Abstract

Recent studies showed that observations of line emission from shocks in YSO jets require a substantial amount of ionization of the pre-shock matter. Photoionization from X-ray emitted close to the central source may be responsible for the initial ionization fraction. The aim of our work is to study the effect of X-ray photoionization, coming from the vicinity of the central star, on the ionization fraction inside the jet that can be advected at large distances. For this purpose we have performed axisymmetric MHD jet launching simulations including photoionization and optically thin losses using PLUTO. For typical X-ray luminosities in classical T-Tauri stars, we see that the photoionization is responsible for ionizing to 10 % -20 % the jet close to the star.

Abstract

Detecting planets within protoplanetary disks around young stars is essential for understanding planet formation and evolution. However, planet detection using the radial velocity method faces challenges due to strong stellar activity in these early stages. We aim to detect long-term periodicities in photometric and spectroscopic time series of the classical T Tauri star (CTTS) CI Tau, and retrieve evidence for inner embedded planets in its disk. The study conducted photometric and spectroscopic analyses using K2 and Las Cumbres Observatory Global Network light curves, and high-resolution spectra from ESPaDOnS and SPIRou. We focus our radial velocity analysis on a wavelength domain less affected by spot activity. To account for spot effects, a quasi-periodic Gaussian process model was applied to K2 light curve, ESPaDOnS, and SPIRou radial velocity data. Additionally, a detailed bisector analysis on cross-correlation functions was carried out to understand the cause of long-term periodicity. We detect coherent periods at $\sim$ 6.6 d, 9 d, $\sim$ 11.5 d, $\sim$ 14.2 d and $\sim$ 25.2 d, the latter is seen consistently across all datasets. Bisector analysis of the cross-correlation functions provides strong hints for combined activity-induced and Doppler reflex signal in the radial velocities at a period of 25.2 d. Our analysis suggests that this periodicity is best explained by the presence of a 3.6$\pm$0.3 M$_{Jup}$, eccentric (e$\sim$0.58) planet at a semi-major axis of 0.17 au. Our study outlines the difficulty of searching for disk-embedded planets in the inner 0.1 au's of young and active systems. 3. Magnetic torques on T Tauri stars: accreting vs. non-accreting systems

Abstract

Classical T Tauri stars (CTTs) magnetically interact with their surrounding disks, a process that is thought to regulate their rotational evolution. In this work, we compute torques acting onto the stellar surface of CTTs arising from different accreting (accretion funnels) and ejecting (stellar winds and magnetospheric ejections) flow components. Furthermore, we compare the magnetic braking due to stellar winds in two different systems: isolated and accreting stars. 2.5D magnetohydrodynamic, time-dependent, axisymmetric simulations are employed. For both systems the stellar wind is thermally driven. In the star-disk-interaction (SDI) simulations the accretion disk is Keplerian, viscous, and resistive. Two series of simulations are presented, one for each system. We find that in classical T Tauri systems the presence of magnetospheric ejections confines the stellar-wind expansion, resulting in an hourglass-shaped geometry of the outflow. In addition, the formation of the accretion columns modifies the amount of open magnetic flux exploited by the stellar wind. These effects have a strong impact on the stellar wind properties and we show that the stellar-wind braking is more efficient in the star-disk-interacting systems than in the isolated ones. We also derive torque scalings, over a wide range of magnetic field strengths, for each flow component in a SDI system that directly applies a torque on the stellar surface. In all the performed SDI simulations the stellar wind extracts less than 2% of the mass accretion rate and the disk is truncated up to 66% of the corotation radius. All the simulations show a net spin-up torque. In order to achieve a stellar-spin equilibrium we need either more massive stellar winds or disks being truncated closer to the corotation radius, which increases the torque efficiency by the magnetospheric ejections., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

This chapter aims at providing the most complete review of both the emerging concepts and the latest observational results regarding the angular momentum evolution of young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. In the time since Protostars & Planets V, there have been major developments in the availability of rotation period measurements at multiple ages and in different star-forming environments that are essential for testing theory. In parallel, substantial theoretical developments have been carried out in the last few years, including the physics of the star-disk interaction, numerical simulations of stellar winds, and the investigation of angular momentum transport processes in stellar interiors. This chapter reviews both the recent observational and theoretical advances that prompted the development of renewed angular momentum evolution models for cool stars and brown dwarfs. Abstract

