very high energy $\gamma$-ray emission was detected with a significance of 5.5 $\sigma$. An integral flux above 200 GeV of $(2.3\pm0.7)\times10^{-11} {cm}^{-2} {s}^{-1}$ was measured, corresponding to 11% of the Crab Nebula flux. A rather soft spectrum with a photon index of $-3.3\pm0.7$ has been determined. No significant flux variation was found., Comment: Accepted by ApJ Letters, minor revisions