We present a description of the adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) implementation of the PLUTO code for solving the equations of classical and special relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD and RMHD). The current release exploits, in addition to the static grid version of the code, the distributed infrastructure of the CHOMBO library for multidimensional parallel computations over block-structured, adaptively refined grids. We employ a conservative finite-volume approach where primary flow quantities are discretized at the cell-center in a dimensionally unsplit fashion using the Corner Transport Upwind (CTU) method. Time stepping relies on a characteristic tracing step where piecewise parabolic method (PPM), weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) or slope-limited linear interpolation schemes can be handily adopted. A characteristic decomposition-free version of the scheme is also illustrated. The solenoidal condition of the magnetic field is enforced by augmenting the equations with a generalized Lagrange multiplier (GLM) providing propagation and damping of divergence errors through a mixed hyperbolic/parabolic explicit cleaning step. Among the novel features, we describe an extension of the scheme to include non-ideal dissipative processes such as viscosity, resistivity and anisotropic thermal conduction without operator splitting. Finally, we illustrate an efficient treatment of point-local, potentially stiff source terms over hierarchical nested grids by taking advantage of the adaptivity in time. Several multidimensional benchmarks and applications to problems of astrophysical relevance assess the potentiality of the AMR version of PLUTO in resolving flow features separated by large spatial and temporal disparities., Comment: 34 pages, 34 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

6. Observational limits on the spin-down torque of Accretion Powered Stellar Winds

Abstract

The rotation period of classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) represents a longstanding puzzle. While young low-mass stars show a wide range of rotation periods, many CTTS are slow rotators, spinning at a small fraction of break-up, and their rotation period does not seem to shorten, despite the fact that they are actively accreting and contracting. Matt & Pudritz (2005) proposed that the spin-down torque of a stellar wind powered by a fraction of the accretion energy would be strong enough to balance the spin-up torque due to accretion. Since this model establishes a direct relation between accretion and ejection, the observable stellar parameters (mass, radius, rotation period, magnetic field) and the accretion diagnostics (accretion shock luminosity), can be used to constraint the wind characteristics. In particular, since the accretion energy powers both the stellar wind and the shock emission, we show in this letter how the accretion shock luminosity L_UV can provide upper limits to the spin-down efficiency of the stellar wind. It is found that luminous sources with L_UV > 0.1 L_Sun and typical dipolar field components < 1 kG do not allow spin equilibrium solutions. Lower luminosity stars (L_UV < 0.1 L_Sun) are compatible with a zero-torque condition, but the corresponding stellar winds are still very demanding in terms of mass and energy flux. We therefore conclude that accretion powered stellar winds are unlikely to be the sole mechanism to provide an efficient spin-down torque for accreting classical T Tauri stars., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

7. Accretion funnels onto weakly magnetized young stars

Abstract

Aims : We re-examine the conditions required to steadily deviate an accretion flow from a circumstellar disc into a magnetospheric funnel flow onto a slow rotating young forming star. Methods : New analytical constraints on the formation of accretion funnels flows due to the presence of a dipolar stellar magnetic field disrupting the disc are derived. The Versatile Advection Code is used to confirm these constraints numerically. Axisymmetric MHD simulations are performed, where a stellar dipole field enters the resistive accretion disc, whose structure is self-consistently computed. Results : The analytical criterion derived allows to predict a priori the position of the truncation radius from a non perturbative accretion disc model. Accretion funnels are found to be robust features which occur below the co-rotation radius, where the stellar poloidal magnetic pressure becomes both at equipartition with the disc thermal pressure and is comparable to the disc poloidal ram pressure. We confirm the results of Romanova et al. 2002 and find accretion funnels for stellar dipole fields as low as 140 G in the low accretion rate limit of $10^{-9} M_\odot.yr^{-1}$. With our present numerical setup with no disc magnetic field, we found no evidence of winds, neither disc driven nor X-winds, and the star is only spun up by its interaction with the disc. Conclusions : Weak dipole fields, similar in magnitude to those observed, lead to the development of accretion funnel flows in weakly accreting T Tauri stars. However, the higher accretion observed for most T Tauri stars (${\dot M} \sim 10^{-8} M_\odot.yr^{-1}$) requires either larger stellar field strength and/or different magnetic topologies to allow for magnetospheric accretion., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted in A&A

8. MHD simulations of jet acceleration from Keplerian accretion disks: the effects of disk resistivity

Abstract

Accretion disks and astrophysical jets are used to model many active astrophysical objects, viz., young stars, relativistic stars, and active galactic nuclei. In this paper we present self-consistent time-dependent simulations of supersonic jets launched from magnetized accretion disks, using high resolution numerical techniques. In particular we study the effects of the disk magnetic resistivity, parametrized through an alpha-prescription, in determining the properties of the inflow-outflow system. Moreover we analyze under which conditions steady state solutions of the type proposed in the self similar models of Blandford and Payne can be reached and maintained in a self consistent nonlinear stage. We use the resistive MHD FLASH code with adaptive mesh refinement, allowing us to follow the evolution of the structure for a time scale long enough to reach steady state. A detailed analysis of the initial configuration state is given. We obtain the expected solutions in the axisymmetric (2.5D) limit. Assuming a magnetic field around equipartition with the thermal pressure of the disk, we show how the characteristics of the disk jet system, as the ejection efficiency and the energetics, are affected by the anomalous resistivity acting inside the disk., Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

9. PLUTO: a Numerical Code for Computational Astrophysics

Abstract

We present a new numerical code, PLUTO, for the solution of hypersonic flows in 1, 2 and 3 spatial dimensions and different systems of coordinates. The code provides a multi-physics, multi-algorithm modular environment particularly oriented towards the treatment of astrophysical flows in presence of discontinuities. Different hydrodynamic modules and algorithms may be independently selected to properly describe Newtonian, relativistic, MHD or relativistic MHD fluids. The modular structure exploits a general framework for integrating a system of conservation laws, built on modern Godunov-type shock-capturing schemes. Although a plethora of numerical methods has been successfully developed over the past two decades, the vast majority shares a common discretization recipe, involving three general steps: a piecewise polynomial reconstruction followed by the solution of Riemann problems at zone interfaces and a final evolution stage. We have checked and validated the code against several benchmarks available in literature. 10. Heating groups and clusters of galaxies: the role of AGN jets

Abstract

X-Ray observations of groups and clusters of galaxies show that the Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM) in their cores is hotter than expected from cosmological numerical simulations of cluster formation which include star formation, radiative cooling and SN feedback. We investigate the effect of the injection of supersonic AGN jets into the ICM using axisymmetric hydrodynamical numerical simulations. A simple model for the ICM, describing the radial properties of gas and the gravitational potential in cosmological N-Body+SPH simulations of one cluster and three groups of galaxies at redshift z=0, is obtained and used to set the environment in which the jets are injected. We varied the kinetic power of the jet and the emission-weighted X-Ray temperature of the ICM. The jets transfer their energy to the ICM mainly by the effects of their terminal shocks. A high fraction of the injected energy can be deposited through irreversible processes in the cluster gas, up to 75% in our simulations. We show how one single, powerful jet can reconcile the predicted X-Ray properties of small groups, e.g. the Lx-Tx relation, with observations. 11. X-ray emission from expanding cocoons

Abstract

X-ray observations of extragalactic radiosources show strong evidences of interaction between the radio emitting plasma and the X-ray emitting ambient gas. In this paper we perform a detailed study of this interaction by numerical simulations. We study the propagation of an axisymmetric supersonic jet in an isothermal King atmosphere and we analyze the evolution of the resulting X-ray properties and their dependence on the jet physical parameters. We show the existence of two distinct and observationally different regimes of interaction, with strong and weak shocks. In the first case shells of enhanced X-ray emission are to be expected, while in the second case we expect deficit of X-ray emission coincident with the cocoon. By a comparison between analytical models and the results of our numerical simulations, we discuss the dependence of the transition between these two regimes on the jet parameters and we find that the mean controlling quantity results to be the jet kinetic power. 12. On the origin of X-shaped radio-sources: new insights from the properties of their host galaxies

Abstract

A significant fraction of extended radio sources presents a peculiar X-shaped radio morphology: in addition to the classical double lobed structure, radio emission is also observed along a second axis of symmetry in the form of diffuse wings or tails. We re-examine the origin of these extensions relating the radio morphology to the properties of their host galaxies. The orientation of the wings shows a striking connection with the structure of the host galaxy as they are preferentially aligned with its minor axis. Furthermore, wings are only observed in galaxies of high projected ellipticity. Hydrodynamical simulations of the radio-source evolution show that X-shaped radio-sources naturally form in this geometrical situation: as a jet propagates in a non-spherical gas distribution, the cocoon surrounding the radio-jets expands laterally at a high rate producing wings of radio emission, in a way that is reminiscent of the twin-exhaust model for radio-sources., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in A&A

20. MHD simulations of jets from Keplerian disks: standing recollimation shocks

Abstract

The most successful scenario to explain the origin of astrophysical jets requires the presence of a large-scale magnetic field anchored in a rotating object (black hole or disk) to extract its rotational energy and transfer it to the jet to accelerate it. Besides generating an accelerating force, the interplay of the large-scale magnetic field and the associated electric currents provides a confinement mechanism similar to Z-pinch systems, used for example to confine hot plasma in a tokamak. In order to provide a hoop stress able to compress the jet on such large scales, this Z-pinch requires a non-vanishing asymptotic electric current inside the jet. But linking this asymptotic current to the source remains a long standing pending issue. As a first step towards this goal, we performed a set of 2.5D MHD simulations of non-relativistic jets emitted from keplerian accretion disks, using the PLUTO code. In these platform simulations, the disk is a boundary condition and only the jet acceleration and collimation are self-consistently computed (e.g. Ouyed & Pudritz 1997, Fendt 2006, Ramsey & Clarke 2019). Thanks to a novel numerical method, our simulations have been successfully carried out at unprecedented time and spatial scales, reaching a steady state up to a distance larger than 5000 times the inner disk radius. We found that standing recollimation shocks on the jet axis and body are systematically obtained for a certain set of parameters, as proposed in the Jet Emitting Disk self-similar calculations of Ferreira (1997) and discussed in, e.g, Polko et al. (2013). The influence of the launching parameters on the shocks is studied. Abstract

XIPE, the X-ray Imaging Polarimetry Explorer, is a mission dedicated to X-ray Astronomy. At the time of writing XIPE is in a competitive phase A as fourth medium size mission of ESA (M4). It promises to reopen the polarimetry window in high energy Astrophysics after more than 4 decades thanks to a detector that efficiently exploits the photoelectric effect and to X-ray optics with large effective area. XIPE uniqueness is time-spectrally-spatially- resolved X-ray polarimetry as a breakthrough in high energy astrophysics and fundamental physics. Indeed the payload consists of three Gas Pixel Detectors at the focus of three X-ray optics with a total effective area larger than one XMM mirror but with a low weight. The payload is compatible with the fairing of the Vega launcher. XIPE is designed as an observatory for X-ray astronomers with 75 % of the time dedicated to a Guest Observer competitive program and it is organized as a consortium across Europe with main contributions from Italy, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Poland, Sweden.

Abstract

XIPE, the X-ray Imaging Polarimetry Explorer, is a mission dedicated to X-ray Astronomy. At the time of writing XIPE is in a competitive phase A as fourth medium size mission of ESA (M4). It promises to reopen the polarimetry window in high energy Astrophysics after more than 4 decades thanks to a detector that efficiently exploits the photoelectric effect and to X-ray optics with large effective area. XIPE uniqueness is time-spectrally-spatially-resolved X-ray polarimetry as a breakthrough in high energy astrophysics and fundamental physics. Indeed the payload consists of three Gas Pixel Detectors at the focus of three X-ray optics with a total effective area larger than one XMM mirror but with a low weight. The payload is compatible with the fairing of the Vega launcher. XIPE is designed as an observatory for X-ray astronomers with 75 % of the time dedicated to a Guest Observer competitive program and it is organized as a consortium across Europe with main contributions from Italy, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Poland, Sweden.

Organised by: Cranfield University One of the first tasks designers are facing is the gathering of all potentially interesting information for understanding an initial situation. Its main objective is the drawing of a problem statement and the understanding of all future difficulties their project will face with. In this paper, we consider the problem of highlighting challenges within an inventively oriented design process, based on expert questioning procedures. Our intentions are to obtain a list of clearly formulated contradictions in the sense of TRIZ. 30. Accretion funnels onto weakly magnetized young stars

Abstract

Aims. We re-examine the conditions required to steadily deviate an accretion flow from a circumstellar disc into a magnetospheric funnel flow onto a slow rotating young forming star. Methods. New analytical constraints on the formation of accretion funnels flows due to the presence of a dipolar stellar magnetic field disrupting the disc are derived. The Versatile Advection Code is used to confirm these constraints numerically. Axisymmetric MHD simulations are performed, where a stellar dipole field enters the resistive accretion disc, whose structure is self-consistently computed. Results. The analytical criterion derived allows to predict a priori the position of the truncation radius from a non perturbative accretion disc model. Accretion funnels are found to be robust features which occur below the co-rotation radius, where the stellar poloidal magnetic pressure becomes both at equipartition with the disc thermal pressure and is comparable to the disc poloidal ram pressure. We confirm the results of Romanova et al. (2002, ApJ, 578, 420) and find accretion funnels for stellar dipole fields as low as 140 G in the low accretion rate limit of 10-9 M yr-1. With our present numerical setup with no disc magnetic field, we found no evidence of winds, neither disc driven nor X-winds, and the star is only spun up by its interaction with the disc. Conclusions. Weak dipole fields, similar in magnitude to those observed, lead to the development of accretion funnel flows in weakly accreting T Tauri stars. However, the higher accretion observed for most T Tauri stars ( M ~ 10-8 M yr-1) requires either larger stellar field strength and/or different magnetic topologies to allow for magnetospheric accretion.

Abstract

Large scale magnetic fields are the fundamental key ingredient for both jet collimation and production. However, their presence is still a mystery: are they generated by a dynamo or simply advected? We start by quickly reviewing the physics of jet launching from quasi keplerian (thin) discs. It will be shown that the only available solutions of powerful jets require fields close to (but smaller than) equipartition. All these solutions rely on a crude phenomenological local description of turbulence (alpha prescription). However, despite this caveat, they seem to be consistent with several observational constraints such as mass loss rates and kinematics of jets from young stars. The interplay between turbulent diffusion and advection is then addressed by 2.5 D simulations done with the MHD code PLUTO. It is shown that advection can indeed occur above a threshold on the disc magnetization. Our results shed a new light on the long term evolution of accretion discs by putting more emphasis on the magnetic history of each particular object. This has strong implications on the understanding of hysteresis cycles seeing in X-ray binaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Heating groups and clusters of galaxies: The role of AGN jets

Abstract

X-ray observations of groups and clusters of galaxies show that the Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM) in their cores is hotter than expected from cosmological numerical simulations of cluster formation which include star formation, radiative cooling and SN feedback. We investigate the effect of the injection of supersonic AGN jets into the ICM using axisymmetric hydrodynamical numerical simulations. A simple model for the ICM, describing the radial properties of gas and the gravitational potential in cosmological N-Body+SPH simulations of one cluster and three groups of galaxies at redshift $z=0$, is obtained and used to set the environment in which the jets are injected. We varied the kinetic power of the jet and the emission-weighted X-ray temperature of the ICM. The jets transfer their energy to the ICM mainly by the effects of their terminal shocks. A high fraction of the injected energy can be deposited through irreversible processes in the cluster gas, up to 75% in our simulations. We show how one single, powerful jet can reconcile the predicted X-Ray properties of small groups, e.g. the $L_{\rm X}-T_{\rm X}$relation, with observations. We argue that the interaction between AGN jets and galaxy groups and cluster atmospheres is a viable feedback mechanism.
